We were in town for vacation and this was our last day.So as we were heading out we wanted to get some breakfast before we hit the highway.Everyone told us to come to this place.So we decided to come here.As we pulled up and parked the place had that country vibe to it.Well went in it wasn't that crowded as I expected but it was early. So as I looked around it had that country cabin feel to it with the patio overlooking the frio river.Well went thought about eating outside but the sun was starting to come out and it was getting hot so my wife wanted to eat inside.So we sat down and looked at the menu I was very underwhelmed with the selection.very limited.Also someone told us they had chicken fried steak and eggs which they didn't.They have chicken fried steak but it's just for lunch and dinner.So I decided to get the rooster which is three eggs,bacon,home fries,toast and pancakes.My wife got the simple plate which was two eggs,bacon,toast and home fries.Overall I would say this place is mid.The best part of my plate was the pancakes.Which I thought were pretty good.The home fries were bland and had no flavor to them.Not to mention the bacon wasn't very crispy.I guess that was my fault for not telling them to make it crispy.I just thought this place would be better considering how long this place had been around and everyone telling us to go here.Maybe it's just a place for the locals and they are helping to support them.I will say this their prices are pretty reasonable.But then they make you pay extra if you use your card.So if you can bring cash.All in all the place is just ok but it gets the job done. read more

We spent a recent day at Garner State Park and were looking for a nearby place for lunch. Neal's Dinjng Room was just what we needed. They had limited hours as it was off season here, but they didn't bother us. My husband had the chicken fried steak and I had the chicken fried chicken. Both were plentiful and delicious. The fries were crispy and flavorful. The fried okra was crispy and fresh. And as Texans, we thoroughly appreciated the jumbo sized iced tea (we were even given free to go cups). We're big fans of trying new spots and were genuinely excited to check this place out--especially since it was busy and people seemed to be enjoying their meals. But I'm honestly baffled. Are we all eating the same food here? We started strong with the loaded nachos (sorry, I forgot the actual name, but you'll know them--best thing we had all night). They were genuinely delicious and gave us hope. That hope was short-lived. Then came the entrees-- 1. Daughter's meal: Chicken strips and fries - Totally fine. Nothing groundbreaking, but solid. Kid-approved. 2. My meal: Cheeseburger with cheese fries - I wish I were exaggerating, but the burger looked like it had been boiled. Like, cafeteria-style "somehow both gray and soggy" boiled. I couldn't eat it. 3. Husband's meal: Tom's Chicken Fried Steak Special - Came with a special bonus ingredient: a hair embedded in the batter. They kindly remade it (thank you), but let's be honest, the damage was done. The scalloped potatoes? More like potato chunks swimming in cheesy water. The corn tasted like it'd spent all day in a lukewarm spa bath. Zero flavor. 4. Daughter's meal: the "pepper steak" - I'm using quotes here because what we got was more like a steamed hamburger patty with peppers and cheese inside. The baked potato was somehow both flavorless and confusing. The bacon? I have follow-up questions. Like, what was that? Look, I get it. Some nights the kitchen's off, or maybe short-staffed, or maybe the grill really was broken. But this felt like a prank. And yet--other tables were digging in like they were at a five-star spot. Are we on a hidden camera show? The only highlight (besides the nachos) was our server. She was incredible, kind, and clearly doing her best despite the chaos. I didn't have the heart to walk out on her, so yes--we paid $80 to eat nachos. Wild. Wouldn't return. But I'll remember the nachos fondly. read more

Homestyle cooking, and open on the 4th! The onion rings hit the spot. The the chicken fried steak special, and peppered steak were also good. Although the hours online say Neal's was closed, we were happy to see they were actually open with updated hours. Sat outside looking over the Frio river. We are locals and come in pretty routinely. In the summer we tend to stay home and let the visitors come experience this local legend ( I've been Neal's since I was young- over 35 years). We brought our large extended family in right at 5:45 - it opens at 5:30 and every table was full so we dined outside. I thought it would be hours before we got our food but our table of 12 had all our delicious food in about 15 minutes. It was as my brother in law and his family said - some of the best food in Texas. They raved over the chicken fried steak and chicken nuggets. I'm partial to the chef salad which is packed with veggies and meat and their buttermilk ranch dressing is awesome. My kids rave over the nachos and the Rodger's hot sauce my kids always ask me to pick up a few jars and bring it to Austin when I come to visit. The perfect family restaraunt! This place is so old school and great..So much history here. My dad came her was a kid (and he's almost 80) and took our family here when I was a kid. Now I'm taking my kids. The ambience is great. I think I figured out why this place had so many good reviews. I have a place where I grew up in Colorado where I have so many fond memories as a kid and remembering the food being the highlight of the trip. As an adult I went back and was underwhelmed and confused on why I loved it so much. Nostalgia. I am certain this place is nostalgia for a lot of people. They came here as a kid and it was great and they remember it being great and it just continues on the cycle. I found it to be a cute, quaint, restaurant with a beautiful view of the river. But the food was okay. The pork chops were seasoned well but tough as boot leather. The corn was boiled and not very flavorful. The rolls were just delicious. We had a large party of 17 people that gave Neal's a try this week. There was no wait, we were seated quickly outside. What a beautiful place to dine ! I think we tried some of everything, from fried pickles, jalapeño poppers, bacon cheese fries and onion rings for our appetizers. For dinner, I believe we did the same, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, pepper steak, grilled chicken salad, steak sandwich and children's plates. We literally had the worst waitress we have ever had in our entire lives, and we are old. Lol. I gave Neal's three stars as an average of last year's experience which would have been five stars and this year's experience which would be one. I ordered the shrimp with a baked potato. Waitress brought it sat it down and walked off. No butter, sour cream, tartar sauce...nothing. I had to scream to get her attention. Told her what I needed. She brought most of it back (I gave up on the cocktail sauce) then we had to ask for the same thing for my husband because she only brought it for me!!!! Seriously!!!!! It was almost comical. We came to eat breakfast here after a nice stay at Neil's lodges. It was a great breakfast for a great price. We had the hen and cakes and the pancakes were nice and fluffy and the eggs cooked perfectly with great potatoes and crispy bacon. What more could you ask for? My only regret was not taking pictures of the food + views from the outside seating. My boyfriend and I went camping at Garner and on Sunday morning we just wanted some hot coffee and delicious pancakes. Luckily, we got exactly that here. We were seated fast and got our food even faster. I don't know if we were just really hungry, but MAN the pancakes were phenomenal!!! Better than my mom's (but don't tell my mom that)!! Getting off the truck I looked around and being that it was our first time in Concan and at Neal's it was beautiful. Kinda reminded me of the movie Dirty Dancing small little town with cabins it was nice the outside entrance to the restaurant is nice. Going in we were greeted immediately we asked to sit outside the view was beautiful. So are the hummingbirds they were the cuttest things! Breakfast was exceptional Omg! 3.5 stars if I could. This place is huge. Nice size parking lot. Staff is friendly. You order at the table and pay at the register. Restroom outside which is a new one for me. Now to the food. Fried pickles were piping hot and good, but had a bit excess batter. The pork chop was over cooked and under seasoned. On the menu it said roll came with the plate, but it wasn't there when food came out. Not that I needed it, just a matter of principle. My friends ordered the special of the night which also noted a roll that never came. If you run out, just let the patrons know and at least offer a replacement. The sides that did come out were tasty, however, including corn on the Cobb and green beans with bacon. read more
