if you are looking for some great Middle Eastern treats, Nazareth Sweets is your go to place. For all the restaurants that sell baklava, most of it is made by Nazareth Swwets. All they make are Middle Eastern treats. When you walk in, you are greeted to a display case of all the different suites they have. There is usually one person working because the store is not necessarily a place where many people go to order a few treats but bulk. They are very nice and if you have not tried any of them, they allow you to try some before you purchase. They have been around for decades and have been at this location for the past 10 years. They were previously on kids, just west of Lawrence right by the brown line tracks. It is usually quiet inside only because the lobby is not usually packed with folks due to bulk orders. I was expecting a little bit more cheerful place for having sweets from Jesus' childhood home, yet this establishment appeared to be much more austere than what I envisioned. That's ok though. Thinking that Jesus went through the crucifixion, and perhaps, this store is the reflection of that tragic historical event....well, let's stop digressing. There wasn't no usual displays of sweets in the refrigerators. Instead, items were all boxed up and were categorized by sizes. There was one dude behind the cash register, and another one was making sweets and organizing the trays and trays of goodness. We picked up the medium-sized variety tray ($15 before tax). I really didn't see the prices listed on the boxes, but I know some of them are sold by pound, while some of them are sold by the size of container. The variety tray contains...well, lots of things (sorry, I'm not super intellectual in terms of knowing the name of each kind). Nevertheless, most people's favorites, such as the baklava and pistachio rings, were included. In summary, there were seven (7) different kinds on the medium variety tray. Those sweets are great to go with a cup of strong Turkish coffee (wait and see me yelping at a Turkish coffee place very soon). Dubious, I was. I knew, going in, that Nazareth Sweets was the real deal but I didn't think that it was a real deal I could appreciate. Y'see, I don't do 'sweets' with honey and/or simple syrup. I want SWEET. I want insta-sugar yum yums. Honey is for bees. Phyllo dough? What fo'? Nuts? Crunchy. Not sweet. So...dubious, I was. The initial selections didn't do much to make me reach for my wallet. I discovered that the doughnut hole looking things were crunchy. Blargh. The churro looking thing was wet & squishy. Eeeww. I was a'feared that I wouldn't have anything sweet on which to sup. And that's when I saw it: the western wall glass case. While the southern (and longer) glass case is full of flaky, squishy, nutty, honey baked goods, the west wall is full of chocolate, caramel and...well, those are the only two things that really matter, right? I spied some chewy caramel cup-things, cookies with chocolate, caramel and pecans on top and some sort of chocolate macaroons. I didn't know where to start. Yes I did. I had a cup. And...oohhh.....myyyy....mocha choca latta ya ya...whooo...Middle Eastern Marmalaaaad-uh. I didn't know where I was or what happened. I opened my mouth, bit down and was transported to a land of enlightenment. Forget talks and mediation: drop these caramel cups onto the Gaza Strip and I guarantee peace and harmony will last for ages. One tip, however: in my zest for bringing about peace in the Middle East, I had three of these cups in a row. Don't do this. I thought I was going into a diabetic sugar shock. My left calf & foot started hurting and I got scared. Save yourself from this. Eat one at a time, take a moment to enjoy your elevated state and prepare to pick some up for me. I told the lady working there that I hadn't really had Middle Eastern sweets before and she did not hesitate to throw free samples at me and explain to me what they were. I ended up spending just $7.50 for a box of 14 baklava (pistachio and walnut, almond fingers, bird's nests, rings, and bourma). All of the phyllo dough, honey, and nuts worked together to create the perfect, yes PERFECT, combination of sweet, syrupy, light, flaky, and savory! Half the box is gone already and I suspect I'll be going back to Nazareth Sweets again very soon!! 5 stars all the way bro. read more

They are also VERY reasonably priced compared to Greektown where one piece of baklava is like $1+. I got like 5-6 pieces for only around $3.50! I only dock one star because they didn't honor the Yelp check-in for two pieces of baklava. The woman said I had to buy above a certain amount .... which kind of irked me because I got a small box of baklava but I had to get a medium or a large? When was that rule enforced...? High filo-to-nut ratio and super crunchy. These sweets stay crunchy for DAYS. Makes you wonder how old the overpriced, mushy supermarket stuff really is. I always pick up an extra box for my dad, and it is still excellent even if I can't give it to him till later in the week. On top of it all, everything is dirt cheap. Truth... this review is way overdue! Warbat - I have tried their "warbat" (thats what we call it in Lebanon) at an event and they were fresh and absolutely delicious. There were extras and no one hesitated to take the rest home to share with their loved ones. Baklava - I have tried so many Baklava in the states so many brands, didn't like any thus lost hope and simply stopped buying. I brought back some with me from Lebanon whenever I visited. I recently tried their Baklava and I am happy to say that this the best baklava I tried in the states :D chapeau bas to the pastry chef. Kibbeh - last but not least, they sell home-made Kibbeh that are delicious and filling with a side of cucumber yogurt mix!
