We decided on an overnight trip to Monterey with our 1 year old and stayed here for the night. Easy to find and very welcoming and clean lobby. It was a bit warm that day so it was unfortunate that we couldn't get the AC in the room working but the fans were helpful. Theres a full size fridge in the kitchenette. And our favorite was the continental breakfast where we were able to get milk for our son and even made to go breakfast sandwiches for our day at the aquarium. read more

I happened to book the Monterey Navy Lodge by chance, and although I've stayed at many different places before, I never knew such a wonderful place existed here. Every staff member was extremely kind, and especially Ms. Cherry, whose warm hospitality made this holiday extra special and happy for us. In addition, the housekeeping and building maintenance staff were all incredibly friendly. The room was spotless, well-equipped with everything we needed, and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it felt--just like being at home. As we headed back home after the holiday, we promised ourselves that we would definitely return. I truly recommend this wonderful place to everyone. read more

Pleasantly surprised by Navy Lodge Monterey. Check-in process was smooth, lobby was welcoming, room was spacious and clean, breakfast was more than expected, and location is top notch. My husband and I are originally from the area and come to Monterey a few times a year. We usually stay with family/friends, but decided to book a hotel this time. We've stayed in some awful military accommodations before, so we took a chance on Navy Lodge Monterey and are so glad we did. The standout for us was the breakfast. We tend to stay away from your typical free breakfast food items like waffles, sugary cereal, muffins, things like that, so we were over the moon when we discovered they offered healthier options. Eggs, avocados, unflavored cottage cheese, hummus, fruit, sausage, cheese sticks. We had the free breakfast every morning which really saved us quite a bit of money during our 6 day vacation. There are a couple of cons to mention: the bed isn't very comfortable (I ended up laying some blankets down to provide a little more cushion), the shower/tub combo can use a refresh as the floor was stained and the shower curtain is a little gross. This is a beautiful and clean Navy Lodge in Monterey with very kind and helpful staff. Wonderful little sweets with kitchens, located within easy driving distance to Carmel and Santa Cruz as well. Even though they were dealing with issues with their boiler, which affected getting hot water, their staff worked so hard that they were able to continually restore the hot water each time it went out. The service and the comfort of our stay was so good that the water issue didn't even dampen our spirits. I would definitely stay here again! read more

AWARENESS: Knowing a year ago I'd be in Monterey the first weekend of April 2019. It was no brainer figuring out where to stay; The Navy Lodge Monterey of course. NARRATIVE: When visiting a city where military lodging is available, you can bet that's where I'll be camped out. Especially if it's a Navy Lodge. When it's available in or near a city I'm visiting. Military hotels are known to have cheaper rates. The hotels are normally located on a base with restricted access and for the most part, visitors are normally well behaved. LOCATION: Located a little over a mile from the Navy Post Graduate School and a bit over three miles from Cannery Row. The Navy Lodge is close to all the action. EVIDENCE: During our visit, the office and a section of rooms around the reception desk were under construction. Check in / out and the morning continental breakfast were actually done at a portable trailer. About the size of my homes bathroom. Not a ton of room, this the reason for my three star rating. RECOMMENDATION(S): I plan to return sometime next year, after the construction and new renovations are done. Maybe on my return, I can pump up my rating. Can't beat the convenience. But the walls are very thin and you can hear the next door conversations and snoring. The service carts are noisy and you can hear them coming and going because of the corridor tile grout. The breakfast is more than expected and the have all areas covered. The Navy Lodge located in Monterey California was outstanding. The staff was very helpful and kind, but one stood out as a super star. Eileen was that super star. She was more than a nice person, she went above and beyond. She recommended a wonderful eatery, And Drew myself a map to the establishment. Being a retired inspector for the United States Navy, she would get a 4.0 evaluation, across-the-board. She personifies, customer satisfaction skills, team building and a smile that lit up the day. strange idea of customer service, very dismissive reception offering NO assistance in an arrangement where I was placed at the lodge due to a broken water pipe. ACTIVE DUTY AND RETIRED MILITARY ONLY: This was my first stay at the Navy Lodge in Monterey and it's a nice clean place to stay at a very reasonable price. $76.00 a night, which is easlily half of what I would have paid to stay in town. I've stayed at a couple of the "Best Westerns" in town and each time for a weekend rate I shelled out $200 per night. That being said, we were not staying at the Hyatt that was located just down the avenue, so no frills or fancy hotel garb here. it's simply a very clean, well lit, and safe place to stay at an affordable rate. "NO" 12% hotel tax added to the overall bill due to U.S. Navy property, just $152.00 for Friday and Saturday night stay. A similar room in town would have been around $440.00 with taxes. I'll always go with less frills and a smaller bill any day of the week while staying here in Monterey. Oh yeah, what also makes this place shine over many others is that you can bring your dog (pet) with you while you stay here and this place "IS" close to town. My husband and I stayed at the Navy Lodge for almost a month while waiting for our military housing to become available during a PCS (the hotel is for military only). For the price and our needs, you can't ask for anything better. I'm leaving a very detailed review, as there is not much info available on the Navy Lodge website, and I would have liked to have known some of these things in preparation for our long stay. ROOM DETAILS & PRICING: - $77 a night. - FREE WIFI. The reviews stating otherwise are outdated. I wouldn't call the wifi fast, and it booted me off constantly, but it was there, and it was free. - The main part of our room had a queen bed, large closet, couch and coffee table, desk with two chairs, bureau with a flat-screen TV on top, small dresser with mirror, and a cafe table with two chairs situated by the window. - Cordoned off bathroom section contained a large counter with one sink and large mirror. Small bathroom located behind door (door had a full-length mirror on it). - Cordoned off kitchen section contained a small coffee maker, mini fridge, microwave, two-burner stove, and small sink. Cabinets were stocked with everything completely essential to cook and eat a simple meal. Because we were staying for so long, it was important that we were able to cook some of our own meals, and this was possible (if a bit uncomfortable). PROS: - Pets accepted. We have a 50-pound dog, and he was comfortable in the room and on the hotel campus with us. *They need you call to book a room if you have a pet (rather than booking online).* They don't mention this anywhere on the website. - Room size. We were even able to fit a skinny Christmas tree in the room! - Location. Convenient to both DLI and NPS, and only a five-minute or so drive to downtown Monterey where there is a Trader Joe's, a post office, and many restaurants. - The neighborhood. The Navy Lodge campus is located in the La Mesa military housing community. It's a very family- and pet-friendly neighborhood, great for walks and runs (lots of hills, and pretty views), and for walking the dog. There are a lot of playgrounds, and people were friendly. - The service. Every front-desk employee I spoke with was extremely polite and helpful. Including the one who we checked in with around 1:00am. Probably the best staff of any hotel I've been to. Mark deserves a shout out; we left a few items in the room after our checkout, and he helped us coordinate to have the items retrieved and held for us. And he also arranged to hold some mail that was delivered for us after our checkout. - If you are staying during a PCS, go to the Shopette or PX at NPS and pick up a scratch-off card. Give the card to a desk employee at the end of your stay, and you could get 10%, 25%, or 100% off up to 20 days of your bill. - They prioritize PCSing customers. We had to extend our stay twice, and they accommodated us easily both times, without switching our room. CONS: - Our sink leaked into the cabinets to the side of it, so the pots/pans/bowls in there were constantly wet. - One of the sprinklers on our ceiling was also leaky. - Temperature control for the room was broken, and it was often very warm and humid inside. - Water pressure in shower was very poor, though this is common at hotels. - It was often quite noisy as a result of a centrally located playground packed with kids. However, it's great that this playground is offered and used, so not a true "con." - Pots and pans provided in kitchen are not nonstick. This made them difficult to clean, especially since no cleaning supplies were included in the room. Cleaning the kitchen is the responsibility of the guest, so we had to go out and buy sponges, scouring pads, etc. - It was apparent that the kitchen area had not been cleaned (probably as it had not been used) in quite some time. There was scum and mold on the dish-drying rack when we got there. - The designated dog poop area is in the middle of the parking lot, so I had to walk the dog through traffic areas to get there. And, this is not the hotel's fault, but it was apparent that guests with dogs did not always use the designated area, or clean up after their pets. read more

Got to stay here for a couple days to attend a wedding in Carmel at a winery nearby last month. The room was nice it had to queen beds, bathroom, sitting area and a small kitchenette. It didn't have AC but if you keep the window open there is a nice breeze that comes in with the use of the ceiling fan it was pretty cool. I heard it is pet friendly too. There is a commissary nearby too but no swimming pool. There is a fire pit area and little park within the complex. I also learned that it is mainly used my military families so it is not an option for the public but it was a nice way to stay on budget while out there in Monterey. read more

This hidden gem is 15min from the aquarium. And 5 min drive to town. Ours had a little kitchenette (stove top, fridge, sink, coffee, toaster ,pots etc.) I requested 2 Queens. Bathroom stocked with mini toiletries and a variety of sizes of clean towels. Outside on the property there is a play structure for the kids to play. In the a.m. from 6-9am there is bagels, juice and granola bars at the front desk. The best part was that it was $75 a night! I am not in military but did purchase this through a group wedding booking. Not sure if you need to be in the military, be married or have some tie to be able to stay there. Call the 800# and see! I'll be on the lookout for more navy lodges when needing a place to stay. read more

We tend to stay at military lodges due to price only. We were pleasantly surprised when we got to this lodge, not just because of the room, but because of where it was located. Very nice area, off base, but in housing. When we checked in the guy told us there was a little store behind the Lodge that was open until (I heard 9 pm, my husband heard 10 pm) well it closed at 8 pm and we were upset by that. We got two Queen size beds in our room, and it had a kitchenette type area and everything. We left a great comment card. Would stay again definitely. read more

We stayed here during the summer PCS rush in and out of monterey. The prices are GREAT for the area, and quality is much better than at the Presidio of Monterey. They also accept pets ($100 fee) which was key during our move - although these rooms are limited (but are close to designated pet bathroom areas). You also have to pay for the internet (I think it was $22) The rooms are nice (not great), and the kitchenettes are a big money saver if you're here for a few days. It's located in the LaMesa housing area so you can check out the Military Housing, and its just over a mile to NPS, and about 2 miles to downtown. If you don't have pets, the NPS BOQs (Herrman Hall) are even better (and cheaper). read more

Clean, and has all the basics for us to live during our PCS. They also allow our Labrador, AND we can leave her in the room (in a crate). Every other place we looked at in Monterey that accepted her size, wouldn't allow an animal to be left in the room, which makes house hunting incredibly difficult. Only bummer was "breakfast". We were told breakfast was available, so we didn't add breakfast items to our grocery trip, only to show up to "breakfast" of hard boiled eggs, apples, and coffee. I thank you for the morning snack, but that's not a breakfast. I don't mind that breakfast isn't offered, but you should probably change the wording when letting people know at check-in, what's available. read more

Stayed at the Navy Lodge after my sister's wedding in Santa Cruz, and I didn't want to drive all the way back to L.A. Fortunately, I'm a Navy brat, so I was able to check in at the Navy Lodge. Clean room, two queen beds, microwave and fridge in the room for $77? Great deal for Monterey. I slept with the window open and could hear the sea lions barking from the wharf. The best part was getting up in the morning and walking around the neighborhood where I grew up - I lived in La Mesa Village for a couple of years and I went to La Mesa School for Kindergarten and 1st grade. My old house was on the land where the Navy Lodge sits, so who says you can't go home? Free breakfast "to go" starting at 0600 (that's 6 AM for y'all): can of orange juice, bagel, and granola bar. And all the coffee you can drink. read more

Nice place. Rooms are large and well equipped with a large conferrable bed, fold-out couch, small kitchen, cable TV, and hair drier. Internet access was NOT free and not that good, but it worked. My guess is to many families were Skyping and streaming NetFlix, but such is life ;-) Location is fine. x5 Washer/Driers in hotel, coin operated. Breakfast is only a breakfast bar and a bagel you cook in your own room, but hey, it's free! Want more, there's a small Shoppette a block away. After visiting a few motels near the Del Monte Shopping Center, lodging at the Presidio of Monterey (POM), and here, this Navy lodge is the best place in the area. We paid $55/night for the most basic room. I stayed during the peak season, too! PROS: -Best quality for the price. -Great amenities for the most basic room. In our room, we had a Keurig coffee pot, a nice-size fridge and freezer, and a microwave -Very fast internet! I think some of the reviews below are outdated because we did not have to pay extra for wi-fi. Every motel I have stayed at in Monterey has slow internet, especially the POM lodging -Beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. The exterior is so lovely! And the rooms are built to be sturdy -Thick walls. It's always uncomfortable when you're in a hotel with thin walls. Again, the construction of this hotel is high-quality. -Clean, comfortable, and updated furniture -Fast, friendly service. The shower was clogged. It took less than a couple of hours for maintenance to arrive and fix it. Front desk is nice and helpful, as well. CONS: -Not exactly walking distance from the pier and downtown. This wasn't a big issue for me because I had my car. This might be an issue for people flying in to the area. -You have to have a servicemember sponsor you. I could not book or pay for a room myself. After finding the hotel at NPS booked up for the weekend, I was advised to try finding a room at this lodge. I had no idea that this place existed and that it was located at La Mesa Village. The hotel itself is in a nice and very convenient location. It is a three minute walk from the hotel to the mini-mart (which is open everyday). The hallways to the rooms are partially open to the outside. The room, although not very large, comes with a comfortable couch and kitchenette. The bathroom sink are is located separate from the bathroom. The WiFi has both free and paid options. I tried the paid option for one day. The only difference I noticed was that it didn't disconnect every 2-3 hours like the free option. Also, your cell phone data reception will be pretty poor in this area. Although as nice as the hotel in NPS, the pricing is still pretty fair and comes with many amenities that would satisfy any military stopping through Monterey. read more

If you have a military ID, and are planning a trip at least a couple weeks in advance, there is nowhere else you should be staying. Rooms run at around $75 a night for what is basically a well-decorated studio apartment that has all the amenities you'd need if you were staying even for a couple of weeks. You can stock up the fridge full of food and make yourself a few dinners, and there's a separate couch and a nice bathroom. Plus, the areas are well decorated. The only real downside (and minus one star) is that there have been times when I've had to wait almost a half hour to check in on a Friday night, showing that they are sometimes very understaffed. When I have several bags on me I don't want to stand in the lobby waiting to check in--but other than that, I always have a wonderful experience here. The "continental" breakfast is really just some bagels and an orange juice, but unless breakfasts are a huge deal-breaker for you, you'll really enjoy your stay here. read more

I wish I could have so many nice things to say about this navy lodge as the other customers. We had a really unpleasant experience with their poor customer service. We stayed there two nights with My 19 months old during a PCS move. We got a one bed room so my daughter slept in the pack and play we brought with us. Due to the change of environment, my daughter refused to take bath at night at all. And her bed time is 7pm, so she made us all went to bed at 7pm and spent VERY limited time in the bathroom. (30 mins in total for two nights in the bathroom.) After checking out, I saw a $200 charge on top of the hotel charge. I called the lodge and they told me because we damaged the tower bar (apparently someone pulled the bar and cracked the tile), there was no way we did that. I wanted to ask more information, the front desk Jennifer told me to talk to the manager. However, I couldn't get a hold of the manager for two weeks. I called daily, left voice mail nobody ever contacted me back. At a point, the front desk would just put me on hold and disconnect me without giving me any info. Finally the manager called me back yesterday and she was not trying to help resolve issue but simply telling me yes, we are charging you $200 because you were the last people stayed in that room, they also said that they have photos of the damage. I couldn't figure out with the limited time we stayed in the bathroom (and the hotel room, we left early in the am and went back just to sleep at night), how could we possibly damage anything without knowing it? Especially if it's the bar somebody had to intentionally pull it to damage. I don't think my 19 months old had the ability to do this type of damage. My husband and myself for sure didn't do it. Because they are unwilling to resolve the issue for us, we had to call our bank to start the dispute (first time ever we had to set a dispute case with any merchants.). We are super disappointed considering this DOD facility and that's how they treat their service member! Just for your information, if you ever stay there, make sure you check the room throughly, just in case there is some existing damage you didn't notice then they will charge you for that when you check out. Not sure if we will get the money back, but definitely a lesson learned. We have stayed in so many hotels, apartments, military housing due to my husband's assignments, we have never damaged anything in any of those places, not mention to be charged by the things we didn't damage. read more

Awesome location and WAY cheaper than staying on the economy while exploring Monterey. The Navy Lodge is about 10-15 min from Fisherman's Wharf, Aquarium, and Lover's Point. It was about a 35 min drive to Bixby Bridge down near Big Sur. The rooms are very clean and spacious. Pet friendly, you just have to pay a fee based on the number of days you stay. I believe it's $65 total for 2-4 nights. They have breakfast daily from 0600-0900 but it only consists of coffee, hard boiled eggs, bagels, cereal, and breakfast bars but it satisfied me just fine. I highly recommend staying here if you plan on visiting Monterey. read more

Ok, where to begin.... First off, we arrive and the staff tells us they are working on the hot water. There was no hot water at the time but they were working on it. This was at approximately 1pm. They did not let us check in until 3p. When we got back at 3p, the hot water still wasn't working. I went into the hotel to relax and watch tv. The remote didn't work with the tv at all. We informed front desk and they sent maintenance over. The maintenance guy said it was the wrong remote and brought us a different one that worked immediately. How does that happen? Apparently the staff is switching things between rooms. That's concerning since they should be focusing on one room at a time. Now it's apparent things are being switched between rooms. Next, the thermostat was not adjustable. The room was a little cold but I had to handle that with blankets. We called front desk again at 7, still no hot water. Went to dinner, called again at 10, still no hot water. Waited to shower and at 11, we called again to be told that there will be no hot water all night. We literally had to shower by heating water on the stove top to bathe. It was miserable. I thought maybe the business would give us a discount to try to make things right upon our checkout.... Nope. No discount. Not even a lousy apology. I will never return and I will be telling everyone I know who is thinking of booking here not to. I would not be so frustrated if we would have received a discount and apology. They should do the right thing for their customers but they didn't. I get it that things happen but at least make things right with your customers. Also lastly, although it was the least of my worries after the water... The Wi-Fi was no good. It was a very weak connection and you have to keep logging in over and over. read more

Very nice hotel. Definitely cheap for what it should be worth. It is nestled in the La Mesa community so it is very safe and quiet. A NEX is just a couple of minutes by walk. There is free wi-fi and a slightly faster version of Internet if you want to fork over some cash. Unfortunately no LAN though. My only complaint is that I can't walk to the vending machines in my PJs since once you leave you're room you are technically outside. But that's nothing they can change. read more

We've stayed here in the past and it was adequate. This stay was extremely disappointing. The place is undergoing renovations & it took a while to figure out where to check in; a trailer. The employees do not communicate thoroughly & were not helpful when we had problems. The coffee in the office was seldom ready for customers. The thermostat in our room didn't work. The bathroom floor was dirty, as was the upholstered chair in our room. Instead of a fire extinguisher behind the glass on our floor, there was a vase of fake flowers. The tile floor outside of the rooms accentuated the clackity-clack of rolling luggage, & the thin walls between rooms meant having to hear the couple next door having sex. The ice machine down the hall was out of order with a beeping alarm that continued all day & into the night. The woman at the front desk told us the repair people had been contacted & there was nothing she could do about it. She wasn't apologetic, & didn't seem to care that their customers would be unable to sleep. From now on, we'll stay at the Navy Gateway Lodge when visiting Monterey, instead of this lodge. read more
