I have visited this place a couple times in the last two months. The first time was for an almond…read moremilk latte with one pump of syrup. While I did greatly appreciate that they use ceramic mugs instead of paper if you choose, I was disappointed in how it almost cost $10 for a nondairy latte. The second time I went I ordered a chai latte and found out they use the mix instead of making it from chai tea. Disappointing from a place that demands premium pricing. I ordered a chai tea instead and the water was so hot I had to order ice. I was with a little kid who also got a chai and disappointed they didn't offer that to him and instead gave me what I consider scalding hot water in a cup with a tea bag. Staff was friendly. I went to Unlikely Story in Plainville and got a chai latte made from real tea with almond milk under $6 last week. So again the prices at this Bakery are premium. I am willing to pay for premium if that is what I am getting and while the first time I got a latte it was tasty but I still am disappointed at the price point. The second time I went I sat at the bar in front of the espresso machine and was grossed out at how dusty the top of the machine is... because they have their to-stay mugs upside down on top of it. There was a layer of dust and there were dust bunnies hanging off it in my direction. There was a bit of dried splattered milk on it too. Basically, they need to clean that and it was not the type of dust that was just there for a week. Got a scone that I wasn't sure was either day old or overcooked either way I needed a sip of tea to get it down and I did not finish it because it just wasn't that great. Pretty sure the scone was over $5. While I want so badly to support a small business like theirs I don't think I will be back until I know they clean the machine more frequently.

Said nothing walked away came back with the whipped cream and a cherry. She handed it to me with a rude look on her face and said nothing. The whipped cream was the least amount she could put on without it being so blatantly obvious she was nasty. I threw the cherry out. I will never come back to this place again.

The phone number list 877 984-2824 gets you to The Hatch Group which has nothing to do with the ice cream shop. I'm guessing that was the previous owner. Why they don't remove their phone number from the ice cream store is a mystery. I'm guessing an oversight. I've been on a mission this summer to sample chocolate frappes at as many places as I can. The reason I rate the frappe here 10/10 is good price, thick chocolatey flavor, & served with a large diameter straw. No way you're inhaling this using the usual size straw. I…read morehad ordered from here before and wasn't quite as impressed, but dining in definitely changed my opinion. The Gavel redeemed itself on this visit. The food came out fresher, the drinks were good, and the overall experience was much better sitting down in the dining room than ordering takeout. The service was excellent. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and easygoing, and our server did a great job checking in without being overbearing. That always makes a difference, especially on a weeknight when you just want a relaxed dinner that goes smoothly. The food itself was solid, with plenty of good options on the menu, and the drinks were well done. It's a comfortable local spot for dinner, drinks, or meeting up with friends. That said, they still really need a bigger place. The current space works, but it feels like The Gavel has outgrown it a bit. With the kind of following they seem to have, a larger dining room would make the experience even better. Overall, this was a much better experience than I expected based on takeout, and I'm glad I gave it another shot. The Gavel has definitely redeemed itself for me, and I'd go back -- especially for dining in.
