I came here as part of the RI FOOD FLIGHTS #bestscoopshopri event. Another super hot day meant ice cream was needed, so I went to this RI icon. They've been churning out ice cream (pun intended) for almost 50 years. Today was my first time going inside the shop. In past times, I had ordered at the window. The inside is small but packs in a lot! Candy and other treats line the walls, a beautiful display of fudge and hand dipped chocolate goodies right in front of you. The young ladies at the counter were very nice, and accommodated my request for their favorite. For this shop, I was told the cookie butter flavor was everyone's current #1. I also got some apple flavored crocodile gummies and I was on my way. The cookie butter surprised me. I expected it to be very sweet, but instead the ice cream had some lovely deep caramel notes from the cookie butter and the big chunks of speculoos cookies were soft and easy to eat without being overwhelmed by sugar. What a great little ice cream place! Tons of flavors to try, including some unique and seasonal options. Everything I've tasted so far has been great. Most recently, I tried their pumpkin ice cream and it did not disappoint! You can get ice cream one of several ways. The ones I remember off the top of my head can be bought either as a packed pint, in cups, several varieties of cones, sundaes, banana splits, cookie sandwiches, and floats. Lots of toppings and sauces to choose from as well. Staff is friendly and service is pretty quick. It does get quite busy here at times, and the parking lot is tiny, which means you might have to go across the street to park. While that's not a big deal for most people, being handicapped, it's a big downside for me, especially since you'd need to cross a very high-traffic street. This is why I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5. They do have an inside area where you can order as well, but you cannot sit/dine inside. There are a few picnic tables outside that you can use, but they also fill up quickly. Inside, you can also buy things like ice cream cakes, fudge, candy and other treats. It's a little bit of a trek for me, but I will definitely be swinging by anytime. I am in the area. Definitely worth checking out! read more

I participated in the Rhode Island Food Fights 9th Annual Ice Cream Event and this was my sixteenth stop. I went late at night expecting a smaller crowd, but there were still a lot of people to the point that their parking lot was full and I had to park across the street. Their order windows and some tables are sheltered so rain or shine, this place seems like a reliable spot to go for ice cream. They also do have more tables scattered around the property. They have a very good list of hard ice cream, including specials like cereal milk and golden oreos. I also appreciated how they had a sign with the different name of the cones since I always mix up sugar with wafer and sugar with waffle. I sampled the cereal milk and it tasted exactly how I thought it would, but ultimately, I liked cinnamon oat cookie and raspberry cheesecake a little more. This casual ice cream spot has the creamiest, smoothest, and most delicious sweet treat offerings at really affordable prices too! Essentially, there are about four windows with servers taking orders and scooping out treats. After selecting a line, deciding on flavors and the quantity of scoops, you pay, and quickly receive your order. I got a seasonal ice cream flavor of peach in a kiddie for a little over $5 and my partner got black raspberry Oreo ice cream in a small for a little over $6. We were so happy with our choices! Hands down one of my all-time favorite ice cream spots! I've come here a few times with my coworkers, and The Ice Cream Machine never disappoints. The menu variety is incredible--they have endless flavor choices and tons of ways to order, whether you want cones, cups, frappes, or specialty sundaes. My absolute favorite is a small sundae with the Cookie Monster flavor. You get a huge portion for a great price--seriously, the sundae in my photo loaded with whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry was just a small! I ordered and got my order in just a few minutes! There's 3 lanes open so the line moves fast. There's plenty of seating on site, but if it happens to be packed, it's super convenient to just walk right across the street to the park. There's a reason why The Ice Cream Machine has been around for a long time and there's almost always a line. It's because they make darn good ice cream!! I'm pretty fussy about my ice cream and there are definitely lots of great options around and I'd put them right up at the top in RI. If you go here often enough you'll have some great batches with lots of fillings and flavors and some OK batches with a little less, but it's always good. Rich and creamy without any artificial feeling. Lines can be long and sometimes they go slower than others. I'm not usually in a big hurry when I'm going for ice cream so it doesn't bother me. I also don't find it any slower than other favorites in the area like Lincoln creamery, Wright scoop, west end creamery....etc. Last time we visited we had black raspberry Oreo and strawberry cheesecake and they were both great. It was a cooler night with a few drops so it was pretty quiet and we were in and out quickly. read more

After a nice hot, race day, I was so excited to hear another race mention an ice cream shop near by! I was hoping to get something basic like strawberry ice cream, but as I walked in, saw some shortcake and knew I wanted that instantly. Kinda cool that you can pick two flavors for the Strawberry Shortcake and a cherry on top. So good, I devoured it instantly. The lime rickey tasted too watered down, so nothing of note there. They do have windows outside to order like other ice cream places, but I guess they weren't opened until a later time? Instead, you can walk into the shop and order from there. There's actually alot going on inside, cake, candy and obviously ice cream! If the race happens again, this will definitely be part of the routine. read more

First trip to Ice Cream Machine in close to 20 years and still great! Multiple lines and plenty of staff. The flavor selection is almost endless and they still have great lime and raspberry Rickey's. A great local, homemade ice cream spot! The parking area is small but people are coming and going regularly so it's not too bad to navigate. While there is often a line inside, you can also go inside to order. I appreciated that a small cone was still able to have 2 flavors. The ice cream quality and flavor was really top notch. The Ice Cream Machine was a stop for the 6th Annual Search for the Best Scoop Shop RI with RI Food Fights. There is a huge parking lot and plenty of places to sit to enjoy the ice cream. There are picnic tables near the parking lot and an outside patio with string lights. Next to the stand where you order ice cream, there is a store to purchase ice cream cake, fudge, and candy. There are many ice cream flavor options and even seasonal ones. I had their pumpkin oreo. It was very good and creamy. It was very pumpkiny. Service was wonderful. Delicious creamy homemade ice cream spot with awesome flavors. I'm a sucker for birthday cake ice cream so that was my first flavor I tried and it was so so good! Instantly can tell it was high quality homemade ice cream and didn't melt all over the place. They don't offer soft serve ice cream but they have a large variety of hard ice cream along with sherbet, sorbet, yogurt, and sugar free options along with sundaes, drinks, ice cream cakes, and a small candy fudge shop connected to it! 10/10 would recommend and can't wait to go back to try different flavors! read more

Yes, I do. It's a small family own business that luckily for us were ice cream fanatics is opened all year round so we'll miss a day of not having it is located right across from the new remodeled diamond Hill State Park. All the people are very friendly and kind and a lot of times it's young people and it's hard to find young people actually care about their job. They have multiple flavors all the time. They're totally rotating the flavors of the month as well as a seasonal flavors so you don't get bored having to get the same one all the time. I think they probably have closer probably 50 flavors at one time. read more

I almost feel biased writing this review because the Ice Cream Machine just feels like my whole childhood in one scoop. But maybe that's the point. I've been to so many ice cream shops & still need to make it a point to stop here whenever I'm home. They have so many flavors and very rarely disappoint. This time I had a scoop of s'mores & pumpkin oreo for the perfect taste of fall. Always great service by the revolving door of high schoolers (just glad I'm too old to see anyone I know anymore). Also, most people don't know this, but you can also order ice cream inside where they sell candy. Many outdoor picnic tables are available. This could be a personal experience / opinion, but thought this should be mentioned. My sister and I stopped here on the way back from Boston and came out of the way due to the raving reviews. Unfortunately we were both really disappointed by the ice cream - I had the blueberry pie (recently trying this in Maine and loving it) but it was literally vanilla ice cream with frozen blueberries. They were still frozen when I bit into them and had that freezer burned taste. My sister got the coffee heath bar and didn't find a single heath bar piece in her scoop. We were both just sad after coming out of our way to try this place & felt the ice cream quality didn't match our expectations. Neither of us even finished them. I'm sure other flavors are good.. maybe just ask to try them lol. read more

Some of the best ice cream I've had! The texture is impossibly light/fluffy and rich at the same time. The lines were already long when I came here in early spring, and I can only imagine they must get much longer during the summer. It's worth the wait though! You can get 2 flavors in a small cone which is always the mark of a great ice cream shop. Good luck choosing from the dozens of flavors! I think ice cream machine is a fine place to get Icecream if there is no line. Going out and getting homemade is always better than something you get at the grocery store, but overall I'm not a huge ice cream machine fan. I find when I order something with toppings in it (coffee heath , cookie dough) there's almost nothing inside. My cookie dough had maybe 4 pieces of dough in a medium, and almost no heath. Very reliant on the base. It's more expensive than other local places. I appreciate that they're open year round so you can get something in the winter, but other than that reason, I'd go elsewhere in town. read more

Super confusing lines- pretty much a free for all so that started the aggravation for me.... Waffle cone was not good-hard and not fresh. Got sea salt caramel and grapenut frozen yogurts. The grapenut was flavorless. Lots of caramel in the sea salt but the yogurt had no flavor. Had to park across the street at the rec center because the parking lot was a nightmare. Canned whipped cream-watery. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but I won't go again to find out. read more

Even though this ice cream shop is on the opposite side of Rhode Island to us, this shoppe is definitely worth the drive. Ice Cream Machine is open all year long, and store closings are only dependent on weather. This shoppe has the longest list of homemade flavors I have ever seen. There is also a long list of sundaes, toppings, and other creations you can enjoy. You are able to try multiple flavors and every flavor can be explained. The sundaes are always tempting, but we always choose the ice cream alone. The ice cream is delicious without any additions. No matter the flavor, the ice cream is always thick and creamy. Our go to is the small, which is two large scoops that can be two different flavors. My favorite combination is Ginger ice cream and Birthday Cake ice cream. We usually go early in the day to avoid the crowd. One visit we came later at night and the lines were all over the place. The scoopers would instruct people of the lines to the windows (marked on the ground). There is also a school nearby and was overran by teenagers that Saturday night. I would advise to come early as possible like we usually do. Overall, we love the ice cream and always look forward to coming back. read more

Friendly service, clean, excellent ice cream, lots of flavor choices, and nice decor. A small size cup of ice cream is what I'd call a medium and is very filling. Looks like a popular place as there was a line out the door during diner time, late November! Nice that they had outside seating with a partial clear plastic screen around it (but not totally encompassing and no heater). The inside is rather small fir the crowd they get do partly due to the line expanding out side. Note there is no indoor seating. Next time traveling between RI and MA again, I'll be back! read more
