Service was attentive and provided solid advice for drink and appetizer selection. It's a fun spot and it actually has water views as you take an elevator up (unlike being street level at the Wharf). The bar has happy hour deals (more reasonable prices). Booth, high top, bar, big table seating options. It wasn't too crowded or loud when we went. Special feature: the Toto toilets in the bathroom with all the buttons

I came here on a Wednesday to have happy hour with a friend. It was relatively empty, which I didn't mind because i was serviced very quickly, and it was relatively quiet. The ambiance is wonderful and you come in on the first floor to a wonderful decoration into the lobby area. You go up to the elevator and get a relatively nice view. The food was wonderful, especially for happy hour and I would definitely come to this place again my friend and I shared the hummus and sushi.

Came for a surprise bday brunch for a friend. And upon arrival we were sat at the bar area when were thought we would b sat at the window for a view. However we didn't take issue with that. It did take a while for the server to take orders and get drinks and food rolling but once he did, it was non stop. The brunch is served family style for the number of ppl on your party. We prettt much wanted to try everything so we did. You order 3 times at a time. EVERYTHING WAS GOOD... except those octopus balls. They were mushy and o couldn't even swallow it. lol but other than the those... everything was amazing. My only critique would be for the French toast, pancakes and waffles to offer syrup. The waffles were a little dry and hard. The best things were steak and eggs, chicken dumplings and the Brussel sprouts. The French toast is an honorary mention lol.

My experience at Nara Ya left much to be desired. While I understand restaurants have grace periods, I think its unreasonable that a member of our party showed up within the time period and were not only told she could not be seated, but that our table would be moved. I could understand if the restaurant was packed, but it was barely 50% full. Service was overall slow and we had several different waitstaff come to our table, which was confusing. One of the waiters did give us a round of tasty shots, which was appreciated, did not make up for the experience. I also enjoyed my "Shoguns and unicorns" drink as it was refreshing. The food was overall just okay and definitely not worth the price. The calamari was tender, but the breading was not crispy enough. The fried cauliflower was tasty and my green dragon roll was fine, but again not worth the price especially given they are both vegetarian dishes. It is overall a nice restaurant with a vibrant decor, but I will likely not return.

Nara-Ya is aesthetic and very picturesque, even more-so in the evening due to it having the best view of the Wharf. Between 4 people our total bill came out to be right around $300, which covered 2 appetizers (pictured), 6 rolls (I ordered the Tempura Crunch and Smoke Break), and 3 alcoholic beverages. The rolls were fairly mediocre in my opinion, and each priced about $20, though the Smoke Break was my favorite of the two I ordered. 20% gratuity is automatically added as well as a 3.5% charge if you're using credit card for payment. Do I feel the experience was worth the price, absolutely not. We were a few minutes late (a person from our party was on time but they refused to seat her) for our reservation and they didn't let us sit at our assigned table (though no one else occupied it the rest of the nice as we were there until closing) so we had to sit at the high tops. Mind you, we called them maybe 10 times on our way there to let them know we were running behind and everytime (no matter what button we pressed on their pre-recorded system) and we were unable to reach someone. Our waiter didn't arrive until after we sat for maybe 30 minutes and he often disappeared--at one point another waiter came over to take our food orders because he was nowhere to be found-- and honestly there was nothing worthwhile about the experience. I would be interested to try their brunch as it is very popular, and seems to have better quality food and service than dinner time.

We came here for happy hour. First impressions, loved the wall paper decor. Very unique and inviting. Also loved the bathroom amenities - heated toilets lol Happy hour menu for cocktails was limited however the bartender's special which was vanilla infused cocktails was good. The spicy salmon crispy rice was quite a large portion. Overall it was a good experience.

My friends and family dined with me here on 10/11 for my birthday brunch. It was everyone's first time so there was a lot of chaos but it was the most delightful and savory experience ever. I had the pleasure of speaking and working with Bilson to get this reservation squared away. He was so patient and kind. Very efficient. And our server, David, was so pleasant despite the confusion. He deserved every penny of his tip! I cant say what I liked best because everything was immaculate! From the staff upon entry, to the decor, to the food and service! I found this place on TikTok and besides the all you can eat option, I was immediately drawn to the steak and eggs. And it did not disappoint!! There were so many options to share and we had not one complaint. I believe we tried almost everything. I can't wait to come back.

Bottomless food for $55 great deal. The only thing is it's a shared experience not your own plate. So table has to agree to select on the menu item. Best thing was the roasted potatoes and matcha pancakes 10's across the board. The steak and eggs 8/10 the steak was highly seasoned perfectly just wasn't cooked long enough to my liking. The Sakura sunrise mocktail was amazing. The French toast was also great not too eggy and honestly good and fluffy. The chicken and waffles 3/10 waffles were burnt and chicken was ok. But the chicken Benedict was great took off the egg and it was good cooked perfectly. Crispy Brussels sprouts-2/10 they weren't crispy it was like they were boiled. Service was good individuals were cleaning consistently and checking in. Just didn't keep my friends bottomless drinks filled. Place is cute tables could be a lil bigger. Requested a serving spoon and bigger plates which they delivered

Well, well my God! This place is it! Now, we all know how pricey this area of DC is (well all of DC a pricey, right?) But I am willing to spend big bucks here because this sushi was so good! This is my first time actually sitting and eating at a restaurant at the Warf because I'm usually here just to get some fresh seafood then head home. But I'm so glad I finally made the effort to stop and see what they have available. This was my 2nd restaurant of the night that I tried and if I would have came here first it would have been the only one. The first restaurant was good but for what I paid for it was not it. And I will say I would never go back to that restaurant again. My review on that will come later. But back to this fresh sushi and excellent experience and service. To get to the restaurant you have to go to an elevator and go up a few floors after you walk through the instagram phot ready maze to get to the elevator. Very cute indeed. After eating the elevator you head to the concierge who will show you around the restaurant if it's your first time and find you a place to sit . Because I was by myself I opted for the bar area that has small tables and booth. I'm so glad I opted to try new things instead of going to my regular sushi and was pleasantly surprised when the waiter's recommendations were all on point with the tuna roll, salmon, yellowtail, up to the (2) drinks I tried. I wish I remembered the name of the rolls as drinks but I can't. So if you don't know what to try ask! Now this might come to be a surprise for most but the bathroom toilet has to be mentioned. Besides the bathroom being ultra modern the toilet was it! Had a seat warmer and even a remote for you to use the other options if needed. Now I ain't going lie I wanted to try the other options to see...but decided I'll do that one next time I'm here...lol Run don't walk to Nara-Ya it's that place!

A5 WAGYU $30 CRAB | SWEET TRUFFLE SOY ROASTED SWEET PURPLE POTATO

The chef's selection of sashimi is a really good value for $79 and the Wagyu roll was delicious. The chutoro, eel, and white tuna sashimi really stood out to me. The restaurant wasn't very busy for a Friday night but service and food were both excellent. The restaurant is clean, staff are friendly, and the women's room has a Japanese toilet, which is worth a visit itself.

We dined at Nara-Ya for happy hour this past weekend. Important to note: do note make a reservation for HH in advance. Apparently, it is only available at the bar--a detail not mentioned when making a reservation, despite what the host may claim. I would have rated Nara-Ya 4 stars for its interior design, location, views, and the prices relative to the quality of the food. The sushi was good given the price ($10 for rolls). Sadly, they offer only two gluten-free options: salmon avocado and a vegetarian avocado roll. Despite the owner's claim on their Yelp profile--"We are very happy to have many gluten-free items, or items that can be made gluten-free"--this was not the case. Unlike other high end restaurants that take food restrictions and allergies seriously, the server rudely informed me more than once that NO modifications could be made to the HH menu, even for a gluten allergy. On several occasions, the server had to go to the back to confirm that I was receiving the GF dish. This was disappointing, as I was concerned I might accidentally consume gluten! I had been looking forward to trying other types of sushi, like their tuna rolls, but once again, I was not given the option. One final note: make sure to opt for bottled water. We initially drank tap water, which had small mildew particles floating around. We immediately informed our server and opted for bottled water instead. Overall, due to the lack of GF options and the moldy water, it was a one-time visit for me.

I took my sister out for her birthday and we went to NaRa-Ya. Needless to say she had a great experience. They have a really awesome staff. Our host, Jose, did a great job serving us and made it a memorable event for my sister. The food was great. I loved the tempura crunch. The view is beautiful but the floor was a bit slippery.

Courtney L.

The four of us had an exceptional dinner here as our last meal in Washington DC! We booked reservations for 5:00P on a Friday evening and were seated promptly after a kind welcome from the host. I was impressed by the classy and lavish atmosphere of the dining room, and we enjoyed a view of The Wharf from above. For being considered a more upscale restaurant, the pricing of the sushi was actually pretty reasonable with all the "Specialty Rolls" being $20 or less. All the sushi tasted super fresh and clean. + NARA-YA roll ($18): Spicy salmon, asparagus, sweet miso seared salmon, avocado, crispy quinoa & shiso. This was a simple classic roll and I appreciated how the salmon truly stood out as the star. + SALMON SIZZLER roll ($20): Shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, garlic habanero seared salmon, habanero garlic oil, spicy mayo, eel sauce & crispy onions. So many flavors and textures melded into this roll. However, considering the elements of habanero that this supposedly had, I actually didn't detect much heat, if at all. + TUNA TRUFFLE roll ($20): White fish, serrano pepper, avocado, Negi, Yellowfin Tuna, sweet truffle soy & scallion. My favorite one! The serrano pepper added a nice crunch and a perfect amount of spice. + ELECTRIC EEL roll ($20): Shrimp tempura, cream cheese, cucumber, eel, avocado, furikake & eel sauce. The eel on top was actually pretty meaty compared to eel rolls I've had elsewhere! I was also pleased with the subtlety of the cream cheese. + THAI RED CURRY SPIDER roll ($19): Tempura soft shell crab, carrot, cucumber, spring lettuce, avocado, eel sauce & cilantro. The pieces of this roll fell apart easily since they're so large, so it was somewhat challenging to eat. With the abundance of veggies, this was a lighter roll, but I found the red curry sauce very overpowering. + CALAMARI ($16): Probably one of best plates of calamari I've had! The light breading was perfectly crispy and lightly salted. Dipping it in the wasabi aioli is a must as it added so much oomph. For dessert, I had the MATCHAMISU ($18), which was okay, but the amount of cream was overwhelming and it didn't have a strong matcha flavor overall. My family liked the YUZU CHEESECAKE ($20), finding it nice and tart. I considered both very pricey considering the serving sizes. At the time we made a reservation, we indicated that we'd be celebrating my dad's birthday, and the staff really made our experience special! Not only did the host wish him a happy birthday when we entered and exited, but our waiter provided us with a complimentary cheesecake bar dessert. The manager even came over to our table to thank us for choosing Nara-Ya for this special occasion. The staff's kind gestures made our dinner very memorable. Thank you!

Miso Glazed Salmon. Absolutely delightful. Rich & complex flavors.

Our favorites were the tuna truffle and sante fe rolls. The edamame hummus was okay but they didn't provide enough rice crackers to fully enjoy it. All the drinks were great. I appreciate that they offer nonalcoholic cocktail options. If it was more affordable I'd come here more but like others have noted the high prices, credit card fees, taxes, and tip really add onto the final bill making it a place that's maybe a few times a year place but not a regular spot. read more

We came to the wharf to enjoy a date night. Decided we would try Nara-ya. When we arrived at the outside hostess stand we were told that the restaurant had already called last call 20 minutes prior. The restaurant did not close until 10pm and we arrived at 8:20pm. We were very disappointed. The hostess attempted to reach the manager and she never got a response. We ended up at their sister restaurant. When we arrived there we stated that we were trying to go elsewhere but we were told they were close. The hostess and another manager tried to get in touch with a manager and that took 15 minutes. I'm not sure as to why a restaurant would close 2 hours before they actually closed. I understand an establishment not being busy but that is a little ridiculous. Definitely moved to the bottom of my list to try. read more

We came for the bottomless mimosa brunch and had a great time. Atmosphere is top notch, although the tables for two looked pretty tight. The service was pretty reliable, although we did have to ask for a refill a handful of times. There is only one mimosa mixing option (orange juice), but they accommodated our request for a glass of something else for additional flavor. The food highlights are the lemon dumplings and chicken and waffles. I'd skip the potato hash and egg dishes but most items were at least a 7/10. Overall really enjoyable experience. Total bill (including automatic gratuity) was about $130. read more

Went here with two friends to check out the very instagrammable restaurant located on the Wharf. First and foremost, this place is gorgeous. From the moment you walk in, and the staff is very aware. They encourage you to take photos upon entering and exiting the establishment (genius!) We were sat with a view that faces the water and it is a very amazing view might I add, with tons of natural lighting. While that's the good part of my review, the not so favorable part of my review is the service and the food. The host was very friendly, but our server did not introduce himself to us, and just all around was not very attentive. The food is also nothing to rave about. The price point is very high for the food to be so poor in quality and taste. The only food item that I would go back for is the short rib. It was very flavorful but it was literally smaller than the palm of my hand. I also had the prawn, electric eel roll, and the district spice roll. I don't recommend any of the three mentioned. The drinks are very cute and were decent in taste. I had the Rhythm of the River and the Why Is It Floor 3.1 (my favorite of the two). If I ever return to this establishment, it would solely be for the ambiance and drinks. read more

Well, this is a nice place in the hip Wharf area. Great setting looking out over the river. This place is all about atmosphere. It is the quintessential date place. Techy dance music playing just a wee bit too loud. The food is geared towards folks that are not looking for authentic Asian or sushi. Most of the rolls have something fried in them, and slathered in sauces. There is no option to order ala carte sashimi or nigiri. So if your looking to impress that hot date, this is a go-to. If your looking for real-deal Japanese dining, look elsewhere. read more

As soon as you walk into the "lobby" are to take the elevator, there was a horrible smell. Once you get upstairs the check in desk area is extremely small, and just uncomfortable. The food was mediocre. I had their brunch. I wouldn't give anything past a 5/10. I asked for spicy Mayo and never got it. They only had orange juice for the mimosas. Nara-Ya has been on my list of places to try for so long but i just hadn't made it there until recently. It was prettyyy much everything I expected! Beautiful decor, amazing food, & strong drinks. The lobster fried rice actually comes with two medium sized lobster tails on top instead of having to guess if you really got what you paid for. The tuna truffle roll was just WOW if you like truffle & tuna lol. & the why is it called floor 3.1 drink is a great refreshing tequila drink. 4 stars because it is a littleee loud & you do sit pretty close to the next table if you're at a 2 seater but it's still overall very comfortable & a great experience! read more

Hmmm. Come here for the photo opp but I wouldn't say the sushi. I really wanted to like this place since I had heard so much about it but it was just so disappointing. I mean the staff was great but I came here looking for amazing sushi and it wasn't that. For the price you're paying per roll you expect top notch and it wasn't. I really don't like downing a place but the food was just okay. I would say cute date night or girls night spot where you wanna take cute pics and play dress up. read more

you know when you eat white bread and it sticks to the roof of your mouth? that's how sticky the rice in the sushi rolls was!! it was super overcooked and almost gelatinous. great service. great playlist. fun ambience. fyi - 20% gratuity is added to all checks. drinks okay - could've been stronger. the only thing only the menu that i would come back for is the grilled edamame with yuzu sesame dressing. absolutely delicious! however, i wouldn't recommend this place for to anyone unfortunately. read more

We had a great time at Nara-Ya for my birthday dinner. Frankly I think other reviews were way too critical of the food. The fish was some of the freshest I've had in DC, presentation was beautiful, drinks were delicious, and the view was stunning. You're eating a nice dinner at the Wharf, of course the sushi isn't cheap, but I also didn't think it was not overpriced for what we were getting. I will say, we had a 7pm reservation on a Friday, and trying to get parking at the Wharf was impossible. We were an hour late for our reservation, but Nara-Ya was super accommodating. We got the Why Is It Floor 3.1 and Old-Fashioned from the East for drinks. Both were delicious. The habanero tincture adds a great kick to the drink, but if you drink from a side of the glass without the habanero it really just tastes like a tequila + pineapple. To start we got the crispy cauliflower and smoked zuke tuna. The crispy cauliflower is not to be missed! Phenomenal and very filling! The frying on the cauliflower is so light and crispy. The smoked tuna had a very cool presentation. The smokiness was nice for the tuna and the fish was fresh, but the smokiness didn't work as well on the accoutrements (apple slices and carrots). For entrees we got the Nara-Ya, District Spice, Tempura Crunch Roll, and It's Business Time. All were fantastic and, again, the fish was super fresh. Our favorite was the District Spice, definitely a crowd pleaser. The Nara-Ya was delicious but had an ocean-water flavor that isn't for everyone. My boyfriend is a big eater but the two starters and 4 entrees were filling enough for the two of us. We'd definitely come again / bring out-of-town guests for a nice dinner! read more

Nara-Ya has a beautiful and unique bar and great staff with some delicious sushi, but there were some misses that caused me to leave them only three stars. Their hostess told us they were fully booked until 10PM and that the bar could be a 30-40 min wait but when we took the elevator upstairs there was bar seating open and some tables at the bar. Our bartender/waiter was super friendly and helpful. Our drinks were a little sweet in my opinion and didn't wow me. I got the tuna truffle roll which was great but nothing better than I've had elsewhere. My big issue was with the wagyu roll.. for $33 it was extremely basic. The wagyu might as well not be in there because it was paper thin and I didn't taste it. There were barely any crunchies on top. I mostly just tasted the king crab which was great, but the roll was overpowered by a slightly undercooked chunk of purple sweet potato in the roll. I was expecting Catch-level sushi from this spot but was ultimately a bit disappointed. read more

He walked me through the options and ordering was a breeze. The price point is a little higher than your average all you can eat dining experience, but well worth it. I must've had 15 pieces of nigiri. Having worked in a sushi restaurant I can tell you it was phenomenally well done. Beautifully fresh and buttery and the sushi rice was perfect. The eel kamameshi was a highlight and came with a showing amount of eel. Finished everything off with the matcha tiramisu and a cup of green tea. I won't need to eat for days. Will definitely be coming back! Thank you Kay and team!

If I'm honest, whenever I…read moreshow up to an AYCE I'm always skeptical with the quality of the food, especially when it comes to sushi but wow, I was blown away how great it was for AYCE. The set- up and the ambiance is very comfortable and sleek/modern with the main sushi chefs in the middle and the tables around them. The tables have waiters and a tablet at the table like most hot pot/kbbq places and you can order everything off of there. I have only been here once and wanted to try to low tier without going "all in" on the top tier option of diamond without knowing how the basics would taste. Let me say if the bottom tier was as good as it was, I'm excited to come back to try the next tier! Anyway, the basic tier already comes with a lot of sushi options and should be enough for those who are craving just sushi. All of the cuts of nigiri was great, all tender with great flavor, but what stood out to me the most was actually the yellowtail, super buttery and great flavor. The eel was also a top choice! All the rolls were good basic to the fancier ones, I would say that most of the bang for the buck would be the nigiri. The rolls are good but a little too much rice for me personally. The appetizers, didn't spend too much time on them but the chicken karaage was solid and the seaweed salad was my two favorite. Overall, super solid for the price and I'd totally want to go again to try more of their options! 100% recommend!

Once I got inside, it was a long L-shaped counter and just a couple of tables along the outer perimeter of the wall. Our server checked on us efficiently, and I definitely have a few highlights from what we tried. Fried oysters: simply delish! I didn't want anything fried, but I was talking to this and didn't regret it haha. Eggplant: if you don't like the texture, don't get this. But the ginger and other flavors going on really make it hit. BBQ eel & cucumber: my favorite dish! It was both refreshing and flavorful, and we enjoyed it so much we got to. The omakase dish had a fun colorful variety of fish on it, and while it was good overall, some fish just tasted so plain compared to others. I would come back here, mainly for the dishes I highlighted and for the daily options that become available. It might take quite a while to get through everything!

We ordered family style and tried a fair bit of the menu. I enjoyed the food enough but wasn't blown away by any of it. It was very expensive with tiny portions, but the flavor and quality wasn't any better than much cheaper restaurants. The croquettes were $18 for just two, but it didn't have as much crab as comparable croquettes I've had for less, and it felt under-seasoned. The standout was the garlic rice, funnily enough, and the eel tamago dish for me. I enjoyed the kakuni and the pork belly in the soba noodles, but it wasn't particularly well-prepared and the serving style was awkward for a group (3 big pieces with no way to cut or portion - they said they had no knives). The other savory dishes were just okay, and really none of them were something I would order again at this price point. The cod in particular disappointed me by being so bland. I did love the ice cream we ordered at the end, although each of us ordered a separate flavor and they confused us a bit by combining them at random in 2 bowls for 5 people. Honestly, I think my views are being colored slightly by the service, which was poor across the board. I would have been more generous with my rating if I felt the service was good or friendly, but to have cold service and high prices and tiny portions and unimpressive flavors made me feel less inclined to return. Still, it wasn't bad food, just mediocre - I wouldn't go back but I wouldn't warn anyone away, if that makes sense. Looking at the other reviews now, it seems we weren't the only ones to receive poor service, so it wasn't just an off night. The prices are one thing, but when you compare the service to an izakaya in Japan it's a pretty stark difference, right?

The menu spans a wide variety of Japanese cuisine (or at least, how one might traditionally imagine it), and there were some genuine highlights: the steak (it wasn't billed as wagyu, so I'm not entirely sure what it was), the eggplant taco, and the corn. That said, as someone who's particular about Japanese food, I do feel that restaurants specializing in each of these dishes execute them better -- Uchi's sushi and Izakaya Seki's yakitori both outshine Shoto's versions. The room itself is glamorous in a very Miami way: sleek decor, a showy bathroom, and it takes on a bit of a nightclub vibe as the night goes on. Definitely an 8/10 and something I'd recommend trying. I also ordered the grilled octopus with potatoes, and that was delicious as well. My only wish is that the portions were a little bigger, but honestly, the excellent service and the fact that we shared several dishes made up for it. My mom ordered the Suzuki yaki, branzino, which was delicious, and the corn was SO good. It's covered in butter and absolutely worth trying! We ended the night with the matcha tiramisu, and they even wrote "Happy Birthday" on the plate for my mom. Such a cute touch and a perfect way to end the meal. They said online that we might leave hungry, but we were actually pretty full! I definitely think sharing several dishes is the way to go. If you're only ordering one entrée for yourself, you may leave wanting more, but with a few dishes to share, we had plenty. Overall, I'd definitely recommend Shōtō. It's definitely a bit pricey but the service really stood out, the food was delicious, and it felt like a special place to celebrate. I'm already looking forward to coming back to try the sushi!

3.5 stars - Great ambiance, but food is hit or miss Nara Ya has a unique atmosphere that makes it perfect for a first date. The ambient lighting sets a cozy, intimate vibe, and there are seats with a beautiful view of the harbor. The retro decor is a nice twist on the typical Japanese restaurant, giving it a distinctive feel. I personally enjoyed the food, but my boyfriend wasn't as impressed. He thought the sushi was overpriced for what it was--just "mid" quality in his opinion. I have to agree, the prices didn't quite match the experience. That said, the dessert was definitely a highlight, and I'd recommend saving room for that! Overall, it's a great spot if you're looking for a nice atmosphere and a decent meal, but don't expect anything extraordinary when it comes to the sushi. read more

NaRa-Ya is such a great find! The place has a cozy, vibrant vibe, and from the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with friendly smiles and the amazing smell of spices. Their dishes, like the creamy tom yum and crispy tempura rolls, are so delicious. It's a great spot for a date or a casual night out with friends, and their mango sticky rice is the perfect way to end the meal--I'm already thinking about my next visit! Nara-Ya delivers a top-tier dining experience with its exceptional atmosphere and attentive staff. The team is skilled at guiding guests through their expansive menu, ensuring you make the most of your visit. The cocktails are impressive and perfectly complement the well-crafted dishes. While the prices are on the higher side, the quality of both food and service justifies the expense. For a refined and enjoyable meal, Nara Ya is definitely worth the splurge. read more

Went for dinner & enjoyed everything about the place! It is super cozy & romantic! We ordered the crispy cauliflower & edamame hummus to start, both delicious! We had tons of sushi, my favorite was the lobster dynamite roll! It melts in your mouth! Cocktails were great, highly recommend the 3.1 cocktail. Service was fantastic! Definitely will be coming back soon to try more food! read more

A Birthday to Remember! From the moment we arrived to the final surprise, this birthday celebration was nothing short of amazing. The service was top-notch, with our server going above and beyond to make sure we felt special. To top it off, they surprised me with sparklers, a cake, and even shots--such a thoughtful touch! I couldn't have asked for a better experience. read more

My wife and I visited this restaurant for our anniversary and spent $500. Unfortunately, the service was extremely poor, and the food was horrible. It was almost as if I was eating rice and oil. The ambiance was also not great. While it's cool to be on the rooftop with a view of the wharf, that doesn't justify the high price tag. I wouldn't recommend eating here. read more

What an Instagram worthy place. The sushi was delicious and the ambiance was wonderful. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is our male waiter was sort of rude and not personable. He also charged us for something we did not order. Other than that, it was a great restaurant. The view is spectacular over looking the wharf. read more

Looking for a great dinner spot to celebrate, we were both craving sushi. We started with miso soup, edamame, and warm hand towels before the meal, which was a wonderful touch. For main dishes, we ordered the sushi platter, tasting platter, and shrimp tempura. Everything was delicious--the sushi was so soft it practically melted in your mouth. Because it gets crowded quickly, we made reservations both nights we ate here. Megan was kind enough to let me taste a few cocktail mixes before deciding. I ended up choosing the cucumber-forward Kintsugi Sbagliato--bubbly, refreshing, and not overly sweet, made with umeshu, Suze, cucumber, and sparkling wine. I just wish they could give it a name that's a little easier to pronounce and remember! Devante, the bartender, did a fantastic job with his recommendations, especially the salmon crudo aka Salmon Aji Amarillo. It was flavorful, fresh, and beautifully balanced. I also tried the eggplant and crispy tofu, my two vegetarian choices, and both were delicate and delicious. I even enjoyed the dessert, which was interesting and surprisingly on the healthier, lighter side. The food isn't cheap considering the portion sizes, but I think the creativity, quality, and thoughtful execution make it well worth it. What really elevated the evening, though, was the exceptional service. I felt genuinely welcomed and very well taken care of from beginning to end. Overall, this was one of those dining experiences where the atmosphere, creative food and drinks, and genuinely warm service all came together beautifully. Nothing felt conventional or predictable, and that was exactly what made it memorable. I left genuinely impressed--and very glad I found this place.

When you get seated, you're given a small menu that has pre-selected sets and à la carte options. Their drinks menu is relatively extensive, and there are some food options that aren't handrolls. I ordered the 5 handroll set and will say the highlight is the Acevichado. It's flavorful and was my favorite amongst the five I ate. The others (crab, spicy tuna, hamachi, scallop) were straightforward, but the quality and flavor were still good. The price is reasonable, all things considered, and you leave feeling full. I also enjoyed the matcha lemonade, but I wouldn't say the main draw here is the drinks. I'd definitely come back and recommend Maru San to others!

I landed at DCA and got here when the restaurant opened. There was no line! I even tried to utilize the virtual waiting list - thought I was getting tricked - but there really was no line! Maybe cause it was the day of the world cup final and no one was interested in hand rolls? I think I got lucky. I ordered the set of 3, and ended up adding 3 more - guess I was hungry. My favorite was the acevichado, and least favorite was probably the langosta. I would also skip the passionfruit lemonade since there was nothing special about it. The handrolls have a peruvian twist to it, and I really enjoyed the twist. Its quite dark in there so was hard to take pictures, but great for a first / intimate date setting. My handroll maker wasn't very helpful but the host was around to ask questions. I would come back to the experience!

As I looked over the menu, I mentioned that I was there to try the famous garlic fried rice that everyone has been raving about on TikTok. She laughed and agreed that it was good, but she also assured me that their sushi was fresh and delicious. Naturally, I had to try both! The sushi was amazing and definitely lived up to the bartender's recommendation. It was fresh and delicious! I also appreciated how she continued to check on me throughout my visit to make sure I was good. We even had some great conversation, which made the experience that much better. About 10 minutes later, my garlic fried rice arrived, and I loved how perfectly timed it was. I ordered it with a poached egg, and while it was good, I think I'll try it without the egg next time. The flavors in the rice were absolutely delicious! I even saved the leftovers for lunch the next day, and it was still just as good. I ordered the happy hour portion, and the serving size was still pretty generous. Their happy hour menu is definitely worth checking out!
