Happened to be in Sac for the weekend and on our way out I was looking for something light for lunch. Found this place on Yelp and since I haven't had sushi in a bit, this was the perfect pick. Pulled up and parked (which was pretty easy), the lot is small-ish maybe 20 spots or so. But today wasn't busy at all. We got in and sat at the bar. The AC was on blast which was lovely because outside was 100 degrees. There was 2 other tables, so it wasn't busy at all. It was happy hour which gave us $5 drafts and $2 Kumamoto oysters (6 piece minimum). The dry aged fish was on the specials board as well. Ordered: 6 oysters, dry aged tuna and dry aged salmon nigiri, Rainbow roll and Shima Aji Sashimi. Got the dry aged pieces first. Passed the smell test, no fishy smell at all. Bites were clean and tender. The salmon even had a bit of smokiness on it. Would definitely order again. Oysters and rainbow roll were also really good, solid all around. Asked the chef for a recommendation and he advised to try the Shima Aji (another board special). This go around we got this as sashimi. Another fresh and clean fish. Mild flavor with slight sweetness. We ordered pretty much everything through the chefs behind the bar and the service was solid. Needless to say this is a place I would come back to. read more

Salmon and yellowtail were both fresh and properly sliced, no sloppy thick cuts like some places. Creative rolls without going overboard on gimmicks, you can tell someone actually cares about what goes in them. The place is nicely decorated and the service is okay. They would've made more money if they would've just asked if we wanted more drinks or fill our water more often. The booth they say us at was still kind of dirty, good thing it was more towards the window. The fish cuts were fresh. The oysters were really good though and I enjoyed the salad. The Paris Sashimi platter was decent, some of the cuts were just okay, again if we could've gotten more sake I think it would've made it better. Overall, I would not go back for this price point. However with that being said, I would like to try sitting at the bar counter and eating there. That's kind of been the thing for me more these days. Sacramento friends, there's a relatively new Sushi spot in town! Naoki is located in a very familiar space in Midtown, and everything about Naoki it's already an improvement! The interior has been redone, and it feels lighter and a little bit more Restaurant. As a heads up, they've only been open for about 7/8 months and don't really have an established happy hour yet, but I understand that they are working on creating one! They have a pretty extensive sushi menu, and you may get lost in all of the choices, and there are many delicious ones that I definitely want to go back and try! One of my Foodie friends, and I decided to start out with the spicy edamame. It definitely would not be a choice for either one of us. We found that the edamame was not completely boiled, and the spicy seasoning while poured on top, definitely would've been more enjoyable if the edamame had time to marinate in it. Overall, we didn't really care for its flavor or spice level. The assorted tempura was pretty tasty! The batter is light, and the veggies and shrimp are delicious. The dipping sauce was pretty mid-level and I would've enjoyed something with more flavor and something that would've enhanced the tempura. The Hinoka roll was larger than I anticipated, which is always a good thing, and I ordered this based on the recommendation of the waitress. The roll was mid-level. Not absolutely fabulous, but not horrible either. They are very light handed on the sauce on top of the rolls, and I did request some Unagi sauce, which definitely helped to elevate the flavor profile We both loved the way the Nigiri was presented, and definitely made for fun conversation. The Nigiri is pricey, and was tasty. Naoki definitely should be given grace since they are newer. The staff is pretty attentive, and I'm hoping that they find their groove in our community They have their own parking lot with free parking, which is always a plus when you're in or near the downtown/Midtown area. First time here and we loved (almost) everything. The location is the old capital aquarium where I have gone to shop for salt water fishes, so quite appropriate for sushi! Loved 1. Sake (Salmon) Nigiri was excellent in freshness, presentation, and extra effort preparation. The rice is unique too. Great quality overall 2. Hamachi Kama was fresh and comes with a nice side salad. The dip was great and I asked for a side of daikon (which is common for this dish, but you will have to ask for it here). 3. Bento box was excellent with chicken katsu and sesame chicken Meh 4. Crab fried rice... oddly includes crunchy bits of rice (none of us liked that element). Crab was fresh, but the dish tasted very oddly bland. Newly renovated restaurant. It's pretty inside. The OMF roll was delicious! I usually do not go for the sushi rolls but this one was surprisingly really tasty. The nigiris were fresh, sashimi were thick and my favorite Amaebi's heads was perfectly fried, Shrimp body was fresh and Sweet! My husband and I chose Naoki to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had a reservation for 4:45pm just in case and the parking lot was almost full. We got seated immediately but it took a while to get our order in. We started with the uni pasta to share, which came out relatively quickly. The pasta was well coated and tasted great, but portion seemed a bit small compared to other photos posted. We both opted for the chef's nigiri omakase that ended up being $65 each. The nigiri pieces were big and flavorful with a beautiful presentation. Slightly on the higher end compared to other sushi restaurants I've been to. Found out they do offer an omakase dining experience for $195 per person but reservations are required. Overall, food was great. Wait staff were very busy, so service was a bit slow. Stopped here on a whim as the other sushi spot we wanted to go to was too long of a wait. We were seated very promptly on an early Friday evening and found the decor very nice and the staff very welcoming. Unfortunately, that ends the nice experience of our meal. We ordered quite a variety of dishes with the expectation of fresh and quality fish. We ordered the hamachi kama to start and this was dry and not very flakey which hints that the cut of fish served to us was not very fresh. Next was the Paris Sashimi (16 pcs for $52) - for the price I expected better quality pieces of fish but this was also disappointing as the seaweed salad was the best tasting item on the plate. I am very sorry to say the rainbow roll was the most unappetizing rainbow roll I have ever seen... I expected something more colorful and slightly larger pieces of fish but it seemed to lean too heavily on the topiko topping for any sort of color. The imitation crab filling had too much mayo/cream cheese and completely overpowered the taste of the roll. This was our least favorite. I honestly couldn't believe this was an $18 roll We finished off with Salmon Skin Cucumber and Negihama handrolls. The salmon skin was tossed in an overly sweet marinade which completely took away the crispy texture of the salmon skin. Not enjoyable. The negihama hand roll was the best thing out of our entire meal and the only thing I ate that had no negative comments. Overall, I expected a better quality here, especially for the high prices that are charged for each dish. I really can not recommend this spot and will not be back. read more

this was such a great dinner. i loved the interior design with all the wall decor and even the private room with the tatami table. this place seems perfect for dates, small groups, or large groups. the servers were all very kind and we got our foods and drinks quickly. for drinks we got the yuzu bomb which was sapporo beer and yuzu sake. it was so good and the yuzu flavor was so strong. so tart and refreshing. the drink was surprisingly strong in alcohol too oh my.... the food was sohrrr yummy. planned to only eat a few things but got way more than expected. every single dish was delicious. for the creamy salmon and truffle hamachi, each component on the plate complimented the fish so well and i loved each bite. the ikura on the plate was my favorite part for each dish. we also got the ikura nigiri, salmon avocado handroll, california handroll, and salmon skin and cucumber handroll. they stuff these pieces with lots of fish. the salmon skin handroll was probably our favorite of the three with how flavorful and crunchy it was. each fish was honestly a 10/10. highk the creamy salmon, ikura nigiri, and salmon skin handroll were the best bites of the night. would definitely eat here again but sucks i'm not from here :( loved that my friend introduced this spot to me when i came to visit! read more

I was surprised to see a new sushi restaurant at this location that was previously Koi. I was curious to try it because we enjoyed Koi very much, especially the happy hour. They have transformed the interior with cushion seats lining the wall. Modern decor, one private tatami room and it looks like they replace the furniture. Dim lightning with romantic vibe. A nice place to take your first date! :-) OYSTERS - It was fresh with a nice presentation. The sauce was good and nicely incorporated with the oyster. CAMILA ROLL with shrimp tempura, scallop, lemon inside, topped with salmon and mayo. I don't see lemon inside the roll that often. It was a refreshing experience. UNAGI AVOCADO was average. The rice wasn't packed tight enough as grains of rice was falling off before the piece could reach my mouth. IKURA was also average. Not the best I had but wasn't bad. PARIS SASHIMI (16 pcs.) Pieces were cut on the thinner side but fresh. I was expecting to have more side stuff like sunomono salad or a bit more seaweed salad. It would also be helpful for the waitress to announce each type of fish. I had an idea what they are but my friend didn't. Also, this came at least an hour after we sat down. At one point, I wonder if they forgot it because it wasn't that busy when we got there. The waitress did apologize and offered us another bottle of hot sake or took off the one we had. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. I think there is room for improvement. When I pulled into the parking lot and entered the restaurant, I thought the place looked familiar. I later realized it used to be another Japanese restaurant- Koi. Anyways, my friends and I came here for dinner. The food came out fairly quickly. We started with stuffed mushrooms- big and crunchy. I had the summer roll, which came with salmon on top and chutoro outside. I also tried my friend's rolls- OMFG, Salmon 2 Ways, and Triple Trouble. All of them were enjoyable and the fish tasted fresh. The service was great. They were also nice enough to provide us with a candle for the cake we had with us. read more

We ordered $200 worth of food which included the Uni pasta, triple trouble, salmon 2 ways, spider mushroom, tonkatsu ramen, and the suki roll. It was nice that they had some vegan rolls that weren't just avocado rolls. My sister was happy to be able to order at one place with us. I'm not sure when the grand opening was, but the sign was still hanging up when we got there. The Uni pasta was good, but I wish I had it fresh. I think I would have loved it more. The rolls were decent and we had a little bit of variety. I always cautious going towards 29th St. because of the limited parking but was really happy that they had their own parking lot. I was also able to walk down to Pushkin as well. Inside the restaurant there wasn't an abundance of tables. I hope they get busy, because I think they previously took over this restaurant. read more

The restaurant is absolutely beautiful on the inside, lots of seating at the bar where the chefs prepare the food and there's tvs to watch sports (which we did for football Monday), booths, and tables too. It is a great spot for a date night or dinner with friends. The staff were super nice and friendly, the chefs were so great when it came to giving us recommendations and checking on how we were doing. We shared spicy edamame which has a decent level of spice from the chili powder they put. I ordered the Hinoka roll (recommended to me) and it was delicious! Naoki is officially the new IT spot for Japanese! The husband and I enjoyed Koi (the previous Japanese restaurant that was at this location) and were saddened when they closed. Luckily, Naoki has filled this location and are dare I say, even better! The family and I popped in here for the husband's birthday lunch (father-in-law made a reservation for 11am but they were empty until about noon, then it got busy). The interior is gorgeous! Freshly renovated, tasteful, and clean. We all ordered bento boxes and were stuffed by the end of our meals. Bento lunch comes with the typical miso soup, rice, and salad. My two items were the chicken katsu and mixed tempura. The bento was great and delicious. We loved it! Highly recommend! We'll be back! read more

WHAT WE GOT: The Lor, The Phoenix, The triple trouble and pepperfin. The Lor was my favorite! they top it off with this garlic chili oil alongside the tempura jalapeño it just makes the best combo. It also has asparagus in it which made me tilt my head a little but it went so well with the roll. The Triple trouble has lemon on it and added a good balance with the other rolls, a good palate cleanser! The Phoenix was my next favorite, it had a hint of cream cheese with the crunchy garlic oil it and the fried leeks!! so yum. Looking to come back and try other rolls. The pepper fin was good, nothing spectacular. I like my pepperfin fatty. This had more of a bite to it. AMBIANCE/SERVICE: They replaced my old sushi spot but it didn't disappoint. Had a date night with my lovely girlfriend and I decided to give this place a shot. For starter the restaurant is very cute on the interior, definitely a good ambiance. We started our night with the spicy edamame & Wagyu Nigiri. The edamame was not spicy at all to be honest more so garlic flavor. I would have loved more spice and hotter in temp. As for the nigiri, they were well portioned slices with a beautiful sear. They were a bit too fatty for my liking but overall a tender and flavorful cut. Finished off with the beautiful Hinoka roll and it was definitely tasty. The mayo topping was a bit too much for me but the lemon definitely balanced out the roll. As for the service, not top tier to be honest we couldn't tell if a woman or man was our server. They were bouncing in and out from our table so it was hard to tell who was our actual server. My friend recently started working here and raved about the food, so I had to check it out for myself. They're a fairly new restaurant, so when we went in on a Saturday night it wasn't super busy, but we were sat in this cute little private room that you walk up into wit your shoes off and sit on the edge of the floor with your feet slid down underneath the table. I hope I'm describing that well, but it was so different but also so comfortable. If you're sitting against the wall you can really lounge after the meal and spread out. Serving the table is a little awkward since there were sliding doors on the two sides opposite of the walls that we tried to keep closed cause of how much noise we were making, and since we were a party of 11, the server would always have to reach over someone with the food. However, since we weren't in separate seats it was pretty easy to move out of the way. The food though was phenomenal. Prices were pretty standard for sushi, with no 50% off rolls or anything like that, but I could tell with every dish that high quality ingredients were used throughout. Salmon skin salad--crispy despite sitting on a bed of wakame. I don't even like octopus that much but all the textures together just complement each other. Uni pasta was creamy and rich, and the sharper taste of the ikura really helped balance out the dish. The chicken katsu was moist, and the veggies weren't overcooked or soggy. The side salad was a good size as well, with some veggies which doesn't seem common when I get side salads at other Japanese restaurants. Karaage wasn't my favorite, with a bit more fried bits than I would like. However the brussel sprouts were fried just right, with nothing visibly burnt. The summer roll was one of the first rolls that caught my eye on the menu, and same for some of my friends too. I don't find chutoro in or on rolls often, and this roll with a healthy amount of micro greens didn't disappoint on delicate balanced with crunch. I don't normally order lion king anymore since baked rolls have lost their appeal to me over the years, but the group wants what it wants. This one didn't move the needle for me either. Regardless, the Naoki signature platter was spectacular. The presentation with the fog coming out of the small jars to the bamboo ladder providing some more depth to the display of fish. The little visual details provided a glimpse into how much care was put into the platter, and the freshness of the fish matched, if not surpassed, that level of care. I 100% would come back to this establishment but reserve it only for special occasions. I want to make sure the novelty wears off slowly, even though I'm sure this place will wow me every time. read more

I have been coming to this location since it used to be a Capitol Aquarium, and have many fond memories coming to see the fish as a child. Later it was turned into fairly good sushi restaurant (the irony and jokes never get old) called Koi Sushi and it even kept the koi pond from the original aquarium. When I heard Koi Sushi closed I was sad but not surprised since it was usually pretty empty in there. I'd imagine it's a hard location to work with given there is not much foot traffic. But I was glad to see it reopened as Naoki. Unfortunately the iconic koi pond is gone which is sad from a historical standpoint. But the interior has been remodeled in a very aesthetically pleasing minimalist/modern Japanese style. We came for lunch shortly after they opened and were seated immediately since we were the only ones in. We ordered shishito peppers for an appetizer, six oysters on the half shell, and two rolls to share: the Suki and Triple Trouble. The service was great and very attentive and the food came out fast. The shishito peppers were great. Perfectly blistered with a lovely citrus, salt, and a soy flavor. The oysters were fantastic. Super fresh and topped with fish eggs and what I assume is a ponzu. But the real star was the pickled wasabi topping. It was kind of like a mignonette inspired creation and it was absolutely delicious and well executed. Easily my favorite bite of the day. The rolls were also fantastic. Coming from someone who prefers sashimi and nigiri, sometimes a good roll hits the spot and these did. The Suki was huge, probably a two biter, packed with shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, salmon, more tuna, and hamachi. It had a nice creamy and sweet savory vibe. By contrast the Triple Trouble was really clean and fresh tasting with the lemon slices, which I always love on a roll. The different colored fish eggs were a nice touch too. I did not taste the truffle sauce at all with this one to be honest, but both rolls were delicious. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and will definitely come back. A lot of sushi in downtown is admittedly mid, but this was quality and fresh so it is worth the trip. Let's hope Naoki is here to stay! read more

The food here is sooo good but the service is so bad. Honestly one of the best sushi spots in sac but I've been here twice now and the service is horrible. They only had a few tables tonight and our waitress not once came up to us to ask how the food was or to refill our drinks. She came by at the end to drop the check off and didn't even offer us a box. I had to get up and go to the sushi bar to ask for one. I really hope they train the wait staff or hire better ones as this place could be amazing if they do. read more

I know there's always been a sushi spot in that building but never realized it got closed and turned into a new spot. This past week I drove by this establishment twice before deciding to actually come in and give it a shot. Without a doubt, Naoki has the potential to become a TOP sushi go to spot in Sacramento. (I say potential because they are in soft opening at the moment and some things aren't available on their menu.) We walked in and were seated pretty quickly with the staff all being very welcoming and nice. The decor in the dining area all look really amazing which gives it the perfect aesthetic for a date night. The food was all REALLY good, from the appetizer to the sushi rolls we ordered. The dancing mushrooms are probably some of the best stuffed mushroom appetizers I've ever had. I enjoyed the Lor roll the most as it came with some jalapeño tempura. The Naoki roll is also really good and filling but the Lor roll took the cake for me. Part of me would say wait for them to fully open but this is a spot you must check out before it blows up. read more

This sushi place is relatively new (about 6 months as of this review) and the timing of service shows. But I give every new business an opportunity to improve because it takes time to get staffing, food and service aligned. I will definitely give Naoki another chance when I crave sushi. That being said, this place is pretty good. The rolls we ordered were fresh and the karaage crunchy. Our server was super friendly but clearly overwhelmed as he was hustling and working a bunch of tables and large parties. Especially because we were tucked away near the bar, and he was running between there and the main dining room. We waited about 30 mins before he took our order which was mildly annoying but again, no fault of his own. When our food arrived, it was beautifully presented and we were able to enjoy everything without feeling rushed which was nice. The area is a little dicey so make sure to pay attention if you're walking to the restaurant, especially at night. They do have a parking lot which is small and gets packed around dinner and HH but you can find street parking in front. The space is very clean and decorated nicely, so it looks like a nice place for a first date-especially if your tastes lean towards Kru but you can't afford Kru prices. read more

We tried: Chicken Kaarage- it's crispy outside and moist inside it's good but bit salty ( should serve with lemon on the side) Dancing Mushroom- looks like takoyaki but it's mushroom with imitation crab and cream cheese with kick of jalapeno. Oyster half dozen- there's nothing special just the big container of ice and upside down Tabasco . oysters are okay OMFG- this is my mistake. We ask for our server reco...I'm not liking the unagi sauce on top but my husband likes it. NY nigiri- this one stands out for me it's fresh and melts on your mouth. I've seen this spot around for a while. I remember it used to be another sushi place, and I kept meaning to check it out. This time, I finally had the time and decided to stop in and I'm really glad I did. It was quiet when I arrived, just me and the chef at the sushi bar, which made for a chill and relaxed atmosphere. Everyone was super welcoming. Pete, one of the sushi chefs, was awesome. There was also another gentleman behind the bar who was just as helpful, walking me through the different types of fish and sushi they offer. Both of them really added to the experience. I ordered the Hinoka and the pepperfin, and both were absolutely delicious. Everything was fresh, full of flavor, and hit the spot--especially for a first visit. The service was great and the place started to pick up more as I was finishing up, so it definitely has a nice vibe when it gets livelier too. If you're into sushi, whether you're just a fan or more of a connoisseur, this is a place worth visiting. The staff clearly knows their craft and is happy to share their knowledge with you. First time coming here and we really enjoyed it. We ordered spicy edamame, chicken karaage, truffle hamachi, BBQ albacore, and hamachi kama. Everything came out hot and fresh. The chicken karaage was very juicy, and both me and my kid really liked it. We also ordered oysters, salmon sashimi, camila roll, and phoenix roll. Everything tasted very good. The camila roll was a little bit dry, and I think it would be better with a little more sauce. The service was fast and very welcoming. We will definitely come back again. read more
