Sadly, my favorite place at the Ala Moana food court, the curry house, which does an amazing Japanese curry, considering it's "fast food", closed after some 30 years. I will have to visit one of their other local restaurants.... I was looking around the other vast offerings at the food court, and I found this place. For "mall ramen", it was extremely good! I started with three wonton. They were decent sized, they were done very well, they were tender, and they were delicious. The beef sukiyaki Ramen was also very good. It didn't have a lot of "stuff" in it, I thought it would come with an egg, but apparently you have to order that separately. The broth was rich, and not too salty, the noodles were just the right texture, and the generous portion of beef was very very good. It had a great flavor and it was not too chewy like it can be. he noodles were very thin. I like my Ramen with a thicker noodle, I'm not sure if different types of Ramen have different noodles. The broth is warm and the spice is wonderful. There is plenty of vegetables, meat, and ramen to fill you up. If you park in the garage facing Ala Moana Blvd and enter through the entry door next to Jollibee, you'll see Naniwa-Ya Ramen on your right. The hardest part is finding a table. The service is pretty quick when not busy and you'll get a pager. When your order is ready, the pager will buzz you to pick up your order. They pack your order as if it's "to go." We ordered the miso ramen and vegetable ramen. Overall, it's pretty good. The miso broth was just right and not too salty. The veggie broth was ok, a bit on the light flavor side. I've eaten here a few times but and really enjoyed the ramen. This time I wanted to try the Udon and ordered the Tempura Udon and the 3-piece shrimp shumai. There wasn't a line so my order was done pretty fast. Because it's located in the food court area, there was a lot of noise and foot traffic but overall pretty mellow for dinner time. Let's start with the Udon. As always, everything was piping hot which I love. The serving size for me was perfect and in fact a little too much. The chew of the udon noodle was perfect. Not too chewy and not too soft. The broth was amazing. Very light and seasoned well. The tempura veggies were good but because it sits in the broth, it did get soggy but it was okay. Moving on to the shrimp shumai. Again piping hot and the size was pretty big compared to the frozen stuff you find in the store. Flavor was good. Could use a little for salt but overall I liked it. Very touristy. Portion size is really small. The gyoza are so tiny. Frozen & reheated in the microwave. The staff thought I was dumb, that I didn't see that my gyoza were not on the flat top. They were put, scorching hot, into the takeout box, and according to G.R., anything that is served that hot has been heated in the microwave. I wasn't expecting a gourmet gyoza, but maybe something a little more than, "I could have done this at home.". The flavor and texture are exactly the same as the frozen ones I did prepare at home last week, that was twice as many. The restaurant was not busy at 3:30pm on a Tuesday afternoon, so making a fresh batch would have given the staff something to do, other than standing around squawking with eachother in a foreign language. When I used to work in Ala Moana I could rely on this place for ramen that I would rate five stars. Maybe as time has gone on I realized I was just hangry during work, so anything would taste amazing. If you're in the mall, don't wanna leave, and want some simple ramen then I would come here. But if you're willing to make a short drive you'll find much more high quality ramen places. If you compare this place to it's neighbor, Barrio, it's like fast-food versus restaurant, and there's nothing wrong with that! If you eat ramen as much as I do, maybe you know the feeling of what I mean as far as flavors. The biggest differences I've noticed: noodles and price. Naniwa serves saimin noodles while barrio serves ramen so do with that information what you will. This place is also a few dollars cheaper so that could be a deciding factor for you! Although, when I came here, their gyoza dumplings were not up to par. All that considered, rating it 3/5 stars for an OK rating seems accurate to me for my experience. read more

Something strange happened over the past 10 or 15 years in the American Midwest, White people decided they know better how to make "authentic" Japanese ramen. I came here craving for noodles. I saw they had pork yakisoba so I decided to order that and a large diet coke for lunch. I got to hang out with hubby and a friend. This definitely hit the spot. Total came out to $16 or so. Not bad for the noodles I got and a large drink. I sat down and began to eat the noodles. It had great flavor and lots of veggies and thinly sliced ginger. There are a lot of ramen places out there and each claiming to have some special broth or noodle, but Naniwa-Ya has been around for decades and offers a good selection of ramen to match just about anyone's taste and at a reasonable price. You get a decent size bowl of noodles and toppings swimming in a good broth at a fair price. On top of that it is fast and ready to eat or takeout before you know it. The final nice addition is their add your topping open bar of green onion, fried garlic, and other seasonings that you can help yourself to for that extra bang to your ramen. I tried the Kimchi Lime ramen and was very pleased with it. Had lots of veggies, so it was a much healthier alternative to the other meat based ramens. I do recommend getting a side of their bamboo shoots to add to it. Yes this is a mall food court eatery, but it is as I said in my first paragraph, decent, tasty, and at a fair price.
