The decor is fun and pays homage to Colombian culture which I appreciated. Their specials menu had an Iced Banana Latte which is totally up my alley so I decided to try it. I usually get a latte with a syrup and I assumed this was exactly that - a banana syrup. Unfortunately, it was more like a frappe where the espresso, banana, and milk was blended together. I think it's misleading to call it a latte as it wasn't what I was expecting. And for ~$9, I just expected more richness from the espresso but the milk was just overpowering. Even based on the appearance, it was very milky/foamy rather than coffee or banana-forward. If I find myself back here, I'll probably go for their classic coffees instead.

Finding parking was a bit of a challenge, but I managed to snag a spot nearby. However, as soon as I stepped inside, I realized the café had no air conditioning, and with the humidity hovering at 100%, it was a stifling day--around 89°F, with intermittent rain making the air even more muggy. It was incredibly uncomfortable. Although the café offered both indoor and outdoor seating, they had all the glass doors and windows wide open, which meant that whether you were seated inside or out, the heat was unbearable. I was grateful I had arrived early to assess the situation. When I asked a staff member if they typically kept the air conditioning off, hoping to gauge my future visits, she replied, "Well, everyone wants to sit outside; it's such a beautiful day." In reality, it was the farthest thing from beautiful--a day where staying indoors seemed like the only option. I found it hard to believe that a business like this wouldn't offer air-conditioned comfort for its patrons. Thankfully, I quickly searched for another café nearby, called them, and confirmed they had indoor seating with AC. I headed over to Moa, where it was refreshingly cool, with plenty of seating and, of course, fantastic coffee. Sometimes, a little detour leads to a much better experience! I'm a native NYer, but the current state of the NYC real estate landscape is still really…read morebewildering to me at times. One day, you're walking past this boarded-up, crack house that's been in shambles your whole life on the sketchier part of Astoria's Broadway, and often have running thoughts on how the hell this place was ever inhabitable and who the hell would ever buy this place. And the next thing you know, some investors and developers snatch up this land to knock said crack house down and spin it into a new apartment building with a clean coffee shop. This side of Astoria has always been rather underserved and overlooked, and there was a time when I could recite almost every business within these 2-3 blocks that didn't move. Besides the corner cafe that's been serving the community for ages, I'm glad to see dedicated coffee shops finally sprouting on this side because it needed one badly. The best part is that it's Greek-owned, which is a testament that Astoria's Greek presence is still very strong-- and I'm sure most of the Greek residents would continue to show out for its fellow Greeks. Coffee is always great, and it does very much feel like I'm in Greece at times--even those thin straws they use are literally the same ones they use in Greece. I've only gotten a lemon poppyseed loaf once and that was very filling.
