I was passing chicken express and decided to give it a go. I had to do a double take at the price list. £1.99 for 2 pieces of fried Chicken, fries and can of Pepsi. That can't be right I thought! I love fried chicken so that was what I ordered. The elderly lady who took my order was lovely and this is obviously a family run business. There was a steady trickle of people so I had to wait while my fries were cooked. I don't mind that because it means everything is fresh. Sure enough a couple of minutes later I received 2 pieces of lovely juicy chicken, piping hot fries and a can of Pepsi! What an absolute bargain. There are seats and tables if you wish to eat in as I did because it was raining outside. When I left the old lady smiled and said goodbye, charming. They have lots of meal deals on chicken, burgers, pizzas, kebabs etc... and for the prices they are charging it would be rude not to go back! The only downside I can see is that they are not open late at night.

I live around 20 minutes away from this place, so I decided to ring in and inform the staff to be careful as the chicken is uncooked. I requested a number for a manager and I am pretty sure that he gave his number or another member of staff Here is the Number I was given: 07399910444 Name given Faisal Mr Faisal if you are the owner of this place as stated, disgusting response from you as well.. Out steps Shai Nan Kebab! I have been coming here for Kebabs and take aways for at least 6 years and have never been dissapointed. Sadly, last year it was closed for a spell after a fire destroyed most of the inside yet the new place is bigger and better than ever. Most of the skewered kebabs are kept in the chiller fridge for you to salivate over, as well as a great selection of Pakoras/samosa/bahji's. There is nothing done to any of this food in secret- the kitchen is all open plan as well as the prep area so you can see the cleanliness of the food/utensils/staff/prep areas. The skewered kebabs are cooked fresh to order in the tandor so there is a bit of waiting for your order but hey, who doesn't appreciate a wait when you can get to see the life-cycle of the food you are going to eat. The chapatis/rotis/naans are all freshly rolled and cooked to order so again, no 'kept' food. The menu is quite accomodating for most tastes- kebabs/curries/chicken/burgers/fish/chicken portions and then a new selection of desserts and ice cream shakes. Personally, we usually go for the 'Shai Nan Special kebab' which @ £7.50 offers chicken, lamb, shish.donner and masses of salad all wrapped in a freshly griddled naan with lashings of chilli and yoghurt sauce! Definitely one to open the top button of the jeans for! The Mr and i popped by here Sunday eve and got a Lamb tikka naan and I just had a craving for the donner meat and chips- absolutely spot on for both. Even after a 20 min wait we were still happy. Like i said, there are a lot of Take away shops on this shopping parade yet I've never considered trying any of the others as Shai Nan has never let me down and with the regular staff, open-plan kitchen & prep area and a great reputation I can quite justify driving out of my way to go here as I'm guarenteed to get exactly what I want-without fail!

It is refreshing to find good fast food that isn't a regular greasy pizza or dubious kebab. Instead, at The Dutch Pot, you can find quality West Indian food - curry goat, rice and peas, ginger beer, dumplings - probably because there is a large West Indian/Afro Caribbean community in Chapel Town. You can see large silver pots, the size of cauldrons, where the curry stews. In the past I have smiled sweetly and cheekily asked for a bit more curry and been given a top up for no extra charge. And, of course, its not expensive at all.

Especially since there's so much good press here for them. In typical me style, I ordered a bit of everything from the menu... Let's be clear here: there were three of us, so it wasn't just me going crazy. The things I liked included: The festivals (breaded, fried, sweet dumpling type things), the jerk chicken (a large tub of marinated, fall-off-the-bone spicy chicken), and the taster of goat curry I had was delish. The mac and cheese was decent, but definitely not excellent, and the potato fritters were not my favourite. I did enjoy the plantains and dumplings, but I was expecting a pot of gravy to come with my meal (I specifically ordered jerk with gravy as I'm not a fan of dry food) and there was no such extra pot so I couldn't really eat much of those. I was also confused as I'd ordered extra dumplings on the side, and two of our meals were meant to come with them anyway, but we only had two in total... Not so great. I don't know if it's a case of the good press raising my expectations, or the fact we ordered so much we ended up with a muddled delivery, but I wasn't bowled over by these guys. I wasn't disappointed either, so it's a straight up a-ok from me. Would order again when the fancy takes me.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, let me tell you about Island Grill. I've tried Caribbean food once before, from Dutch Pot, and wanted to give it another try somewhere new. I love jerk chicken (there's an amazing street food guy that had a stand at Belgrave once) and so I decided to dive in on Just Eat and grab a selection of bits. It's impressive that they've got a cool range of drinks -- that always endears me to a place if they serve more trad/interesting options beyond cola and the like. I ordered a regular aloe juice, because it's exciting and has aloe pieces in! (Very hydrating or what ever.) I also ordered fried chicken with rice and peas, a saltfish fritter, fried plantain, a fried dumpling, chips, callaloo, and sweet gravy -- I know, I'm a pig. Well, I'm not, actually; I just like to get a bit of everything to try. The total sum for all that was about £15 all told. And then I waited. A full hour after ordering I got a call from Island Grill's driver letting me know he'd be about 10 minutes. I appreciated the call since I was about to call myself, but there wasn't an explanation as to why it had taken so long. The delivery dude was nice, although he basically asked for a review straight away on Just Eat, and I'd not even tried the food and it was super late. Anyway, here's the lowdown: - The fried chicken was really nice, but would have benefitted from being much hotter -- I think if I'd had it on time it'd have been nicer. - The rice and peas was rice and kidney beans and I didn't much care for it. - The callaloo was hella salty, but I loved it, and it's really moreish. Plus, you don't feel so guilty that the rest of your plate is yellow-beige food with that on there. - The saltfish fritter was my favourite, but I couldn't taste much fish. It was like an awesome, salty, greasy pancake. - The plantain was nice, but not as tasty as I've had before. - The dumpling was ridiculously tasty, sweet, oily, and the perfect comfort food. - The sweet gravy was kind of like a sweet and sour sauce, but home made and went really well with the chicken and callaloo. Yum. And there it is! I think next time I need to try the curried goat or maybe a proper saltfish dish so I can get more of a feel for the cuisine! All of the above was really good but a little bit oily for my tastes. (Although I am a sucker for fried chicken.) Absolutely bulk up any order with a fritter though, as they're awesome. Update when I next try them!

It's not so much a regular choice of mine, since I've not been the happier side of tipsy in a while, but it sure is one of the *best places to go for drunk food. I always used to get the same, some southern fried chicken wings, chips and a world of mayo. And, all the salt. Yep, thems were the days. It's certainly no gourmet dining but the chaps in there were always lovely, patient (especially in dealing with drunkards like myself et al.) and the prices are filthy cheap. It certainly isn't the healthy option but there's nothing quite like it. Except, there sort of is, all along the same street. Even so, it was always a Dixy's for me. *best - as in, the 'bad is good' style of best. A guilty pleasure, if you will.

Essentially it's KFC, but open at stupid o'clock and not tucked away miles from LS1. It's not quite as tasty as KFC, but in the small hours you're unlikely to notice. As a bonus, they have chilli sauce for your chips. Dixie Chicken is good enough that, when fast food hunger pangs have struck, I've eaten it during the day. There, I've said it.
