You have Mahmood's (McDonald's), Highway (Subway) and now Charco's - which undeniably takes its cue from the insanely popular Nando's. This is perhaps the most copyright-infringing imitation of all three - the same little chicken logo, the same flame-grilled chicken offerings, and the same system of offering a choice of 'side' or, in Charco's case, 'sideline' (chips, rice, wedges etc). The menu is basically the same as Nando's too - you can get a serving of wings, or a half or quarter chicken, or a chicken breast in a pitta, as well as salas and platters and the like. How does it measure up to Nando's? Well, the food is cheaper, the service is quicker, and it's never as busy as Nando's always seems to be. The food isn't quite as nice, but it's still good and offers somewhere nice to sit down for a meal near the university, which is quite a rarity. And top marks for plagiarism.

I was passing chicken express and decided to give it a go. I had to do a double take at the price list. £1.99 for 2 pieces of fried Chicken, fries and can of Pepsi. That can't be right I thought! I love fried chicken so that was what I ordered. The elderly lady who took my order was lovely and this is obviously a family run business. There was a steady trickle of people so I had to wait while my fries were cooked. I don't mind that because it means everything is fresh. Sure enough a couple of minutes later I received 2 pieces of lovely juicy chicken, piping hot fries and a can of Pepsi! What an absolute bargain. There are seats and tables if you wish to eat in as I did because it was raining outside. When I left the old lady smiled and said goodbye, charming. They have lots of meal deals on chicken, burgers, pizzas, kebabs etc... and for the prices they are charging it would be rude not to go back! Instead, at The Dutch Pot, you can find quality West Indian food - curry goat, rice and peas, ginger beer, dumplings - probably because there is a large West Indian/Afro Caribbean community in Chapel Town. You can see large silver pots, the size of cauldrons, where the curry stews. In the past I have smiled sweetly and cheekily asked for a bit more curry and been given a top up for no extra charge. Their kebabs in naan bread, cooked in seconds as you watch, are loaded with grilled meats, salad and a selection of sauces. Such is their generosity they have the appearance of a butcher's shop squeezed between two bread vans. It is not simply the quantity as the quality is huge too. Try the massalla fish or the kebader kebabs, gorgeous!! They also prepare grilled marinated whole chickens or lamb finished off on a hot plate with fried onions served again with naan and salad. What could be healthier, grilled meats served with fat free naans, salad and a selection of yoghurt based sauces. Absolutely delicious. I've visited this takeaway frequently for the last six years and never been disappointed. 5 stars all the way!!

It's certainly no gourmet dining but the chaps in there were always lovely, patient (especially in dealing with drunkards like myself et al.) and the prices are filthy cheap.
