A Portuguese restaurant in Leigh? What a find this place is! Located at the bottom end of Railway…read moreRoad, its easy to park in the surrounding streets. The restaurant is quite small, so booking is essential, and booking for a Saturday is required a few weeks ahead. A friendly welcome awaits in this family run business. I noticed that most diners were drinking Sagres or Super Bock, but I had taken a bottle of wine as BYO is also allowed for a modest corkage fee. My friend and I ordered 2 starters to share between us, the cod fishcakes and the sweet potato garlic bread. Both were really delicious, the fishcakes were exceptionally delicious and so fresh and were served with a home made tartare sauce which must be the nicest I ever tasted. The sweet potato garlic bread was quite heavy, though delicious and very garlicky, and perfect to share. For my main I had ordered a chicken and chorizo skewer. This was served on a suspended skewer above a pot of their delightful home made sauce. I also had a portion of chips and some rice on the side. The portion size was great for a hearty appetite, and the meat was so tender and tasty - and the sauce was full of flavour. I shouldn't have had a dessert as I was really too full, but I couldn't resist, I had the after eight cheesecake. In too many restaurants the desserts are a bit of an afterthought and something thats just grabbed from the freezer. Not so here, its obvious that as much effort goes into the desserts as in the other courses. Again, home made and very original, and as delicious as the rest. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Perola Do Mar, and I am sure that I will be visiting many more times in the future.

Food wise, bit of a mixed bag: 1) Very good - Codfish (bacalao) patties - Cheese and spinach patties - Fish and shrimp croquettes - Stuffed peppers with minced beef and cheese - Chorizo flamed in red wine (I mean, it's just chorizo but it's hard to mess chorizo up) I would definitely have these if I went back and that would be a great meal. The first two in particular were excellent. 2) Fine - Batatas bravas (not bad at all, just not that memorable either) - Goat cheese wrapped in filo pastry (although others really liked this) - Salada di polvo (this was generally well received although not the best thing we had) - Gambas piri piri (not very spicy) - Tempera battered fried vegetables (these were a bit chewy, although I kind of liked that about them) 3) Not so great - Calamari (again, chewy) - Garlic bread Looking at the above it seems to me that the more Portuguese sounding dishes were generally the best, which is a pretty good sign. We didn't try any mains so can't comment on those, they're not that cheap though. Tapas were buy 3 get a 4th free the night we went, which was excellent value - between four our food was less than £12 a head and as you can see from the above we had a great range. Finally I didn't drink any alcohol but the Portuguese wine and port I understood was a bit rough!

Taste card offers a hefty 50% discount here - but without it the pricing is on the steep side. They do an early bird offer for those of you lucky folk who finish work early. If this was on Beech Road it'd be packed out every night. I really hope it does well and will certainly be going back.

Curry is now an integral part of English cuisine and loved by many. Especially me. It has even been…read moresuggested that Indian curries are more frequently consumed than traditional English dishes such as fish and chips, which is not hard to believe considering that when cooked correctly with quality ingredients, curry is far more complex in flavor thus more mouth watering and satisfying to eat. Currently celebrating 25 years of successful business, Rajas is undoubtedly one of the best curry houses in Leeds. Despite it's surroundings (Harehills is slightly run down and nowhere near glitzy glam), it is a true diamond in the rough. Well known for it's quality and delicious dishes, it has been voted one of the Top Ten Indian Restaurants in the UK twice by the Times newspaper. The menu is an array of all the greats you would expect, at extremely competitive prices. Most starters are around £1 - £2 (apart from the fresh water prawns which are more like £5) and mains between £4 and £10. If there is something you would like which is not on the menu they will cook it for a service charge of 10%.

The exterior of Raja's…read morelooks pretty bog standard, and the decor is unremarkable in that it echoes the many many interiors of Indian restaurants up and down the country. Proclamations of it's greatness didn't really fill me up with much hope of a good curry. It looks like many I've been in and walked past and when I've left I've felt completely deflated that I dared to get my hopes up. Even the "really and honestly it's a beauty" didn't do it for me. Walking through the doors, in the middle of my party, we were all given a hearty welcoming by the smartly dressed staff. We were shortly shown to our table, and the thing I was really impressed by was the open kitchen, making it easy to view how our future belly fodder was to be cooked and prepared. I'm always impressed with open kitchens, that nothing to hide approach instills much confidence in me. The menu. All the usual starters, sundries, mains and sides, every form of samosa, pakora, tandoori, korma, massala, dopiaza, biryani, roti, naan, soft drinks, beers, wines, juices, lassi. So what makes it special? The taste. Fresh, mouthwatering, full flavoured, homecooking. It really does earn the accolades that have been given to Raja's over the past 25 years. Several silver dishes adorned our table, steaming hot and smelling divine, the biryani my personal favourite, with the rice not dry and sad, but moist and delicious, no sign of a microwave in sight, and the curry sauce was a delicious accompaniment. Yum. We were well tended to throughout the evening, and the service quality matched the quality of the food. Price wise it was unbelievably reasonable, with it working out between £9 and £15 a head depending on meat free, meat, and prawn options. All of us had at least one drink and a main, and the rest either had a starter or a side order. Love it.
