You have Mahmood's (McDonald's), Highway (Subway) and now Charco's - which undeniably takes its cue from the insanely popular Nando's. This is perhaps the most copyright-infringing imitation of all three - the same little chicken logo, the same flame-grilled chicken offerings, and the same system of offering a choice of 'side' or, in Charco's case, 'sideline' (chips, rice, wedges etc). The menu is basically the same as Nando's too - you can get a serving of wings, or a half or quarter chicken, or a chicken breast in a pitta, as well as salas and platters and the like. How does it measure up to Nando's? Well, the food is cheaper, the service is quicker, and it's never as busy as Nando's always seems to be. The food isn't quite as nice, but it's still good and offers somewhere nice to sit down for a meal near the university, which is quite a rarity. And top marks for plagiarism.

The restaurant is quite small, so booking is essential, and booking for a Saturday is required a few weeks ahead. A friendly welcome awaits in this family run business. I noticed that most diners were drinking Sagres or Super Bock, but I had taken a bottle of wine as BYO is also allowed for a modest corkage fee. My friend and I ordered 2 starters to share between us, the cod fishcakes and the sweet potato garlic bread. Both were really delicious, the fishcakes were exceptionally delicious and so fresh and were served with a home made tartare sauce which must be the nicest I ever tasted. The sweet potato garlic bread was quite heavy, though delicious and very garlicky, and perfect to share. For my main I had ordered a chicken and chorizo skewer. This was served on a suspended skewer above a pot of their delightful home made sauce. I also had a portion of chips and some rice on the side. The portion size was great for a hearty appetite, and the meat was so tender and tasty - and the sauce was full of flavour. I shouldn't have had a dessert as I was really too full, but I couldn't resist, I had the after eight cheesecake. In too many restaurants the desserts are a bit of an afterthought and something thats just grabbed from the freezer. Not so here, its obvious that as much effort goes into the desserts as in the other courses. Again, home made and very original, and as delicious as the rest. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Perola Do Mar, and I am sure that I will be visiting many more times in the future.

To many, that might seem like a crazy thought, but that just goes…read moreto show how modern, innovative and forward-thinking Extra actually is, to have brands such as Nando's, it is one of the few Nando's locations to actually be inside a service station, being located in Extra on Skelton Lake. Unlike other outlets nearby, they don't charge more for the location which is a credit to Nando's ethos as a brand as I often feel frustrated at the pricing of food at motorway services, a visit to Starbucks across the way or the nearby Texaco garage will make you realise how rare this is. The staff seemed pretty friendly and the indoor area was a little small, but still had enough room considering the large communal seating area outside. It felt pretty modern inside. This store has been closed for quite a long time due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting travel, but they did re-open in April, despite visiting not long after the re-opening, the staff did seem friendly and happy to be back, which was nice to see. I do think based on the location it would be nice if they adapted their menu similar to what they've done at London Gatwick, which is the only Nando's in the country to have a breakfast menu, I think that could do really well here based on the location and a lack of similar offerings within Extra Skelton Lake. My food quality was fine, I did find the chips tasted re-heated, they weren't hot and were slightly soggy so it was disappointing, again I do find the takeaway packaging to be poor quality and messy, but this is common at all Nando's locations.
