We had an awful meal last night. It will be our last time there. The calamari appetizer was small pieces and had almost as much breaded pepper as calamari. The filet was cold. Salmon was not seasoned well and the barley with it was so greasy that my partner couldn't finish it and neither could I the next day. This was our third time there. I had to promise my very upset spouse that I would not take him there again. I think the owner Matt Kelly should stop opening new restaurants and focus on quality at his existing ones. read more

My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Nana's, and we were not disappointed. The food, service, and atmosphere did not disappoint. It was a bit noisy, but that did not detract from the overall experience. We made reservations, as suggested, and arrived earlier than expected but were seated immediately without hesitation. Our server was pleasant and very attentive. She immediately took our drink orders and was very helpful in explaining the items on the menu and offering suggestions. She was knowledgeable and did not hesitate or seem annoyed when we asked questions. The menu's à la carte; however, some menu options items need no additional items. The sides are shareable, and the portions are generous. Our food was exceptional. We chose calamari as an appetizer and wanted more. The Caesar salad was the best I've had in a long time. Our steaks were cooked to perfection... melted in our mouths! If you're ever in Durham and want a fantastic dining experience, this is the place. It is pricey but worth it. You get what you pay for. read more

I have been here twice now, and let me say the food and drinks are AMAZING. I got the filet both times because it is just that good. The side dishes were also great but note one side dish is typically good for 2-3 people because they are big! The espresso martinis are the best Iv ever have and I have had a lot of them. Chefs kiss. I can't wait to come back, it's a bit of a hike from me now but it is 100% worth it. Sometimes parking can be tricky and we end up having to pay to park in the parking garage next door, but come early enough you might be able to find street parking. Also a perfect place to eat before a event at the dpac since it's right next to it! read more

First our server was terrific . Prime rib looks nothing like the picture. We found the prices to be high like a 5 star steak house , the atmosphere, the service and the food do not keep up . They were out of bread at 8:00 on a Saturday night . and they need to clean the windows into the "open kitchen". read more

I would give a negative # if available. stopped in after a show at DPAC Happened to be a satirical comedian from the conservative side of the spectrum. Bar tender made a snide comment and didn't serve us while serving others at the bar. our money spends just like everyone else's. will never recommend and will never go back. another near by establishment got our $$ with over 20% tip Not smart! read more

The service is friendly and top notch. If they know you are going to DPAC for a show, they will try to help you get out on time. We have never had a bad meal at Nana Steak. It is our go to in Durham! read more

If you're going to put steak in your business name it should be superlative in my opinion. Nana's is definitely not that. Our group had 3 filets and a prime rib. Salting steaks is an art. Nana's missed that class. Overly salted that turned a lovely cut of meat into something less. If you don't time the salting correctly you can do just that, 6 ounces of meat at $40 with no sides deserves a better approach. The prime rib was sinewy and required way too much effort to cut and chew. Again not what you expect from a 'steak' house. Service was good, sides were fine. When we were leaving I asked for a toothpick. (They seem to coexist with steaks.) They took me to the bar where I was offered to choose one from a bowl of unwrapped picks. No thanks. Not even allowed by the health department in my part of the world. If I was to do it again, I would definitely tell them to skip the salt and examine the prime rib before accepting the dish. read more

As always the food and service is exquisite. What a lovely option to have your food packaged and held until after the DPAC show especially now that the heat is here. My only complaint is the temperature in the restaurant. I know it's hard to keep it cool with people coming in and out. But it was uncomfortably warm, to the point it was difficult to enjoy the meal. read more

Very good service but food/drinks were very average. We love steak and wanted to try out a new steakhouse in the area, but we will definitely be sticking to the ones we know. We got sat in the back room which had strange decor and felt off. Maybe if we would have been in the main dining room it would have been a different experience. read more

Great spot. Ask them to make you a Caipirinha cocktail. You will love it. I had a filet and it was very good. They also had a chimichurri sauce that was fantastic. Enjoy! read more

It was really crowded when we went because there was a show right next door at the DPAC but the waitress was amazing and got us a table outside. The food took a while but it was worth it!! The prime rib was melt-in-your-mouth soft and the filet mignon was really good too. The salmon was good and the sauce but I'm not a big fan of the black lentils. the fries were okay like normal fries. read more

One of the best restaurants in the triangle. The food and service are amazing. The best steaks of any steakhouse we have tried. The sides are also incredible and have a great southern flair. The bar and cocktail selection are also top notch, including an extensive Bourbon selection. It can be tough to get a reservation given the proximity to DPAC, but it's worth it to plan in advance. The dining area is comfortable and there is also a nice bar area with high tops and bar seats. Well worth the visit and price! read more

Best experience in my life. We didn't have a reservation but was accommodated after a short wait. Both people taking care of seating people were extremely friendly and helpful. I am handicapped and they were very welcoming to ensure that I was comfortable while I was waiting. Once seated our server made us feel welcome and exceeded our expectations. Her recommendations were very helpful and made our meal much more enjoyable. The food was the best I have ever eaten. The steak was much better than I have eaten at Angus Barn or Ray's. Thank you for a wonderful evening and a great dinner. read more

My wife and I had two out of town guest join us at Nana. This was both our first visit. The food was hot and prepared as requested, but the flavor/taste of the steaks(ribeye/prime rib) was not to our liking. The service was good as was the ambiance but not great. When I spend this type of money my expectations are high and Nana's did not meet our expectations. read more

On 5/13 we were visiting and wanted to try this, since the previous Nana's had closed. Glad we had a reservation, as it was busy even at 5:30pm. It's certainly a very contemporary environment, rather than "stuffy steak place" surroundings. We ordered cocktails and wine while we reviewed the menu. The owners recognized our guest as a frequent patron of the previous Nana's. Had a great exchange about the wines and menu items. Since the specialty was Prime Rib the 3 of us ordered them. Just WONDERFUL! I looked at the size and couldn't believe I'd eat all of it, but I surprised myself. Probably THE best I've ever had. We also ordered Asparagus and the special fries, also got with a bottle of the Unity wine and the cake of the day, which was Strawberry Shortcake. Our server Colleen did a nice job and I can't think of anything we could have asked for to make this a better dining experience. read more

I've been here a couple times, and I'm surprised I didn't leave a review the first time around. Both visits were prior to a DPAC showing (duh), and both experiences were great. I'll speak more to my most recent visit for the purposes of this review. I booked a reservation for my wife's b-day, two weeks in advance for a Saturday night. This place is popular during DPAC shows, so book early. We had to go a little earlier than we originally wanted (5:30), but it all worked out great in the end, as we were out around 7:15, 45 min before the show started. My wife ordered the NY Strip with puréed potatoes, while I ordered the lamb shank and creamy veggies. We enjoyed our time and engaged in casual conversation and munched on bread, not noticing our meal was taking longer than is normal. We were offered, unprompted, a complementary appetizer. It tasted great. Our meals came shortly afterward. The NY Strip was cooked perfect. The mashed potatoes were so creamy and buttery. The shank had a wonderful gamey taste, and the creamy veggies -- which I believe was spinach -- was great as well. They asked if we wanted any dessert, but we were too full. However because it was my wife's b-day, they presented her with a single square fudge on a plate with a candle. If you've ever had a Jewish jelly ring, it tasted just like one, and was so good. Would definitely visit again. read more

Atmosphere: low lighting and lively. Service: Our main waiter Omar was amazing and funny. Food: I was expecting more flavor. The mussels were a good start. The sauce saved the overcooked mussels. The steak (rare) had little flavor and was tough. The recommendation for Brussel sprouts was awful. It was overcooked and mush when in your mouth. The sweet potato gratin was decent. It reminded me of a lasagna. The creme brûlée was amazing. I'd say for the price you could go elsewhere for a better steak and sides. read more

Friends made a reservation for a group of 5 and we were seated promptly at our reservation time. It was a crowded night and it looked as if all the tables were occupied! The restaurant is very clean and has a very fancy upscale ambiance. It could be that 4/5 of us ordered prime rib but I think we were waiting for our food for a really long time. The appetizers came out quick but maybe after 30 more minutes did the entrees arrive. There is a notice that they were understaffed during the pandemic and I suppose that's reasonable enough why the service was a little on the slower side. Our server was a pleasure though - very attentive and friendly! * Prime Rib * I was worried how this would turn out since I'm a bit picky about my steaks but ordering the prime rib medium rare was the best decision of the night! Also don't forget to ask for real horseradish if you like that stuff, otherwise there's like a creamier mild horseradish aioli that comes with the prime rib. So flavorful, so fatty and so tender. This was amazing with the real horseradish. read more

A mighty fine place to grab a steak . It was perfectly cooked & ohh so juicy. The steak was seasoned so well no additional sauce was needed. I also gave the heirloom tomatoes salad with fried okra on it a try. It was truly mind boggling. I didn't expect this kind of presentation. It was perfect‼ Lastly, I finished off my meal with the warmed upside down peach cake with a scoop of honey vanilla ice cream. Mannn was this a good treat. Give this place a try read more

Nanasteak was an awesome spot for date night! Lovely ambiance with candlelit tables, white linens, moody lighting and friendly staff. We made reservations and I definitely recommended doing so, it appears that they get booked quickly, so I don't recommend just walking in. The food was delicious. I had the NY strip and my husband had the prime rib. Everything was flavorful and seasoned to perfection. We didn't try the cocktails, but I did enjoy the ginger-tumeric non-alcoholic "mocktail" it was delicious. We enjoyed the apple tostini with ice cream for dessert. I highly recommend! If I had to describe this place in two words, it would be expensive and unique. For date night, my husband took me here; boy, was I in for a treat! The wait staff was excellent, and the food delicious. The restaurant also has a beautiful ambiance. We ordered shrimp kabobs as an appetizer (yummy), and I ordered the Brined chicken with collards and sweet potatoes for my entree. Let's just say there were no leftovers! The flavors/seasoning of the food were delicious. After a most delightful meal, we got a dessert that was equally unique and delicious. The dessert (I can't remember the name) was akin to a mandarin cheesecake. It was divine. I rank them five stars for the food, atmosphere, and service. read more

My husband and I came here for our anniversary to try something new. The location is great (park in the Aloft hotel garage off Mangum) and the restaurant itself is very nice aesthetically. We were seated quickly and our waiter was very professional throughout the night. My main complaint was that it felt very touristy. Because it is attached to a hotel, it didn't feel very Durham-y (which is strange when so many places in Durham focus on being local). We were fairly dressed up since it was our anniversary and a lot of the other people were dressed down as if they had just popped over for dinner. Also, the couple next to us (the tables along the side are fairly close together) were talking about how Durham isn't a "real" city which I found obnoxious as a proud Durhamite (not Nana Steak's fault, just something that irked me). Overall, the food was great. For starters, the free bread was AWESOME!!!!!! They had two different types and I could've just eaten the bread and been happy (plus, the bread guy comes around a lot-- he's doing a great job). Drinks were good and an average price for a fancy restaurant. The sides were also delicious. As far as the steak, I wasn't super impressed. I had the prime rib and my husband had the NY strip, which were both cooked well and clearly high quality. However, my husband is quite the amateur grillmaster, so I think I have just become accustomed to good steak. For me, it was something that I could've made at home (although I recognize that the fact that I live with someone who is also in a relationship with their Kamado grill is not the norm). We finished our meal with dessert even though we weren't hungry, and I'm glad we did. We had the ice cream sundae and it was awesome. I had told them in advance that it was our anniversary so they put a candle in the sundae and our waiter wished us congratulations (I was kind of hoping for a free glass of champagne, but it was still something). Overall it was a good experience and I would consider going before or after a DPAC show for some of the cheaper dishes like the pasta (as another Yelper pointed out, you can actually make a meal for a reasonable price if you stick with pastas and sides) or a dessert-- otherwise, I will be sticking to the original Nana's for my fine dining. read more

I had the Ribeye Steak, and my wife had The Brime Chicken. Both Entrees were cooked to perfection ! The Side's were also cooked to perfection as well ! Awesome service, steaks and drinks. Ambiance is nice but does not compare to the price of a dinner for 3. Reservations aren't easy to get given their policy using the on line open table. When calling the restaurant they are even less helpful. The message I received is that they know where their customer base is coming from and if you are not attending a DPAC event or an event in the area then Nanasteak does not need your business. So this year I have selected another venue and yes able to make reservations two months out. read more

Their fries is a must try! Everything is good including their cocktails. But, I will say that I have never tried better fries!

Great service and COVID-safe setting, a-okay food. Made a reservation one day in advance for a group of friends and was happy to hear they were able to accommodate our group. I really appreciated the multiple reminders they gave about only offering outdoor dining for the time being - they cautioned us to dress warmly (even though there would be patio heaters) and mentioned this not just when I first called to book, but again they day-of when they called me to confirm our attendance ("You'd be surprised - even though we warn people, some guests still show up in shorts and then freeze!") Although the inside of the restaurant looked ideal, the outside was rather pleasant as well - string lights, plenty of spaced out tables under an open tent, standing heaters left and right that kept us sufficiently warm. All of the staff members were very friendly throughout the entire night. Onto drinks and food - I ordered the St. Charlotte cocktail (okay okay...I got two of them) - perfect if you like tart, refreshing vodka based drinks like I do. Our group split two orders of the crispy pork ribs appetizer, which was great - perfectly crispy skin, with great flavor (note that one order comes with 3 ribs). For my entrée, I chose the filet mignon, which was a bit disappointing. Although the steak was accurately cooked to a medium temperature, it was a bit too salty and lacked the melt-in-your-mouth factor that I tend to find with filets from other steakhouses. The fries and brussels sprouts were pretty standard, but I did like the béarnaise dipping sauce that came with the dish. Finally, we concluded our meal with a couple desserts - the vanilla bean crème brulee as well as the brownie (served with ice cream) - both were delicious! They also brought a bonus mini dessert with a candle for the birthday boy - I think it was some type of nut fudge. Overall, a pleasant experience but not the best steak I've had. Check it out if you want great service and tasty desserts! read more

We didn't have a reservation but the hostess was friendly and put our name on a waitlist for the bar side seating. We waited no more than 30 minutes . Service was outstanding and the food was amazing. Prime rib flavor was one of the best. Sides were fresh and shareable. The ambiance was classic and close to the theater we were attending after dinner. Parking is street or parking garage. Met one of the owners who was out on the floor helping with guests orders and delivering food. A great personality and was thankful we had chose them for dinner. read more

Bartender Justin was awesome. So convenient for a DPAC show. Mashed potatoes and green beans were excellent but prime rib wasn't as good as I predicted. The ribeye steak was fabulous and full of flavor. Terrific selection of tequila and bourbon! read more

Saturday was our third visit for dinner, first since Covid. We went with these guys because we could reliably get a reservation for an outside table - for the record, Yelp isn't always great about accurately flagging places with outdoor seating, but restaurants that use OpenTable let you reserve a table outside. They have a small but manageable quarantine menu. We got a ribeye steak, perfectly cooked, and a cottage pie, which is a lot like shepherd's pie. Both were excellent. As usual service was top notch, as were cocktails. read more

The steals were cooked to the perfect temperature. However one side was charred, almost blackened. Both steaks were clearly burned on one side. The taste was outstanding and I never get a steak done right so I was very pleased with the steak. The wedge salad was not great. I love a wedge salad so I was quite disappointed. The Brussels sprouts were burned as well and the only reason we didn't send them back was the outstanding flavor. The calamari was not very good at all. I don't expect a frozen appetizer in a restaurant that is this pricy. The desserts were horrid. The chocolate cake was tasteless. The strawberry shortcake was so dry that not even 5e juice of the berries saved it. The creme brûlée was so bland that I'm positive they forgot the vanilla. All in all, if I am spending $300 on a meal for 3 I expect it to be outstanding and this was a huge disappointment! I wanted their burger because I heard it was amazing but you can't get the burger in the dining room. How snobby is that??? read more

Dined here yesterday just before the Bob Dylan concert. The location is prime if you're looking for proximity and convenience to DPAC. Ample free parking at the decks are just next door. I was able to make a reservation with very short notice. We were promptly seated upon entry. I was pleasantly surprised since we arrived 15 mins ahead of our reservation time and with a major event going on at DPAC that night. Entrance opens directly into the bar area. The dining areas are to the right and also upstairs. Atmosphere is very chic and modern. There was ample seating availability on the mezzanine. The staircase leading up gives an impressive view of the main dining area which also showcases very high ceilings. Tables were well dressed. Service was highly attentive and impeccable. Bread service with focaccia and cornbread were a nice touch and outstanding. Ordered drinks first. They have a decent selection of drafts as well wine and cocktails. Monster IPA was enjoyable. I ordered the Crispy Pork Ribs and members of my party went with the Campanelle Pasta and the Paella. Of these three dishes, my favorite was the Paella. The mussels (as well as all of the seafood therein), the rice, and the sauce were flavorful, fresh, and satisfying. Also, very comforting. My least favorite were the ribs which I found to be overly salty and too heavily infused with soy sauce which overpowered the taste. Lastly, for dessert, we enjoyed the Pumpkin Chiffon Cake, which was the standout of the evening. It was delightfully light, airy and fondly reminiscent of a sugary Entenmann's Devil's Food Crumb donut, but fluffier. The butterscotch sauce, pecan pralines and sugared cranberries complemented the cake perfectly. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and looking forward to coming back here to try their other menu items. read more
