Mid May, was quiet. Waterfront, spacious outdoor seating with almost a wraparound deck. Open only in the warm season. Beautiful view of Lake Champlain and the Marina. Quick pleasant service. Good list of beers, wines and cocktails. Food was tasty. Rice bowl wasn't what I expected. Would have preferred the veggies all chopped up and mixed up with rice, did it myself. Went here for a late lunch/early dinner, it was wonderful! We sat on the deck overlooking the marina with great views of the lake. We ordered some drinks from the bar which were good. We ordered the onion pedals for an appetizer which could have been crispier, but were good. For entrees we ordered the harvest salad and pulled pork tacos which were very good. The waitress was good, but could have been more attentive. Overall, great environment with great views and good views. Would definitely recommend to get here and we will be returning on our next trip! read more

Our first visit this summer and once again, hoping for a miracle and just disappointed. We have been here for 45 minutes and have only gotten our drinks and appetizers. We ordered within 10 minutes of seating. Our server has not checked our empty drinks in at least 15 minutes. There are 10 full tables on the deck, not even maximum capacity and there was no wait at the door. No excuse for delayed meals and lack of refills. And the best part - there is a DOG on the deck with a table of 4. It will not stop barking at other patrons. Ridiculous. It has been an hour now and still no food. Down at the marina, the Naked Turtle is really only place to go. It's a staple, but it's only open in the summer and it's more renown for being at the water than anything else. Food: All in all, the food at the Turtle really isn't that great. Sure, we all put up with it, marginal at best, but there are a few things you can order if you need to. My mother is partial the Patron Silver and Conona Light combo, but she has heard that Turtleizza Burger (not making this up here, folks) is a fine meal. a 32-oz hamburger, and if you complete the whole thing, you get a t-shirt. Or you can just buy one. I myself don't mind the mozzerella sticks (although they are totally frozen beforehand) and the nachos don't suck. The turkey club sandwich on the croissant is also a pretty safe choice. Go for apps over food if you have to eat, but if you can get a ticket to the AYCE buffet after the Mayor's Cup Race, that's your best bet. Drinks aren't super cheap, but coming from a few years down in the City, a 50-cent tip is adequate, if that tells you anything. Good selection typical American beers and liquors, but be warned, the mixed drinks will run you some money. Venue: The Turtle, for it's lack of culinary appeal, is a big place. There are two outdoor patios and a large dining area. The bar is huge and spans the whole length of the inside. There's also a billiards table off in the back where the bathrooms are. Naked Turtle t-shirts and sailing paraphernalia line the walls and ceilings, making it fun and bright inside. It's the venue that brings you to the Turtle though. Local bands and singers make debuts all throughout the summer on the patio and indoors and the crowds are are always lively. The views are great--although not as good as those at the now-defunct Valcour Lodge--and it's a great place to go and hang out with sailors and around the boats. Aside from being nostalgic for me, the Turtle is a fun place. The food may not be great, but I've bumped up the star rating (should be a 2.5) because it is where everyone goes once the frost is gone. read more

Naked Turtle was suggested to my colleague and I as one of the local spots to go for a nice casual dinner by the water.. it did not disappoint, it was great!!! It's a nice casual spot, South a great view of the water. We ate outside on the patio and we loved it. I ordered the wings and fries and a Turtlerita.. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was because the drink was not strong at all, however I would definitely go back!!! read more

The short version: Do yourselves a favor and go to Valcour Brewing instead. The long version: My husband and I go here once or twice a year at the most. Each time is more disappointing than the last, but today was the worst. Went to the outside bar. The bartender was taking orders and then left to make their blender drinks inside without ever acknowledging we were there. After 10 minutes, she still wasn't back. We decided to try going to the inside bar. Lo and behold there was the outside bartender still making drinks. After 5 minutes of sitting there, the inside bartender still hadn't acknowledged our presence. We left. On the way out I told the hostess what happened and she said, "We were on a ten minute hold. Now we're on another ten minute hold." They've been open for the season for close to a month. I will not go back. I will instead go to Valcour Brewing. We went there after we walked out. Came with 2 friends that have been here 10-15 times before. The location was always the selling point. The food used to be ok. One person ordered chIcken tender and was told after it was served that the usual chicken tenders were sold out and was replaced with a heavily breaded and dry chicken tender. He did not finish his food. The other person asked for a hamburger, medium rare and came out well done-dry. I ordered the zucchini zoodles with salmon wHich was alright but not overly flavorful. Not complaining about that, though. Overall, the quality of the food had come down significantly from last year and throughout this year. I moved up to Plattsburgh for work over the summer and my co-workers love this place, they would come here every single weekend until they close down for the season on Labor Day. You def don't come here for the food, it's typical bar food..maybe a step up but not much. You come here for the location which is right by the water. The crowd is interesting to watch as there aren't many college kids since it's summertime so it's mostly the local folk that spend their nights here. As far as the bar scene goes in Plattsburgh (which granted doesn't have that large of a selection) this is a nice find. read more

This is a fun summer Plattsburgh bar right by the water. They have a great outdoor seating area and bar, so its a lovely place to go drinking, or for lunch and still enjoy the summer weather. Their food is good, and their prices are average. But don't expect anything amazing, just traditional American fare. The late night experience is a total 360 from the day. The bar fills up quickly and gets really crowded and loud. Drinks are expensive, and the staff is not very helpful. The Naked Turtle also features the 32 oz turtlezilla, which is the restaurants fun "eat it all and you get it free" entree. I attempted this mammoth burger after an 8 hour hike and failed miserably. It would be cool to do, since you get a t-shit and your picture on the wall, but its not a feat for those who are not practiced. Overall a good place to visit during the day, and a nice feel. read more

Very nice casual ambience, located right at the Plattsburgh Marina. Service was attentive without bring obtrusive. We shared Onion Petals as an appetizer. They were served hot with a nice horseradish dipping sauce. We also had "Stepped Up" New England Chowder. It had curry as one of the spices which actually made for a tasty dish. Stopped in last night for the first time. Love the location and atmosphere. Staff was nice and friendly and was very accommodating. Small beer selection but not a bad selection. Food wasn't that good at all. Had the NY Strip dinner. Meat wasn't that tender and I needed to season it with salt and pepper to make it a bit better than mediocre. Just had the worst restaurant experience!! We waited 40 minutes for a table..the hostess said it would be twenty minutes. We were seated and sat for 40 additional minutes while multiple waiters and waitresses completely walked around our table. We couldn't even get their attention. We were not even served a water. We decided to leave....needless to say no one even noticed! Shame on this establishment....this was a horrible introduction to Plattsburgh! Before went to "the Turtle" I had never seen a lake before. So you could imagine how in awe I was at the sight of the massive blue water circle! So cool! Lots of boats or as my dad calls them "the racecars of the waves". Great food! Even though everything I ordered they were out of! Yikes! But still awesome. we got to the door around 9:50 and they checked IDs, claiming that they were a bar at that time of night. I am not 21, so I asked if I could just go in to eat as I had not eaten anything in hours, and if they could just put a wristband on me or mark my hands so they knew I was underage. they said no. then my ENTIRE family came outside and asked if I could please go inside and just eat, but they said no. This was irritating but somewhat understandable, so we left. LATER though my aunt texted me and said that they kicked out my aunt and uncle because they had their FOUR MONTH OLD BABY with them. that was the real kicker. i will never go there again if i'm in the area. read more

Fairly pricey for the portion sizes. It definitely caters more to drinks and bar atmosphere but one of the few restaurants on Lake Champlain that you can take a boat to (they also have a parking lot for vehicles). read more

Located right on Lake Champlain in Plattsburgh, the Naked Turtle is the hot spot to go to when it is open (typically from May through early September). It's location makes it an absolute hit, being right on the water means it has a brilliant view of the water and boats plus there's plenty of outside seating. I've had some great experiences here and also some absolute terrible ones. I first went to Naked Turtle back in 2011 and the food and drinks were absolutely delicious. Service was top class. They did some fantastic rum-oriented drinks which were some of the best I have had. In 2012, my college friends and I went back and I discovered my favorite beer here on tap (Summer Wacko) and it was reasonably priced. The atmosphere was brilliant however the waitress informed us that there were a number of menu items that were not available. We still enjoyed the live music and the atmosphere. In 2014 I was really unimpressed and frankly very disappointed. There were multiple menu items that they were out of. They always seemed to be out of the calamari. We also waited to be seated for almost an hour despite their being open tables. We ended up going into the back and playing pool. There were also numerous other small nuisances about our time there. They changed their specialty drinks around from 2011 but the Champlain Lifesaver during the day for $7 was fantastic. My buddy and I polished off about 12 between the two of us! We went back the next day and asked for the same thing and it was noticeably very different. Overall, this place is obviously a place that could be great but has started to slowly decline. I'll continue to come for the Champlain Lifesaver if they keep it. If you're in Plattsburgh I would say to consider it. read more

The Naked Turtle has a reasonable menu, nice atmosphere, and beautiful view of the water, but none of those are the reason why I go back year after year. The reason I keep coming back is their monster hamburger known as the "Turtlezilla"! It's 32oz. of beef, as well as numerous slices of cheese, lettuce, tomato, 4 pickle slices, and the largest hamburger bun you will ever see! If that isn't enough, it also comes with a side order of fries. The burger costs $25, and you get a free T-Shirt if you finish. You also get your picture taken and posted on the wall. I've eaten it 5 times, and at one point I was told by staff that I had the speed record of 10:21. read more

I didn't eat there so I'm only reviewing the condition of the bar and its surroundings. The men's room smells like a urinal that was never cleaned. If they take that kind of care with a place the public sees I can imagine what kind of sanitation they practice in the kitchen. I have been so underwhelmed by the Naked Turtle in the past I have not been in nearly two years. We decided to give it another go. Things started off well with a very pleasant host. He offered us a choice of indoor or outdoor seating; we opted for outdoor seating. The menu seemed more streamlined then I remembered so my hope was they might be focusing on the quality of what they offered; something that has been lacking here for as long as I can remember. Next came the waitress who went through the motions of being attentive but seemed very disinterested. We picked up on her peculiarities of talking without making eye contact, she would look past us out to the marina, and the way she would ask the typical questions of needs or satisfaction without waiting for our reply (as she gazed past us toward the lake). Her behavior was very odd and had us chuckling. Her odd behavior actually turned out to be the highlight of our evening as the food has still not improved. It baffles me how a restaurant on the lake can be so bad for so long. Outdoor seating on the lake is not enough to compensate for such poor quality food.
