I found Naija cafe online after searching for authentic jollof in the area. My fiancée and I were really excited to try their food today. We arrived and walked in to a man sweeping and a woman at the bar.. They stared us up and down as we walked to the register. The man sweeping then walked behind the bar into the back. It was a very awkward interaction. We were immediately turned off. As we walked out the lady then asked us where we were going.. I explained that there was an African(Nigerian) restaurant near my house that I believe sold it and that would be a good reason for me to finally "try" them out. After reading reviews, I called first to see if the Fufu was available. When I called the phone was answered immediately and pleasantly. We ordered two orders of chicken and Jollof, Egusi with beef and two orders plantain. The Egusi was really good but the beef was so tough we could barely eat it. It tasted like it had been cooked hours ago and was totally dried out like jerky. Y'all should be ashamed to serve this to anyone. My sons said the Jollof was okay, but the chicken was dried out. We ordered right before the restaurant closed and the meat tasted OLD. We were told when we arrived that the Egusi didn't come with Fu Fu even though the pic on line shows it with fu fu so we had to pay an extra $4. We paid for two extra orders of plantains and were given one. When we knocked on the door to let them know (still 20 minutes before closing) they wouldn't come to the door. Y'all lazy and your business practices suck. Would you serve this old and tough meat to your family? Do better. read more

I never know if this restaurant is open or closed because there are never any cars outside. It's in the cut and not in a place for a lot of ppl to pass by. They don't really advertise either. I googled Nigerian restaurants and they came up and was open when my fav was closed. I gave it a try and it was a long wait for my food and there was no one there. The price is very high and they charge for everything as well a la cart. That's too much and I more than likely won't be back. Too far, hard to get to with construction and there was no ambiance. The young lady was nice but that's about it. My food was egusi stew with goat and fufu. I can't find a pic, but that's because I was so mad it took so long. But I will visit again! read more

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. The entire time I was waiting for my food I heard no pots or pans and no cooking. Only heard constant microwaving so the food isn't freshly made. It doesn't taste fresh at all. The flavor is decent but the quality is extremely low. I have no idea how their rating is so high... It also took a long time for them to make the food which is puzzling because everything was just microwaved... priced absolutely too high for the amount of food you receive. This is the worst restaurant despite the ethnicity that I have ever patronized. I only gave it one star because I could not give 0 stars. They served me meat that was not edible. We honestly could not bite through the bone, fat, and gristle. My order for two entree came to 55$. When i came back to complain and request a refund or replacement dinners, i was only offered more meat not replacement meals. I guess they wanted me to take all the bad meat out of the meals and replace it with the new meat. Extremely tacky. When I refused the offer and requested a refund they said that they had to wait for the manager, who was 5 minutes away to get there to open the cash register. The business is spacious and has two sides. When I walked in, nobody was in sight. That's fine, I figured they were in the back and would soon come out; they did. Their weren't many smiles or much of a greeting so I just told the guy what I ordered (whole time, his facial expression was very attentive/listening). He didn't seem to immediately recognize my order but soon after, a woman enters, standing by the kitchen door. She says that she thinks this is my order and it was. Now on to the food... All of the flavors were different for me as African food isn't my norm. But, the moin moin was good; it has a very soft texture. The potato was ok - I didn't taste much flavor, soaked in sauce notwithstanding. The chicken was light in taste and pretty good. The egusi was very different for me but mightily flavorful and SPICY . Mine had bones in it so beware. Now, the only thing that I wasn't fond of was the meat pie. It has a LOT of bread, the meat wasn't really flavorful to me, and it tasted like it had been in the freezer and heated up prior. All in all, I would probably go back for certain things and try other things so I can get a more well-rounded experience. read more

The peppered fish was delicious! Options were tilapia or croaker. I chose the croaker. I like croaker but I'm willing to deal with the extra bones. I believe either would be good. I don't usually eat the full serving of plantains. The taste and texture of them made these unusually good. They have a bit of a crust that make them especially nice. One of the other guests in my party had the peppered goat which he indicated was tasty and flavorful. We will dine here again when back in the area. read more

The only thing I would say is that they could have provided more plantains with my meal...they were a little stingy. So....after having eaten at this restaurant 3 times since I found it 2 weeks ago I think I can finally do an honest review. Based off of taste alone...I would give this restaurant a solid 4.5 stars. They don't mind heat here!! And when I think of authentic African cuisine, I think spicy. Menu selection is slim!! I would give the menu 3 stars. Not many stews and sauces to choose from. There's Egusi, vegetable, and okra. Chicken comes in a light red sauce but not much flavor to it. I haven't tried the peppered meat options yet but they look tasty. I was able to sample the pepper soup broth which was also yummy and spicy. Egusi is bomb!!! Not overly oily, flavorful, and greens haven't been overcooked. Decent amount of heat but they can make it hotter if you ask. Okra is tasty as well!! Jollof rice is bomb! Great flavor!! Fufu is also cooked very well. Not sticky or starchy. Great for dipping in sauces. Today I ordered the meat pies. They're only $2. Decent size but there's way too much dough for me. Meat didn't have much flavor or spice to it. All in all...I do like the place. Staff is friendly but....in typical African style, service is SLOOOOOOOOOOW!! Prices could be cheaper in my opinion. Large jollof rice is $10 (no meat). That's a lot for some rice in comparison to other African restaurants I've gone too. Portion size is good, but stews could be filled more in the carry out bowls. read more

OMG!! It has finally made it to Clinton. I have been waiting for an authentic African restaurant close to my house and it's finally here!! NAIJA CAFÉ is amazing! From the location, to the cleanliness of the restaurant, to most importantly the food I give it 5 STARS! I walked into this location Thursday afternoon around 7PM (after hearing about them from my sister). Well let me tell you some Authentic African Cuisine is what I got. I ordered Jollof rice with beef, and Egusi soup with Iyan (pounded yam fufu) it was delish!!! The owner even gave me FREE meat pies to try beef and chicken (what a treat!). Egusi: very well prepared, great consistency and flavors. I had it with beef and goat meat, the perfect combination for me but you can choose what you like. If you know how to make this dish you know it can go wrong very quickly because of the bitter leaf used, but not here, nope! Naija Café made this to perfection not too much palm oil, not too much salt. I will be ordering this again and you should too! Iyan (Pounded Yam FuFu): Very well made and they give you a generous amount. The ball was so plentiful I could only eat half. No lumps, No weird after taste, no fufu flour! Again, very authentic like someone was in the back pounding away lol Beef and Chicken meat pies: Home Baked to perfection. The meat well-seasoned, the crust nice and flaky, and together made me smile. This is no frozen beef patty, this was made same day by aunty in the back lol Jollof rice with beef: Ok so here's the true test. 0-10 I would give it an 8 and here's why. I'm Ivorian and I prefer our Jollof. I felt the gain of rice used were a bit big as I prefer smaller grains even broken rice. Also, I feel Ivorian/ Ghanaian Jollof is seasoned much better than any Nigerian Jollof I ever had (Don't kill me my fellow West Africans you know we always have this debate lol) But I will say it was good as well. I will even add while I was there someone called in two huge pans for their Easter event because they loved it so much... so they do cater. Over all I had a great experience the gentleman at the front is the owner and a very nice man. I hope they get plenty of business as they've only been in Clinton two months. The price is very fair and anything can be made spicy to mild depending on your tolerance level. The Asun I had was super spicy but super delish, I think next time I will ask for it a bit milder. I loved coming here. This place has sit in dining and a pool table and a bar area to wait for to-go areas. When I walked in there wasn't a lot of people but honestly, the food quality was amazing. I think they make some of the best Jollof Rice I've had from the restaurants in Maryland. I got the grilled fish with red sauce, so good. I also initially came there for the Yam pottage. One of the few places I find that had it. It was so delicious and worth the 10 dollar price tag. Yam isn't cheap, but it was delicious. The wait wasn't terrible, typical for a restaurant that cooks their food fresh. I was given a huge puff puff while I waited too. I would recommend coming here for really good rice.
