I recently visited Chaco African & Bakery Restaurant in Waldorf, and let me just say the food does not disappoint. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and seasoned to perfection. You can tell the dishes are made with authentic ingredients. The portions were generous too, so come hungry. The service was warm and welcoming from the moment we walked in. The staff was friendly, patient, and happy to explain menu items, which made the experience even better. As for the ambiance, it's clean, cozy, and inviting. The atmosphere is more of a quick sit down and dine your meal without feeling rushed definitely a great spot to visit. The food was mostly good, but the portions could be better. The jollof rice is plentiful, and while definitely not the best I have tasted it was solid. The plantains on top of it were good but I'm used to receiving more plantains than what this place provides. The oxtail was delicious and the whole grilled fish was just average - it was on the small side and not seasoned well. The puff puff was tasty and I truly enjoyed it. For the portion sizes, the price was too high. I have gotten whole fish twice the size for the same price, as well as more oxtail pieces for a lesser price. I was so excited to try Choba's especially because they are the only restaurant offering African cuisine in the area. I ordered the grilled fish with jollof rice and a side of spinach. The fish was dry, it definitely was not cooked fresh. I couldn't even eat it. The spinach wasn't very tasteful to me either. My boyfriend got the chicken with jollof rice and plantain. The chicken wasn't good and the plantain was dried out and inedible. I'm guaranteed that the food was cooked hours before we even ordered. The only thing that was decent was the jollof rice. So there ya go, we spent $40 on food to only eat the rice. I don't like leaving bad reviews, but I also don't like spending my money on food that should have never even been served. The menu offers a variety of plates (such as jollof rice, ata, waakye, beans porridge, peanut stew, efo rio, etc.), as well as other baked goods, such as red velvet rum cake and puff puffs. The hubs and I had the ox tails platter, which came with your choice of 2 sides - we opted for the plantains and for the jollof rice. You can customize the spicy level, and I just said 'not TOO spicy'! The jollof rice was very flavorful - you can definitely taste the spices and it had a nice kick! The ox tails were fork tender and very savory - I was actually pretty surprised at the amount of ox tails that came in 1 order - CHOBAS is extremely generous! We also received a side of extra hot sauce, so those who are spice fiends will love it! We also ordered some meat pies - they had 2 fillings - jerk chicken or beef, so we got one of each! Don't forget the desserts! We sampled a Puff Puff, an African donut, and it wasn't overly sweet but just a nice ending to a meal! I'd love to try out their goat and their stews on the next visit. Service is great here! We ordered takeout and they were super friendly taking our order and explaining things we had questions about. And they packaged everything perfectly! No spills or issues at all! We ordered a few things off their menu: Egusi with beef, pounded yam, plantains, Jollof Rice, peanuts stew with chicken, goat meat pepper soup, and these donut holes/hush puppies. Out of the group of us who tried the food, the Crowd pleaser are their donut holes/hush puppies kind of thing that I can't remember what they're actually called! We also liked the goat meat per soup and peanut stew. The egusi was something that was a hit or a miss within the group. I thoroughly liked it and thought it was pretty good, but the one other person who tried it thoroughly disliked it. I will say that I am more adventurous in different flavors than the rest of this group, so it was a big step for them to try something out of their comfort zone flavor profile wise. But common ground was the rice, plantains, yam, goat meat soup, peanut stew, and favorite were the donut holes. Finally stopped by CHOBAS today ! How exciting; I went ahead with traditional Egusi with goat meat and pounded yams. Ambiance and customer service: Pretty chilled environment and cozy. I called to place my takeout order ahead of time. The gentlemen that took my order was super nice and told me my ordered would be ready in 10mins. Food: It was my first time trying the Egusi and pounded yams. It was very yummy and not salty. I really liked the goat meat! Very well seasoned and although the pounded yams flavor was mild, there's just something about combining them all together that made it for such a great and unique experience. Best place to grab some African food locally, Staffs are nice, careful service with a smile every time. The food is flavorful, well portioned and always welcome in our home on a takeout night. I think i just had real Nigerian food for the first time from Choba's in Waldorf, MD and it was AMAZING! I had Nigerian's chicken wings and jollof rice before from my Nigerian sister of almost 30 years but she NEVER COOKED me anything like this! I have to rethink this relationship! The flavors were like nothing i ever had, the wings are super flavorful, tender, crispy, spicy in the back of the throat, it dissipated quickly but not before it cleared out my sinuses. The goat stew with spinach and pounded yam were super DELICIOUS, the goat was tender but not fall off the bones the spinach is super fresh not overly cooked. This was a good experience, I went in a bought the menu for my daughter to do a video. The rice taste scorched and the fish was not edible because it was so dry . But the okra soup was amazing and plantains where ok . The tomato sauce on the chicken was good and the goat was tender but way more bones then meat. We live out of area and we were doing some Christmas shopping and were so happy to see an authentic African restaurant in Waldorf! My husband and I fell in love with African cuisine when we traveled there last year, and this place does not disappoint. John was at the counter and he helped guide us through some of the items that we were unfamiliar with. We ended up with the Ata, chicken, jollef, beef patties and plantains. Everything was wonderful. The jollef was perfect, but my husband wanted to turn up the spice, so John gave us some scotch bonnet sauce. My husband said it was perfect. The patty pastries were flaky and buttery, and the plantains were sweet, but not too sweet. My husband even ordered some goat pepper soup to go. A few booths and table seating for dine-in. Just walk-in and proceed to order. The lady at the desk was pleasant and understood the menu choices. The menu is not intimidating and easy to browse. Don't be afraid to ask about the spicy level. I ordered the jollof with chicken and some plantain. There is also a kid menu option that comes with a good dose of mixed veggies. The service is slow and take much longer than most places - 15/20 minutes is common and can be much longer. Nothing special about the food. Mildly spiced with a good portion of plantain to satisfy. The jollof rice could use some of that good Nigerian flavor and taste we all expect from the best jollof in Africa. No matter what you hear, we all know who makes the best jollof!
