We tried this for the first time for breakfast. I had the Rise 'n Shine and wife had an omelette. Mine was average and wife's omelette was excellent. Service was good, but we never got spoons and used fork to stir coffee. Menu states they won't serve glass of water (must purchase bottled water), menu was limited, and only jelly was grape. While none of these was a deal-breaker, collectively they were irritating. We'd probably give it another shot, but in the meantime we'll stick with Bob's unless the Pier reopens. read more

A great local family spot for breakfast and lunch! The staff are amazing and the food is just as good! The vibe is awesome... decorated to match the historic Old Nags Head look of the historic building and lots of variety in seating (outside, booths, tables). We stumbled upon Nags Head Cafe after unsuccessfully finding a spot to eat that didn't have a crazy wait time. The hostess at Nags Head Cafe was able to seat our family immediately, and my husband and I sat at the bar while everyone else dined at a table. The menu was phenomenal, restaurant was spectacularly clean (they have a 100% health rating), but more importantly it was very clear that this was a family owned restaurant where the entire staff was treated as such. Hannah was the bartender and was so incredibly sweet and was happy to tell us all about the history of the restaurant and how much she loved working there. Even the sweet dishwasher kid came out to get a drink of water and asked us if we needed anything. Also, I had the BEST FRIED FLOUNDER SANDWICH OF MY LIFE. And we're from VB so I'm no stranger to great seafood. My husband was super impressed with his burger as well. This is our 3rd trip to Old Nags Head Cafe this week. Dinner first time, lunch 2nd time and family dinner 3rd time. Great grandchildren gave noodles 5 stars and the chicken tenders 5 stars. My granddaughter gave the shrimp and grits 5 stars, I told her she would not go wrong with them. My other adult granddaughter gave her burger 5 stars and she couldn't finish it because it was so big. We had the stuffed mushrooms again and this time they had more crabmeat and cheese. It was a 4 star app. My wife and I shared the scallops and crab combo and the scallops were cooked perfectly and the portion was good. Fresh as could be. We also each had the house salad and as always 5 stars. Service was 5 stars. Overall everyone including me was glad I picked the Old Nags Head Cafe for dinner tonight read more

This place was good. Heads up fresh squeezed orange juice is 5 dollars for three mouths full but the rest is a good amount food for the price and it was good. I suggest the pancakes really good. My son had raved about the grits so our family went for breakfast. They are stone ground grits and delicious! The coffee is roasted by the owner and also very good. Our party had sausage, toast, home made biscuits, pancakes, and eggs. Naturally we also had the grits. It was all well worth the price which we found reasonable. Love the fresh squeezed orange juice. Don't love the insanely high breakfast prices. But welcome to a tourist trap during the season. What can you do? Don't expect a bargain here. They use a local roasting company, TarHeel Roasting Company, for their coffee, which is good. It's a small place. And during our visit, I found the seating hostess to be very standoff-ish. She was young, and I doubt she realized how bad she sounded. As for service, expect nothing fast or efficient. It took Xx minutes to get our food. Making us unable to thoroughly enjoy the meal as everyone was suddenly more panicked about getting to church on time. (The portions are also small for the prices -- with the exception of the french toast.) We eat breakfast out 2-3 times per week, all summer long, in Nags Head. This was by far the longest, most frustrating wait for our food. Their kitchen needs to get their act together. It's a very small place to begin with. (Based on the constant flow of customers, they're losing a small fortune in table turnover by not maximizing revenue per table.) Many people drive on by when they see crowds of people waiting outside. Now for the breakfast food... Excellent french toast. Solidly good pancakes. Eggs were good, but how do you screw up eggs? Sausage was decent, but bland. Don't look for a lot of spice or flavor in the sausage. The food was solid for Nags Head. But not world-class or memorable. My rating would have been easily 4 stars had we not waited 40 minutes for breakfast food. How long does it take to scramble eggs and cook pancakes? My other issue is the brash nature of the staff who are clearly used to providing painfully slow service. They're obviously used to the complaint and seem to blow it off without much concern -- but rather offering excuses. They're nice enough. But unconcerned with service times. They're ready to give you excuses. I give this place a 2 star rating when the food and charm definitely warrant 4. The service is a 1, however. And good service can make or break a restaurant. read more

This place needs loads of improvement. One problem was our waitress was rude. My mother was not informed that she would be charged extra for substituting veggies for fries and when she politely asked about it when she saw our bill, the waitress said "If it's gonna be like that then..." Who does that? I have regretted not asking for her supervisor right then and there. In addition to that, we were made to wait 45 minutes for our food to be served. We only had water for that whole time and we were a large party with young children. It was quite an inconvenience. Additionally, my aunt received her main dish a soup and salad a full 20 minutes before anyone else got their food. This is the second bad experience I have had there, and the food is mediocre, so I'm not going back. read more

A very nice restaurant and super friendly staff. My dad and I decided to try it out and we were hungry! We started off with the fried green tomatoes. We couldn't finish them, you get a lot of tomatoes compared to other restaurants. We both ordered the crab cakes. Now I will say, I am at the beach so when I order a crab cake I am expecting lump crabmeat with very little filler. I mean you are on a barrier island surrounded by millions of blue crab. We were very disappointed with their crab cakes. The crab cakes were loaded with filler. Before the summer is over, I plan to stop back by and try another meal. We came in for lunch with a party of 6. We were seated immediately and ordered appetizers, the fried green tomatoes and the giant pretzel. Both of which were awesome. We ordered a salad, crabcake sandwich, crab quesadilla, fish tacos and 2 orders of shrimp tacos and everyone enjoyed their meal to the point that we wanted the waitress (Allie) to give the cook a high five for a job well done! I was very pleased with the level of COVID precautions that were taken. However, the food was a bit underwhelming. We went at 12:30 but they only had breakfast available (not sure if that is normal). My wife got the bananas foster pancakes, which were good but VERY sweet. The sausage gravy and potatoes were very tasty though. The staff was super kind and attentive. Although it took a VERY long time to get our food, the burger was still a bit raw in the middle. I don't understand how the restaurant could also have an A in cleanliness when there was a rat in the bathroom. The owner also seems to argue with the customers rather than trying to fix the restaurant itself. Never coming back. update: the owner assumed i was a part of a group who was rude and left a bad tip. We had a wonderful time here! This is a quaint little restaurant facing the beach. We sat inside since it was raining but there are a few picnic tables outside as well. Service was great and our waitress was quick and friendly. Sweet tea was awesome. The food took a little time to come but was well worth it! I had the beach road salad with chicken. I got balsamic dressing but also tried the house vinaigrette as well. Both were wonderful. The chicken breast was perfectly cooked and slightly warm so it didn't taste too hot on the cold salad. The chicken was juicy and had some italian seasoning. Delicious. The lettuce and veggies were fresh and crisp. Very refreshing salad after a hot beach day. My partner had a burger which he loved. It was cooked medium with a nice pink center. He said it was juicy and very flavorful and fresh. The chips were bagged lays which honestly didn't bother.
