Small restaurant that deserves a big welcome to the neighborhood. I wanted to try something different and Nana caught my eye. It took them longer than I expected to make two sandwiches, but I could understand that the pandemic has made everything more difficult. Gutsy move on the owners part to put the store in the Beechhurst section of Whitestone which doesn't have any Arabs or Israelis. But nonetheless this place is on fire and the community adores it!!! My wife got "the whole shebang falafel". We were excited to try the food because the reviews were so great. Everything was borderline mediocre/very bad. The pita was stale. The hummus/salads were just bad, probably the worst hummus I ever tried (I love hummus but not here). The eggplant dishes we got were also very slimy and did not taste fresh at all. The set up of the establishment looks kind of like a subway/deli where everything is premade in bulk and they just put it into Togo containers as orders come in. Falafel was honestly nothing special. Stopped coming here after the pandemic when the food quality plummeted and service was lacking. Responses to my complaints were met with poor excuses. Decided to try again today. Here is the miserable falafel. Small, flat, burnt and devoid of flavor. I ate one and the other four went in the trash. Such a disappointment especially since the prices increased dramatically. As a huge falafel fan, I was there for the grand opening and the falafel were so extraordinary, I told Josh it was the best I'd ever eaten. After that never saw him again and it was all downhill. I noticed quite a few reviews pertaining to inferior falafel. If there are other customers whom you claim LOVE your falafel, then your quality control is greatly lacking. read more

Great new addition to Whitestone Queens. This is an Isreali restaurant with kosher meat. Went with my kids and was satisfied by the quality and taste. The falafel were the favorite part of the meal. Kids were disappointed at first to hear that they ran out of rice, but they switched them out with fries so they were happy. The hummus, salad and pita were all great. What a great addition to the neighborhood! I generally need to trek closer to Jackson Heights or Elmhurst to find quality food (other than Chinese), so having a delicious falafel place nearby is awesome. And it is DELICIOUS. The falafels are fresh and herby, but when they get stuffed into the beautifully soft pita breads, they become something else. Mixed with fragrant pickles and salads, the falafel sandwich is probably the best vegetarian option in the area. Get extra pickles and you will be happy. The sabich sandwich is also delicious, with eggplant and the same pickles and salad as the falafel. There is a creamy tahini sauce that will have you happily blowing by your calorie goals for the day as you pour on another cup's worth, and a pink sauce that has a fresh, floral taste to it. Try some of both. Nana is definitely one of the best options around with easy parking, quick and delicious food, plentiful vegetarian options and reasonable prices. read more

The beef kebab was good not great - slightly tough and not enough flavor. The Moroccan cigars with meat were pretty good. The salads - eggplant, babaganoush and hummus were ok. Whitestone and Bayside area is usually Italian, Greek and Asian food. I am so glad, I found Nana. They have some exotic flavors. I generally like Middle eastern and Israeli food. Their salads are very flavorful. We ordered the platter for 4 with chicken and couscous. Platter comes with whole bunch of salads. It was more than enough for five of us in the family. When this place first opened up they were phenomenal. I've gone a few times since and the portions are definitely smaller each time. Today was the first time I visited since the fall. I paid $13 for a Shwarma hand held which, I already think that all of their menu items are overpriced by $2-3. When I used to come in the beginning, their handhelds were HEAVY I tell you, heavy! I couldn't even finish them, I had to have half or a third the next day. Today, I was very disappointed. Right when they handed me the bag I felt the weight and knew immediately. When I got home and took it out of the bag, I knew just from the looks that the price was a disappointment. The sandwich was LIGHT. If I had to put a number on it I'd say 30% lighter than when I used to get them. Lo and behold I was able to finish the entire thing in one sitting. It took me more than several bites to even get to the meat of the meal and there wasn't much chicken in there at all. After tax I paid $14.68. I'm sorry but what?!? That is not okay! If you're going to be charging that much you better be filling them up to the MAX like you used to or at least include a drink or a side with that kind of price. Seriously. Thats not cheap and I'm pretty sure they overcharge because its Whitestone so they think they can get away with it. The sandwiches are not worth the high end prices. Don't get me wrong the food is delicious, but NOT for the price.. and I understand that everything is homemade, but still. Maybe each staff member isn't making the sandwiches exactly the same and that might be something that has to be fixed. Another suggestion of mine would be to start offering half sandwiches for all the other items besides the falafel. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar (aka you'd prob have WAY more customers with this budget friendly option). You guys know how many high schoolers hang out right next door at Cascarinos which btw I never see go inside Nana's. What high schooler is going to drop $15 (after tax) on a sandwich (and thats if you're getting the cheapest one). I personally know of customers you guys have lost because of the same reasons I've mentioned. I didn't believe them because I always loved this place but really, I won't be paying $15 for a sandwich, no matter how homemade it is. Also just a tip, if they ask for your spicy level and you want mild, its still reallyyy spicy so ask for low or no spice at all. Another tip is the Shishlik handheld is way better than the Chicken Sharwma- in which the chicken tastes like indian curry style chicken. I also didn't taste any hummus on my Chicken Shwarma sandwich that they usually baste both insides of the pita with, but maybe that because it was a different sandwich. Also not to be rude but is there a need for like 10 staff members behind the counter? Lol I know I'm exaggerating but for such a small place, are that many hands required to run it? Lol. I apologize for the lengthy review but in a nutshell, I just 100% felt ripped off. Update in reply to owners response: For the half sandwich idea I am specifically referring to the other menu items besides the falafel, not sure if you missed that part. Falafel is the only option you have available right now for a half sandwich. Not everyone likes falafel (me), so it would be nice to see the other handhelds available as half. Also I'm not sure if you guys actually measure the handhelds on a scale when you're all done but I have a fantastic memory and explicitly remember the weight that these handhelds used to be and how much more to be exact, they used to fill up my stomach, versus nowadays. I also never customize anything and always get the traditional pitas which means the weight should be constant all across the board. I'm sorry, but unless some new half sandwiches are made available, $15-$18 for a sandwich is simply not affordable for the average college student/ working person and you're certainly limiting your customer base in that regard. If I'm paying that much I expect more food than what you're giving OR like I mentioned, a side or a drink. read more

I suggest avoiding this place on Friday's, they are are extremely busy which means they get orders wrong and wait times are slightly frustrating. As much as I'd love to support small businesses, this one doesn't get my vote. The food is below average. We got falafel and shawarma. Good qty for the price. Tried new items from the menu this time and, yup, still 5 star food. Only negative is i found with the food is it is salty. I drank 1.5 liters of water with my first meal and though it was me. After my second visit and meal i had from here, i drank about 1.5 liters of water with the meal bc if the saltiness. Specifically the falafel balls i think was the very salty item, but it is still really amazing food. I'd say just use a but less salt and it is perfected. Some of the flavors are like 'wow' i dont think ive ever tasted such amazing flavors combined. Will be back, hopefully the salt content is figured out, but even with that this place is five stars. Well I was on my way to my favorite supermarket aka North Shore Farms when I was pleasantly surprised to find this small, but great little takeout/ eat in Israeli spot.
