This place has some serious management issues with how they operate. After my eye exam I ordered two pairs of glasses, same prescription, because the reason for my visit in the first place was I had broken my only pair of regular glasses. I made a point to tell them this and that I couldn't see. I only had a pair of sunglasses from a few prescriptions ago, which is not at all ideal for daily wear. They said, on July 12 that they would be ready in about a week and a half which would have been around July 24. I never heard anything so I called them on that day to check and they said one pair had come in. Not sure when that happened or why they hadn't called me but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Now it has been 2 1/2 week, I still had not gotten a call about the second pair and so I call them again and they say they are ready. For being a company supposedly passionate about people's vision, they sure don't seem to be in a rush to get you to see properly. If I hadn't called, how much longer would it have been? I'm beyond disappointed and will be looking elsewhere for my eye exams and glasses in the future. read more

Overpriced, low quality. Because I knew this place was low quality, I decided to use them instead of my regular optical office because I was laid off from work and am saving my pennies. What I BIG mistake! This place ended up costing me MORE than the high-end optical office I went to last year where I got a $500 pair of designer frames, plus upgraded lenses--all for $407 total out of pocket after insurance. Well, at MyEyeDr. in Naperville, I bought a cheapo pair of frames (Under $200) and progressive lenses for a total out of pocket AFTER insurance of $561! I didn't realize it until I got home and looked more closely at my bill (I picked up my glasses near closing, so they were rushed to push me out, and I was rushed as well) that they did NOT include my insurance coverage on the lenses AND they overcharged me to boot! They had the insurance max LISTED on the invoice, but NEVER DEDUCTED IT FROM THE TOTAL AMOUNT!!! It's either outright thievery or incompetence--I honest am not sure which. To top if off, my prescription is wrong. (The guy who did my measurements was in such an all-fired hurry that he didn't even use the little hand-held machine. He said he didn't need it. NO, he DID; he was just too lazy to use it. Stay away. Far, far away. Typical chain that is not any better than any other place. read more

We had an excellent appointment this past Saturday. We had to bring our toddler and the staff was so patient and accomodating. Zaida was the technician that took care of us and did a great job of explaining all the steps and the reason behind each test. We will always go here and ordered our glasses through them. I received assistance picking a pair of glasses that best suited me, she had a great eye for colors and details, and was updated on the cause of the wait for them to arrive. I left a review in 2016. After stopping in today, I felt compelled to update it. I love going to this store. The people are so friendly and helpful. I needed a small fix to my glasses and they made it so easy. I've been shopping here for years and I've already got my next frames picked out. And one final thing worth mentioning is that I wear a set of progressives all the time now. I got my first pair from another place and the prescription was just wrong - I was about to give up wearing progressives until someone at MyEyeDr asked to just test them. The Spex staff is amazing! I've worn contacts for over 20 years, so I've had ALOT of eye exams and many different experiences with optical boutiques. This is the FIRST time my experience left me feeling all warm, fuzzy, and excited about returning next year. The front staff was very warm and welcoming. They offered me a drink while waiting, which is a nice, uncommon touch for an optical boutique. The pricing of their exam is higher than if you got to Lens Crafters or a similar place, but you get a much more thorough exam that includes additional tests. My doctor was awesome. Not only is she very friendly, but she is very knowledgeable. She took the time to patiently explain the different aspects of my exam and what each test shows her. I don't think an optometrist has ever done this for me. She also explained things that she would be looking for in the future to evaluate the health of my eyes. I left there with much more knowledge about my vision, my eye health, and contact care than I've ever received at eye exams at other optical boutiques I've visited. As far as their selection of eyewear, Spex doesn't have the largest selection I've seen, but it was large enough for me to find 5 frames that I loved and had a very hard time choosing between. Dr Rovenstine was wonderful. In 30+ years of wearing glasses I don't remember another doctor taking the time to ask me about my eyes, my vision, and my health, and make recommendations based on my eyes specifically. She was incredibly informative, so I felt comfortable asking questions I've had but never asked because other docs just don't seem that interested in talking to me beyond the basics. So disappointed not only does it take forever to get my boys contacts in now my son who broke his glasses isn't getting his glasses or contacts in time which they said they would be here before we left for vacation. My poor son has been wearing old glasses that hurt his eyes. Now I am suppose to take him on vacation without either. I could not be more upset!!! Spex was great. Its employees loved all things optical, they loved design and they'd talk to you about both for hours. It carried an eclectic range of high quality and distinctive frames such as you might only find in the city. And its signature color was a remarkable green. Then it was bought by MyEyeDr. I stopped in today to order some new glasses. Well over half the store was dominated by brands and styles that would fit well at Costco or Pearl Vision Center. "$99 complete package!," all with a homogeneous look. Then there were the "Spex Legacy" brands, a couple of the old brands as a sop to customers who care about quality and panache. The name shows how much MyEyeDr cares about quality; they might as well have been Spex Leftovers. Would it have been that difficult to name it Spex Style? The old staff seems pretty much gone too. I know in the optical world there's a lot of moving around, but Spex managed to keep its people pretty well, and they made the store great. By the way, the horrific but memorable Spex Green is gone, replaced by gray and brown. Lovely. read more

So I was at another Eyeglass store and visited their doctor in order to get my prescription. I didn't find any glasses I liked at that location so I have been ducking in and out of various eyeglass places that I've seen. Spex came up and I thought I'd give it a try to see if anything struck my fancy. I checked in on my trusty Yelp app and saw that people LOVE this place! As I walked in I could tell why. It was pristine and beautiful. The lady at the desk offered to help and I told her my situation she showed me some frames she thought I'd like. All the frames are expertly showcased and really pop. But holy pocketbook Batman!!! $295 for frames alone?!?!? (And that was the cheapest I found). If you are looking for expensive and trendy frames, by all means come here and spend 100 times more than you need to. I don't even want to know what the total bill would be with your lenses. I ended up buying elsewhere so I can't say much on their ordering process etc. People really seem to like this place on Yelp so far so they must be doing something right but I will spend my hard earned $$ elsewhere and enjoy the savings. read more

Spex and its staff are nothing shy of customer service perfection. As a first time reluctant eye glass wearer I was beyond hesitant in the purchase of my new prescription eyewear. I had the eye exam at the Geneva location but when I went to pick out frames I found none to my liking. They willingly ordered samples for me to try on with no avail. I live near a Spex in Naperville so they ( the Geneva location ) suggested I try them as styles change based on location. When I arrived at Naperville Spex ( Jennifer ) I believe, was just the kindest most helpful person ever. She picked out the frames I purchased on the first try. I never felt so comfortable making a purchase I was reluctant to get to begin with. I just picked them up today, and I love them. A sincere thank you to both locations. I purchased a high percription lenses for glasses I got elsewhere because they didn't have good styles for glasses. I had a headache with the glasses after wearing them longer than 2 hours on each day. Mostly I wear them at nights so I didn't notice daily. For my yearly checkup I went to another place because I was looking for a style of glasses that wouldn't be so heavy related to the style so I could wear them longer. they checked my glasses and told me that the stigmatism was not put in the glasses from myeyedr. I've always had a stigmatism. myeyedr did not give me the correct prescription. when I called them to remake the lenses they refused saying my glasses were not in warranty any more. I explained I wouldn't have know this was incorrect until the new placed checked them. myeyedr did not honor their incorrect perception. not only this the staff is very rude not only in this conversation but also when I purchased my lenses. read more

For me with my insurance this was a scham. I paid $185 x 3 for eye exams for three people. Typical fee is $85 each. I basically paid up front for the glasses and exams, My Eye Dr is not supposed to file with my insurance because I don't have any vision insurance, just a $110 credit per year. After going through several rigaramoos with my insurance, who admits they made a mistake sending the $330 to My Eye Dr, and My Eye Dr. who has the balls to tell me I still owe them $60. I can't recommend this place even a little, avoid it like the plague. read more

I started wearing glasses at a young age and at age 25 ever since I can remember I have been going to Spex. I have been going to the Grayslake, IL location up until the other day when I switched to your location in Naperville since I moved out here. I really enjoyed the great atmosphere and people within the Grayslake location that I felt like the Naperville location would bring that same warm, inviting, and pleasant feeling to it, which it most certainly did. Since switching locations, I was able to schedule an appointment right away and the service was excellent. I went in with the doctor I was able to talk to her as if I had always seen her. She was able to look at my chart that was created online at the other location and made the experience such a joy. To anyone who would like that personal touch in their contact and glasses care then I highly recommend Spex. read more

I went into today as a new patient to see Dr. Sharon Rovenstine for an eye exam and reading glasses. The entire staff was amazing. Dr. Rovenstine was so patient and kind. She explained everything throughly and was just incredible. The lady who checked me in was very friendly. The man who helped me get fitted with/ pick out frames (Malav) was my absolute favorite. He was extremely helpful and even broke down the entire bill so I could understand exactly what I was paying for. He even called my insurance to make sure what I was getting was covered. Yes, it was a little pricey. No, I don't mind paying more for quality patient care. Your total bill also depends a lot on your insurance coverage, so I don't think they're completely at fault when someone's bill is high. My family and I will definitely be going back. read more

I called in the last days of 2017 to get an appointment for an exam and to reorder contact lenses to use my insurance benefit. WIth less than 48 hours to go, they gave me an appt. When I arrived I was seen right on time and although my prescription hadn't really changed, the Dr. raised the bar to incrementally enhance the Rx. We discussed future plans for considering progressive lenses. She wasn't pushy and even though it was the first time I'd been there the attention she took and her friendly approach made me very confident in my decision to go there. I was well taken care of. The assistant that rung me up also looked up a pair of frames I had been checking out and priced them for my insurance for the next year and they were super affordable so Ii"ll be back soon! Also, their prices for the same contacts I purchased from another local optometrist cost much less. read more

Edited on 02/06/19 - I spoke with corporate customer service today about my experience, and mysteriously 3 hours later I received a call from the Naperville office. This was the first communication I had heard from them since they informed me my glasses were made incorrectly and I cancelled my order from them. They did not respond to my email with my refund information (not even a "we received this and will be sending out the check on x date"), they did not reach out to see if I had ever received my refund, nothing. When I spoke with the office manager, she once again, tried to cover her tracks by saying she had reached out to me during the ordeal - yes, but only one time, after I had made over 10 calls to various offices to try to find my glasses and get some sort of update, and only when I had repeatedly asked to speak to a manager at the Naperville office and my glasses were made incorrectly. There was no follow up on their end, which further cements the horrible customer service that was given by the office. Not only that, but after this whole ordeal, my glasses taking 1.5 months, losing hours visiting various offices and tracking down my expensive purchase, she offered me "free adjustments" to my glasses at her store. No thank you. I will never be returning, and because your store caused so many issues, I actually had to order a MORE expensive pair of glasses so that I could get them in a reasonable time and to DC. On a positive note, the corporate office was great. If only I could have gone to them to get my glasses. read more

What a great location! I left with a smile on my face as the entire experience was just the perfect mixture of professionalism and friendliness. Dr. Ashley was great and explained what all my tests/imaging meant. Seriously, I've never had an optometrist do that for me so that was such a treat! I chose to try some new frames on and Jennifer, the manager, helped me through the selection process. Somebody give this woman a raise! She sure knows her stuff and was able to be objective about how the frames looked on my face (e.g. she assessed my facial structure versus the angle of the frames I tried on), so I really appreciated that she wasn't just trying to sell me any set of frames. Plus, another first, because as far back as I can remember I never really had anyone truly help me decide which frames to go home with. So A++. I've been to the downtown location, but was glad to have one here in the Far Western burbs! Manager Jennifer is a joy to work with and a complete pro. Excellent assistance in helping select new frames, seamless work with my insurance, and they came in much faster than I expected! My handcrafted glasses are a wonky RX which were handled perfectly and adjustments after purchase are made quickly and graciously. I have 2 pair from Spex and cannot recommend them highly enough! Bonus? SOOOO many complements on my new frames! Worth every penny for service, quality, and knowledge. Spex rules! read more

A few weeks ago I was having problems with my legacy frames that I've had for years and years. I really, really like these frames and have gone out of my way to take care of them and even have collected some spare parts for them over the years. These frames have long been discontinued and I haven't been able to find a'suitable replacement frame at any eyeglass shop, so I've simply held off on replacing the frame and crossed my fingers for years and years. I treat my glasses like a precious heirloom, ha! Anyhow, the right arm on my frame was kind of bent or something, so I took my glasses and replacement parts into Spex (just to be clear these frames weren't originally purchased at Spex) in the hopes that they could fix up my glasses somehow. I spoke with Max there and he felt fairly sure he could take care of the job, so I gave him the proper replacement part and my glasses and he went to the back for about 5 minutes. He came back up front and the frames were as good as new without Max having to even use the replacement part I brought. I was quite surprised and obviously happy that these frames were back in business. When I asked him how much I owed him for his service, but he politely declined and just said to keep them in mind when I was ready to replace my legacy pair. Fair enough! I thought this was really friendly and great service. And while Max was working on my frames I did browse their frame selection they had and they do have a great selection of mostly fashionable, higher-end frames, although I didn't see any prices on their frames. So if you're looking for eyeglass frames or even need service on an existing pair, give Spex a look. read more

Spex is AWESOME! Max and Jen are so helpful, knowledgeable and gave honest opinions on what frames would work for me. They are very patient - I take forever to make decisions! I even found a frame online that I liked and they were able to locate it and get it shipped to the store for me to try on (and it wasn't even the one I purchased). They really go above and beyond to provide an excellent customer experience. I don't think I'll get glasses anywhere else from now on. I absolutely love my new frames. They are unique, really nice quality and the lenses are extremely well crafted. I have very poor vision which results in very thick lenses, but the lenses in my new frames are probably the thinnest I've ever had. The glasses are also about the least expensive I've gotten and the best quality! Total win-win. The added bonus about Spex - they are DOG FRIENDLY! While I was trying to make a decision on frames, I took my puppy in a couple of times - which is so cool! Definitely the best experience I've had and I tell people about Spex all of the time. The staff was awesome. The doctor was great...very professional and knowledgeable. The equipment they used was clean and in good repair. They have lots of trendy stylish frames to choose from. If you are looking for colorful frames or frames with round, cat-eye or other funky shaped lenses, they have many to choose from. If you are looking for cheap frames, this is not the place. The frames ranged from $200 to $600 dollars. I am not a real trendy person so I wasn't able to find glasses I liked. Also, I only wear my glasses at night and on rare occasions so I couldn't justify spending that much. I did order contacts, though, and they were priced about average. I did not feel pressured and when I asked for my glasses prescription to be written so I could go elsewhere to get cheap frames they were very nice and quickly obliged. read more

I have been a long time patient at Spex - Max and the staff were excellent for years. I recently scheduled an appointment for my 5 year old. I specifically told them that it was my child's first appointment ever at an eye doctor. They assured me that they had experience in doing the required state of IL exam for kindergarteners, a standard eye exam! First, when I got there...I noticed that they are not SPEX anymore, their name changed now to My Eye Dr... Anyway, they took my child in. They talk to a 5 year old child like she/he was an adult and knew what was happening!!! No skills I treat children patients whatsoever! We went in together and tried to help the assistant with part of the many tests that they put them through in order to make a full eye exam. Well that part (first test - with assistant) did not go well... Next the optometrist (in my opinion was bias as the assistant might have warned her that the child was not cooperating!) called my child in and had a bit of an attitude... The optometrist, warned me that I might have to help with the exam as my child was not cooperating!!! I agreed... through the entire process I was talking to my child constantly saying "please listen to the doctor, mommy is here with you (in the doctor's presence!) ...!" The optometrist had the nerve to ask me if I was his GRANDMA!!!! (Yes, I know I have some gray hairs but I am not grandma material yet!!) That might have push the situation a bit too far... but what did it was the fact that the doctor lost her patience... and said "well... I can't spend more time like this... (note: we were within the 30 minute allowed time per patient!) I have a lot of patients waiting for an exam and can spend more time...". !!!!!!!!! That was it! I interrupted her and asked her why they did not tell me that they are not to familiar or do not have a lot of children as patients, instead of wasted my time and their time. I did not have a good experience or professional treatment from this optic!!! As a matter of fact it has been the WORSE experience I have ever had in an Optical place. I am sure that we wouldn't have had this experience with the former SPEX staff. Max and his staff were absolutely customer service oriented and experts on this. I am sorry that this NEW optical business (MyEyeDr) doesn't reflect the warm, professional, respectful feeling that the previous management work so hard for... it doesn't even reflect what the Naperville community is all about!! BAD BAD EXPERIENCE... I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND this optical business if you are looking for glasses or a plain and simple standard exam for children between 5-8 years of age! read more

If you looking to have a bad experience, waste your time and then try to get overcharged on your purchase....this is the place for you. The customer service here was excellent - from being offered a beverage to assistance with selecting my new frames, even sorting out an insurance issue - and I would highly recommend this location to friends and family. I'm so sad to update this review. I LOVED this place when it was Spex. The staff was wonderful and I bought cool frames by a french designer that no one else carried. I liked that they carried a unique assortment of glasses. After My Eye Dr. took over they changed the inventory to the same stuff you see at Lenscrafters and Pearle. I mean, why bother. Plus their prices are obscene. I placed an order and after my insurance they were still five hundred dollars. I looked up the frame and the mark up was extremely high. I can understand paying more for good customer service and supporting small business but this was robbery. I cancelled my order. Oh and they said something wasn't covered on my insurance and charged me for it. It was covered. So, check your bill closely if you buy here. read more

I had an eye exam and got a new pair of glasses this year. The eye exam took almost 3 hours which is the longest time I ever had before. After two weeks to get the new pair, I start wearing the new glasses which gives me the burry vision when doing the reading and makes my eyes tired so easily. So I have to switch to my old glasses. The lens I got from Spex are the best I ever have (i have wear glasses for more 20 years). Nikki and Jen are very friendly and helpful. If you really care about your eyes, you should definitely go there. They would spend your lens back to the labs and restart a new one if they didn't past their inspection.
