I eschew big box stores preferring to shop small and local. The workers at Ace are friendly and helpful. I almost always find what I am looking for and their selection of plants in the spring is fantastic. I like shopping online and being able to come in and pick up my order when ready. While admittedly more expensive than big home improvement stores, I find it worthwhile to do business with people who feel like neighbors to me. read more

I needed to have a fence painted. I contacted them. Their first response, sure we can start tomorrow. So I ask how much and time frame. There was a concern about a working outside faucet but that got resolved. Never heard back after going back and forth for several days, yes DAYS. So I left one last message and they called me. I called them back and could not understand a word the person was saying to me as it was on a 4 or 5 second delay. A week later and still haven't heard back from them. Most everyone at this pharmacy seems very hardworking but there is one recurring problem. There are three young men that typically work the front counter. They can be very careless. It's a recurring issue that the store manager or the head of pharmacy needs to address. On countless occasions when I come in to fill a prescription I'm told that the particular medication is out of stock. Of course that's not their fault. But I'm told they will order it and I can come back in a week to pick it up. When I come i'm told it was never order but they will order this time. Now that IS their fault! Today it happened again. The young lady told me that whoever promised to order it never did. She said she would reorder it now I said I will wait to be sure it is ordered this time. I understand mistakes happen but this happens repeatedly. Like most drug insurance you need to be within 5 days of depleting your last supply before they will approve a refill. If I have to wait to come in to refill with just 5 days remaining until I run out and they tell me they will reorder and then they tell me to come back in a week but then they forgot to order it, you have a problem because you've exhausted your medication during the 5 days waiting for the refill. Now you need to wait another week so you miss your upcoming doses. Asking for an emergency supply doesn't work because they are out of stock. Please talk to these young men about this. read more

I had to get a key made for an old bolt lock. I go to the key desk and ring the bell. After waiting 5-10mins for someone to come I decided to go behind the desk and look at the keys on the wall to see if I could find a key to match. I found a key that was the exact same as my key just a different color. Shortly after going behind the desk a younger guy comes out. I gave him the spiel and he put the key in the automated machine. To my surprise, it recommended a different key than the one I found. I explained the key I found was an exact match, but he didn't bother looking at it and just said the machine suggested this key so he'll make that key. I said fine and confirmed with him that I could return it if it didn't work. The key was cut and of course didn't look anything like the original, so I wasn't surprised when it didn't work. I go back another day and a lady stocking the screws and bolts area came over right way. Her name was either Sue or Beth. I gave her the spiel and she was very helpful. Her coworker came to make the key using the manual cutter. They used the key I found before and agreed that it was a perfect or almost perfect match. The key was cut, looked perfect and worked perfectly. That lady was great and actually took the time to listen and help us. The 4 stars are because of her. read more

Came in got a key made for my truck, Ace's key re-programming killed the electrical in my truck (or de programmed the keys). Positive - Ace agreed to pay for the towing/repair and reimburse me for my rental car +additional $150 to reprogram the 2nd key when I dig it off my work bench. Cons - The only reason anything got taken care of was my constant follow-up with Ace add to it the lack of care/empathy by the store made this a total negative experience. I tried to avoid the big box stores and shop here, but overall this is a big box store mentality and service with higher prices and limited inventory. Mutual Ace is located on Northwest Highway in Palatine. It is not only a convenient location and you may even pass it to get to the bigger hardware type stores. Don't pass it up!! Most of the time you will find what you are looking for , without the hassle of the big congested similar stores. Plenty of parking, clean and organized, and the best part; amazing staff. I have ALWAYS been treated kindly and assisted quickly in finding what I was looking for. Today I had the pleasure of meeting Abigail in the outdoor garden area. Cheerful, knowledgeable and eager to be of assistance. She greeted every customer enthusiastically and was going out of her way to bring them carts to accommodate their plants. Based on two visits. One in late July and one yesterday. In late July I bought a Weber propane grill at this location. I liked that a sales associate came over to see if I needed help after letting me look at the grills for a few minutes myself. They're not hounds like the sales people at car dealerships stalking you the moment you walk in the door. The associate was very nice and didn't try to up sell me. I knew what I wanted and I wanted it delivered fast and done right. Checking out was easy aside from the register being a bit wonky but we sorted it out by using a different register. Irony of it all is the register was fine and it was my credit cards anti fraud lock tripping up. Why I didn't get a text from my bank, not sure, but my finger points at my bank for that blunder. Alas after I sorted out the anti fraud mechanism the transaction went right through and I was on my way home. The next day a box truck clearly marked with the stores name and appealing graphics showed up with my grill in the back already assembled. They placed it on my deck for me and showed me how to do the first ignition. The delivery process was very fast. I liked that they came in a branded truck that was easy to identify and looked good on the curb. Yesterday we needed to get a new mailbox so we went to Ace, the associates were very helpful in telling me where they were in the store and didn't hassle me when I decided not to buy a mailbox there. Their selection was rather limited on mailboxes and I'm not surprised, it's a hardware store, not a mailbox store. While I cannot retrace specific times I can tell you this store has been a great resource near my house for getting keys duplicated and finding odd screws that I need. It's nice to have the helpful place just up the road and around the corner. I will always prefer a local hardware store to a big box hardware store. It's easier to get around and they tend to carry more of what you actually need than having rows and rows of aisles with stuff that only a contractor would ever buy. Though the ownership has changed the employees have not, same helpful and enjoyable people to do business with. read more

This is an updated Ace Hardware review. I am still an Ace fan after many years. This year I found out Ace sharpens EGO electric mower blades! I was kind of stressed about the mower blade being dull... And, of course I stop in a couple times a year to find the latest little obscure screw that fell into a black hole never to be found again.... I like it that I can have my list of 5 things and be in and out the door pretty quickly, and have always been able to have my questions answered. read more

Ace i the place... I prefer to shop here over big box stores... The people are genuinely helpful and actually will stop to talk to you about your project to get you the right parts the first time... Do I shop at big box hardware stores... yes Do I try to go to Ace first, ALL THE TIME. Ace has most things, are priced competitively, and unlike Big Box Stores, they will walk you to where you need to be. and talk through your project to make sure you have everything you need to be successful, the first time. Shopping at Ace always saves me 1 or 2 trips back because I forgot something that i didn't know i needed or sometimes that it even existed. And I save time in the store because I don't have to guess where in isle 12, 1/2 inch nylon barb 90 degree connectors are, because they take you right to it. In Short, Ace is like shopping with your buddy that does home improvement projects all the time and can tell you in a non-condescending was what you really need. As an added bonus, the old guy who cuts keys is nice to talk to. On a little aside, I went to Ace to fix a plumbing issue, not only did they help me with the project, but when they didn't have a part that I needed, they were genuine sorry that they didn't have it. I think that is called caring about your customer, but it is so rare in other stores that it just feels nice. Go in there for your next project, they will treat you like a human being. After resolving my mistake we had a great conversation about the project I'm working on and he was very supportive and helpful. I asked how to seal a skateboard and his response was great! He said I love you kids (I'm 36) with your projects. We commiserated that we are both too old to take up skateboarding. He nailed the perfect spray can that I needed to seal these boards. Well ace in palatine is probably the worst when it comes to that... a transaction that was supposed to be an easy price adjustment turned out to take FOREVER and a few different trips.... i asked if they could put the price difference in a gift card/store credit and apparently they don't have such thing?! Okay... I told the employee I did not have the card it was purchased it so first I was told that any card would work once I brought in a card of mine I was told that the card on the purchase had to match and I was accused of "trying to commit fraud" for trying to use a different card... okay that's not the worst part. one of my items didn't have the package and the employee said "how do I know it wasn't from her tool box?! Well its on the receipt and I was NOT returning it. I wanted a price adjustment. HUGE waste of my time for going back and forth. Lastly I went back with the same card I had used originally and Donna was able to help me and was very apologetic as she had overheard the story and really wanted to take care of me in the first place but didn't want to step over whoever the employee helping me was. read more

Why can't all stores have customer service like Ace in Palatine? I am clueless when it comes to anything home/lawn related so I can always count on any of the workers at Ace to help me out. They all are very knowledgeable, helpful and super friendly. They never rush me and want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I leave. They give you honest opinions on the products and they don't make you get the most expensive items if it's not necessary. Today's visit was another example of a worker going above and beyond. I needed one of those cardboard inserts for lawn bags but ACE was out (it's almost December so totally understandable). They had something but not exactly what I needed; and she totally understood. She went back in the stockroom and found a tall rolled cardboard piece from a discarded box; said to try this and it was free of charge since they were going to throw it away. It worked perfect! This is why I come here for all my home/lawn needs; so rare to find such consistent customer service like this today! read more

I actually enjoy Ace Hardware over the bigger stores. It's like going to Mr. Rodgers hardware store. Surprisingly they have a lot of the smaller stuff here that you can't find at Home Depot. I've been to Home Depot several times when they didn't have an item I was looking for & they told me to check out Ace Hardware. Shopping at an Ace Hardware is old school & that's probably why I enjoy it so much. It seems like a place where the employees would remember your name & they all know exactly where each item is. At Home Depot you have to go to so many different departments & deal with so many employees to find exactly what it is that you're looking for. The employees here are all very nice. They don't seem to mind helping you. A lot of other places act like you are bothering them when you ask for help. This Ace Hardware felt, looked and smelled like every Ace I can remember. The team members range from geeky teen with newly-found facial hair to retired guys with fingers the size of sausages. I don't know how that adds to the review but an observation. I came to have some keys copied. The man had no patience for my casual questions and seemed irritated that I didn't know what I want in my style of copied key (who knew there were so many options?). They were incredibly fast and the keys work (most important part). Ace has a bit of everything, so there's much to look at while you wait. It's a nice store. I bought a can of spray paint here on a Sunday which was on sale. When I got home I discovered I got the wrong type. I went back the next day to exchange it, with the receipt and bag. I was charged full price instead of them just exchanging it outright because it wasn't on sale that day. The cashier was an old grouchy lady who actually raised her voice at me when I asked why we couldn't just do an even exchange. Good customer service and a store who would want repeat business would have done so. They are also high priced on most of their items. I'll avoid shopping here in the future! read more

I'm by no means a hardware store expert, but I AM a customer service expert. This morning the remote for my 2012 SUV stopped working, setting off my alarm and leaving me unable to stop it. Neighbor said its likely the remote battery, but it's Sunday and Ford is closed. Hmmm - said to try Ace Hardware, where I've never stepped foot in my life. Looked it up, drove over, and the guy at the key counter tested my battery and said it was strong. Now what?? I was afraid to turn my car off again, and figured I'd have to hang home and wait to go to Ford in the morning. He opened it up, checked every connection, then used a pencil eraser to clean the tarnish off the connections. Voila! It works! Talk about over and above- and didn't cost me a cent. I thought I heard someone call him Chris but not sure. Thank you Ace -going to pick up my daughter and enjoy our day as planned thanks to you. read more

We had brought a snowblower in for repairs before the store closed. I had spoken w the company and authorized repairs. I called many times to be told the item wasn't there and referred to Wauconda or Lincolnshire. The store closed and there was no resolution to locating this item. I spoke to Jim , who honestly had no clue about this item. I was told my phone number was crossed off and multiple messages were left on a crossed off number. Makes no sense. I finally located it at the Palatine location where it was originally brought. I was told no repairs were done and to pick it up. Which, I immediately did. Later the same day I got a call saying it was repaired. I called constantly to get this item, as the past winter we had a lot of snow. Only , to no avail. I shoveled as best as I could, resulting in herniated discs. I was told by Jim he would charge me $300. Storage on an item he told me wasn't there nor repaired. Then, he found it and I was later told it was miraculously repaired. Go to Home Depot. More professional and they actually know what they are doing. Jim also released personal info to me on a past employee. Ridiculous. Where is the relevancy there? This Ace Hardware is not managed properly. I hope the owner sees this and understands how poorly his store is being run. I give them zero stars. I have been shopping there since I can remember. But, won't ever be back nor recommend. Too bad. It would be nice to support a local owned Ace. But, not worth the stupidity. read more

Just purchased a fixer-upper condo in the area, and boy did I need the help! Prices are competitive with the big box in the area, and the staff is top-notch, a question, suggestions, and available to help. Maybe its me but I really enjoy the friendly older cashiers, and I never have to look far to find someone to assist. I have been in this store at least 20 times in the last 6 months easily. Very happy with the selection, the helpful attitudes, and yes even the prices. I have purchased paint, supplies, hardware, tools, plumbing items, electrical items, chemicals, and always like checking out the closeouts for treasures, lol. But the service & advice is well worth spending the extra. I will happily spend more at a local family owned & operated place vs a big box corporately owned. After two failed attempts at big box home centers, I decided to give a traditional hardware store a try. In short two home centers failed to cut a simple roll up shade to the proper length, were it was apparent that their "associate" didn't understand a bracket-to-bracket measurement (e.g. replacement for an existing shade). Ace quickly cut the shade to the proper length and it fits properly in place of the old shade. Good job. read more

About a month ago I purchased two pink canopy children's chairs on line from Ace. I picked them up a couple days later, curbside. The process itself was easy, when I arrived the clerk brought the chairs out to my car. However, the chairs were not wrapped or in boxes, just in similar clothed cases. When we opened them a bunch of birdseed came flying out like they had either been stored somewhere animals fed or someone had used them and put them away like this. They were damaged, ripped and looked used. It was a few days after I had picked them up, and during Covid, so I wrote a letter and sent a copy of my invoice and pictures of the damage to the manager. I also like to give business to independent/local places but this one has me rethinking that practice. I needed a small electrical adapter. One of the red-vests (older guy not a high schooler) helped me locate it. Sign said $3.49, probably double the cost of same at Menards or HD but OK, fine. This particular item is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, which is an important detail to keep in mind if you read on.... Well as it were I can't resist the temptation to walk around and look at all the other junk, never knowing what you'll find on sale or what will catch your eye as a "must have". I've bought some of my most essential hardware/tools this way. So off I go, digging through the bin of cheap Chinese tools (they're OK for magnets and the like) and perusing the aisles, being the chronic tool shopper that I am. I have been wanting a new full set of hex bit sockets, and since they carry Craftsman I looked at what they had. WOW! At least 50% higher than Sears (the 7 pc set is about $20 at Sears, it was $31.99 there). They aren't even USA made. No thanks. Anyways... It didn't take long for me to realize that the man who had helped me find this electrical adapter seemed to be everywhere I went. EVERYWHERE. I'd be in an aisle, he'd come down the aisle. Then he'd turn the corner and double back on me again. This happened over and over. He was lingering, lurking, not asking me if I needed more help, just sort of "there". Then it dawned on me: he thinks I'm gonna shoplift his crappy little overpriced adapter! Don't know why he decided I was gonna rip him off the $3.50 - nothing about me would convey that impression I'd like to believe - yet it was quite obvious this was his thinking. He was eyeing my hand each time, covertly he must have thought in self-adulation, to see if I had slipped it in my jacket pocket. He was shadowing me, trying to be sly about it but failing miserably. I felt like handing him the trinket back and telling him to kiss my a##. Alas, I didn't, but instead made my way to checkout where I encountered an indifferent and unfriendly little old lady who must be retired from the DMV or something (it takes a career of practice to develop such unpleasant customer service skills). My adapter rang up $4.49, $1 more than the shelf price. I mentioned it to her and she scoffed, letting out a indiscernable grumble and a harumpf and depriving me of the courtesy of a verbal reply. But I read *her* mind too; "I'm not interested in your petty price discrepency, nor is it worth the energy it would take for me to investigate your assertion. Like it or lump it." I paid the $5 because I wanted the adapter and off I went, never to return again. Fortunately for me this is NOT the Ace closest to my house, we just happen to be in this strip mall from time to time as we come to the area on other business. Our Ace is much better. Plus we have a newer Tru-Value half a mile from us which I use all the time. This place get an extra star for having an OK selection. Otherwise it's about the worst Ace in the area. read more

I came here on Tuesday March 29th around 10:30am for a return that I wasn't sure would go through as I had misplaced the receipt and the item was defective. The young woman at the check out did not judge my awkward request and promptly called for a manager on her lapel walkie-talkie. Almost instantly I had a manager in front of me and I explained my situation. He listened carefully to my request and found a solution for my return item. The young woman at the checkout then found the item in the system that was purchased a year ago and processed my return. There was no hassle and both employees had professional attitudes. It's friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient employees like this that keep brick and mortar stores in business when considering the alternative value available online these days. Thank you. read more

Service is a dying breed. I went there today with a bad back-up sump pump battery that is approx. 3-4 years old. The staff had worked with the manufacturer before so they called the manufacturer to see what my options were for a replacement as opposed to just selling me a new one (which are expensive). They load tested the battery and let me borrow a battery charger for a couple of days to see if the battery could be charged and reinserted as opposed to replaced. I can't imagine getting this level of service anywhere else. Nicely done Ace Hardware Palatine! read more
