Since True Value is a franchise, every one of them has its own experience. This is a fairly small one but is packed with merchandise. When I need something quickly, this True Value is also the closest hardware store to my home. Certainly, when you compare a small franchise to a big box hardware store, you can't beat the variety of products in the big box or the prices, so I admit, I tend to go to a larger store when I need more stuff. This time I needed one screw and some duck tape. They have a small staff but there is always someone there to greet you and ask if you need any help. Funny how some of us get in hardware stores - we know what we need and don't really want anyone to help us. What the heck, I don't know much about screws and didn't want to pick the wrong one so I accepted. Within a few minutes, we had what I needed. Then, I asked where I could find the waterproof tape. This time he said aisle 17 and didn't come with me. Funny, I could have figured out the screw but I stood there looking at dozens of kinds of tape with very few saying waterproof or water-resistant. That is where I think I really needed help. After several minutes of standing like a deer in the headlights, I found one that says it worked underwater. Probably overkill but I did get it. I do like supporting local businesses. While it would have been less expensive at a larger store, those two items didn't cost a lot at all. Adding gas for my car would have been about the same because of the long drive. While I don't think this will be my go-to when I have larger projects I'm working on, for everyday hardware items, they are great. They also have tools, outdoor things, Christmas trees, fire pits, grills, etc., so they do offer things you may not want to drive farther for. I will never go back there. Until 5 Aug 23 I had been shopping at Palatine True Value because it is the closest hardware store to my home, they carry a lot of inventory in stock for the kinds of things I do around the house and their employees emphasize that the store is locally owned. I continued to patronize the establishment despite a few previous bad experiences with their rental equipment. Their prices aren't competitive but I looked past that because I felt like I was helping a small business survive in the world of big stores like Lowe's and Home Depot and Amazon but then Saturday 5 Aug happened. On that day, I asked the store manager if they would make key duplicates of a car key I had, using key blanks I bought on line. The manager said their store policy is to not make key duplicates using customer provided key blanks under any circumstances. It was Saturday and I wanted to get these keys taken care of and my usual key place (Henning Brother on NW Highway) is only open Mon-Fri, so I figured the folks at True Value could help me and if their policy didn't allow it, my 15 years of loyalty might allow for a waiver in policy if I could make them whole on the revenue. I suggested various possible compromises that could make up for them not getting to sell me the key blank as part of the effort, but options like paying them the profit for a key blank I wasn't buying and paying for the labor to cut the keys with profit on the labor were all rejected. The store manager stood by his position that the only thing they would do is sell me key duplicates made using their blanks for $75 a copy, and that a waiver to policy was within his authority to grant but he wouldn't consider granting one under any circumstance. On Monday, 7 Aug 23 the nice locksmiths at Henning Brothers on NW Highway, made the duplicates I needed using the blanks I gave them for $8 total. There are better locally owned hardware stores in Palatine that have a wider inventory of hardware in stock if you want to shop local, like Ace Hardware on NW Highway. Lowe's on Golf Rd and Home Depot on Dundee have everything and better hours than this place. Amazon is also a viable low price option for most of what this place sells at inflated prices. read more

We have frequented this store since it opened. The knowledge of the staff at this locally owned True Value is wonderful. We often go in troubleshooting a problem, and they help us find a suitable solution. The staff is friendly and respectful and you just feel like you're going into a small town hardware store chock full of interesting and practical merchandise. Sure, their prices may be higher, but not by much on most items. And some may not like certain store policies, but they are a small business and don't have the corporate pockets, which I sometimes may not like but can certainly appreciate. read more

I have been shopping here for years. It is good to see they have lots merchandises and the staff memebers are knowledgeable on any diy projects that I am working on. Don't be hesitant in asking for help on what you are doing and not just the products you are buying. As far as the returns that some of the reviewers are complaining about, as long as I have the receipt, no issues but make sure you have the proof. DO NOT SHOP HERE. First the prices are 20% higher that online dealers, Home Depot, Menards, or Lowe's. i was a loyal customer for 15+ years and never made a return. I purchased a handheld conduit bender and they did not have a handle. I went to return and they said all tool sales are final. I explained why how when it was bought they were out of handles and I needed to purchase another one at a different store. The manager Alicia was extremely rude and said she didn't care that I was a customer for over 15 years with not one return. She would not accept a store credit and it took 4 asks to get her name. 12/2020 Stopped in on a chance the other day. Found a few items my wife was looking for. The staff is very helpful. Keep up the great work team! 2017 I still hit the big box stores for most of my items. But in a pinch I stop in, and they always have what I need. A little more expensive than the big box, but sometimes that is worth it. Love the free popcorn too when I stop in. The staff is pretty helpful. So my experience with the True Value on Euclid First, I walked in was asking for help/info for a painting project, and the little boys working there that were unable to articulate, but giving me a lot of Ummms and welllls but no actual help. So I asked for a manager. Then the manager came out and I was asking for help and specific questions about my project... And his response was well you have a good better and best so it all depends on what you want. I tried to explain to him that I didn't know what I wanted and that's why I was asking for help on what he would recommend... His response was again well you have good better or best... So I said thank you and he walked away I then called my mother and was asking my stepfather for advice and I said there's too many options with absolutely no help I should've went to Home Depot. The guy then started yelling at me telling me to take my ass to Home Depot and that he's the owner and I'm not welcome there he's not taking my money and to get the hell out of his store... Absolutely the worst customer service I have ever seen in a home improvement/supply store. I cannot believe that they are still in business and I hope for the sake of the community this guy is out of business soon he has absolutely no idea about customer service or training employees or even training him self on how to interact with people on a daily basis that are looking for help. I needed a 1/4" bit holder for my drill. I am a tradesman and I probably have a half a dozen laying around but couldn't find any. So I pick up a pack of 2 here for around $15. I get them home and they are absolute garbage. The magnet is non existent..the screws won't stay on the bit...just horrible. You literally have to hold the screw to the wood/drywall! I clip the receipt to the pack for a refund and go to Lowe's as I needed other materials. When I went to return it...the young lady tells me that "That there's no returns on tools." I asked how that can be?..she says..."All sales final on tools." So I ask where does it say that. She then points to my receipt. Yes...my receipt that I got AFTER I bought it. Seemed pretty shady. So if the tool you bought Is defective or just doesn't work ...you are out of luck and they don't care. So I am out $15 ..which is really not the issue..or a big deal. I am also out the 15 minutes it took to give them a 1 star review. I am hopeful this review costs them way more. read more

I'm not changing my mind about their willingness to help but that's by far the extent of the praises they deserve. I know that when I go there it's out of convenience because they're 2 blocks away versus 5 miles like the big home improvement stores, so I expect to pay a little more. But I do expect to get what I paid for. Today I just needed some yard waste bags, 5 for about $4 after tax. Yes it's expensive but burning a gallon of gas and about half an hour to save $2 didn't seem worth it to me. I get home with the bags, start mowing the lawn, and when I reach for the 4th bag I realize that there were no more. THEY RIPPED ME OFF! I was able to force the rest of the clippings into the 4 bags out of pure anger. This event made me look at the receipt from the previous weekend when I needed washer supply lines. The charged me $30 for 2 hoses that I just found out sell for half that online and at every single WALMART, HOME DEPOT, LOWES, MENARD'S, TARGET, you name it. An archaic business model. The customer must bend to their rules. Couldn't work with them to buy a $6 item with a $10 gift card and walk out with $4 store credit. I actually had to leave the item behind and they were totally fine with not making the sale. I drove to Home Depot on Dundee and got the item cheaper anyway. The same shims are three times the price. Everything is way more expensive. Hours are limited. I've been burned twice too often trying to stop here for some little thing I need. Usually end up at lowes, menards or HD anyway... Or a specialty supply store. I wanted to like them and support a local business, but really they are just a chain like the others, only worse at it. I've tried. They haven't. read more

This is an outstanding hardware store. For such a small hardware store they have a very good selection across the board. It is very convenient. I have been coming here since it first opened. The service is great as well as the people there. Many times I have gone there to resolve an issue or to come up with a solution to a problem. They have never failed me. Because it is close and convenient, I am able to get items right away. The prices are fair considering it's convenience and smaller stock (than the big stores). I can always count on getting help at True Value. I can't always do that with the big hardware stores. And, I cannot see, feel, touch or ask someone a question about the product at Amazon. Worst place to ever shop I bought a dolly a few hours ago that doesn't work and barely roll and they said they couldn't return it despite not being used!!! Tried picking up something with it and would not roll with weight applied! Refreshing to see that the mom and pop type stores have not all disappeared! This store seems to have it all, even some things you'd never think they would, such as a self service copier, a few toys, nail grooming items, etc. Free popcorn made in the side...nice touch. No Negatives and I'm hard to please I rented a very heavy "Rooter Router" machine. Yes I had read some negative Yelp comments so I entered the store as an informed customer. My buyer experience was absolutely positive. But then I wasn't trying to return an item that was not bought there, nor did I ignore the " Terms of Sale" for gas powered tools and machinery. The manager and assistant carefully loaded this 150-lb machine carefully into my PT Cruiser. Not a Scratch, and the store manager was concerned about my well being since I would be unloading it all by my self. He respectfully instructed me on its use, so I understood how to operate it. Upon returning the machine, the store team members carefully unloaded this overweight machine and again nothing but the upmost care and respect for me and my car. This store nor it's employees deserve the petty comments made by others. I had a very upsetting customer experience at your Palatine, IL True Value Hardware store on Saturday, October 1, 2016. I had a paid receipt from another True Value store for a $12.99 tub diverter spout. The item was new, unused, in its original packaging. The man who refused the refund, later identified himself as the Manager (Shaun, or maybe spelled Sean). When I questioned why he wouldn't take it back, he said, why would I buy that back from you at full price, when I don't need that and could buy it at cost, if I needed more? He continually interrupted and talked over me every time I tried to say something. He even laughed at me when I said I was going to notify the corporate office because he wasn't representing the True Value name very well. This manager was more interested in his moral high ground of being "right" in his own rational way of thinking, then ever considering the customer who might be confused and upset at being directed to return it to another True Value because it wasn't convenient or cost effective for him to refund the purchase. I have always tried to support the smaller businesses, but not at the expense of common sense and decency towards another. This was a store that my household has regularly shopped before, but will no longer. Mr. Manager, how about calculating the loss of a customer that spent $200 last year, against your "righteousness" in taking back a $12.99 item? read more

I used to like this store, until.... I had to try to return something. I purchased a $150 leaf blower (mistake getting that from a store like this), it stopped working less than an hour after I bought it. Oh well, no big deal, it happens, went back with receipt only to be told that they can't take it back because I had put gas in it?? How else was I supposed to use it?! That wasn't the worst of it, the employees that work there are HORRIBLE, I could go on about them, but I'll just share a couple of the 'gems'. When I asked for the managers name I was told "I'm not telling you anything!" When I wanted to recap the story to a woman calling 'for' the manager, she told me "I don't have to listen to you lecture, I'm trying to help you!" Her idea of 'help' was for me to bring the blower back and they would send it back to the manufacturer and IF they got a credit they would refund my money maybe in 2-3 weeks! HA! This place is a joke. If you do shop there, do NOT pay in cash and don't by anything that you might have to return, if you pay with a card at least you'll have recourse with your credit card company, unlike me who is screwed. read more
