I am currently in transition between homes and my Bösendorfer 214-VC is crated waiting for my new home to be completed. I went online and reviewed the various "hybrid" piano options available from Yamaha and Kawai.
Today, I stopped into the Music Exchange in Dublin, CA to see if a "hybrid piano" truly had the touch and sound of a traditional acoustic piano. In all honesty, I was expecting to find some over priced Casio electric piano sounding "toys" encased in a particle board, plastic veneered housing. I was wrong!
When I arrived, I was welcomed by an amazingly pleasant and warming lady named Mary, the kind of person that reminds you of your mom and you want to hung. She showed me to a hybrid piano and we began to build a very nice rapport. Her husband, Gary, is the store manager. He is a larger than life individual and the nicest most down to earth person I have ever met.
He asked me what was important to me in a piano which I replied, touch and then sound. He played a lower F chord on the hybrid and I got goose bumps! Serious chills went down my spine. I had no idea that an electric hybrid piano could sound so amazing! Mary gave me a pair of head phones and told me to play as long as I liked. I continued to play for approx 30 minutes astounded by the sound quality and feel of this piano. I was set to buy the one I was playing however, it felt like playing an upright piano with an actual upright piano action. There is nothing wrong with the feel, but I am used to a grand piano touch.
Gary came over and showed me a Yamaha N1, which has a full grand piano key along with a true grand piano feel AND sound! With Goose bumps up my arms and a giant smile on my face, I played the N1 for approx 45 minutes and was sold!
Gary is a professional jazz pianist and has been in the piano sales world representing the pinnacle of the worlds greatest piano manufactures over most of his adult life, which is a long time! Lol.
He and Mary are passionate about music and make sure that their customers are custom fitted with the best instrument to fulfill any level of pianist. They are NO pressure, take your time, ask as many questions as you want kind of people.
After spending several hours with them, I felt like I was part of their and the music exchange family and we hadn't even discussed price or if I was actually going to purchase anything! I finally asked what the price was on the N1 and was told the retail price, the discounted and then Gary said, "Let me see if I can get you a better deal". I didn't ask for a better a deal. He took it upon himself to get me the best price possible on the Yamaha N1! No haggling, no "let's make the customer feel guilty by reminding them that by giving a discount they are keeping him from buying grocery's for the week! I was shocked. At this point how could I not buy a piano. Lol. It would be akin to me telling my best friend (whom I had just met but felt like I had known my entire life) that despite our life long relationship, I would shop elsewhere. Lol.
Gary had the paperwork all completed, asked when I would like the piano delivered and that was it! Truly one of the most amazingly painless purchases I have ever made!
I was there past closing time talking to Gary and playing the piano still in awe of this incredible instrument I had just purchased but more importantly how excited I was to have met someone who is more passionate about music than I am.
I will never buy another piano anywhere else. The showroom, selection, price points, brands that are represented , customer service, delivery and after the sale service is beyond reproach and honestly anything I have ever experienced.
Thank you Gary and Mary for custom fitting me with an instrument that may very well become my daily go-to player!
