Here's what you need to consider when looking to rent an instrument or hire a music teacher at JAMS...
I was initially very happy with JAMS; the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful...just what I needed. Having no musical background myself, my 5th grader's ambition to play trombone was uncharted territory for me.
Like most parents of beginners, we were holding off on purchasing an instrument until we were more certain of her commitment level. Renting is the best approach, but we later learned that not all music stores are equal in this regard...not by a long shot.
After a little over a year of renting, for $30/month, I inquired about options to purchase a trombone. The owner, John, was very reassuring and encouraged us to consider renting a little longer since a new trombone can run $800 or more, depending on the type she will need in the upper grades. Given the length of time we rented, once we reach that point, he said he would definitely "take care of us".
For my part, I should have gotten more specifics about what that would look like, but I appreciated that there was no pressure to buy, and we had more time to decide.
Upon successfully auditioning for 8th grade band, we were ready to make the investment of buying our daughter a trombone. Since she was accustomed to the rental, we inquired about purchasing that one ...and despite this not being a policy of JAMS, John agreed to make us an offer based on our rental length of time.
After 32 months of renting (that's $960), the owner has offered to sell us the used, *previously rented trombone* for $300. It retails for $699 brand new.
That's quite a deal, for him.
This business model, while great for the owner, is truly unworthy of loyal customers who have invested so much time and money in his store.
And the worst part? This is not typical or standard policy for many other local music stores. We discovered that most music stores, if not all, have a rent-to-own policy.
For example: at a competitor, if you rent for 8 months or more, the ENTIRE total of your rental cost goes toward the purchase of the rental, OR toward the purchase of a brand new trombone. Another store in the area has a similar policy after 10 months. And both offer rentals for around $24/month.
At other stores, your longterm rental is truly an investment and you would/could own the rental trombone before exceeding the retail price.
And as for the lessons offered through JAMS...our daughter's teacher is an experienced trombone player, but this does not necessarily translate to being a skilled instructor.
While our daughter enjoyed her lessons, it seemed the lessons were mostly student-lead, with her instructor asking what she would like to work on. After months of little to no feedback from the instructor, and repeated issues with scheduling, we decided it was time for a different instructor with more discipline and structure.
However, all the area trombone instructors have a looong waitlist, so after 9 months with JAMS, we finally scored a spot with an amazing instructor elsewhere.
She's not only a talented musician, she has experience teaching trombone at the university level, and the difference is astounding. She discovered that our daughter's previous instructor was allowing her to pencil in the positions on her music sheets, versus ensuring she learns to sight-read music (!!)
We now also receive detailed notes, emailed after each lesson, along with practice sheets to print out, tailored to our daughter's specific needs. And when her instructor has out of town gigs, she offers facetime lessons, at a reduced price, to avoid long gaps between lessons.
(This should give parents an idea of what to look for when interviewing instructors.)
We know, without a doubt, that her new instructor is the difference in getting our daughter to the next level.
So we are out $1,260 in lessons, and $960 in nearly 3 yrs of autopay rental fees, with very little to show. Frustrated and disappointed to say the least, but lesson learned.
