Rex is a wonderful teacher. I enjoy his classical style of teaching because it provides a great foundation for learning the guitar opposed to searching for scraps of knowledge on YouTube. His teaching style is easy to follow and the progression through the books he provides for free is the best resources I've found. Guitar Confidence is a suitable name because it's definitely helped me get past the beginner hill I've spent a long time trying to climb. Reading tab or sheet music is now a breeze and playing guitar is something I can see myself doing for years to come. read more

Michael Murray has being teaching my 10 year old son for a little over a year now. It's amazing the progress he's been able to make with him over that time both in person, and now remote (due to the pandemic). Mike Murray is an excellent teacher. He knows how to work with kids, how to engage them and keep them interested. He's very professional, he gives a free trial lesson to get acquainted, makes notes during class, sets expectations on the home work, suggests apps and tools to improve and uses technology to assist his teaching. He's also very fun, he plays a lot of cool music on his guitar for us, there's a lot of chatter and laughter and we look forward to our classes. He's become a friend of our family! My wife asked for guitar lessons for Christmas and I was lucky enough to find Rex. There are two things that particularly jump out that prompted me to write this review: Rex comes to your house and doesn't charge more to include my son in with the lessons. If you've seen the videos on his website, Rex is obviously a gifted musician. In addition to that, though, he is personable and informative. And he was nice enough to meet me at a Starbucks so I could make plans to surprise my wife. And I'd give Mike 5 more stars if I could. It's going to be a year since Mike started teaching my daughter. You know how kids are nowadays. If they don't like the teacher there's no way they're connecting to the subject. No such problem with Mike. Mike established such a connection with my kid that guitar practice is the only thing I don't need to remind her to do every day. She loves guitar and even during these remote sessions Mike has been able to keep that interest going for her. I did not think she'd be able to make much progress with remote sessions but she has. He is constantly encouraging her. He is also a true professional. He always checks in the early morning of the day of the class. He gives me enough notice in case he has to reschedule. I've been taking guitar lessons from Rex for a little over a year now. Prior to taking lessons with him, I'd normally play songs by looking at tablature. Rex has demystified the theory behind chords and reading sheet music. His method is very progressive so you learn topics that build on each other and start to paint to the bigger picture. With that said, he also will work with you depending on the style/genre you want to learn. With me, I want to learn jazz and bossa nova, so he puts together bossa nova and jazz pieces for me to play when I'm ready for them. I wanted to improve my knowledge of guitar out of basic open chords, barre chords and pentatonic scales. I wanted to make my guitar playing interesting and exciting. My friend Devin, who had taught me how to play guitar, took lessons with Rex and recommended him to me. I checked out his website guitar-confidence.com where I led myself to a video of Rex playing a solo on a song called "For the Lord is my Tower". I immediately thought "I need to schedule lessons with this guy right away!". Luckily for me scheduling a FREE trial lesson was as easy as picking a time and date on which I was available. I recieved a text from Rex 20 minutes later saying that he confirmed the lesson. After calling Rex to see what kind of guy he was, I found that he was very relaxed, easy going, funny and enthusiastic about helping me learn guitar through his methods. I have to prepare songs on a weekly basis for each sunday's church service. Through studying with Rex I can create smooth voice leading with chords without having to spend hours memorizing tabs. My soloing ability has also branched out of the pentatonic shapes to the point where I can go anywhere on the guitar neck. Rex has a great ear and can pinpoint where my trouble spots and mistakes are when I play. I dont have to worry about playing fast or being perfect, as long as I can demonstrate a deep familiarity with the material. I had been struggling to play guitar since a long time and enrolled myself to an online guitar course (JustinGuitar). Justin is a great guy and I was doing okay but I never realized I was learning music without UNDERSTANDING music. Let me give you an example, you can memorize chords formation but if you don't understand for instance, why an "A" chord is called an A chord or why in some chords you play all 6 strings and in some you don't. All these questions were answered by Rex. Now memorizing chords formation has become so easy and it comes naturally. He is a great teacher, very patient and super professional. I started with a free lesson and in the very first class he introduced me to the music theory. He handed over some books for reference and in each class provides a worksheet to practice at home. To make the class entertaining he teaches a new song every class. You will start playing songs from your very second class and will start reading music sheets from your third class. I have been taking Guitar lessons with Rex for the last 2 months. He is a great teacher and knows the intricacies of teaching guitar really well. He is a good communicator and knows quickly the areas to focus on. I really like his finger stretching, flat and finger picking exercises. Rex is a great guitar teacher! I am fortunate to have found him! I didn't knew anything about Guitar until my wife surprised me with one on my last birthday. We yelped and found Rex! He had great recommendations and can also comes to your house! I decided to try as he was generous to offer the first class free. The first class went great and I have been learning from him for about six months now. He is very professional and an expert player. I like his approach for beginners and books he suggests me to follow. I am a software architect by profession; and my work can become pretty hectic at times. Rex gives the comfort I need when I am slow and paces the instructions accordingly, which is really helpful unlike a class with 10 students and you have to catch-up whatever be the case. I am taking an early morning class as it works perfectly with my daughter sleeping and Rex is able to accommodate a schedule for me. He is typically at home about 10 to 15 minutes before the class! Both my 9-year-old and I are taking lessons with Rex on the ukulele and guitar, respectively. We enjoy our lessons and the vast experience Rex has. It's been great not having to drive to lessons but have him come to our house. I had learned strumming on my own a couple of years ago but found it difficult to pick up techniques on my own - not knowing whether I was doing it right or identifying what I was doing wrong. Having grown up in Hawaii, I have always wanted to play the ukulele but never had the time or the money for lessons. As the saying goes "Better late than never", I decided to look for a ukulele teacher and start taking lessons. I found Rex at Guitar Confidence on Yelp. I contacted him, he gave me suggestions on what type of ukulele to purchase and the best part is that he comes to your house to give you lessons. How easy is that? The other lessons that I found required me to go to their studio either in Berkeley or San Jose....not to my home. Rex has been a great teacher. Very knowledgeable, patient and very friendly and funny. I've been taking Ukulele lessons from Rex for about 3 months. Within those 3 months, I have learned to read music.....I still have a long way to go. I have learned to strum as well as pick different chords. I even learned to play my first song..."Over the Rainbow." Lessons are 1 hour every 2 weeks and if you miss a lesson, you can make it up through Skype. You have homework to practice between lessons but you get what you put into it.
