Rex is a wonderful teacher. I enjoy his classical style of teaching because it provides a great foundation for learning the guitar opposed to searching for scraps of knowledge on YouTube. Michael Murray has being teaching my 10 year old son for a little over a year now. It's amazing the progress he's been able to make with him over that time both in person, and now remote (due to the pandemic). My wife asked for guitar lessons for Christmas and I was lucky enough to find Rex. There are two things that particularly jump out that prompted me to write this review: Rex comes to your house and doesn't charge more to include my son in with the lessons. If they don't like the teacher there's no way they're connecting to the subject. No such problem with Mike. Mike established such a connection with my kid that guitar practice is the only thing I don't need to remind her to do every day. She loves guitar and even during these remote sessions Mike has been able to keep that interest going for her. I did not think she'd be able to make much progress with remote sessions but she has. I've been taking guitar lessons from Rex for a little over a year now. Prior to taking lessons with him, I'd normally play songs by looking at tablature. Rex has demystified the theory behind chords and reading sheet music. His method is very progressive so you learn topics that build on each other and start to paint to the bigger picture. With that said, he also will work with you depending on the style/genre you want to learn. With me, I want to learn jazz and bossa nova, so he puts together bossa nova and jazz pieces for me to play when I'm ready for them. I wanted to improve my knowledge of guitar out of basic open chords, barre chords and pentatonic scales. I wanted to make my guitar playing interesting and exciting. My friend Devin, who had taught me how to play guitar, took lessons with Rex and recommended him to me. I had been struggling to play guitar since a long time and enrolled myself to an online guitar course (JustinGuitar). Justin is a great guy and I was doing okay but I never realized I was learning music without UNDERSTANDING music. Let me give you an example, you can memorize chords formation but if you don't understand for instance, why an "A" chord is called an A chord or why in some chords you play all 6 strings and in some you don't. All these questions were answered by Rex. Now memorizing chords formation has become so easy and it comes naturally. He is a great teacher, very patient and super professional. I started with a free lesson and in the very first class he introduced me to the music theory. He handed over some books for reference and in each class provides a worksheet to practice at home. To make the class entertaining he teaches a new song every class. You will start playing songs from your very second class and will start reading music sheets from your third class. I have been taking Guitar lessons with Rex for the last 2 months. He is a great teacher and knows the intricacies of teaching guitar really well. I like his approach for beginners and books he suggests me to follow. I am a software architect by profession; and my work can become pretty hectic at times. Rex gives the comfort I need when I am slow and paces the instructions accordingly, which is really helpful unlike a class with 10 students and you have to catch-up whatever be the case. Both my 9-year-old and I are taking lessons with Rex on the ukulele and guitar, respectively. We enjoy our lessons and the vast experience Rex has. It's been great not having to drive to lessons but have him come to our house. Having grown up in Hawaii, I have always wanted to play the ukulele but never had the time or the money for lessons. As the saying goes "Better late than never", I decided to look for a ukulele teacher and start taking lessons. I found Rex at Guitar Confidence on Yelp. I contacted him, he gave me suggestions on what type of ukulele to purchase and the best part is that he comes to your house to give you lessons. How easy is that? The other lessons that I found required me to go to their studio either in Berkeley or San Jose....not to my home. Rex has been a great teacher. Very knowledgeable, patient and very friendly and funny. I've been taking Ukulele lessons from Rex for about 3 months. Within those 3 months, I have learned to read music.....I still have a long way to go. I have learned to strum as well as pick different chords. I even learned to play my first song..."Over the Rainbow." Lessons are 1 hour every 2 weeks and if you miss a lesson, you can make it up through Skype. You have homework to practice between lessons but you get what you put into it.
