I was browsing for a few minutes, then left, telling the employees that I may be back later to buy. I walked a block or so away, and was suddenly called from behind in the middle of a nearby shopping centre parking lot. The lady working at the store had driven after me, following me, and told me to open my jacket and my pockets, accusing me of shoplifting, saying that I had "slipped something into my jacket", and I was "caught on video". I did not steal anything, so without reservation, I opened my jacket and my pockets to show her I had nothing, then she left. I walked back to the store, as this confrontation really irked me. I understand that, as a business owner, you will do all you can to prevent people from stealing, I get that. But the way that this was done in my situation, considering that I was innocent, was definitely not professional, and I felt attacked and embarrassed. I spoke to the lady again, and aired my grievance, whilst also empathizing. However, "I saw you bend down" and "you were wearing a mask" (in this time of covid-19, no less) are not acceptable excuses for this type of behavior on customers. I hope this does not happen to anyone else. This was my first time in this store, and I do not think I will return. read more
