Pros: -Good bagels & cream cheese -Good coffee -Murray's has seating and I can usually get a seat, especially if I put my totebag & book down on a table before ordering. Cons: -They don't toast the bagels. -Not much "atmosphere" (which is pretty typical, for a bagel place)--there is seating but it's nothing special and the place can be a bit cramped/crowded. EDIT (March '15): they have changed the table arrangements in there and there seems to be less seating than before. Makes the place look less comfortable than it did before, which led me to remove a star (for now, anyway). Those aren't terrible cons though, and I'll continue to go to Murray's. If you go an "off" hour--a little past the typical lunch hour--it's somewhat less crowded, especially if you want to sit down. read more

After eating all of the Chinese food Flushing had to offer and the entire menu from Rouge Tomate the previous day, we opted for a bagel brunch the next day. The line was out the door -- a good sign what you're about to have is going to be totally delicious and worth the wait. And it was. I had a sesame bagel with gravlax, plain cream cheese, red onion and cucumber. And it couldn't have been more perfect. Gah, I can't wait to come back. Bagels in DC are pretty much ruined for me now. read more

I am a fan of this place. The bagels in my opinion are as close to a true NY bagel that you can get. I usually stick to the everything with CC when I am trying a new Bagel place and this time I was really impressed. Staff is cool and they have a nice selection of treats upfront near the register. The coffee was good too. Only one thing surprised me and that's the price. Call me old school but $6.75 for a bagel and coffee seems a bit high to me. Anyone remember getting a bagel for like $1.50? I guess times are a changin'. read more

CHECK YOUR ORDER. This place makes great expensive bagels, but they are careless and often either make the bagels incorrectly or leave out items entirely. Happened to me today and they won't refund me for the missing item because I didn't keep the receipt. I know my order number but they won't look for the copy. Crooks. read more

Yum yum yum yum. I got an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and it was absolutely fantastic. Legit bagels. I'm so sad that I didn't go here everyday during my trip. A must if you are a local or a visitor.

What happened? Previous visits to the city I would have rated Murray's at least 4 stars! After this morning I probably won't go back. There was no line in front of us, which should have told us something because previous visits the line was out the door. It appeared everyone there was working hard, except the lady calling the numbers and handing out the orders. As we waited (for a very long time) we could see our order. When inquiring we were told "waiting on the egg salad." Still waiting we could see egg salad being scooped out for another customer. Inquired again, by now people with numbers 20 higher than us were being handed their food. Our order was ready the whole time! The young lady was very unprofessional and took no pride in her job! Long story long, we got back to the apartment, our coffee and latkes were cold, and order was wrong. read more

When all you're craving a good old hand rolled bagel, this is the place to go. sometimes you just want a plain dry bagel (or is that just me?), this is the place to get it. of course if you want to be fancy schmancy you can get it with cream cheese and lox. read more

I have yet to find my favorite bagel place. Wasn't satisfied the first time I went, still wasn't satisfied the second time I went. The bagels are okay, they're way more popular than it should be. I feel like it's the most obvious famous bagel place in New York, but I wouldn't take my friends who are visiting here. I asked for the bagels to be toasted but it wasn't even warm and I couldn't tell if it was freshly made that day or not ( probably but it didn't taste like it). I got the Nova Scotia with scallion cream cheese on an everything bagel and the salmon was too salty. I didn't taste much except for the salt and other than that the bagel didn't have much flavor. It was just a plain smoked salmon bagel. The place was packed with people and although the line went fairy fast, I wouldn't come here and wait to get just standard bagels. Even starbucks has better, softer bagels and some other more local shops had more satisfying authentic bagels than here. read more

Connecticut is great, but its tough to find a good bagel. So I look forward to visits to NYC to stock up on a good bagel. We used to go to H&H. But after they closed, it was tough to find one. We think we may have it in Murray's bagels. Very tasty (if a bit large) and they were warm, even as we arrived at noon. Long line but it moves. Go for the everything bagel and the egg sandwich looked amazing too. So, now we have 24 (actually 23) bagels left to slice and freeze to enjoy over the coming weeks. Mmmmm. read more

Came seeking a chewy, carb-y NYC bagel but was unimpressed by murrays :( Typically I'm happy with any bagel in NYC (and this place came recommended by a local) but I found the bagel too much like store bought bread, instead of doughy and chewy like a bagel. It was just not satisfying and didn't satisfy the morning bagel craving!...and I only ate half (which never happens people!) Otherwise Murray's has a great selection of bagels, spreads, salads, creative sandwiches, and baked goodies at the counter. Had to wait about 10 min at 9am on a Saturday morning. Friendly service. Next time I'll be sticking with EssaBagel or Jumbo bagel (or trying somewhere new like a true yelper!) read more

I believe this was my first New York bagel experience, and I was very pleased! Even MORE pleased to hear about the TOFU "CREAM CHEESE" SPREAD!!! Oh my goodness, a health-nut's dream! I love delicious food that is not traditionally healthy, like bagels and cream cheese, so to have the option of fresh whole wheat New York bagels and tofu spread is amazing... and it tasted even amazing-er. I heard about the "scooped" option later (they scoop out the inner part of the bagel, so it's less carbs?), which would've been cool to try. My friend and I split the whole wheat bagel with the tofu spread, lox, tomatoes, onions, and capers. YUM! I like how they nicely cut the bagel and put it in the plastic container too. Made it easier to share and eat. And their fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice was out of this world. However, their service was awful. Perhaps I'm not used to New York service, but the man making our bagel clearly hated his life. My bf and friend's bagel took FOREVER to get out (simple bagel with egg and avocado...). They kindly asked about it after it had been ten minutes since the people behind them in line got their bagels, and the lady was so rude "I'll CALL IT when IT COMES!" Rude. And the seating area was a mess. But that bagel was darn delicious. read more

Firstly, I come from Portland where a bagel is considered anything that is made of dough and has a hole in the middle. Basically a non-sweet donut if you will. With that said, this was the best bagel ever to get into my mouth. I got a salt with chive cream cheese. It was so soft on the inside, and perfect on the outside, and there was just the right amount of delish cream cheese. My girlfriend got an egg sandwich on a garlic bagel and it was amazing as well, 'cept she had rank garlic breath the whole rest of the day. I am sitting here in rainy Portland kicking myself that I didn't bring a bunch of these home. read more

Summary: Possibly the worst service I've ever received. After I informed Murray's that they got an order wrong, instead of offering a quick, "sorry about that" and resolution of the issue, they were incredibly rude (as other people have noted on Yelp), incompetent, disengaged and argumentative. Terrible service recovery and mediocre food the other times I successfully came away with food. More Details: I asked for a salad with a modification and when I got back to my office and realized the modification was incorrect, I went to Murray's to explain the issue. I had to wave down someone, who finally grunted something at me, avoided all eye contact and went about their business. I had to ask a second time for them to remake the salad. When they were remaking the second salad, I noticed they messed up again, so I told them to forget it and asked for a refund. Their response was, "well you should have told us about the modification." This is a confusing response, given that the modification is noted on the receipt and they knew they had made an error the first time. read more

I'm torn as to whether I should give a 3 or 4 star review. For starters the food is good. The soups, bagels, sandwiches are all very tasty. The problem is the service. Granted, I used to work near here and would go once or twice a week, but they were constantly messing up my orders so I eventually stopped going. read more

What's so great about Murrays Bagels? Everything. The bagels are fresh, and the selections are endless! You can order any one of their pre made bagel sandwiches, or create your own with any bagel, any toppings, on the fly. I typically order a multi-grain bagel with breaded chicken, provolone cheese and avocado... Better than any old deli sandwich you'll find in the west village. Not to mention, they have pretty good coffee/espresso too. If you walk past the entrance and wonder why there's always a line, it's because it's worth it! There is sufficient seating if you'd like to stay in and eat, but I always get it to go. The house made chicken salad is amazing, and so is the salmon that they put on a bagel with cream cheese... YUM! The service is speedy, they are able to keep up with orders and usually have me in and out in under 10 minutes. Thank God there's two locations in the West Village!! read more

Even at 11 am Murray's Bagels had a sizable line waiting once you entered. One thing you notice right away is some of their cool artwork posted on the walls involving bagels. Seating is an option inside but was almost fully taken on this morning. I immediately enjoyed the taste of the cream cheese inside the bagel. The bagel itself was on the softer side, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I do prefer when it is crunchier. read more

Amazing bagels probably the best i have ever had in NYC. Its usually a long lone but worth the wait!

Yum-o! Met up with a friend for an afternoon coffee catch up chat and was delighted to dine at Murray's. During my short wait in line I gazed at the array of freshly baked bagels. I started to get my hopes up on the idea of maybe devouring the best ham, egg, and cheese sandwich ever by the looks of their scrumptious everything bagels - unfortunately they stop eggs at 1:00. Backup plan wheat bagel with strawberry cream cheese with chunks of fresh ripe strawbs was a lil' messy but didn't disappoint. Coffee was delish, black, hot, and styrofoam free. read more

Came here looking for egg/cheese on a bagel. I had been turned down by Lenny's down the street because it was now "lunch time." Eggs should be an all-day mandate, sheesh! Thank heavens we found Murray's Bagels. I got up to order, and asked for egg/cheese on a TOASTED everything bagel. The server said their bagels are freshly baked and do not need to be toasted. There is no toaster. I probably looked at him with death eyes, but since we had been rejected at Lenny's, we quickly ordered and crossed our fingers....drum roll please: YUM!!! OK OK, I feel bad I pre-judged. These bagels were warm and fluffy, and did not need to be toasted! I was pretty impressed. I will be back Murray's! read more

TL;DR Quintessential NYC bagel store. Hey folks, after having left the city for greener, cleaner, and quieter pastures, I've struggled with being uprooted from a number of New York essentials, which includes good bagels. So when I was in town and craving a simple, quick breakfast downtown, I automatically knew what to get. Clearly this wasn't a unique idea, as the place was packed, but after waiting on the line (for probably much longer than I should have) I was rewarded with a bagel with the perfect amount of dough-iness, chew, toppings (don't skimp on the everything spice people!), and schmear options (scallion cream cheese FTW). Next time I'll see if they can execute a proper bacon, egg, and cheese. read more

If you can catch them when there isn't a line of more than 4 people...they have good bagels. On this particular day, I received a whole wheat bagel instead of the normal one that I ordered. Also, the register process is too slow. They execute the orders different every time. Also...there should be a "bagel and coffee" only line. Other than that, the bagels are good (not the best in NY) and are now $1.45 each. Good variety of candy, cookies and other pastries along with a large selection of drinks. read more

I'm not a bagel fanatic by any means. Too much dough, too heavy, all carbs. But when I do crave a good bagel I want the good kind. I first got to try Murray's after someone brought them for a work meeting. I was surprised at how much I liked them so I decided to check them out one morning. After perusing Yelp reviews I decided I should try the Rivington sandwich. A little expensive but oh my goodness!! How on earth have I never had sable before?! Seriously, the combination of lox and sable was just so amazing I texted my bf about it, I posted it on FB, yea I was blown away! From now on I'm getting sable when I get lox for those nights I do wine, cheese, charcuterie, and smoked fish for dinner. And yes, if you are a fan of bagels then Murray's is among the top. Murray's makes the best chopped chicken liver! Have it on a lightly toasted pumpernickel bagel and you'll hear the angels sing! This is a fairly small shop with an odd ordering system. You enter in the front and go to the back of the store to stand on a line to order, then return to the front of the store to wait for your number to be called. There are a few tables along the perimeter in the front of the store so there's always a crowd and it can be confusing. But it's quick and well worth it! read more

Ever since the devastating loss of H&H, New Yorkers have been without a go to spot for bagels. Have no fear, Murrays is to the rescue, they are no H&H but they are still really good. We came for lunch, specifically a bagel with lox. I love how they do not just have one option for smoked salmon, they have many different fillets that you can choose from with respective price points. The bagel was delicious, it had that hard outside but chewy on the inside. The bagels themselves are fine to eat by yourself, but once they put on all the sandwich toppings, it turns into a gigantic sandwich. I recommend splitting a sandwich and maybe having a salad and soup on the side. They also have a really great juice and pop selection, they Serve Boylans Root Beer, and Martinellis apple juice. Overall Murrays is a great neighbourhood lunch spot, i do miss H&H, but if i am in the nieghbourhood, i would definitely stop in for a bagel. read more

One word: Love! This place is reliable on having wonderful bagels. Conveniently located right near the New School- thank you University gods- I found myself coming here whenever I was near school. Hungry and need something to fill you up for a while? Salmon bagel sandwich, enough said. Those things are massive. I like mine on a whole wheat bagel. This place consistently makes every list of NYC's best bagels. I guess that's why I expected more from here. Anyways, the place is a fairly young New York icon that opened in 1996. Despite its young age, the place is very popular with both locals and tourists. I guess the line on weekend mornings is out the door! I went in the late morning on a weekday and there were maybe ten or so people in front of me. If you know anything about this place or you've read other reviews before mine I'm sure you know that they refuse to toast bagels here because the bagels are so fresh. I had to laugh when a girl in front of me in line asked them to toast her's and the guy just firmly stared at her saying "We don't do that." I totally saw that one coming. Well, I have no problem with that at all. In fact I like it. Its part of that gruff NY attitude which is one of the reasons I love this city so much. Anyways, the bagels I got weren't fresh enough to be warm. They had cooled to room temperature as if they had been sitting for an hour or so. At other NYC bagel shops I've been to the bagels I've got were either piping hot or at least still warm. They have a nice selection here of bagels, spreads, cream cheeses and other toppings. They also do a nice variety of bagel sandwiches and such. I ordered an everything bagel with sun dried tomato cream cheese. I also ordered a bialy since I had heard of them, but never tried one. My advice: skip the bialy, it was smaller and dryer than a regular bagel. The everything bagel was pretty big and had lots of cream cheese. Still, it just didn't have that fresh out of the cooker taste. The inside of this place is small and there aren't many tables. I was able to snatch a table and I really enjoyed sitting, people watching, and eating my breakfast here. If you come during a busy time you might want to plan on getting your bagel to go. If I happen to be in the vicinity of here on my next trip to NYC I would probably stop back in if I was in the mood for a bagel. The place isn't bad, but there are better bagels in NYC. Overall, I give this place two stars for being a New York icon and another star for having a pretty good selection of bagels and toppings. I can't give it anymore than that. I do recommend giving it a try to form your own opinion. read more

This place si very close to School, and so any time i am Hungry--I stop by. I always order the same thing: sesame seed bagel with vegetable cream cheese. Till this day, I have not been disappointed. The bagel itself is very hearty and has a really good flavor. Just as a heads up; they do not toast their bagels and they aren't warm. That being said, the vegetable cream cheese is also pretty amazing, and combined, they make for a fast and delicious meal. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone that just wants a fast bagel or sand which-- I haven't tried their salads, so I cannot speak on that behalf... but I imagine they are good.
