My wife and i stopped by there today and I'm not Vegan or Vegetarian but we both thoroughly enjoyed the food. I had the Shrimp plate with fries and my wife had the 20 piece chicken wing plate with coleslaw. As the name implies, it is not a fancy dine in place but the food specialty makes up for it. I wasn't that impressed with the Murray Hillbilly. When you get there you order everything on an iPad with no assistance. Upon completing your transaction you're asked to tip, I tipped because I'm a decent human being but WHAT did I get out of that tip? Nothing, they don't even deliver your drinks or food. It was not because they were short staffed, this is how the operate regularly. Staff was friendly though. Now on to the food part...I had their popular Buffalo chikun sandwich with a side of fried pickles. The sandwich was extremely greasy making the bun mushy and leaked the entire time. I only ate half because of the mushiness. As for the side of pickles, I was expecting traditional fried pickles, but was disappointed to find out they use sweet pickles instead. Murray is one of my favorite vegan restaurants in Jax! The triple BLT is so delicious I will always recommend. They also have the BEST vegan shrimp it's a bit mind blowing. Only downside is they do not have free water cups or places to fill up your bottle so just an fyi. The staff is really sweet and accommodating. The store itself is cool because they have things other than food for sale, they have eco friendly lifestyle goods, shirts, and accessories. Vegans rejoice they have an outside area but there is no shade and it's a bit rough, but it's dog friendly! read more

Pretty good food! I've been coming here for a few years and have seen the restaurant and management shift over time. This is definitely some seriously good vegan junk food. Some changes haven't been my favorite... the newest owners have removed the value menu which was really the only reason we came here. I don't really feel like paying $20 for a sandwich that I can only eat half of. The fries used to be sooo fresh and much thicker! We asked about a new value menu two years ago and were told it was "coming soon". :( Murray Hillbilly has definitely become a treat now. I'm always down to support a locally owned business, especially if it's vegan but I miss some features of the older menu. If you haven't been here before I'd definitely suggest you try it! Ugh, our experience was incredibly disappointing. Considering how much I support and promote food trucks on a regular basis, I hope Murray Hillbilly emerges through the growing pains. These dudes popped up at a local brewery, so we thought we'd make a night of it. Local beer and local food truck, what can go wrong? Well, the end product resulted in a 50 minute wait, missing ingredients, and a disappointing product. 50 minutes is a long time. I could've watched an episode of Breaking Bad. I could've gotten an oil change. Or two haircuts. Or listened to Dark Side of the Moon and have seven minutes to spare. Once the food arrived, it was survival of the fittest. As you can see from my sandwich, there was no mac and cheese, which was the reason I ordered the dang thing! With a line of people at the truck, I didn't find it worth my time to complain in the moment. As a vegan/vegetarian truck with a limited menu, each dish has to be killer. My vegetarian girlfriend wasn't a fan of hers either. I love the name and concept of their brand, but they have a lot of work to do to win the hearts, minds and bellies of Jacksonville locals. read more

Went here earlier today with my girlfriend and it was THE WORST dining experience I've EVER HAD!!! We got two burgers and parmesan fries. The parmesan fries were mid but edible and the burger was genuinely one of the worst burgers i've had in my life. Burgers are usually one of my favorite foods but it was so bad I couldn't take more than two bites. The ranch and fries were mid and flavorless and there was a disgusting stench that we smelled as soon as we walked in and stayed throughout our meal. My girlfriend was unaware that their cheese had cashews in it and she is highly allergic to tree nuts. She had an allergic reaction soon after we started eating. We couldn't find any tree nut warning or mention on the menu and by the time we could talk to an employee she was feeling pretty bad so we had to go to the hospital. At the hospital i called the restaurant while I was waiting at the hospital to see if I could get a refund since we barely touched our food, and the lady on the phone was very rude and dismissive. She claimed that it was clearly posted on the menu which is just a straight up lie. She also said that because we left (to go to the hospital) a refund was not possible. This restaurant is trash. The food was horrendous. The customer service was dehumanizing. I wouldn't wish this dining experience on my worst enemy. read more

A gem in Murray Hill B+: buffalo ranch chickun. I order this as a salad and it was flavorful. It definitely was not chicken, but it tasted good and was sarisfying. A: Bacon ranch burger. You do not have to be vegan to eat here! The flavours alone make this a spot to return to, but the fact that it's vegan is also very special. My husband came here with some coworkers, 4 out of 5 of the workers were not vegan and the rest were nervous to try meal substitutes. It blew everyone away! So much so, that he brought me to return and other coworkers came to visit also! The buns are soft yet toasty, the pickles were fresh and crisp, the cheese tasted real and the "beef" patty was out of this world! The "chicken" fries were delicious as well. I've been wanting to try this place ever since I heard about it. I ordered the signature Buffalo ranch chickun sandwich with chickun fries on the side. The chickun isn't super "chickeny," but it's tasty, and the sandwich is bursting with flavor. The sauces are spot on! I was torn about whether to try the mac and cheese. As I was leaving, a young couple sat at a table near me (in the small back patio that is now open). I heard moans of delight as they dove into their mac and cheese. That was a 100% effective sales pitch. :-) I will be back, and I will be trying the mac and cheese! (And their other sandwiches because they all sound great.) This is a GREAT 100% plant-based restaurant. UPDATE: I've been dreaming about the mac 'n cheese, so I had to go back. LOL I built my own bowl, adding barbecue chickun, slaw, and ranch. Oh my. I also enjoyed how they offered yummy vegan sweets. The only down falls were: the lighting, the windows had the front extremely bright and the back darker. Went to Murray Hillbilly in late February after finding them on Instagram. I do not eat meat (except seafood) and was very excited to see a vegan restaurant with innovative and exciting food options. They were doing take out only, which was fine, but it was a rainy day and we weren't able to sit out in the patio area and we decided to eat in our car. The food was so interesting and different, I can't wait to go back and try something new. However, they do have a charge for almost every upgrade, including some sauces and sides, which was a bit of a turnoff. But it won't stop me from going back when I'm in the area again. read more

Okay, I was FINALLY able to try TMH. (They're always in different locations across JAX and social media is the only way to know where they'll be.) As for the food, it was PHENOMENAL. I throughly enjoyed it. My only major complaint was the cost. Nearly $20 for one sandwich ($10), a side of mac ($5), and 2 hush puppies with sauce ($4). Add tax and then it was over $20. That is pretty steep for one person...also no beverage included. Granted, I could have decided not to purchase...but I had already driven 30 minutes and was very hungry. I am glad that I did try it though. I would like order from this truck again, but I probably won't solely due to the steep pricing. $20 goes a lot farther with many other local food trucks. read more

I got the ranch chicken sandwich and my partner got a burger the ranch chicken sandwich was delicious especially if you get a side of pickle fries and add them to the sandwich. My partner liked his burger but it probably would've been better if it was a beyond patty instead of a black bean based patty. Food is good and bad depending on what you get. I will go over why. For each. I definitely wouldn't recommend anything fried(mostly). Everything fried over the past couple of times I've been was wither way undercooked and not edible/ just soggy or it was burnt to a crisp. The fries are either burnt or undercooked, so they look like wet noodles (multiple times). The maple chicken biscuit was so overcooked that the "meat" separated from the breading. The breading was really hard and very, very, very dark brown/ black. It was gross and tasted burnt. It looked as dry as a sandbox , as the whole patty was smaller than the size of a tennis ball. Another biscuit I had another time was the same burnt. The biscuit itself wasn't bad though. I've also tried the shrimp, which was also burnt, whether it was on its own or with the po boy sandwich. The bread was even burnt. I mean, the entire loaf was completely black on the inside for both sides. Not sure why they still served it likebthat. Even the wings that I only ordered once were the same burnt/ overcooked. Now for the good to end on a positive. Their sandwiches are typically good and done well. Their chicken fry is actually good ( I only tried it once though) it was on the side. Their other burgers are pretty good, and they do offer the beyond burger or an in-house patty. The get er done has the combo of the grilled "chicken" with the burger patty, which you can swap the burger patty for the beyond burger patty. The scorcher burger is good, too. The in-house patty may not be to everyone's liking, but they do make it thinner now. The beyond patty is a safe bet if you aren't sure, and know you like those already. I'm not sure if they stopped doing desserts as the last few times I've been I haven't seen any available. Customer service is usually good. read more

As a vegan I find this place outrageously overpriced. $40 (with 18% tip and we had to get up to get our own napkins) for two burgers, a cider, and a Coke. The burgers are served on white flour buns , which is disappointing. I would have expected something whole grain. I opted for the house made patty and it wasn't bad but the burger was a sloppy, goopy mess that just tasted like BBQ sauce. After we finished our meal my husband and I looked at each other with the look of "that was $40?" We opted for the Cole slaw side which was good out a tiny serving about the size of an ice cream scoop. This is my second visit to Murray Hillbilly and, sadly, I'll never go back. read more

This was an amazing vegan experience for me! I am not vegan but I love to try vegan foods just to see what I like. I had the Dadgummit (the krab cake one) as a sandwich on gluten free bread and the Muenster mac n cheeze while my sister got the O'vr Yonder (pulled porc) as a salad. It was all delicious, I am a huge fan of regular BBQ and was surprised how flavorful all of the food is here. I 100% recommend this place and would go again. My first time ordering from here was the vegan spicy chicken sandwhich, which is called spicy because of the hotsauce not because there's actual spice. The "chicken" was delicious. The overall sandwhich was a 4/5 the side of fires they came with were burnt (see photo) and not really good :/. The food can be great but it's not consistent. I've been here a good 8 times trying their food and I've ordered the bubba 3 times. And it always taste different or it has way more cabbage than the vegan meat. Last time I counted them out of curiosity and there were only five little strips. They don't like owning up to their mistakes so I don't even try with them anymore. I got the wrong sandwich twice. I called in about it and they insisted it was the right one. It was not. I recently tried their new chicken wings and they were great texture wise but not as advertised. I got the bbq and the buffalo to try both and they taste exactly the same! They didn't put sauce on them like they do in the pictures. They do skimp out on the vegan meat quite often and I don't want to pay $10-11 just to eat some bread. I've been 3 times and unfortunately it will be my last. I checked it out originally because of the great reviews. However, I've yet to experience what I've been reading or seeing. All the pictures of their food look amazing, but their food at times seems unappealing and the portions are inconsistent as well. Extremely small portions for the amount of $$$$ you are spending. Bathrooms are another issue. Poor lighting and not very sanitary. Ordering process can be challenging. The staff can be less enthusiastic at times. I do recommend you at least check it out once and form your own opinion to whether this is a place you want to support. This weekend was our second time visiting this great little spot. Husband and I are both vegetarian, not vegan, but enjoy vegan foods just as much as vegetarian in many cases especially when eating out. We went around noontime and it was a little slow when we got there but by the time we left the place was full of the most diverse crowd imaginable. It was really, really awesome and inspiring to see so many people of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds eating vegan in one place! The owners really have something to be proud of on that front. A++. I digress... FOOD: He ordered the Hillbilly whopper (house made beet veg burger and toppings with hand cut fries and I got the Bubba (soy chicken with slaw and bbq sauce and toppings) with a side of collard kale and beans. I like that each sandwich comes with a side so you are super full and getting a lot of food for your money. They have some drinks including beers in the cooler and tap water from a dispenser for your convenience. Side note: Last time I got the spicy chick-un fry with fried pickles (pickles no longer on the menu sadly!) and husband got the whopper and a side of the Mac and cheez. First thing first, their burger BUNS are top notch. Husband and I both agree the right bread or bun is imperative to a delicious sandwich and The Murray Hillbilly has got the buns dialed in. These are big, messy sandwiches and the large scale soft buns help you contain all the good stuff. Texture and flavor of the chickun in each preparation was very good and what you would expect from a real meat counterpart. I much preferred the spicy chickun fry the first go round and would def order again. The Bubba lacked a little something... maybe the slaw wasn't creamy enough for me? Can't put my finger on it. The fresh cut fries were a little limp and not super flavorful as fresh cut fries can be. Collard kale was surprisingly delicious. It had some beans in it and an overall spicy smoky flavor similar to baked beans that I wasn't expecting. I savored that to the bottom of the bowl. Mac and cheez was creamy and pasta well cooked. I missed the fried pickles this time around and would definitely have ordered those again. If you still have room after your meal there is a small case of vegan sweet treats- cupcakes etc. Also of note is their children's menu. Great options there too to allow the whole family to enjoy a vegan meal and not break the bank. The decor and ambiance could use a little work but it's evident it's all about the food here, and hopefully that will come in time. All in all we left smiling and satisfied both times.
