We came to visit my sister and came to this small town steakhouse. It was definitely busy and delicious!! We had the Murphy trio appetizer and it came with fried pickles, fried mushrooms and onion rings, all delicious and the mushrooms were very juicy. We got sat in a private room because they didn't have our name down for our reservation, they put it for sat instead of Friday. But they were super nice and got us sat we were a group of 10 and loved the private room. I got a ribeye with mash potatoes and it was delicious, juicy and well cooked and also love that it comes with a salad bar. Definitely recommend going and trying it out. They gave my mom a blackberry cobbler that is homemade and you can def taste that it's fresh. The whole rooms sings happy birthday. It's a very small town with a small town steakhouse. Had been planning to go here for over a year and when I was passing nearby, decided to stop. Doesn't look like much more than an old mercantile building from the outside but inside it was a full blown restaurant full of obviously hungry folks. Ordered the 8 oz. Ribeye steak. Came with a side. I chose the baked sweet potato. And a trip to the well stocked salad bar. Finished it off with some cranberry cobbler. Sorely disappointed in our experience here. In my party of seven people, I believe only one of them and truly enjoyed their food. The steaks, which is what their specialty is were overcooked. Some of us got a salad with a spud. The salad bar was less than ideal with brown lettuce and brown, broccoli and frozen cucumbers. And the spuds were not very large. Not worth the price we paid. For being a well-known steakhouse I definitely expected more. We'll think twice before coming again. read more

Sweet potato looked like a **** under low light, but was actually good with their whipped butter. Generous portions. Squash salad was a pleasant surprise. I have eaten here twice and each time I loved the food. It was relatively busy both times but not packed. There is a fair amount of do it yourself vibes while you are there , like the salad bar, and when it comes to pay, so if you are often referred to as a Princess or a King, maybe stay away. It's certainly a down to earth home style restaurant. It's off the beaten path and in an old post office. The staff is friendly but not checking on you every 5 minutes, which I prefer. The food is really good and my steak was cooked just as I asked, medium rare. The onion rings were really really good, as was the chicken fried steak which was massive but I did ask for the larger size. This place is worth it but don't expect trumpets and a red carpet when arriving. Leave your ego bring your hunger. read more

If you want a great steak at a great price in a great place then Murphy's in Winchester is where you need to go. We ordered a ribeye and it came out large, cooked to perfection, and delicious. I ate all I could and brought the rest home to make steak and eggs the next morning. Just for grins, I weighed the leftover steak and it was MORE than the steak I ordered. There is a LOT of food. Almost all meals come with beans, salad and breadstick, and a choice of sides that range from sweet potato to wild rice to seasonal veggies. You can see the list in the menu pic attached. Small Scallops with Wild Rice - 7/10 my scallops were lukewarm at best. They were perfectly cooked though and the wild rice did need some salt. Almost everything needed a little bit more salt. But it was good. Small Chicken Fried Steak with Baked potato - 3/10 My dad said everything was cold. The waitress was nice enough to take it off the bill. My mom ordered a glass of wine but that never came out and the waitress took that off the bill too. So service was good based on the fact that she took care of our problems and was very sweet. The biggest downside is that the heater wasn't on at the back of the restaurant, you can see the temp on the outside, and it wasn't showing a temp. So the majority of our time we were freezing. When we walked through the rest of the restaurant to leave, it was warm. So our eating experience was not a comfortable one. That's the 1 star off. We definitely want to come back and try it again. It had been years since I have been here and decided to make the drive this last weekend. Before I dig into the review I want to point out that they were short staffed and I have never seen a more hard working group of people as I did on Saturday night. Kudo's to everyone for making it happen. The Salad bar was a bare bones bar. We found it difficult to access the dressings, having them way in the back of the bar and the low sneeze guard made it impossible to access them. Having access to the other side of the bar would have helped greatly. I ordered the 10oz. ribeye and my guest ordered an 8 oz ribeye. Both were cooked to perfection. The quality of the cuts were horrible. The 10 oz had approx. 2 oz of untrimmed fat on the point and the steak was difficult to cut (sinewy), I had to pull out my pocket knife to cut the steak. The 8 oz also stringy and tough. Not sure who the purveyor is that they are purchasing from, but I would consider reevaluating them. The upkeep of the restaurant or the lack of. The concrete floor was dirty and grimy. Please hire a service to power wash the floors. If in doubt look at the toe plate under the waitress station. That alone will turn your appetite. One can only wonder if the kitchen is any cleaner? And then to top it off I waited 5 minutes at the cash register for them to take my money. Urgh! I am really disappointed in this place. read more

It's a bit of a hunt to find this place east of Bastrop, but so very much worth it. The environment is very homey and cozy, if a bit on the dark side. You might call it intimate. At the time I visited in late summer, tables were still spaced for pandemic distancing, but I can imagine that will tighten up over time. Steaks are GINORMOUS, and--compared to Austin prices--really, REALLY inexpensive. And good! You don't give up any quality. Sides were also very tasty, too. And, while you don't ever doubt you're in a fancy-ish restaurant, the desserts are visible for display, much like an old-fashioned diner would do. I recommend you spend the time and seek this place out for a relaxing country dinner. read more

As a group of eight, we make the road trip to Winchester, Texas about once per month to eat at Murphy's Steakhouse. The last 2 visits, I have had the 10 or 12 ounce ribeye steak, medium rare with baked potato, the salad bar, and incredible fried mushrooms. My wife had a chicken fried steak as large as her plate, over half of it going home for lunch the next day. The service was wonderful, and I have to say that the ribeye steak was as good as any steak that I have eaten in the finest of steakhouses. Came here for date night suggested by my fiancé, super cute place in Winchester. We came HANGRY and glad we did because these portions were LARGE. Food came out good and hot crispy and ready to eat. I took left overs home as well as a slice of banana nut cake and let me tell you that was so delicious perfect small pieces of dessert for yourself! Service was great, drinks are large too. 4th time here and each time I am blown away with the amount of food we get for the price! Came for lunch and was thinking burger but, the thought of how great the rib eye is! Ordered the 6 oz and as usual it was huge! It was cooked perfect as rare. Have not been daring enough for the blue rare. There is a smokey flavor that just makes you feel like you were at a friends who grilled it fresh for you. Opted for the wild rice instead of the baked potato. it was good, not great, lacked flavor but was a large serving. Salad comes with the meal and was fresh an crisp. Love the side of beans and bread stick. Had the fried pickles as a starter and they were perfect. The pic I took was after eating a bunch and then realizing I forgot to snap a pic. Totally enough to share. All of this is included in the price. Service was good and the server was friendly. The place is dark and nostalgic and you feel like your in Texas. As a still somewhat operating Post Office, it lends to a quirky vibe but, love taking visitors there. My husband and I have went out here twice in the past two months and both times we were ignored by the servers! Today we walked in and sat at a table for ten minutes, three servers walk by and looked right at us and just ignored us! A couple of men walked in and were attended to right away. We have been to Murphy's over a half a dozen times in 2023. Our first few times were amazing but subsequent visits became more and more disappointing. Table service is good when you get any attention. The worst part is that they no longer know how to cook a steak. The last two visits we had to request a re fire on everyone's steak. Two were under cooked and one was over cooked. I have heard that ownership has changed, that could be the problem. read more

You'd never know or hear about this place if you don't know someone from around here. It's that out of place. Located in a very small town on the outskirts of a bigger small town it's a cool place to get a good meal at a very reasonable price. They're known for their ribeye steaks which my sister in law highly recommended. You order your steak by size, 6 - 12 oz, then by wellness, followed by your sides. It also comes with a small salad bar which has quite a few of the traditional toppings you'd find in the Midwest. Mother in law ordered cat fish which was pretty good. We also ordered deep fried pickles as an appetizer which we shared as an additional side dish. It was a bit of a drive for us from Bastrop, 1/2+ hours, and may not be worth it. Our group loves to have dinner here when we visit Round Top twice a year. 6 months ago there were 10 of us, and no one's food was good. The beans were cold, and everyone's steak was tough. March 26, 2025, there were just 4 of us, but food was great! Steak was cooked perfectly. Beans were hot and salad bar was good. The only thing they need to change is the "rolls." They're like "hockey pucks." I believe they buy frozen bread, but they need to buy a proofing machine. Then the rolls would be light and fluffy. read more

The salad bar and bean bar was good. The service was ok just not enough help. But the waitress was friendly. The 6 oz ribeye had great flavor but it was full of fat and sinew so it was hard to cut and stringy to eat. All 3 of us that got a steak at the table agreed that the flavor was good but the cuts of meat were worthless. We took them home as dog food. We probably won't go back because of the drive. When we order steak we want flavor and quality of meat. This was not both! We loved the history of the building but we were there for great steak. read more

I've been to Murphy's several times and the service has always been good. But this is the first time I've been since they brought the salad bar back. The salad bar and beans were great as always. I got the 6 oz Ribeye. While the steak was cooked perfectly and full of flavor, it had so much gristle in it that I could hardly run a knife through it! We dined at Murphy's pre COVID and it was 5 stars. We went back during COVID and it was apparent that they started using a different cut of meat. It was full of gristle and all but uneatable. I decided to give them another shot last night and encountered the same issue. I couldn't even cut it with the poor utensil they provided. This steak probably wouldn't have made good chili meat if it was ground up. It's sad when a once good restaurant decides to cut corners with purchasing quality produce. We were staying in La Grange, and I had chosen Murphy's for our Saturday night out. It's a 15 minute drive through the beautiful countryside. When we arrived, it was exactly what you expect from a Texas steakhouse. It used to be a 1913 Post Office. Loved the interior. Seated quickly, we ordered drinks and the trio appetizer, onion rings, mushrooms, and fried pickles. The mushrooms and pickles were GREAT! I had already seen pictures of the huge, thick onion rings. What we got were skinny onion strings. Not very good. We all ordered the special, the Tuscan ribeye, seasoned with rosemary, garlic, and lemon. Salads, beans, and baked potatoes were all great! The steaks, we were not impressed. So much rosemary, you couldn't taste the garlic or lemon. All 4 were quite tough, with very little marbling. The 3 people with me tried to eat about a fourth of the steak, then pushed it away. I ate about half. Most of it was tough and chewy, but some was ok. We were very disappointed. Later that night, I read some of the other reviews, and many talked about tough steak, just like we had. It's a shame we didn't enjoy the meal, cause I had such high hopes for this place. Went last Friday night and ordered Filet Mignon which came out very tough. Person in charge did not offer to cook another but rather said she would take off our bill. This tells me they realize the quality of their steak was subpar and no matter how many they cooked it would change nothing. Place is very popular and I believe there are excellent choices available but not steaks. Onion rings looked exceptional and I'm sure there are many other very excellent items, but not steaks. A wonderful cozy little place off the beaten path, husband got the chicken fried steak which he could not even finish... that's a first! I got a seafood platter which was also extremely plentiful. Went out to the big town of Winchester, Texas recently doing research for a future car club event. Had heard good things about Murphy's from family members that live nearby. Decided it would be fitting destination if we could avoid the crowds I had also been advised of. So a group of cars left Buda, Texas and hit all back roads in a two hour journey thru Bastrop and Fayette county arriving at exactly 11:00am on a Saturday morning. Some tables were already occupied. A delightful local lady who stated she had lived nearby for over 60 years. Our group of hungry travelers settled in for lunch. At least one of our party had visited before claiming she ordered a 12 ounce ribeye; ate half of it and when she weighed it upon returning to austin it weighed 10 ounces! Well, sounds like my kinda place with classic Texas cuisine. After stuffing my face I wished I lived a little closer than 90 miles. Sadly, I had to abstain from having steak which most of the table ordered. Thank goodness on most days I would order seafood over the tasty cow. For $12.99, that's three blackened catfish filets folks. What else does that come with? Trip to the nicely stocked salad bar and near softball sized baked tater. SO MUCH FOOD for the price. In regular Rooster fashion I also ordered two grilled jumbo shrimp ($3.99) and a stuffed crab ($1.99). I'd personally skip the crab and order more shrimp. Huge togo box made it back to Driftwood. Service was friendly and attentive. One complaint to point out. The old building (LOVE) is kinda dark; waitress bringing a couple of baskets of condiments by ahead of our meal for the tater dressings. Really hard to see what your opening. Tartar sauce looked similar to the sour cream and butter; cocktail sauce was obvious. I've been looking forward to coming here for about two years. We past by here on one of our road trip adventures and saw a bunch of people around an old looking building. Out of curiosity I pulled it up on Google Maps. It showed it to be a place called Murphy's Steakhouse that was located in the former 1913 Post Office building in the little town of Winchester, Texas. We looked at the reviews and some were great, but others weren't too happy. But we are ones to always go check ourselves as I've found out what might be bad to some are great to someone else, or visa versa. We had reservations and were promptly seated even though a big crowd of about 10 people walked in ahead of us! We ordered Ann appetizer called Murphy's Trio of Onion Rings, fried Dill Pickles, and Fried Mushrooms. We went ahead and ordered our dinner. My wife ordered our 6 year old the kids Cheeseburger and fries. She ordered the 10 ounce Ribeye, and I ordered the 12 ounce Ribeye, Medium Rare on both. It comes with a salad and a small bowl of Pinto Beans. You get to pick your other side and we chose Baked Potatoes with the fixings. Our waitress brought out our salad and the bowl of beans. The salad and the pinto beans were both very good! I'd say the Pinto beans were some of the best I've had anywhere!!! Then she brought out the appetizers !!!? Kind of backwards, but maybe that's just me. The Appetizers were all good and wee liked how they did their pickles sliced flat lengthwise! Then come the steaks. I had grilled onions and mushrooms added to top mine. It struck me right off the bat as it did my wife that these did not look like a Ribeye!!! It looked more like a Sirloin Strip and also had the texture of a Sirloin. It was long and tapered, unlike the oval cut and shape off a Ribeye. It did not have the marbleing of a Ribeye either! It was just a little one the tough side and a little grainy like a Sirloin Strip. If we had ordered Sirloins we would not have been disappointed! The steaks also did not seem to have any seasoning. I think they could improve a lot just by seasoning with a little kosher salt and some cracked black pepper and add a couple of pats of butter after cooking to top it off. Other than that experience with our steaks the place is really nice with a great ambience and the people are very friendly and out going! So I'm not sure if it's not or miss. I'd like to give them one more try to find out if it was just an off night ( It was a Saturday evening) and a fluke, or what!!! . . two weeks ago i couldnt order large salad they come in individual sizes.. tonight ordered 3 individual salads and an order of onion rings.. tab came out to 35 dollars i sent my son to pick up i called manager when he came back gave me a list of excuses.. prices are going up because of covid.. really?! admitted to me they upped the price made them large to get rid of the salad because it was going bad without telling me.. waitress puts cold ranch and ketchup in with hot onion rings they are wilted and disgusting.. didnt get a bring.. them back we will give you another one.. youre gonna stick it to your customers who went through same disaster as you instead of keeping prices make them bigger or throw old produce out.. smh.. or at least inform your clientele.. read more

It was my first time here. I ordered the trio appetizer and a 12oz ribeye steak . It was amazing. The prices were great, the food was excellent and our waitress was a doll.
