I've been going to Murphy's for 15 to 20 years. Always have had good customer service and buying experiences with them. I'd much rather spend my money at locally owned music stores, like Murphy's. Employees are local musicians who have years of experience, working in music sales. To me, you can't put a price on that sort of thing. Certain things are hard to quantify, and perhaps don't always apply, but as someone who values locally owned music stores as far more valuable than the giant chains, Murphy's epitomizes the reasons. First, everyone there gets to know you - and more importantly, they remember you. Next, while still in the ll process of recovering from the pandemic's effects, their inventory is increasing rapidly. No Martin or Taylor's just yet, but soon, I'm sure. After that - if you want something they'll find it for you. And, most recently their shop is back up and kicking! When I go exploring in Irving with my girlfriend, we always have to make a stop at Murphy's Music to browse (and sometimes make a impulsive purchase). I personally don't play any of the instruments that are offered in Murphy's (guitars -of different varieties -, keyboards, or drums) so I can't say if they have the best selection of gear available. But, my girlfriend dabbles with guitars and she seems to finds something she likes (but every guitar store makes her feel gitty). The store is large (maybe the same size of or slightly bigger then a Guitar Center), and the staff is usually very courteous / helpful. And talking to the staff, they claim that a lot of local musicians frequently shop at this store (judging by the guy in the back room playing / singing a song, I believe them). Just a heads up, looking through reviews for this place on other websites other people seem to suggest that there is a funky warranty / return program and at times people seem to experience bad customer service. But since I've never seen or experienced this myself, I can not say if this is true. So stop there one day and check this place out whenever you need some new strings. :) read more

Let's start with Murphy's Music is open on SUNDAY!!! I was ready to purchase my first acoustic guitar. With a little research and a few YouTube videos under my belt, I felt I was ready to have a conversation. I walked in and was immediately in awe and completely overwhelmed with the number of acoustic guitars that they had ... everything I thought I knew went out the window. There was a gentleman name Ryan working at the counter. He showed me a beginners guitar that included everything you need to get started. He took the time to explain everything that came with it and demonstrated how to use the clip tuner. The starter kit was reasonably priced ...but I wanted to compare it with the other guitars. We walked over to the acoustic guitars on the wall he explained the wood, strings, straps, picks, bags, etc. Now I felt like I truly had enough information to make a decision. I spotted a pre-owned acoustic guitar that I connected with ... he took it off the wall and played it for me, I was sold. He put new stings on (while I waited) and polished it up really nice. I was impressed. While I was waiting, I walked around the store ...and thought, if you're into music ...this is where you want to be. I asked him about taking lessons and he gave me a business card to contact a guitar instructor. The lessons are at Murphy's. During checkout I showed him the Yelp discount offer 5% off for checking in... he rang me up, applied my discount, put everything in my guitar bag, thank me for coming by...and out the door I go smilin' from ear-to-ear. It was a great shopping experience that it exceed my expectations. read more

Everyone here is real nice. Always pretty helpful. Been buying and trading a lot of pedals with these guys. They really know their stuff. My only complaint is that their return policy seems a little iffy but I'm sure they'll take care of you like they have me for the last 10 or 11 years I've been going. Stopped in for a quick resupply of picks and snare drum repair parts. They were SUPER NICE, really well stocked, and had a great selection of higher end boutique instruments. They also gave my drummer a killer deal on some new cymbals. Way better than guitar center, and since they will ship, I am going to use them whenever possible, especially for major purchases. I am always treated fairly and with respect a Murphys. Never an issue with an order or a return. The staff knows the industry, they're all players. They have gear for every level. They also rent gear. My drummer (drummers...) left his kick pedal at home. We stopped in to see if they had one and they let us rent one. THANKS GUYS!!! Additionally, the founder is a fireman and I know at least some of the employees are volunteer firemen as well. So why not do business with first responders??? read more

Staff is friendly and don't mind if you spend hours there jamming out on their guitars. These guys know their instruments and will guide any new beginner onto the right path. Their prices are competitive and they have a neat wall in the back that has autographed guitars. It's definitely worth taking a look at. Their collection is rather limited though as well as their floorspace (when compared to Guitar Center, etc). However, this is not such a big deal since I've never had any trouble finding anything that I needed there. The parking lot that you have to drive through to get to the store is a PAIN. The road humps are 5ft high, I swear! Any fans of the Office Depot here can testify. read more

I'm huge supporter of local business rather than big box stores. I brought my guitar in for some minor adjustments, I was told to bring it by so they can look at it. I show up and the guy that can give me a price isn't there so I needed to drop it off because he would be back in a few. That few turned into over 4hrs I called before they closed and it was like I never dropped my guitar off. Told them I would be by to pick it up tomorrow if someone could get me at least a quote before then that would be great so I know for the future. Went in after 2pm to pic up my guitar, they once again had no idea what was going on. Just gave me my guitar signed no quote no nothing, signed a slip and left. They might be a knowledgeable staff when it comes to guitars, but their subpar customer service skills left me finding another business to support. read more

I want to post a warning to anyone considering buying gear from Murphy's Music: Do not expect to be treated fairly in the event that your purchase doesn't work out, and you attempt an exchange. Should you choose to exercise your right to return an item (their receipt clearly states that you have 14 days to exchange an item with receipt), expect to be harassed and berated. They will threaten to impose a 15% restocking fee, even for gear purchased one day prior. In the end, after making an attempt to exchange a couple of recently purchased pedals for another, more expensive pedal and being belittled -- I decided to keep my original purchase and walk out of the store, vowing never to return. Please note that this store is the associated with Texas Guitar Ranch online. If you want to buy music gear -- you can find ANYTHING in their inventory comparably priced -- if not substantially cheaper -- elsewhere. And...you won't be subjected to the experience I just endured. read more

Been to Murphy's Music twice for my bass setups and guitar string replacement and both times, service has been stellar. Everyone very friendly and in both cases the job was done sooner than estimated time. I have only been playing for a couple of years so my experience is limited, but compared to the guitar tech result I got at a large chain competitor, I will definitely be back to this business for future needs. Found out today they now have a very knowledgeable and talented luthier on site (not just a guitar tech) with a complete shop in the back. This place has lost my business! It is very unfortunate as I have spent quite a bit of money in an effort to support their business and my needs. I recently called to ask a few simple questions about a product. The person that answered was VERY rude, short tempered, and took zero interest in helping me. Every time I tried to say something he would speak over me as if to flex his knowledge and ability. It saddens me that his arrogance has taken precedence over all those he works with on a daily basis. By acting the way he did, he put himself above everyone else. While visiting family this past June, I had the privilege to patronize this musician's playground! I must say that I had looked far and wide for the right guitar and was just about to give up looking for the rest of the year, until my wife's cousin (West) led me to Murphy's. It was quite a journey searching for the "right" guitar, visiting many music stores and trying many different manufactures, models, and varieties of guitars until I found my Taylor guitar here! Now, in Tucson Arizona, we don't have anywhere near the number of music stores to choose from as there are in the DFW area, and the selection of guitars is even worse! Guitar Center had some more expensive Taylor's, and since I was on a budget, that crushed any chance of owning one of these works of art for me, so I thought? I had really wanted to purchase a Seagull guitar, and had played just about every model in the Seagull lineup, but something was missing? Then my wife's cousin introduced me to Mike Murphy, whose demeanor immediately put me at ease. Mike was patient and assigned one of his knowledgeable staff to assist me in my decision. Once again, his staff was patient and explained that choosing a guitar is like developing a relationship; it has to feel and sound right to the player for the relationship to work! After about an hour of playing guitars in my price range, and some not in my price range, it came down to the Taylor 114ce. It was just outside of what I had to spend however; Mike assured me that he would make it a good deal for me, AND HE DID! Thanks Mike! PS.
