Murphys was good! They sell Jamaican patties, lemonade, and coffee. They have Jamaican patties that are vegetarian, beef, and chicken. I had the vegetarian patty and I liked it. It was flavorful and filling. The vegetarian had a good curry flavoring to it that had a good burst of flavor. Overall, the patty was a pretty good price for the area and it filled me up. When I went, no one was in the store which was good, and it wasn't busy. The one employee at the store was friendly and informative. He was talkative and we chatted about the food and the different food stores near by. They have some seating outdoors, and not that much seating indoors. The store gave nice island vibes. Update: 2 stars A few things. I stopped by and in chatting with staff, my hunch was confirmed; it's not made with Jamaican curry. I've thought about this a few times and realized it made me uncomfortable when said staff said to me, "so you're the mfer who posted that?!" I admittedly laughed about it in the moment, but sincerely felt a discomfort that was awkward, and laughter felt safer. I'm a Black woman with both Jamaican & Guyanese heritage and so here's the thing: I'm offended to be "jokingly" spoken to that way, I'm offended that folks can borrow from a culture and mishandle the food's representation and I'm majorly offended that the patty's, on my second visit, were dry and the crust was crunchy. I was so happy to learn of a beef pattie place down in the East village. I rushed over there the very next day to get a taste. I look at this area as little Jamaica since there are 2 other Caribbean restaurants within 2 blocks. I walked in and noticed this large pink boxes, similar to those you see in a donut shop. I got intrigued and was anxious to run inside. Then I saw the menu... Beef, chicken, veggie.... $6 for 1 Wait, for ONE? I knew it was too good to be true! A beef patty is like an appetizer not a whole meal, why is the price so high 4 pack for $22. They also sell Lemonade but I bought a 4 pack with coco bread, my pockets were left on empty after that. I had veggie patty, coco bread, and a lemonade. I also had the hot pepper sauce. Veggie patty- the filling is flavorful. Slight spice. Chunky... not just puréed mush. The outside was flaky and pretty good. Smaller than I expected it to be Cocobread- also small to match the patty but soft and slightly sweet. It was a nice compliment to the patty and it was warm Hot pepper sauce- it was good. Not crazy spicy. Did make my lip tingle a little but I think I probably would have preferred the cashew cream sauce instead. The gentleman behind the counter suggested the hot pepper with the veggie. It was a nice addition but the creamy was calling my name Lemonade- delicious in first sip. I was really thirsty also lol as I drank it, it became a bit much. Would have been better in a larger cup with some water added too it. But definitely tasty and tart The employees had stepped up and told us it would be just a moment. He did come back pretty quickly and took care of us. The only thing is they were running low on the veggie patties and wouldn't have chicken patties for another 30 mins (we couldn't wait). I kept passing this shop and the patties looked so good I had to try them, especially because I've never had a Jamaican Patty before! I tried the vegetable patty, which is also vegan, and it was delicious! The veggies are spiced and soft but still have texture, and the pastry is so tender and flaky. One is the perfect snack or get two for a meal. Special shout-out to the spicy vinegar it's a must try. My first time having Jamaican patties in the city and what a great, flavorful snack! I went on a Friday night and there was a handful of people munching on patties outside but luckily no line when I went in (I've heard that most other people have run into lines which is understandable). I was able to try the whole range of patties: beef, chicken, and veggie as well as the coco bread. The most popular is the beef which I enjoyed but my favorite surprisingly was the chicken! Lots of flavor, very savory, clear chicken pieces but not overly heavy. Veggie was also a pleasant surprise but the mix of peppers, chickpeas, beans and more had a unique flavor. The menu is simple, but there's something for everyone (beef, chicken, shrimp, vegan). Their homemade lemonade is also pretty elite. In all honesty, I didn't taste the food because the one bitter girl working there ruined it for me. I have wanted to taste these beef Pattie's for months but this was the first time I had the opportunity to go. I grew up in the Bronx where great beef Pattie's were a norm. I walked a good hour to the shop but when I got there, the girl working was just really rude choosing to stare at me with a dirty look instead of a customary hello. Not really that tough (I work in a store so I speak from experience). I did purchase the patty but was not feeling it. I left it at the park for someone else to eat. Sad, I work for a huge conglomerate and thought Murphy would be great for one of their catered events. Instead, I'll be suggesting Lily's down the block. Their food is unbelievably great. Don't waste your time going here!!! How is that all you do is serve beef pattie's, chicken pattie's and veggie patties and you are not fully stocked on the only food you sell?!?! Customers should not have to wait 35 min for a damn beef pattie. If you have a ton of veggie Pattie's sitting ready for purchase but not chicken and beef what does that tell you?! I finally made it to Murphy's last night. I purchased 2 chicken, 1 beef, and 1 began patty. Unfortunately, they did not live up to the hype I have read and seen on Instagram, FB, and here. I am a "Yankee" in Caribbean parlance and am not considered an expert in Caribbean cuisine. But these paddies just did not meet the expectations I had. The curry chicken paddy was a disappointment. I wonder what kind of curry they use. It definitely was not the Chief curry powder I use in my attempts to make curry dishes. It wasn't even as good as the factory-made Golden Crust patties. The staff was great, attentive, and responsive. My apologies for being blunt. I drove about 15 miles to get these things and was not happy. To those folks who love them, continue to support Murphy's but I will stick to the local Caribbean joints for paddies and coco bread.
