We sat upstairs and had quick and friendly service. Appetizer was Cerviche. Delicious Hamburger with Swiss cheese and mushrooms. Delicious Chicken capresse sandwich. Delicious Everything had a highly quality handmade taste and feel. Definitely coming back again. Great experience

Stopped in at Mule Barn Tavern and was really impressed with the food and atmosphere. The lobster mac & cheese was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor -- the lobster pieces were fresh and tender, and the crispy breadcrumbs on top gave it a nice texture. Definitely a standout dish. The teriyaki sesame wings were another hit -- perfectly cooked with a sweet, tangy glaze and just the right amount of char. The sesame seeds added a nice crunch without overpowering the flavor. Service was friendly and the setting has that rustic tavern vibe that makes it a comfortable spot to hang out. Portions were solid, prices fair for the quality. The wait was a bit long thats the only complaint. Would definitely come back for the mac & cheese alone, but next time I'll try a couple more menu items. Great local spot in Highlands.

Came here for the first time for a wedding and it was a hit. The staff did such a fabulous job with everything, food was great and the space was nice. They were super accommodating. This tavern is located all the way down the Sandy hook beach with great views everywhere you turn. Would definitely come back for lunch or dinner.

Incredible restaurant built in an old army barn at Fort Hancock. Live music outside, cool AC inside to escape the heat, and a menu that delivered a nice verity for most anyone. The cocktails were delicious and well balanced while the service was quick and attentive. Overall great experience!

As an old-timer that used to come to Sandy Hook all the time when I was still young, dumb and fun... I'm not sure which part is more upsetting - the entrance fee is now $20 (I think we stopped coming when it was still $15 per car) or that there's now real/private businesses inside of the park. (Okay, it's the fact that you can no longer bring/drink alcohol to the beach. Boo!) Not only can you rent out the old military barracks (but those prices!) but here's a very hip and cool (and dare I whisper... trendy) restaurant firing on all cylinders. If you've ever spent some time over in PA - you know they're littered with those very cool brew-pub-eateries (Appalachian Brewing and Iron Hill Brewery come to mind) and that's what this place feels like. (Although I don't believe Mule Barn makes any of their own beer.) The place looks great, inside and out. There's a large staff constantly in motion trying to keep up. A good varied menu (food and booze). We were adventurous in ordering (salads to sandwiches to seafood) and thought they'd executed everything extremely well. (But those "Cape May" prices - like $9 for a pint of domestic beer and $30 for their lobster mac-and-cheese were a bit too rich for a cheap-o like myself. I mean... Sandy Hook is barely 'down the shore', right?!) A few times it felt like we were forgotten but we weren't in any rush. I'm easy to impress and I'd probably come back just to get another sandwich that would have one half of the bun being "branded". A cool far-off-the-beaten-path place to give a shot to.

We happen to be driving through Sandy Hook and came upon the Mule Barn Tavern. It was BUZZING!! Who knew? We didn't. What a great find. All done in reclaimed wood. Nice and roomy. We celebrated Pete's 'Back to Sneakers' event. Pete had an IPO and a Peach Mash. Lovely. Then we had appetizers which were delicious. Wings (yum), pork belly sliders (double yum) and calamari which was light and crispy with a bit of a bite. Also double yum. Our server was wonderful. The delivery of the food vs to the table was a bit slower than we would have liked. Bathrooms can use some work. We're pretty cold. Only one soap dispenser working. And paper towels were messed up. I checked the upstairs and it would be nice for a private party. Would have thought the windows would have been large to show water. But- A wonderful experience. Will definitely go again.

A nice spot all the way down Sandy Hook. Seasonal specials with fun cocktails and beers on tap. The room upstairs can be rented out for special events. Friendly staff serving all kinds of tasty dishes from burgers and chicken sandwiches to crab cakes and short ribs.

Enjoyed a delicious lunch on their outdoor picnic area. Fast and friendly service. Enjoyed the fish and chips, fresh and hot crispy beer batted flakey cod hit the spot. Wished the chips were the chunky British style but still enjoyed the thinner version. A pint of cold blue moon was the perfect compliment. Beautiful venue, lovely and clean ambience. View of the waterway was just perfect for a chill afternoon outside.

Awesome. Sat at bar and a great way to start summer. Bar manager (Christina) was great - engaging and some samples helped choose. So good food. Good service. Good weather and the Mrs for good company.

Have eaten here several times, but yesterday was the first day it was nice enough to sit outside. Each experience has been lovely. Gluten free items are clearly labeled, but be sure to mention that you need it GF as sometimes modifications need to be made. Tuna nachos are delicious!Service has been friendly and attentive and we would absolutely go back.

Good food and a good price. Place feels warm and welcoming and would definitely be nice sitting outside in the warmer weather but nothing special or over the top. Services was a little slow considering it wasn't that packed but nice place, would recommend for a bite to eat to just check out the place or if your out on the hook exploring and don't feel like going far to get something to eat!

The ambiance was so quaint and lovely - the sound of the waterfall and soft breeze made this such a relaxing way to spend the morning. The service was phenomenal - our waitress was so genuinely welcoming! Even with us being chaotic with 2 babies and a pup, she made us feel comfortable and was very helpful in ensuring we had a great experience.  For drinks, we ordered an iced mocha latte, which was delicious... we were tempted to get a second round. The syrups are all made in house! The sandwiches we got were wonderful - flavorful and came with fries or chips. Honestly, I would never get chips over fries and when the order came out I was disappointed in myself for not reading the description to know that my order came with chips; however, I was pleasantly surprised! Dare I say it, I might've preferred the chips over the fries! You must get the aioli on the side - so good! My toddler had the mac and cheese bites off the kids menu and they were good - plentiful and quite filling too! We'd 100% make the 1 hour trip back here.

It was early Sunday night and the bar was full but the dining area wasn't so we stayed in the bar. Service was excellent, the bartender came around and made sure we were comfortable, handed us menus and brought water. She told us the specials and shortly after our server came by. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of seafood on the menu. My picky girlfriend would have enjoyed some flounder or scallops but they only had a seared salmon and blacked shrimp. The Mrs. Got a burger and it was adequate, nothing to write home about. I got the chicken parm and it was ample and terrific. The tomato sauce was stellar! Sadly I wanted the scallops with risotto. This place has potential, the service is great, the atmosphere is fantastic, plus I know the chef has the chops from visiting his last place, the red store in Navasink. We'll be back but I'll be sure to check for seafood offerings before I go.

Well, I was finally able to check it out recently with a friend, and we both immediately fell in love with the place. The bar was at the end of a long parking lot and offered several different areas. There was a tented space with picnic tables, a sand-covered lagoon with couches and firepits, a pier with loads of dining tables, a small space for their frequent live music, a giant bar, and many other lounge chairs scattered about. The bar offered a variety of beers, wines, cocktails, and even mocktails. My Aperol Spritz was robust and well-balanced. We also ordered food from Cuts & Catch, which was a food truck and grill near the entrance to the bar. Their menu supposedly changes often, but they focus on both surf and turf items. When we arrived around 7:30 pm on a Saturday evening, a majority of the menu was already sold out. In some ways, that helped ease the selection process, but it also meant that a few of the things that had appealed to us (chicken kebabs, for instance) were no longer an option. We each ended up getting an order of the Fried Fish Tacos and shared a Shrimp Cocktail. The tacos were served in portions of three. The small corn tortillas were wrapped around large pieces of crispy, flaky fish tenders and a cabbage slaw. We both thought they looked basic, but they tasted phenomenal! The raw bar dish included five jumbo shrimp with a side of cocktail sauce. The shellfish were plumb and very fresh. We were still a bit hungry after these items, especially since we had spent the day at the beach, so we also shared an order of fries for the ride home; the thin, crisp fries were perfectly salted and simply delicious. The live music and views of the sunsetting over the marina made for a lovely atmosphere, and the excellent food and drinks made the experience that much better. We cannot wait to return!

We got there and were maybe one of 4 parties, we were using a picnic table and some chairs having drinks, our kids were playing with sand toys in between us and everytime someone moved from the chair this man would come and take the chair away (started out with 2 tables & 8 chairs, then he ended up Moving a hole table and 4 chairs away) we didn't mind we just moved to the teepee and the picnic table, the security guard came over and asked us to keep the kids sand toys under the teepee said the "owner said so" , if you've been here you know that the teepee is not roomy enough for kids to play with sand toys but we just said ok, moved all the toys & went about our day, we ended up moving all our stuff and just using the teepee A little while later my 11 months old small dinosaur toy (a squishy bath toy) was outside of the teepee and this man walked over and moved it and said you need to keep the toys out of the walk way.... It was in the sand not in the walk way , I said ok no problem sorry about that and went about our day, music started playing and it got more crowded, with an older crowd, so we understood the chair and the toy situation a little more (which they could of just said , we have a band playing and expecting a lot of people and we woulda understood) so the kids were into the music and wanted to see it and went under the tent and they were dancing and watching the band, for a good amount of time, I would 100% not complain if any of the kids were being annoying (understandably I know kids can be assholes lmao) the security guard came over and said "the owner said no kids under the tent" It's usually a VERY kid friendly place and I've never been made to feel so uncomfortable, we were with a good amount of people and definitely woulda got a lot of drinks and food at some point, our kids weren't being annoying they were playing by us and watching the band. I hate how mad this made me because I usually love this place so much, I even had to ask the bartender if it was new owners because I've never experienced this before and it makes me not want to go back which sucks

We ordered the fish tacos, birria tacos, and kettle-style potato chips--and every plate came out looking as good as it tasted. The fish tacos were beautifully assembled, piled high with crisp, fresh slaw that added the perfect crunch to the tender, flaky fish underneath. Light, clean, and balanced. The birria tacos were the star of the table. Rich, deeply seasoned meat tucked into perfectly griddled shells, served with a savory dipping broth that takes each bite to another level. Messy in the best way possible--and completely worth it. Even the kettle-style potato chips stood out. Thick-cut, golden, and topped with just the right amount of flavor to make them more than just a side--they held their own next to the tacos. It's the kind of place where you can tell care is put into both the food and the experience.
