I love Muji. I am not much of a shopper. But if I walk by a Muji and I have a moment, I will stop in. I try to resist impulse buys. I am confident, however, I will find something that appeals to my frugality. I do not know if Muji invented the concept of a brand that is not a brand, in the sense of not advertising itself, which ironically achieves its own iconic minimalist status. They have perfected it though. Last time, I got their 90 degree socks. I actually have concluded it is not a gimmick. I have some socks that slip off, at the heel, in particular if I wear them with runnig shoes. These do not. Everything I have acquired from Muji has gone into my regular rotation. The design is good, the quality is there, and the prices are not outrageous. So I commend Muji to you if you have a similar sense of not wanting to want, but being willing to browse. If I could rate Muji's customer service separately from its products, it would be one star. The problem isn't that mistakes happen--it's how Muji handles them. My order arrived with missing items despite paying oversized shipping and waiting days for delivery. Since then, I've been stuck in an endless cycle of apologies with almost no action. After nearly a week of emailing back and forth, I was asked to provide my order details again. Why? The entire email trail already contains everything they need. Instead of reviewing the case history, each representative seems to start from scratch, wasting the customer's time because they can't be bothered to read their own correspondence. Muji has mastered the art of apologizing without actually resolving anything. Every response is filled with sympathy and promises to "look into it," yet there is no urgency whatsoever to fix a mistake that was entirely their responsibility. Once they have your money, you're left waiting while your case sits in limbo. For a company that promotes quality and simplicity, their customer service is anything but. Poor communication, zero ownership, endless delays, and customers forced to repeatedly chase for updates. Paying extra for oversized shipping clearly doesn't translate to better service when something goes wrong. If you're lucky enough to receive your order intact, you'll probably have a good experience. But if there's a problem, don't expect Muji to treat it like a priority. Based on my experience, their customer service is all apologies and no accountability. read more

I am the biggest Muji stan since Martha Stewart said she uses their organizational tools. This one's particularly convenient since it's near Port Authority and even though it's Times Square, I never feel like it's overcrowded, even during the holidays. I feel like it's free aromatherapy because they have tons of diffusers going on but never overwhelming. I also appreciate this location is wheelchair accessible. The employees are helpful and never pushy. It has the usual stock of home goods and clothing for men and women, but I don't think this location is particularly large if you're looking for the full array of what Muji offers. read more

This Muji location is right by Times Square. It's not super big inside and is rarely crowded. There's always a bunch of shipment boxes lying around when I've been there. The store is pretty overstuffed with merchandise which makes it hard to walk around at times. The staff is usually attentive and will ask if you need help. Prices for things are reasonable and there's some interesting items. They also sell some clothes and some snacks as well. It usually smells good in here as they have their diffusers running (also for sale). read more

When I tried to use it Thursday it kept closing on me in the wind (not turning inside oiut) When I brought it back they refused to refund my money saying 'if you can't show me it closing on you right here (in the store) I cannot help you..' These days, there are several MUJI stores in Manhattan, but I definitely remember this particular store as being likely the first MUJI in NYC as I resided in NYC during those days (about 15 years ago). What's funny is I still have the plastic semi-transparent pen/pencil case I bought here. This location is south of Times Square at the base of the NYT building. I wouldn't compare it to Uniqlo, as MUJI is its own thing. It's worth a stop if you happen to be near Broadway and the 40s or 8th Avenue - it is situated two streets South of 42nd Street. read more

I find that the space is tight to walk through with all the objects but the aromatherapy that wafts throughout the store space makes it such a relaxing shopping experience. The location is great for people just passing through the city and their windows allow them to feature the best highlights. For example I recently stopped by because of seeing a water repellent puffy jacket that was on sale for $60 off! Even though they ran out of my size, I got one two sizes bigger which was oversized relaxed fit which "surprisingly works" because it was so light, airy and able to be layered. Even the vests and backpacks in there are water repellent! It was great to finally visit a physical MUJI store. We really enjoyed it! Great stationery and clothing selection. Also if you're traveling to midtown for work it has a great little travel shop for little containers and small things you forget at home. My only gripe is that I did buy a long sleeve knit that was literally next to this giant sign that said $40 Knit Long Sleeve... but at the cash register turned out to be $100. I learned about Muji when I needed some stationary and a friend recommended that try the NY Times building store. So I did and came to like the place and the simple notebooks and pens they had, but it was small so the selections were limited. The Muji store on 5th Avenue across the street from the main NY Public Library is much bigger and has a bigger selection Muji has a wide variety of items in simple clean Japanese aesthetic designs and in simple functionality. Some may say it has an Asian minimalist look to it. From their basic colors to their lightweight cardigans, smock dresses to the geometric soap dispensers, toothbrush holders, bags, bedroom, kitchenware, small containers, and other decoration items. After spending $30 on a small overpriced umbrella from this store (which was advertised as $15) out of desperation, the first time using the umbrella featured the handle falling off completely and the canopy never fully opening properly. Torn. Because they can have really good customer service.... didn't realize they had a dressing room, so I bought a shirt and prayed that it would fit. As I paid for it, I spotted the dressing room around the corner and asked if I could try on the shirt I just bought. And dang, it just didn't sit right. I hung my head and walked the 7 steps back to the cash register to return the shirt I literally bought 5 minutes prior. And they were so nice about it! They refunded it immediately. But... So here's the thing, they do have some nice clothes here, but they tend to run quite small. Women's sizes only go up to size L on many items, if not all. I'm definitely partial towards this Muji being it was the first one I was introduced to. Everything about the store is so relaxing and calming. You enter and see all the humidifiers and if you're a lunatic like me, you rush over to smell the new types of scents they have. They also have candles. WHICH IS AMAZING. My favorite thing about the store is the office supplies section. You know how every procrastinator loves office supplies. It creates the illusion of productivity. I LOVE everything about it. I'm a fan of thin ink pens. So the ink flows out super thin. Just my preference. With most gel pens, the ink flows out too thick. Not sexy. This place has different varieties of the pens. The Japanese people truly are innovative. There are so many small supplies that are just adorable and can easily fit into your bag without taking up too much space. They have a clothing section which ranges from scarves, gloves and even t shirts. There's a kitchen section with everything that the inner mom in you could want. Lmfao. Exchanging something without receipt is almost impossible. I was there today, just to exchange a small size sweater with medium size. The item was in a good shape. I bought only 3 days ago and I didn't use it. They said according their company policy they can't exchange anything without receipt. I totally understand and respect that but the way they treat their customer was super rude and careless. I'm sure in their policy also there is something about how to treat a customer. It makes me happy to just look around products here. If you like simple, minimalism style, here is your wonderland. They have everything from clothing, to kitchen ware, and office product. You name it, they have it. Most of the product are in plain colors (white, off-white) and very simple style. The price can be a bit higher on similar products, but you usually find good quality here. Some small items, I found hard to find others once I get use to Muji products. My favorite two are soap container, and black rubber band. Their soap container has a loose sponge layer, which eliminates all the problems of a conventional soap container. Your soap never stay in a wet surface anymore. Their black band has been my favorite since my first time use it. I have a lot of hair, many rubber band cannot hold my hair tight enough when wrap twice, but doesn't allow me to wrap it 3 times. Their black rubber band is perfect for me. It's also very durable. I've used my for almost two years, and it doesn't get loose. The staffs here are very nice and friendly. They are so patient to answer questions and check items for me. I hope Muji can open more stores around the country. read more

As I made my way through the crowded streets of Time Square, I noticed a girl rush pass me, Muji bag in hand. My eyes lit up like a Christmas tree and I followed her, asking where the nearest Muji was. "It's right ova there honey" she says and points to the store next to the New York Times. YES! What is Muji you ask? It is something like a Japanese version of The Container Store. Being the freakishly organized person that I am, this place was a goldmine. They also sell random useful items besides organization solutions. Some odd: recycled socks and a mini portable ashtray that you can keep in your purse. I picked that up for my smoker co-worker, not to encourage her habit, but because I knew she would actually use it and not toss it in a drawer never to be seen again. What I was looking for was makeup storage. They sell these acrylic 5-drawer organizers that at one point, I was unable to order online because they were in such hot demand. Every time I would visit their website, they were sold out. It was frustrating because I couldn't find anything like it back home. So I picked up two cases, much to the hubby's dismay because it took up about a 1/4th of our luggage space. When I was in line waiting to purchase, the gal in front of me was having a difficult time returning an item. Not sure what their return policy is like so you may want to ask before you buy. Prices are moderate, the store is immaculate, and service is good. I wanted to purchase the aluminum luggage with the muji stickers all over it but apparently it was for display only. Ah well. If you've paid a visit to the Muji flagship stores elsewhere in Asia, you're in for a disappointment. Things are on the pricey end considering the minimalism they're going for in their products. I wouldn't say Muji is known as a cheap brand even back at home, but prices here are definitely up there. Variety of products are on the limited end, understandably given the high rent. You're really just paying for the novelty of things being imported IMO. Take for example a pack of 10 or so cotton pads for make up removal. That pack alone cost about 3 bucks. Heck I can get a pack of 100+ for $5 at CVS. Does the quality of their products warrant the hefty price? Nope. The pens and stationary area has always been the most populated area out of the entire store. I like their bottles (containers), they are free of leakage and good for traveling, I love those stack-able containers, it save me so much spaces when it comes to my cosmetic bag, I can put all my creams in those container and put the big bottles in the refrigerator and keep them fresh instead of let it oxidate in room temperature and expose to air by open and close the bottle when I use them each time. Price at Muji isn't cheap at all, but the design is simple, chic and cleaver.
