Love it! I dropped in this place for a quick lunch after getting stabbed (vaccine woo!) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I've heard about it prior so I knew it was in the area and it was only a few miles away. A classic drive in, or what I would assume is classic since I'm not old enough to actually know. You drive up & they come to your car to take your order. A menu filled with burgers, fries, shakes, hot dogs etc. Once your order is ready they bring it out to you on a tray that hangs on your open window. If you need anything at all, just turn on your headlights. Very efficient. I'm all about "diner burgers" these days so I tried the double cheeseburger. Freakin delish and comes with a slice of bread in-between (kind of like big mac style). The Mug N Bug Special burger was also great- 1 patty but comes with bacon and is on toasted bread vs a bun. Nostalgic. Like stepping back in time in the best kind of way! It is a real deal drive- in : you can order and eat right in your car. We chose to take advantage of the picnic table seating area instead and avoid the crumbs in the car scenario. Picnic tables are under a shelter or out in the sun. Menus are on the table and when you are ready you simply push a button on the table to "call for service". Once we did a server came over and took our whole order - drinks and food. Had to try the housemade root beer -- so good. It comes in 16oz 24oz or 32oz... always go 32oz or you will regret it! We decided to get a variety: chicken tenders, fried pickles, mini corndogs, fried mushrooms, fries and a burger.. all in all very good. A few things we noticed that make this a drive-in and not just a standard restaurant. Drinks and food come out all together- Just know you won't have a drink to sip on while you wait. Look, the tenderloin sandwich just isn't my jam. The actual quality of the sandwich from Mug n Bun looks GREAT. The service at Mug n Bun was GREAT. The crinkle cut fries and root beer are DELICIOUS. But the tenderloin itself is just not tasty to me. I don't want to knock off too many stars because this is a personal preference, not a quality or service issue. Grew up on the west side of Indy so as I was driving through heading home to Chicago I wanted to stop. Food is as amazing as it has always been. Best root beer ever! Oh the old Mug n Bun...Indy's oldest and finest drive in! The root beer is the obvious choice of beverage and I like it that they also have diet root beer which is almost as good and there's something to be said about hanging that tray up on your window and waiting anxiously for your food to be passed back from dad in the front seat. Now, I'm the one passing the food back to my own kids. The prices still seem very fair to me and a pretty good value. Kids meals are priced right. I always stick to the basics with a loaded single cheeseburger and a side of onion rings. I end up hating myself most of the time because a regular order of rings is more than enough to share with someone else....but I never do! I eat the whole thing, minus one or two which I trade for a french fry or a bite of coney dog and then kind of sit there in the car sweating on the hottest day of the year wishing I hadn't eaten all that fried goodness. It's on the same level as gorging at the Indiana state fair. I'd roll up the window and blast some of that sweet AC but that big tray is sitting there...so I sit and sweat with my regrets. Try the dine in section! The tenderloin is not really my favorite so I never get it. The service has always been good and just know that you have to tip in cash! We have tried the Mug several different times but it is usually another year before we try it once more. This year we ordered 2 hot dogs, 1 fresh cut fries and 2root beers. We got 2 hot dogs that didn't even fill up the bun, 1 order of COATED "fresh cut fries", and they cost extra. Our 2 root beers served in the styrofoam cups with no opportunity to buy a half gallon or gallon to take home. We found a seat outside with full trash cans, unwashed tables and a nice bee hive of bees buzzing! We took our food home. It looks like an effort could be made to attract the bees away from the eating area. If you wanted more customers? They do have an option on a side building to go side down and eat if you don't want to eat in your car, but I figured for the 1st time you need to "real" or "true" drive up experience even if the weather is drizzling rain. I did notice several outdoor covered wooden picnic tables to enjoy on days when the weather cooperates. Having heard about Mug N Bun for some time from several people, I finally decided to give it a try. I didn't have lunch plans and finished work early so thought it was the perfect time to try it out plus I was very hungry and didn't want to wait to drive home for lunch. I couldn't recall what people told me they were known for so asked the friendly waitress and she was quick to reply that the pork tenderloin sandwich, onion rings and homemade root beer were some of their better known items. I quickly went with her recommendation and ordered that. Food came out fairly quickly and I was shocked how huge the servings were! I thought this place was really good! A great little spot by the Speedway. We went to the dine in one, as it was a pretty chilly day. The server was really friendly and helpful on menu suggestions. The vibe was really casual, as you might expect. The only music came from a small radio behind the counter. The kitchen is actually across the parking lot, which was interesting but didn't really effect us. The tenderloin was pretty good...I'd give it a solid B, maybe B+. It wasn't life changing, but I'd order it again. The onion rings were great and a huge portion! Hand cut and battered, and you could tell. Definitely my favorite of anything I tried. The coney dog was good, though I would probably get no cheese next time (I think it was just a slice of American). The coney sauce is house made and really good. A couple buddies got the hot cheese balls (which were good, but smaller portions) and fries (which I recommend with their seasoning, and are generous portions as well). There's a drive-in which is what they're known for and then there's an indoor restaurant as well as outside seating if you don't want to eat in your car.
