This address holds special meaning to my husband and I. We met there 20+ yrs ago when it was a bar called The Burgundy Room. So when we visited Springfield this past weekend and discovered not only was the building still there but another bar/lounge was there we just had to check it out and visit. This quickly became a favorite that we decided every time we are in Springfield we have to visit again. We went for after dinner drinks and dessert. Neither of which disappointed. The staff was very friendly and helpful with any questions we had. We started with cocktails which were devine. My husband had the Blackberry Bourbon Sour and then switched to beer. I had the Peanut Butter Cup and an Espresso Martini. We also enjoyed the Molten Lava Chocolate Fondue for dessert. Let me tell you this was so delicious and very filling for the two of us. About 8 years ago, when I was first discovering the Springfield scene, MudLounge emerged as one of my favorite spots. The service was great. I loved the decor, and they had a great selection of draft beers and unique cocktails. It was one of the spots that gave downtown Springfield its special vibe. That vibe was one of the reasons I eventually relocated downtown. But the service started getting progressively worse about 2018. The drinks came a little slower, orders would get messed up here and there. Ok, no big deal. I don't go to a sit-down spot if I'm in a hurry. And when I would get served the wrong drink, I just took it as an opportunity to try something new. The slow downward spiral continued, but I kept giving them chances. I know the service industry struggled coming out of Covid, and I figured the owner was aware of the service problems and would get them straightened out at some point. I would get my drink eventually, enjoy the ambiance, and visit with a friend or read. But I've finally been forced to face the sad truth. The service is now intolerable by even the most modest standards, and it won't get better until a disruption forces improvement. MudLounge apologists will tell you "Oh, service is bad at all downtown bars when school is in session," or "Service at all downtown bars has been like this since Covid." Nonsense. Go to most any downtown bar any time of night, and you will get average-to-excellent service from a usually-friendly wait staff. At MudLounge, on a good day, you'll be greeted by a server who's only moderately interested in your presence. On a bad day, you will be treated with downright hostility. On my second-to-last MudLounge visit, I sat at a hightop and ordered a beer from one of the nearby taps. I waited. And waited. And waited. 10 minutes passed. Then 15. Then 20. Still, no beer had been poured. Assuming my order had been forgotten and with no server in sight, I left. Fast forward a week later, I come in with a friend during a slow time. After giving our drink orders, the waiter rudely accused me of "walking out on your tab" a week earlier (I received neither a tab nor a drink) and said that he was going to be adding last week's drink to my tab. At that point, I was in no mood to stick around. I promptly canceled the drink order before the bartender could get started and paid for the drink I never received the week before -- plus the 30% tip the servers always preselect on their touchscreens, of course. Nonetheless, the waiter was incensed, apparently, that I didn't feel like sitting there further in light of his false accusations, muttering "pay for your sh*t" (after I literally paid for my sh*t) and "go drink somewhere else" (as I was literally headed out the door to drink somewhere else.) I'm a reasonable person, and I always want to give people opportunities to right their wrongs. I see negative reviews as an absolute last resort. As a professional courtesy, I emailed the owner to make him aware of what had happened, and to give him the opportunity to rectify the situation. He made clear that he wasn't interested. Looking through these Yelp reviews, it seems I'm not the only one who has had this experience. I see now-former customers singing MudLounge's praises, only to be followed up years later with a 1- or 2-star review after coming back multiple times -- expecting a smidgen of the experience that once was, but never receiving it. Here's hoping that the owner acknowledges his staff's service problems and takes steps to correcting them, or that MudLounge gets new ownership who will. I will be happy to go back and update my review when/if either of those things happen. Until then, I recommend giving your business to someone who appreciates it. read more

We've enjoyed this place over the years. Tonight was a bit different. The QR code menu prices are different than what they charge you. Not a bunch but $1.50 or so each off. Plus some item s we received happy hour pricing and others we did not. It was hard to say because they use electronic pads for your bill so it's not itemized. I guess my biggest hang up was a guy that brought his non-emotional support animal. Two of the two waitresses that were on duty stopped to welcome him and the dog. BTW, we were already waiting over 15 minutes to get our second drink. Our main waitress went and filled a carafe up with whipped cream and bent down to feed the dog. I watched both of them after they rubbed all over the dog. One went and hit the sanitizer without washing her hands before she went to serve drinks. Our waitress didn't wash her hands or sanitize before she started serving again. At the end of the day, I'm not going to frequent places that allow dogs in freely and allow them to run freely. read more

We swung in for some fondue because it's been a long time. We settled on the old favorite; the beer cheese blend. Our waiter was great, and our food came out quickly. I noticed right off it was smaller than before "about half the size." The cheese didn't taste the same either; clumpy with a odd taste; it seemed like the ingredients didn't mesh well. The sides to dip were few and far between. 4 pieces of bread, a couple carrots, a few tomatoes definitely not enough for 2 people, and at $13 way too expensive. Seems the beer prices went up too, but we didn't have any. We won't be visiting this "trendy" spot anymore, and price is exactly why we usually avoid downtown. Lately this has become one of my go to downtown spots to meet with friends for drinks or to even relax with a book and glass of wine. As a die hard Mudhouse Coffee drinker you'd think this would always be a go to for me I visited Mud Lounge for my first time this year. The vibe is very coffeehouseish with chill music, small tables and lounge seating areas with couches and seats and nice patio outside. Looking for dessert? Must try their fondue! My friends and I love it! Beer drinker or not... their selection of beer is HUGE! I've thoroughly enjoyed trying out all the different ones they carry. I somehow always end up here when I'm in town. It's downtown and right next to Black Sheep and the V hotel. So, if you are waiting in line for a table at Black Sheep and want a laid back place to grab a drink - this is the place. It's friendly, but nothing memorable about it. UPDATE: I have been back to Mud Lounge several times since my first visit, and without fail the service has gotten progressively worse with each attempt. Last time, the staff exhibited borderline contempt at the prospect of serving my group, which would be understandable if we were a bunch of rowdy, disrespectful drunkards who refuse to tip - but we aren't. The atmosphere, food and drinks are still on point, which is the only reason I'm not making this a one star review, but someone definitely needs to teach these guys how to treat patrons like something other than chattel. FIRST IMPRESSION: This place is so awesome, I was tempted to leave a bad review just so I could keep it a secret, but that would be selfish and unfair - not to mention pointless considering how ridiculously popular it seems to be already. I went back to Mudlounge recently when they reopened, and it was still the same ol' favorite bar of mine. I've gone here for years and the service was always great. The few times I've been since they reopened I usually had Shelby as my server, I think she's the newest. That being said, It only took me a couple visits for her to know I always order the same thing, she's a great addition to the Mudlounge staff. But don't forget the badass Jason behind the bar either, he's been there the longest and knows his shit. They've got the best beer selection, possibly in all Springfield. The Mud Lounge is a Springfield downtown institution. It's been around for a decade and has consistently provided quality drinks and food. I love their huge selection of premium and hard to find beer, along with an extensive martini menu. And if you're feeling frisky (and looking somewhat hipster-ish), the bartender just might make a special concoction just for you. (It happened to me during my college years, it was amazing, and I still relive that memory). Their appetizer/food selection is great and comes in generous portions. I love their crab dip in a bread bowl with lots of vegetables and crackers. Just make sure you get there early in the night since this place fills up very quickly - by hipsters and young local professionals alike. Also, beware of the owner's pugs. (I think there are 9 of them). They will slobber and poop on your shoes. Other than than, this place is stellar. read more

I like to have a smoke with my drink, thanks. 2) Nice homey atmosphere in an old brick building downtown, comfortable sofas, intimate little cocktail tables, lots of nooks and crannies to find a comfortable place to lounge. , Yes, it's a true lounge atmosphere so the term Lounge in MudLounge is not just B.S. 3) The bartenders know there Sh_ _t. When I go in there asking for a certain variety of beer they are truly knowledgeable about the choices they have and really are interested in accommodating the beer-snob in me. They will also customize a martini for me, another plus. The Mudlounge is a lounge, it doesn't try to be everything to everybody. Recently hit up the Mud Lounge for a birthday weekend trip to Springfield with some friends for a "Party Like You're Still in College" night. After dinner, we headed to Mud Lounge to get our drink on, and it did not disappoint. I jumped straight into my free birthday shot and splitting a fish bowl with a friend. The fish bowls have shrunk since it became my first legally purchased alcoholic beverage (in 2006), but it's still just as delicious. I also enjoyed some shots from my fine friends - all delicious, and everyone seemed to have a good time. My only regret is that we didn't get any fondue, but like I said, we came straight from dinner. If they haven't changed anything since I graduated in 12/2007, it's amazing and highly recommended. Super Bar! Since i live approx 150ft from the front door this is my main hang-out any day after 4 p.m. They spread over 30 imports on bottle and some awesome Single Malt scotch. Staff is very friendly, the music is great and at a volume that does not make work or conversation impossible. It's easy to hold a convo in here and never too loud (unless it's First a Friday Art Walk). Tons of young hipsters but as long as that doesn't turn you off, then it's a great little bar. This place has a lot of atmosphere. Even if there wasn't a soul in the entire bar, it would still be cool. Wood floors, dark walls, dim lights. It's somewhere between a coffee shop and a lounge, like some place you might find in Westport in KC. Great. The crowd was pretty cosmopolitan too. Young 20-30 something hipsters, a couple of lesbians, professional types, middle aged MSU employees, out of town visitors (of which I would be the later). Good cross section of Springfield I guess. It can get noisy when it's crowded, but not so bad that you can't carry on a conversation. The noise is just part of the experience. Prices were good too. Couple of glasses of wine a few beers and the tab was less than $20. If I was a Springfield native, this would be my local. Recommended. read more

Given the very subjective tastes of coffee lovers, I don't go too deeply into the quality of the product in my reviews unless it's in the form of a warning. This is not the case for the Mud House; if you like coffee, you'll probably find something on their menu you like (it's the same people as the nearby Mud House), including options with various liqueurs. First, know up front that though they serve coffee, this is a bar/lounge at heart, so past a certain point in the evening, you must be over 21 to get in. Not a great thing for the younger set, but it can be a blessed oasis for us old curmudgeons who value a place to chat that is devoid of high schoolers. There are different types of seating, including tall chairs at the bar, standard restaurant two- and four-tops, a pair of long tables, and couches/lounge chairs with coffee tables where you can share a cheese platter or fondue. There is also outdoor seating in the back. Depending on the size of your party and whether there is an event going on downtown, you might want to show up early since it can be interesting finding seating late in the evening. I mostly get coffee, but friends have ordered beers and cocktails, and I've yet to hear a complaint about the selection (beer) or quality (cocktails). Both are a shade on the expensive side, but no more than pretty much anywhere else downtown. Unless you plan on walking up to the bar, I would not recommend going to this place for a quick drink if you have a deadline. After all, it is a lounge, and depending on how many people are there, it might take several minutes for someone to take your order. That said, I've never experienced what I consider bad service, and the waiters/bartenders/baristas/whatever they are have almost always been notably pleasant and friendly. The atmosphere depends on the crowd, but tends to stay on the relaxed side. Lighting is kept low, and the walls are all exposed brick with subdued and modern-ish decoration. Background music is kept low enough to stay in the background, and while the place can get a bit loud when it's standing room only, it doesn't morph into a stereotypical college town bar. There have been times the ambient noise made conversation more difficult, but those occurrences have been rare. Overall, it is one of my favorite Springfield places to get drinks and hang out with a few friends or simply read while enjoying a good coffee. read more

Oh, how I love the Mud Lounge. It was my favorite bar when I was going to college in Springfield. I recently went back for the weekend and we hit up Mud Lounge with a big group of friends. It was a Saturday night, and our server took good care of us - which is saying something for a large group of people on a Saturday night. I love their cocktails, especially the Hypnotiq Martini. So my bf and I came to Springfield to hang out with some of his friends about a month ago. Mud Lounge is a very laid back place with lots of couches and it's just great to lounge around in here! They have happy hour Monday-Saturday from 4-7pm and hey also have specials on each day as well. Since we were here for happy hour, I decided to make use of the $2 off Martinis! Normally, the fruity martinis are $8 each! I decided to try the Bubble Fight Martini.......yes I giggled when I saw this on the menu, but it was so delicious! And it was blue! It consisted of Parrot Bay Passion Fruit rum, Hynotiq, pineapple juice, and it was then topped off champagne. I loved it! Wish I could get it again because it had just enough alcohol for me where it was the perfect balance between where I could taste every different ingredient and the right amount of alcohol. I definitely want to come back and try another drink here! Pros: - service was great! The waitress always came by to check on us - drinks were delish and well priced Cons: - at one point, I felt like the waitresses were trying to get us to leave since we weren't ordering anymore drinks....or maybe it was because of the people waiting by the door that would just keep staring at us the whole time Why I gave it a 4... Mud Lounge is by far the best place to get a drink in Springfield for many reasons. I will defer to a list format for better readability: 1. Atmosphere: Wood, brick, dim lighting, hot staff, hipster music, professor patrons, etc. I could go on, but your head might explode from too much coolness. 2. Location: Downtown Springfield is the best location, as it's central to everything, and the area is super walkable. We will often stop here after dinner to enjoy an alcoholic beverage, and then go grocery shopping. All within walking distance. Best. Idea. Ever. 3. Martini Menu: Freaking awesome drinks. Can't list them here, you'll have to see for yourself the extensive menu. 4. Scotch Selection: My hubby is a scotch connoisseur. They have the most extensive selection in the Ozarks. Believe me, we've looked everywhere. This is the place. 5. Beer Selection: Again, we are beer snobs, as well. They have tons to choose from. Good selection, too. Go here for beer! 6. Coffee: Yes, Mud Lounge is affiliated with Mudhouse. Amazingly, they both have a full menu of coffee. And here is the best part: you can get all sorts of spiked coffee drinks. So, the next time a Snowpocalypse comes to the Ozarks, be sure to stop in and get a Mocha with chocolate liquour, as this will warm you to your toes! Then you can watch the snowflakes come down from inside with content, as you will be drinking the best hot drink in town! 7. Drink Specials: Happy hour 4-7pm weekdays. Drink specials everyday, too. Awesomeness of this place just doubled. I think it is obvious that I would recommend this place. So, yeah, you should go. read more

When I originally wrote my review I thought it was for the Mudhouse on South Avenue, so like a fool I had to go to Mud Lounge to actually give it a review. So, the Mud Lounge is a pretty chill lounge with live jazz on Wednesday nights, although I'm guessing they probably have it on other nights as well. They had a well-stocked bar, and even had a drink called the "Fish Bowl" for $12.50. I saw someone get a blue drink that came it what looked like a fish bowl, so I'm assuming that's what it was. The vibe here is laid-back, and the thing I love most about it is that it's non-smoking! Horray! My only real complaint is the price of the drinks and the fact that the music was too loud for the environment. I suppose it's worth a visit if you're into jazz. read more

OK, so being from the East Coast and living in Seattle (both places having much different coffee from here), I've got a different perspective from a typical middle American. While I'm not a huge fan of the coffee they roast in pure form (a shame, really), they generally use high quality ingredients for the various mixed ones and the result works well... chocolate cures all of the coffee's shortcomings... Speaking of chocolate, had the fondue? It's delightful... and when I went, well... the serving size was enormous and that was a-ok with us. The setting is awesome and I honestly love the age restriction... it keeps teenage annoyances at their other place while adults can get all the same and more here... It's Springfield's best, for sure, even if that doesn't say much. (Sigh, too bad Juice and Java went under... that place had the best fruit drinks ever, along with great coffee and live jazz...) read more

What a gem in downtown Springfield. I wish there was a place like this in my neighborhood in Washington, DC. The scotch whiskey selection is impressive, the beer list respectable, and the martinis are inventive. The prices are good for the selection and value that you get. The vibe is coffee shop sophisticated but without pretense. I was there on New Years Eve and the staff handled a busy night very well. They were attentive and always ready to take our order for the next round. The noise is minimal, the music isn't overwhelming, you can absolutely have a great conversation without screaming across the table. I plan to head back next time I'm in Springfield. read more
