Soft shell crab sandwich
marina s.

Update: another great visit to Mudbugs. Thus time I brought my friend from Ohio to have a lunch. She ordered clam strips, said they were quite delicious. I ordered a soft shell crab sammich, also was lovely , juicy and full Of flavors. Wasn't too crazy about gator bites, very were very small , but had decent flavor to them. Overall, good visit, friendly and attentive service by the upstairs bartender: )

We had a nice lunch at this new to us New Orleans style restaurant. There's patio seating, downstairs seating, and upstairs seating. You can see the NOLA theme throughout with iron railings and decorations and the menu. We had good service. She told us that they are known for their oysters. We ordered a dozen chargrilled oysters. They had Parmesan and garlic butter on them. They were wonderful. We also had an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. They came with a horse radish sauce. They were okay. I prefer a flour coating vs cracker meal. After those two items, we had a half order of dessert beignets. Served hot with a lot of powdered sugar, these were delicious. We look forward to trying more of their menu.

My wife found this place on Sanibel Island which features Grilled Oysters...our destination lunch stop for today. They have rebuilt and come come back from a devastating hurricane. Our server showed us how high up on the wall the water had risen during the storm. The place has a welcoming New Orleans decor and vibe. Lots of specialty cocktails, including the infamous Sazerac. (We visited the Sazerac Museum when we were last in New Orleans) I chose a draft Stella to go with our meal. We looked over the menu, and yes the Cajun Grilled Oysters were our choice. We shared a dozen along with an order of fried Green Tomatoes. The oysters were delicious. The tomatoes had a heavy breading. We finished off our lunch with a half order of Beignets which were spot on delicious! Deserves repeated visits for sure!

Food was great, mufalta sandwich, crab stuffed shrimp, jambalaya, blackened fish bits. All were excellent. Service was very quick, live music

19 March 2026 My friend and I went to Mudbugs Cajun Kitchen for dinner. Naturally the place is crowded, and LOUD ! ( snowbirds) Interesting decor. NOLA themed food , Cajun style , spicy. I had the crab cakes ( spicy ) My friend had the Grouper. This place is packed. A line outside waiting to get into the joint. Good thing we arrived early. No waiting and plenty of room in the free parking lot. As we left we noticed the parking lot was full. The restaurant has a wrap around balcony with outside seating on the second floor with outside patio dinning , also wrap around. This place is all filled up. Yup , come early if you don't want to wait for a table. The food is good. The place is nice. The customers are mostly seasoned citizens. Our server , Isabella , was attentive , polite and friendly. She explained everything on the menu including the special of the day. We might just make a return trip here. But ... we will come early !!

Happy Hour oysters

We went to Mudbugs for the happy hour oysters and they did not disappoint. Chilled and flavorful. The service was quick and friendly. $3 local drafts were a bonus. Restaurant had a great New Orleans feel.

What a cool place. We spent the morning on captiva beach and spotted this place coming. We had an amazing lunch for $60. The bartender was great. Service was fast

Peel and Eat Shrimp Boil at Budbugs, Sanibel Island
Julie C.

I phoned first and asked if they allowed dogs and was pleasantly told we'd be welcome in the outdoor "dog park" area. Great little spot! We started with Crab & Corn Bisque, delicious! Then on to Peel and Eat shrimp boil which was amazing. Plenty of shrimp, some as large as six inches long. We really didn't have room for dessert, but a lady at a table next to us suggested the beignets. Hot and tasty with raspberry sauce, caramel, and chocolate. This is a restaurant I would love to keep coming back to until I tried everything on the menu. It all sounded so good.

Pina Colada
Jessica F.

Definitely one of the best piña colada's I've ever had it was creamy and sweet without overdoing it. This is a large, open two floored space was an indoor outdoor bar upstairs and with outdoor seating. The service was attentive and spectacular. Had my first boudin balls experience. They were perfectly fried and moist in the center. Shared the blackened shrimp platter plate. The shrimp were well seasoned and tender. Got sides of the dirty rice, jambalaya and Maque Choux while good were not my absolute favorite. When return here again to try more menu items and get the pina colada again.

The Shrimp Boil was loaded with Shrimp and was served up with potatoes, corn on the cob, and potatoes....and I devoured all two pounds (Take that Man vs Food!)...I definitely need to get lessons on the correct method to use on peel & eat shrimps though! Terri ordered the Blackened Chicken Salad and said it was just spiced to her liking! The Sanibel Breeze and The MudBugs Mojito were nice finishing touches. Bryan, our server was fantastic and gave me some tips on dealing with the Peel&EatShrimp method...but as I said it needs a little work yet. The New Orleans decor was perfect and the live music from upstairs wasn't too loud and so added to the lively atmosphere.

Very busy Not an overloaded menu, but good choices Lots of specials (including happy hour deals) Live music Pricing is a little steep but the food is quite decent I loved the Fried Green Tomatoes BLT

Kerri E.

Went here for dinner, and the parking lot was packed but there was plenty of seating inside and outside. We were seated upstairs, right between the musician (was good but so loud we couldn't hear each other or the server) and the restroom (one person unisex so anyone waiting was staring at us) They have a happy hour menu with drink specials and appetizer desks 3-6. Our server was Daniel who took a bit to come to the table initially, snd forgot to bring our drinks and we had to ask him for them as the appetizer was already half gone , but he did a good job otherwise. We got the fried pickle fries that were great. I had the grilled shrimp platter with mashed red garlic potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Everything was delicious but the vegetables were cold. Portions were good sized and prices were Island reasonable. Will add this to our rotation list for when we're here.

Jumbo shrimp creole. So good you and a generous portion.

4.5/5. Food 5/5. Service 5/5. Ambiance. Authentic New Orleans decor. Super fun with Mardi Gras beads included. We stopped to sample a few small bites and were not disappointed. We ordered the charbroiled oysters and were so good, we ate up before I could snap a photo. Perfectly cooked. The shrimp 'oh-my,fries a margarita and an orange cream cider in the can. I definitely recommend and wish there was more space in my tummy to try more.

It is without question a must do, when you're here. My family and I have been coming here for many years, and it only has gotten better each time. This location has two floors of seating, more importantly two bars you can sit at. After checking in with the hostess, our wait was only about twenty minutes. Once seated at our table all of us were ready to order. For drinks we ordered two rounds I got the Dark and Stormy for both rounds(Gosling's Black Seal Rum mixed with Gosling's Ginger Beer & a squeeze of lime) my ordered a mango and coconut mojito; my sister in law ordered a rum runner. We all loved our drinks. Drinks here are always made perfect. For an appetizer we shared the calamari. The breading was light and the calamari was tender. For entrees my sister in law and I ordered the Deep Water Mahi Mahi(Hand-cut mahi-mahi seared in sweet soy sauce, placed on a jasmine rice stir fry with a tropical vinaigrette) This dish is my favorite meal here. The mahi was tender, the sweet soy sauce and the tropical vinaigrette ties everything together. My wife ordered the Yucatan Shrimp with a side of jalapeño cheese grits. She gave me two thumbs up. My father in law Grouper Sandwich (Fresh grouper grilled, blackened, or fried. Served with Doc's tartar sauce on a freshly baked roll) He ordered his fried. He loves the grouper sandwich here and usually gets it. Again, this is another place we will always comeback to.

The quality definitely slipped from that point when they moved 10 years ago. I never really understood why it continued to be such a popular spot. If you don't believe that we my previous review that's over 10 years old lol We returned for the first time since Ian 4 years ago and while the service is still very touch & go-our server seemed to be having a rough night. To be fair she had the table next to us that was like 12 seemingly college age kids who were really loud & obnoxious & who were also annoying us so maybe that's accounts for her mood. The food and drinks have really turned around. We came in the first night of our trip just to "check that it still sucks" but knowing it's an easy walk in without much of a wait in the September off-season and we were tired from all day spent in the sun & wanted it to be easy. But we were so surprised. The food was excellent. Fresh. Not clearly reheated (a common thing in the past). I asked for a mojito made with coconut rum rather than traditional rum and that kind of seemed to confuse our server. To be fore they have a coconut mojito that has a coconut cream in it but that's not what I wanted. After a bit of back & forth it came out as ordered and delicious (highly recommend trying it made this way-you'll never go back) We enjoyed our meal so much we actually went back for a midday drink and snack later that week. Unheard of for us. Had a really lovely conversation with a bartender who's been there forever about the state of things at the island. He remembered my drink order so I'm apparently notorious now lol. And once again the food orders this time was so good and fresh and hot (very hot-beware of you order fish fingers) So very pleasantly surprised! Whatever you changed in the past 4 years, keep it up! Where a lot of places seem to have gotten worse since Ian you guys improved on n a huge way and we look forward to coming back now

We arrived as a party of eight without a reservation and because our group wasn't all there yet, we weren't seated right away. That was understandable, so we had a drink at the bar next door while we waited. Once we were seated, Michelle, the hostess, was lovely. She even asked whether we were celebrating, which we were, we had two birthdays in the group. Unfortunately, the service went downhill from there. Our server, Husham, seemed annoyed to be serving us from the start. He took our drink order and walked away before we could order appetizers. When he brought the drinks, he again tried to leave without asking if we were ready to order. We had to stop him to even get appetizers ordered and then waited about 20 minutes before he returned to take our dinner order. Throughout the meal, we had to ask for water refills, condiments and attention and no one checked whether we wanted more wine. The food arrived lukewarm at best. The manager brought it out and snapped at me when I tried to help place the plates, saying, "It's in order." When I told him my meal was cold and asked if it could be remade, he did so and the replacement came out piping hot. We appreciated that and the complimentary cheesecakes for the two birthdays, but those gestures didn't make up for the rest of the evening. At the end, the server had handwritten a mandatory tip and total onto our credit card slips without explaining the gratuity. When my husband spoke privately with the manager about the service and the bill, the manager argued with him and blamed the problems on our not having a reservation. The restaurant was about half full by then. As we were leaving, the manager came back to our table to continue the argument. I explained the cold food and the repeated requests for water, but he insisted we had never told him the service was bad, even though he had been present for some of those issues. He mentioned a $25 gift card, but by that point, an apology and some understanding would have meant far more. We spent nearly $400 for a very disappointing dinner. Michelle was kind, and the replacement meal was hot, but the poor service and the manager's response overshadowed everything else.

Next up shared appetizers of smoked fish dip & crab cakes. I usually dislike crab cakes, but I wanted to eat all of them. The smoked fish dip was delicious too & whoever thought of frying the saltines is a genius! For our meals we each got a lunch for dinner platter which was plenty of food with the accompanying house made chips & super ripe fruit. Two of us got the coconut shrimp. They were large, fresh & delicious, very heavy on the batter. The pineapple dipping sauce was perfect with them. Two in our party got salmon & said it was excellent. They ate every bite of it. One of us devoured his lobster roll with great enjoyment. The only non- seafood eater had what he described as a really good burger. He's like Mikey from Life cereal, he hates everything...so that's very high praise for the burger. For dessert we shared both the chocolate cake & key lime pie. I usually don't like Key Lime pie because it's almost always too sweet. But theirs is amazing. Dense, creamy & very tangy, with grated lime zest all throughout the pie. The cake was delicious too. There wasn't a bite of anything left. The ambience is great. Very nautical with lovely views. The exterior is very pretty, & inside it is cozy, casual & approachable. The a/c works really well too. The servers were all cheerful & the other diners seemed to be enjoying themselves. It was such a great overall experience. Highly recommend!

The night we went must have a been a good night since it was not very busy. We do usually go for lunch but decided to do dinner this year. My family is very traditional and know what we like. We started with clam chowder and the garlic bread with marinara. The clam chowder, OMG this is so creamy, delicious, thick and so yummy. It's almost like a sauce it's so good. It is our favorite clam chowder around! The garlic bread is also delicious, it is crunchy, garlicky and delicious. If you want the marinara it does cost extra and honestly it is good but you can live without it. We actually dipped the garlic bread in the conch chowder. I've also tried the conch chowder also very good but very spicy. I ordered my absolute favorite dish, which is the steamer pot. It's 2 dozen steamed clams, in a steamer pot which comes with butter to dip. I think on its own, you might be hungry but adding the soup its a perfect meal. The steamer pot is actually on the appetizer menu. These clams are so delicious, served hot, with old bay. Honestly I could eat double! My mom ordered the fried shrimp and my sister ordered the buffalo shrimp. They both liked it but were not thrilled with the breading. The breading on both was very sweet and very strange for fried shrimp. My husband ordered the mahi tacos and where he loved the flavor and taste, the portion was very small for the price. He only got 2 and served with a small side of rice and beans. He enjoyed it but said he would not get it again. I do feel this is worth going. I think their prices have increased since re opening and portion sizes have decreased. My family strayed from their usual items and did not overly enjoy it. Next time they said they would stick with what the know is good. The vibe here is very chill and laid back, almost like you are in the hull of a ship. Its a very chill spot. Lots of beer selections as well. I definitely think you should add it to your list to check out.

Every seat in the restaurant was filled, which tells you everything you need to know. Make a reservation because this place is incredibly popular. The service was outstanding from start to finish. Our server was warm, attentive, and somehow managed to provide exceptional service despite the restaurant being completely packed. The entire staff made our last night on the island feel special. We forgot to take photos of the appetizers, but trust me, don't skip them. The fried green tomatoes were the unanimous favorite at our table and an absolute must-order. Crispy, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. We also ordered the conch fritters, which our family always seeks out whenever we're in Florida, and these were honestly some of the best we've ever had. The crab cakes were delicious as well, but the fried green tomatoes and conch fritters definitely stole the show. For my entrée, I ordered the Quinoa Steak Salad, and I was shocked by the size. The portion is enormous and could easily be shared by two people, or even serve as a family-style salad for three or four. The steak was perfectly cooked, and the combination of quinoa, avocado, fresh vegetables, and cheese made it both hearty and refreshing. Several people at our table ordered the evening special, the blackened snapper over mushroom risotto, and it was phenomenal. The snapper was perfectly cooked, flaky, and full of flavor, while the creamy mushroom risotto complemented it beautifully. It was easily one of the standout dishes of the evening. The honey glazed salmon was another favorite at our table. The braised short ribs were rich, tender, and beautifully presented. One person in our group ordered the stuffed lobster and thoroughly enjoyed it, mentioning both the flavor and the generous portion size. The fish tacos were good, but with so many exceptional dishes on the table, they simply weren't the standout. Between the exceptional food, generous portions, outstanding service, and lively atmosphere, this was the perfect way to end our week on Sanibel Island. It's easy to see why every table was full. There's numerous tv screens to watch all the games - some booths even have their own screen. Aside from the sports decor, The Sanibel Grill has a very similar menu to Timbers Restaurant next door - I'm pretty sure the two are one and the same and share the same kitchen. I ordered the Grouper Fish tacos. You can get them blackened, fried, or grilled. I opted for fried. Note that the Sanibel Grill is known for their signature cornflake crunchy batter - but the grouper fish tacos are the lightly breaded bites and not cooked in their signature batter. The grouper was nicely cooked - tender and delicate bites. They used corn tortillas, which didn't fall to pieces while eating, but they were pretty flimsy (it was easy for a grouper bite to roll out). The tacos are served with rice pilaf topped with black beans which was on the bland side (nothing to write home about). I would've liked a hit of lime to add to my tacos, but the waitress never came back to check on us. Service is minimal. This is bar service all around. My friend ordered the combo basket (Grouper and fried shrimp) and comes with a side of fries and cole slaw. You can hear the crunch - I can see why it's their signature. My sister ordered the shrimp scampi with rice pilaf (she was hoping for pasta but that was not a side option - it's either rice pilaf or potatoes - smashed, French fried, or sweet potato fries). It also came with fresh green beans. The shrimp were nicely cooked and super buttery. She also ordered the crab bisque which was creamy and had good crab flavor, but I wouldn't say it was overloaded with crab meat. We finished the meal with a slice of Florida's signature key lime pie. The slice was small but had giant key lime flavor. It was very sweet but this was my favorite key lime pie slice from our whole trip. The Sanibel Grill gave us average food and average service.
