So we decided to have a little shrimp boil. Shrimp is my absolute favorite thing to eat. I was looking for a great place to get some fresh gulf shrimp at a good size for my shindig. I hopped on Yelp and this place popped up with great results. You can get cooked seafood, steamed, fried, boiled, what have you. The best part is they have a market where they sell fresh seafood. I'm talking crawfish, shrimp, all kinds of fresh fish. You can buy them fresh and ready to go , or they will cook it for you. They will even dehead shrimp for you and peel the shrimp after they boiled it for you for an up charge. They also sell items you need for your boil such as crab boil, and other seasonings. The atmosphere here is fun and festive a very Cajun New Orleans feel. Fun Cajun music and decor everywhere. My husband and I came in and split the fried shrimp / catfish lunch plate. We both ate till we were full and had fries leftover. The portions are huge! I really want to come back and try some of the steamed baskets because it smelled so good. If you're getting a Something that needs cocktail, tartar or melted butter make sure you order this with your meal as they are $.25 each and do not come with the plates. I had to go dig $.28 out of the car for my cocktail sauce. They do not have fountain drinks just bottled drinks and some yummy looking icy options. Nice place for a fried "anything" plate. My wife and I shared a lunch combo plate of fried shrimp and catfish. It was very good. The batter was light & crunchy, as opposed to the dark oily fry you may be expecting. They provide ketchup AND Tabasco sauce at each table. Which is nice, because Tabasco is a "make or break" item in my book. They cook to order, so you'll have a 15 - 20 minute wait. The lunch size was $10 and we had more than enough to share. As for drink options, there is no soda fountain. You can either buy a bottled drink or they have a few slushee flavors. The ambiance is definitely "New Orleans touristy." Deep South swamp scenes painted on the wall and your typical zydeco music playing in the background. I actually enjoyed the music, 'cause I roll that way. My work trip to New Orleans was scrapped due to the pandemic but I got to try most of the food I wanted to eat there in Mobile! Very similar cuisines. My husband and I split a fried shrimp po' boy with fries. It was so good! Overflowing with shrimp and even better when you add the tomato and lettuce they provide on the side. It was a little dry, I'm not sure if it usually comes with Mayo but ours did not. I generally prefer less in the condiment department so it was fine with me. Fries were delicious as well. The portion feeds two easily. The cashier was super sweet. They were very careful with how they served the to-go food ensuring it wasn't crushed or soggy. That was appreciated. The bathrooms were in a good condition. There is ample seating inside to eat and lots of benches for people waiting for takeout. It looked like a popular place. Stopped here on our way back to Texas on July 17. After turning away from three seafood restaurants because of 2-3 hour waits, we found this gem. There was no wait and I was worried that was a reflection on the food but no ma'am! We all ordered a different combo of fried items, shrimp, crab fingers and crawfish tails. The portions were huge! Don't get me wrong, but their crawfish is the bomb here! Besides crawfish, the lunch special, 6 inch po boy is delicious. They pile on the shrimp, making it impossible to actually close the sandwich ! Therefore you would have to pick at the sandwich and eat some of these yummy shrimp. I've also recently ordered the fried oyster lunch special! The oysters tastes fresh and crunchy. It's almost like you can taste the ocean! Not over cooked like some other places. Just down visiting a friend in mobile and we decided to try this place. The fried was closed by the time we got there so we ended up going with a shrimp combo. I got 2 of the shrimp combos which were 5.99 and came with a lottttt of shrimp along with a sausage, corn, and potatoes. Keep in mind there is a 2 dollar cooking fee which I don't know if that's common or not but I'd much rather just see them raise the prices all by a dollar instead of doing that. We ended up both getting gumbos with rice which was an amazing choice. Thick gumbo with a copious amount of toppings. Yum! Again, adding a tiny cup of rice cost 50 cents or so. Lastly, we both ended up getting blood dragon slushees which we agreed were probably up there in favorite slushees. Overall, the food was a good amount, prices were pretty good. I get my food and I start eating and EVERYTIME I bite into a shrimp I get a mouthful of DIRT! I love seafood and this has never happened! I ordered 2 pounds and wasted $38 on something I can't finish because it's disgusting! Shrimp should be soft and not crunchy! I'm pretty sure this place didn't clean their shrimp properly before giving it to me. I will never eat here again especially since I called them and they won't refund my money. My first visit to Mudbugs came when I was visiting Mobile for a week for work and was caught by the cool name and colorful signage out in front. With a place that looks this cool, the food must be amazing....my thinking was correct. After that initial visit, I knew I would be back each time I made it to Mobile. Back in Mobile working through the holidays I had my family come join me for Christmas and Mudbugs was on the busy holiday schedule. I must admit I over-ordered but who can complain about leftovers when the food is so amazing. My kids were in heaven when 2 huge foil trays came to the table filled with crab legs, shrimp, potatoes, sausage and corn all covered in buttery goodness. We ate till we couldn't move that day but all were satisfied and they all said they wished we had a place like Mudbugs where we live.
