Guava sorbetto

Called ahead earlier in the day and got a table for 4 people outside on a Saturday night. I tried: + Big island switchblade cocktail + Palolo penicillin cocktail + Chicken long rice croquettes + Fried ulu + grilled octopus + kahala (Kanpachi) + Handcut pasta with venison ragu + Ume guava sorbetto Cocktails were alright, but the food was awesome! Kanpachi and pasta were the highlights, followed by the octopus. 4.5 stars.

A year later and this place doesn't disappoint. It's my go to spot when I am in Honolulu and always my recommendation to friends and family who are traveling to Honolulu. The sausages and clams this time around was spectacular and order the toasted beef to dip in the sauce

Some plates were okay - the octopus was the highlight for me. It was perfectly cooked and flavor and smokiness was there . Service was good Has an outdoor section as well as indoor

Parking: small lot located behind of restaurant, street parking (can be tight) Service: table service Ambiance: lively, cozy Food: located in Kaimuki, been wanting to try this place for good reason. Went for their brunch and would def recommend their mapo tofu biscuits and sisig. be sure to follow their instagram for local events happening!

** 4.5 rating Came here with family to celebrate a special occasion, and it ended up being such a memorable dinner. I've been wanting to try Mud Hen Water for the longest time and i'm so glad I did -- especially if you appreciate locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes that still feel comforting and approachable, I would definitely recommend. Parking can be a little limited since they only have a small lot, but we had a 6:30 reservation and were lucky enough to snag one of the parking stalls. If the lot happens to be full, though, there's still nearby street parking within walking distance. The restaurant itself has a really warm and intimate feel. Each indoor table comfortably seats around six people, so for parties slightly larger than that, the staff recommended either the high bar-style seating inside or outdoor seating. The outdoor area is actually really cute and would be perfect on a nice evening. What stood out to me initially was how attentive they were about allergies and dietary restrictions. Our waitress asked right away if anyone had allergies, intolerances, or specific diets, which honestly has never really happened to me at a restaurant that I can remember. We had two people in our party with tree nut allergies, so that extra level of care was really appreciated and made everyone feel more comfortable dining there. Since we had a group of eight, we decided to do everything family style, which I highly recommend. ** (There is an option to do family style on the menu which is $65 per person.) However, my family did not do that, despite not choosing that option we still left perfectly content. My family likes to eat to 80-85% fullness so it was just the right amount. Doing it this way really allowed us to try a good variety of the menu, and every dish that came out was genuinely good. Nothing felt overly heavy despite trying so many different things, and you could really taste the quality of the ingredients. They also brought out a complimentary eggplant purée with crackers for the table to try, which was such a thoughtful touch and a nice way to start the meal. We ordered the country bread, which had been recommended to us when we ordered the sausage and clams. It was warm, perfectly buttered, and really good overall, even though ours came out slightly more charred than expected. The one dish that didn't fully live up to the hype for us was the chicken long rice croquettes. I had seen them frequent in most reviews, so maybe my expectations were a little too high, but personally it ended up being the most underwhelming dish of the night. They got cold pretty quickly and ended up tasting a little dry. I'd probably rate them around a 6/10 -- not bad by any means, but also something we could have done without compared to the other dishes we ordered. One thing I would like to mention is that the water service could have been a little more attentive. It wasn't necessarily because the restaurant was busy, but more so that our table did need a bit more check-in throughout the meal. We are very much an only water family. We asked a few different times for water refills during the course of dinner and only ended up getting them once we were already getting ready to leave. That being said, the food itself absolutely makes this place worth visiting. For eight people, our total came out to just under $350 before tip. Still, for the quality of the food, atmosphere, and overall experience, I'd happily come back again.

Outdoor dining for Sunday Brunch... After doing some volunteer work in the Kaimuki area, my friends and I were looking for a restaurant with outdoor dining because of the pandemic. We called several places and took a chance on Mud Hen Water. I've seen this bar/restaurant at the corner of Waialae Avenue and 9th Avenue... and had passed by too many times. I was looking forward to finally try it! Bailey, the manager, was very friendly and welcoming. She was so gregarious that I wanted to return and finish this review... several years later... Sadly, Bailey moved back to Texas, where she's originally from... Anyway, having dinner here with an old friend was still a wonderful experience. We parked for free in the small lot right next to the building. About six cars can be accommodated. There's also street parking. We made reservations online with the Open Table app. A slot for 7:15pm was available and we took it! I received a text at 7pm, stating that our table was ready. I checked in and waited for my friend at the entrance to the parking lot. Our server was satisfactory. She said that the two best sellers were the Hand Cut Pasta with venison (my favorite) and the Chicken Long Rice Croquettes with Japanese curry and scallions. Both dishes were so good that we ordered the Peanut Tofu and Roasted 'n Raw Carrots. My friend liked the Peanut Tofu more than the carrot dish, so I finished the carrots. The entire menu was creative and unique! We had a nice experience!

I don't know why I haven't been to this place sooner. Such a friendly neighborhood gem with locally sourced menu. Fun creative drinks menu too!! Friendly staff and open air dining room. Small parking lot in the back but lots of street parking in the neighborhood!

Interesting menu that has some highs and also some lows. The highs: * Peanut tofu has surprisingly nice texture and pairs well with its sauce * Chicken long rice croquette has excellent crisp and is served on a delicious Japanese curry. Wish they served that curry over some rice. * black sesame ice cream (or was it gelato?) captured the flavor of black sesame paste in such a refreshing way. Lows: * pork belly was a nice cut but the main flavor was pork belly. Wish there was a more interesting sauce or rub. The cabbage served in the side was better than the pork. * venison ragu was fine but tasted like a well stewed beef with pasta. A little too rich. * kahala was well cooked but a little bland. The sunchokes might have been the highlight of the dish. The service was kind but timing and attention to detail can be improved. They brought serving utensils for the food but sometimes not the right utensils for what we were eating. And when we were still eating our meal, we were asked if we were ready to order dessert.

The vibe here is very interesting, I think it's kind of supposed to give a traditional island eatery vibe while still being a bit upscale. The food was amazing!! I had the kamuki cruiser which was excellent -- could really taste the grapefruit or citron in it. I ordered the ono melt and it was great. I loved the pickled spear they provided (pickled papaya?) which gave an awesome tart flavor to the food. The ono melt was pretty greasy and heavy but it comes as a closed face sandwich so it's pretty easy to eat. The bread is crusty and delicious. I loved the black sesame gelato!! And last but not least-- fried ulu!!!! Loved it and would go back just for fried ulu.

This place is so nice I visited twice within two days and then came back again the following month. Have I eaten enough fried ulu to feed a small family? NO. It's a trick question, because you can never get enough of Mud Hen's fried ulu. Not to mention the Chili Pepper Water Aioli will inspire you to lick the dish clean. I mean, obviously, don't do that, cause people will look at you weird, but that's how good it is. At this point, I've had brunch, lunch, and dinner here and every meal is a hit on a hit. Brunch: Sisig, better than my Lola's; Lunch: A'u Crudo, better than my dad's; Dinner: Sautéed Lotus Roots, no family dish to compare it to, but spectacular. And duh, fried ulu at every meal. Seriously. I'm back home on the mainland and dreaming about this fried ulu. It's like a pull-apart fried potato, but with a heartier texture and bonus nutritional value. If I wasn't already married I would marry this fried ulu. Ed and his staff are the consummate hosts. His food has so much love and culture in it and you can see that in where he sources everything from to how it's been prepared. The servers are lovely and earnest and eager to share their favorite dishes with you. The vibe is neighborhood and local and warm. I can hardly wait to go back.

Food is super fresh, ambience is everything and the service was superb. The crudo was killer!!! The Crocquettes were so good, we had to order another order! Mapo Rice cakes were amazing! The hand cut pasta was our favorite Also had order two orders. The porchetta wasn't our favorite. Lacked flavor and it was tough to eat. Not terrible, but not the fav. We fed five people. $250 with tip. A little expensive for the portion sizes as in "family style" but not terrible. We will be back, but wanting to come back for date night!

What a wonderful restaurant! It had a dim and homey feeling, plus the staff were so kind. They treated us well and provided great recommendations. Our food was delicious, and it was brought out in courses which was nice! Highly recommend.

Came here for a friend's birthday and we all got the multi-course option. Food was delicious and I was genuinely surprised by how much food they gave us. My favorites were the clams with dipping bread, blue marlin, and the brownie :) The staff were super friendly as well and there's a tiny lot in the back that we parked in. Overall would recommend doing the multi-course option if you want to try a bunch of different dishes!

What an AWESOME experience!!!!…read more This place is so much fun! Some of the best food we've had in a LONG time, amazing service, great music, delicious drinks, and chill-ass vibes. We had such a great night and cannot wait to come back! We definitely spent some money tonight, but WOW, what an experience! For 4 adults, 2 drinks each, 2 cold plates, 4 tacos, 2 hot dishes, 2 sides, and 2 desserts, we spent $389. And honestly? Every single thing we ate was worth talking about! The older gentleman who seemed to be an owner or one of the patrons was absolutely wonderful and so much fun to chat with. Our waitress was awesome, too! Great service all around. Now, let's talk about the food because EVERY. SINGLE. THING. was delicious! * The Tartar: Excellent! * The Crudo: Absolutely awesome! * The Brussels sprouts: So crispy, it was killer! * The pasta: LORDY, MY GOODNESS! * The crab rice cakes: Honestly, one of the best things we've eaten in a LONG time. We were practically fighting each other to get the last bites. Hahaha! * The poached pears: SO GOOD! And that sticky blondie?! Sticky, chewy, and crispy all at the same time. We were fighting over that one, too! Between the food, drinks, music, atmosphere, and genuinely great service, this place absolutely delivered. It's not an inexpensive night out, but we had an incredible experience, and every dish left us wanting more. We all walked out stuffed and barely made it back to our vehicles.

My favorite was the Prosciutto Arugula salad- a nice healthy option. I also really enjoyed the Ulu tacos! Instead of traditional tortillas, breadfruit slices took its place.

The worst of the bunch was the pork bolognese bianco. Not only was it lacking flavor, it had a faint rancid taste, so after two bites I was done. The service was ok. The bar tender and hostess were very friendly and welcoming. The server was polite and acceptably attentive. Although the server obviously saw that I barely touched my plate, she did not ask about the untouched food. Hmmm. At the end of the meal, she asked if we needed boxes to go, to which we replied, "yes, one for the loco moco please." This was her final opportunity to gather my feedback and acknowledge my untouched plate, but she missed the opportunity. The ambiance is nice, trendy, and kinda elegant. It's definitely not what you'd expect from the exterior, but it was a nice surprise. Overall, this is a pricy place with friendly staff and an impressive ambiance; however, the food is not noteworthy and definitely not worth the price. Don't get the pork bolognese bianco!

Apparently you're normally supposed to put a coin in to open the secret door, but it's broken right now, so the whole vending machine just swings right open. Slightly less secret, but still very cool. Inside is where this place really shines. Moody lighting, a giant orange tree in the middle of the room, Japanese hip hop playing in the background (I want to steal this entire playlist), and extremely cool and friendly servers and bartenders. I've been to a few other attempted "speakeasies" in Honolulu, but most are basically just dark bars with a fun door or code word. Wild Orange actually has the VIBES to make the whole concept work. Definitely worth coming just to hang out and chill. They have a full bar and an extensive specialty cocktail menu. Tried the Purple Dragon, made with ube liqueur and coconut cream. Very sweet--a little TOO sweet for my taste--but tasty and pretty. Probably should have listened to the menu and kept it as a shot, but I wanted something I could sip on for a while and chill. The Umeshu Highball was also very pretty and tasty. My friend who works as a sake distributor was impressed with their selection of good sake, so of course we had to order a bottle. Our server brought it out in an ice bucket, kept it off to the side, and completely served it for us throughout. Very classy. The food menu is fun and creative, but unfortunately not really for me because it's entirely vegan. Most times, but ESPECIALLY when I'm drinking, I want MEAT. Tried the Wild Musubi, a vegan Spam musubi. I'm not actually sure what the "meat" was. Possibly fried tofu? Whatever it was, it was definitely a passable alternative, but would have been 100x better if it were just plain old Spam. It also falls victim to what I find is a common problem with vegan attempts at Japanese food: anything teriyaki ends up being way too treacly sweet without actual meat or seafood to ground it in reality. Also tried the Char Siu Tofu Bao, fried tofu in a red Chinese-style char siu sauce on fluffy white buns. Again, fun and certainly not bad, but these would be 1000x better with actual pork. If Wild Orange had this exact same creative food menu but carnivore edition, this place would probably be 7/5 stars for me. That being said, I know being vegan will actually be a huge draw for some people, and I appreciate that the food is creative rather than just the usual sad vegan afterthoughts. Parking is pretty easy by Honolulu standards. It's inside Hawaiian Brian's, so there's a large shared parking lot. That being said, you might still have trouble finding a spot during peak gym hours since you're competing with all the 24 Hour Fitness customers. All in all, I LOVE this place. Definitely a fun stop--first, middle, only, or nightcap--on a chill night out. Will absolutely be adding Wild Orange into the rotation of places to bring out-of-town guests when I want to impress them with something cool and different. The vegan menu probably means it'll be a couple-times-a-year place for me rather than a regular haunt. But for drinks, service, atmosphere, and pure VIBES? 20/10.

That's a shame because it has the potential to be very good. When you start with a cocktail concept that is deliberately kept low key with no signage, and a drink menu that rotates and evolves, you have a pretty good floor to start. Having a cozy place to settle in and being able to enjoy food from Chris Kajioka should give 430 Pkwy a high ceiling. If you like an espresso martini try something a little different. Their Espressing My Love batches espresso with Averna, black walnut bitters, and a unique monkeypod syrup. Unfortunately, there is no espresso machine so you cannot get fresh drawn espresso to make a Carajillo the way Cafe Miro use to. The ahi brioche is a carry over from all Chris Kajioka places. The grilled cheese is excellent. Hotdogs are kicked up - it used to be a black truffled miso chicken sausage but the current one is a little different. The problem is the food preparation totally undermines the whole place. Without a separate kitchen you have frying being done just a few feet away from where cocktails are made. If you sit on the right side of the bar you will quickly understand why this doesn't work. I would come here more frequently if i didn't have to smell like cooking oil afterwards. Fix that problem and this place would rock.

These were ok, I would skip these next time. A little burnt. My favorite was the Ensalada Salad. The crab was sweet and the salsa opaca was so refreshing with the apple foam. For our mains, we went with the Pepperoni Pizza and White Pie, because these boys absolutely love their garlic! One of my boys was in the mood for something other than pizza, so we also ordered the Fish & Chips. The White Pie was beautifully balanced--the garlic was flavorful without being overpowering, and there was just the right amount of mozzarella for that satisfying cheese pull without going overboard. The Pepperoni Pizza was equally delicious, with a generous spread of pepperoni and a great pepperoni-to-cheese ratio. My sons thoroughly enjoyed every bite! Everything arrived within a reasonable amount of time, especially considering how busy the restaurant was. My oldest couldn't stop raving about the chicken wings, making multiple comments about how juicy they were. (A future foodie in the making, perhaps!) Portions were generous enough to leave us with a good amount of leftovers to enjoy the next day, which is always a bonus when feeding growing boys! Overall, a great dining experience with delicious food, attentive service, and a fun, energetic atmosphere. We'll definitely be back! Next time, we might opt for takeout so we can explore more of their pizza selections. There's definitely more on the menu we'd love to try!
