This restaurant/bar is a perfect place to have dinner before going out to the bars in the area. I've celebrated two friends' birthdays here and I've always had a great experience. Mua's atmosphere is a complete vibe in its own unique way. The place is dimly lit with lots of wall decors, loud music, and two floors. For the two occasions I've been here, they've sat me on the second floor, which I really liked because I get to see a great view of the downstairs and its decorated walls. FOOD: - Shiitake Mushroom Crostini: I think this appetizer is a bit overpriced ($16) for the amount they give (4 pieces). The mushroom was creamy and delicious and the arugula salad was tasty as well. However, I wish they added more goat cheese. - Chicken Wings: This might be my favorite from the dishes we ordered. From the menu, the flavor is quite odd (fish sauce, chili, & mint), which are flavors I love (separately), but it was intriguing enough for me to order. The balance of saltiness from the fish sauce, the tanginess from the citrus, and spice from the chili was phenomenal and the minty flavor added a great kick. - The Hamburger: The burger option seemed to be out of place in the menu, but it was very juicy. The fries were also amazing! - Blackened Catfish: I am not really a big fan of catfish, but this is my friend's favorite. I tried it and I thought the seasoning was so flavorful. Overall, I had a great experience at this place. The service was fast. We have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while. Finally, we had the chance to. We loved the ambiance, the music and full bar. However, the food was unfortunate. I tried the lamb shank that was basically stew with extremely chewy lamb. It was awful and I didn't eat my meal. My wife had the chicken that was under flavored and overcooked. I was really excited to enjoy the food and ambiance since I was joining for a birthday celebration. Our group sat down to enjoy our dinner and our server Juliana took her time to come by and greet us and take our drink order. Drinks took some time to come out which is to be expected. We tried to get her attention to order some additional appetizers but we got the hold on finger. Once our second round of appetizers came out I tried to get her attention once again to get a couple more sharing plates and once again received the finger to give her a second. She then came over and asked what I needed and I asked for plates. We continued enjoying our appetizers and waited for our order to be taken for entrees which was another thing. One of our friends tried to order the shrimp and she looked at them in disgust and said "that's an appetizer" to which they then felt obliged to order an entree, the fried chicken, which they only ate one piece. After she took our order I tied to get her attention and let her know that it was our friends birthday to which she mouthed "I know". We got our entrees pretty quickly and plates were removed as needed. Eventually dessert menus came out but we didn't want anything as the service had been terrible. To end the dinner fiasco she brought out a candle on a plate and said since yall didn't order any dessert. We would have been better off with no candle and no remark. I dropped in to have a bite to eat. Not the greatest experience and the prices were insane. I sat at the bar and the 1st bartender was EXTREMELY dry. Maybe they don't like their job or just weren't "feeling it" but that began the uneventful experience. (I should've left at that point.) I order my drink and a meal. The drink was cool and the food was brought out in a timely manner. After I finished my meal I decided I wanted a caesar salad with shrimp. ( seems easy enough and well not too expensive) Yet, the salad comes and the dressing tasted as if it were from a bottle. And the shrimp aren't on the plate. Fast forward to the bill. My 1st drink and food order was just fine. But I was charged $23 for 5 shrimp. I asked for a side of shrimp to add to the salad. Mind you the salad was $13, when I asked the bartender about it. But let's be clear the cost of 5 shrimp is a WHOLE meal to which I didn't get and there was NO concession to the cost. With that I will NOT patronize this establishment again. Returned here after a long hiatus. I had the mussels and frites. The huge portion comes a single bowl with the fries on top. A nice presentation but the problem is the fries get soggy after about 3 minutes. Who wants soggy fries? Jeez. No bread or crostini to sop up the fantastic broth. So I had to ask for bread. They didn't give me a mussel fork so used the shells to grab the meat. Several of the mussels weren't quite open so I tossed them. First time dining at MUA and was by far an extremely disappointing experience. There was nothing amazing or memorable about the place other than knowing I would not be back. The service provided by Julianna was mediocre, unfriendly and passive aggressive. I was there for a friend's birthday and I know they regret choosing MUA to have their birthday dinner. Time to order food and drinks by server Julianna took a while and when we finally had her attention she lacked patience in allowing the group to finish ordering. She displayed a careless manner and sarcastic attitude in how she tended to our table. However, the food came out relatively quick. Perhaps it was due to the food being mid. The salmon I ordered was ok but nothing great or special. I've had better. If you imagine a large club and a nice restaurant, then that's basically what Mua is like. The ambiance is fun with good music, but it's also really loud and you'll have to come in with the expectation that it's gonna be hard to hear the people at your table. I was only able to have a conversation with the people directly next to me and in front of me haha. The food and drinks made up for it though! Evad'o cocktail ($14): This had peach ciroc vodka, peach purée, pineapple juice, and lime. It was honestly one of the best drinks I've had with a really strong peach flavor. No Cheese Mac n' Cheese ($11): I wasn't looking forward to a vegan dish, but this ended up being my favorite of the night. This uses a butternut squash purée and it was SO creamy and addicting to eat. Brussel Sprouts w/ Brown Butter ($11): Crispy brussel sprouts with good balance of flavor and some nuttiness from the brown butter. I only wish the dish was bigger! Chicken Liver Pâté ($7): This was probably the least memorable dish we got. I wish there was more pâté and balance of flavor with the pickled pear. They had no available tables based on reservations so we sat at the bar (small and noisy, with loud music and football on the tv) and were served quickly , thankfully before the reservations came in as they were like three huge parties. Both the food and drinks were good at this place. The music was mixed with a live DJ. While we were inside the restaurant everything was great. However, the outside experience is another story. While I know that it shouldn't affect the rating of the restaurant, I feel that the complete experience will dictate whether you go back or not. We had put our name on the Yelp waitlist (loved that they had that) and arrived in plenty of time. However, it took us about 20+ minutes of circling to finally find a spot that we could squeeze into. After dinner we came out to a smashed window! Apparently all the cars on one side of the street had their windows smashed. At the same time there was an armed robbery that had just happened up the street. The police told us to just make a report online and leave the area immediately. The inside dining area consists of a main hall and an upstairs area. Both are fun, the music is loud in both. The tables are a little cramped next to each other. The bar is nice and they've got a few fun in house cocktails you can try. The beer and wine choices are nice as well. The food is nice, nothing out of this world, but it's good. Came by for dinner the other night and it was a mediocre experience. Made a reservation via Yelp and our table was ready upon arrival. The restaurant had the following rules during the reservation stage: - 2 hour time limit - Credit card required for reservations - Changes or cancellation within 24 hours would result in a $20/person fee. - Only full parties can be seated. - Late arrivals of 15+ minutes may not be honored. *phew Upon arrival to the restaurant, there were more rules: - modifications to the menu would be declined - Had to text back the restaurant confirming the reservation within 1 hour of dining... Now that all of the rules are out of the way, the restaurant was a repurposed warehouse, a la nightclub. As the night went on, the music got louder and more obnoxious...definitely felt like eating inside a VERY LOUD club that I couldn't really hear my dining partner?!? Our server came by with suggestions and take our order. Surprisingly, our dishes all came out within minutes of ordering. (We did say it would be okay to have them bring out dishes as they came out.) Started off with the Shiitake Mushroom / herb goat cheese crostini, arugula and it was delicious! The mix and blend of flavors definitely made this dish stand out. The No Cheese "Mac n' Cheese" / butternut squash, cream was a unique and light spin to a traditional dish. The Beef Bone Marrow / cornichon, toast was a tasty treat although the toast didn't taste too fresh... The Chicken Milanese / lemon, caper, shallot, arugula came out as a huge portion. The chicken was relatively juicy and this was perfect for sharing. Ended off the meal with Bread Pudding / creme anglaise, raspberry sauce which may have been the highlight of the meal as it came out hot and fresh! ~$60/head after tax and gratuity with tons of leftovers. Our appitizers and entrees: bone marrow, Caesar wedge salad, fried chicken/cornbread, pork ribs, no-cheese mac n cheese, and bread pudding for dessert. Highlights of the meal were the pork ribs (tender and had a nice asian fusion taste, like chinese 5 spice), mac n cheese (TJ's reduced guilt tasting, but gourmet), wedge salad (sooo so umami) and bread pudding. The fried chicken was fine, but as a big fan of Jollibee-esque fried chicken, it just wasn't a standout to us. Would skip the chicken next time. Service was average, could have been a bit better, but wasn't unpleasant. Hostess was a bit short and seemed stressed, but wasn't rude or unpleasant. They've been on my radar for YEARS, and whenever I make plans to come through, something out of the bizarre cosmic forces destroys that plan. And I kept thinking, "One day..." And ONE DAY finally came through! Coming off Oakland airport, Hubbers and I were headed for another eatery, then we called an audible and said, "What about Mua??" So happy! So SO happy to finally make it here! The only uh-oh we had is that we didn't have reservations. No biggie, we'll wait. But it wasn't bad! We were told the only seating they had available for two was at the bar which worked out well since we much preferred that anyway! Since I've been wanting to come through for some time now, I already knew what I wanted: beef bone marrow. Their menu is interesting. Hubbers and I wanted to try at least six things, but we narrowed it down to four (which is still a lot!) CRISPY POLENTA: I was hesitant to try this because of the spicy tomato sauce, but it was not bad at all! My experience with polenta is extremely limited but this was impressive. FRIED CALAMARI: Surprised Hubbers went for this (he normally skips this. A lot.) made to order hot and crispy. Not too many fillers. Seasoning was above par. And it was PLENTY! BEEF BONE MARROW: I heard "Tadah!" in my head soon as our server set it down in front of us. This dish was pretty! Hubbers and I dug in and smeared some on the perfectly toasted bread. They were generous with this as well. Plenty of marrow inside. The toppings didn't take away any essence of this dish. So happy happy I finally got to try it! SOFTSHELL CRAB PO'BOY: We got this only because I'm a softshell crab fiend. Since the fried polenta's spicy tomato sauce wasn't bad, I expected the same for the aioli that came with this sandwich. Sadly, I was wrong. That aioli was soooo spicy (and abundant) that I barely tasted the crab itself. I couldn't get through a third of it. Since Hubbers was full, he said he's more than happy to have it as a second meal. FOOD: 4.5. SERVICE: 5. Our server was fantastic! VALUE: 4. More than fair! TL:DR - No Cheese Mac and Cheese I thought was great. Very light but wonderful flavor. Bone marrow was served in single pieces (vs. cut in half), but they do give you a good amount. Seasoned well. My favorite dish of the night was the mac n cheese, and it was something the waiter recommended and said was very popular and I understand why. The pureed butternut squash was a perfect compliment to the cream. While it was light on flavor, it was still very flavorful. I enjoyed the twice cooked kale salad, while my partner didn't. I thought the dish had a perfect balance of sweet from the currants, sour from the pickled kohlrabi, and the twice cooked kale was soft. The pine nuts also added a nice flavor as well. The bone marrow was also nicely done. They don't cut it in half (boat style) like most places, instead they gave us three smaller bones. It did come with a green pesto looking sauce on top. While it seemed small, there was a surprising amount of marrow in it and it was seasoned perfectly. So A+ there. Now the most disappointing dish was easily the crispy tofu. This is super basic crispy tofu you get from any Chinese American resteraunt. Cubed, lightly fried, little to no seasoning, and what seemed like bottled sweet chili sauce. Even if it wasn't bottled sauce, it wasn't any better than the bottled stuff. Beyond that, our server (Mia) was super nice and friendly. Did check on us probably a bit more frequently that I would have liked, but was super nice and didn't rush us out or anything. All in all, Mua has super creative dishes and most of it was pretty good, but I don't think the food as a whole would make me want to return to try the rest of the menu. Mussels with fries 2. Beef carpaccio 3. Bone marrow This time, we also ordered 4. Crème brûlée 5. Affogato 6. Calamari The mussels with fries (1) is my all-time favorite! I get it every time I come here. It is a tomato-base sauce with mussels and fries on top, covered in aioli. The mussels are drenched in the delicious sauce, and the fries are perfect dipped in the sauce. The portion is also very large, I think its enough to share between 2 people. The beef carpaccio (2) is also delicious - thinly sliced beef with capers, pine nuts, arugula and Parmesan cheese on top. There is a total of 6 slices, so it goes fast, I wish it came with more of it! The bone marrow (3) is also one of my favorites, I am a sucker for bone marrow. This time we also ordered the calamari (6), it was fine, nothing too special. It was tasty though. The crème brûlée (4) and affogato (5) were the perfect way to end our meal. I treated my parents for dinner and made an early reservation for 5:30pm, just 30 minutes after they're opened, so it's not too crowded or loud because the music can get pretty loud (great for the younger crowds lol). I want to first off give a shout out to our server, Melissa, who was super kind and enthusiastic. She was also super attentive and helpful. I took her suggestion on getting the drink Bismarck, which was super refreshing and not sweet like many drinks. It's vodka based and has a giant basil leaf in it haha For foods, we ordered: - beet salad - love that it includes goat cheese and pecan - beef bone marrow - tastyyyy but fattening. It's okay to eat once in awhile, which in our case, once every few years. Kind of hard to take the bone marrow out but that's why they give you a knife or you can just suck it out of the bone LOL - blackened catfish - flavorful and tender - crispy tofu - a little sweet & sour sauce and good amount of crispy - chicken wings - sweet & sour and a kick of spice - dessert: flourless almond cake, which comes with vanilla ice cream and grapefruit. It's super good when you combine all 3 together! All the dishes came out super quick. We were in and out of the restaurant in only an hour. As for parking, we managed to find a spot a block away across from Modern Times Beer, so I think we were lucky. It can get difficult finding parking around the area so that's also why I like going earlier and leave earlier. Please don't leave any valuables in your car! Hubby and I went here for the first time last weekend and it was absolutely out of this world!! Best fried chicken in the bay, the burger was amazing too! Their crab cakes and garlic shrimp were exceptional. I love their drink selection, and wide array of small plates to choose from. The waiter was so sweet and attentive, excellent service from head to toe. The decor was so uniquely Oakland, beautifully artistic and gritty, yet elegant and clean.
