I heard rumors this place is closing. Could someone update if these rumors are true? Every Christmas we would visit my grandma who lived in Mt View. Mt View Cookies was a stable to eat and to bring home as omiyage. Now I am reading these reviews and I see a lot of people complaining how hard and bland the cookie is. Hopefully my posts will help you think otherwise. I normally do not eat my cookie right out of the bag. First of all I always toast my cookie. It adds a little softness but still have that crunch. Here are some great options you need to try Option #1: Put butter on the cookie and toast it Option #2: Put Peanut Butter on the cookie and toast it! Don't eat it to early, the top of your mouth might burn Option #3: Place cheese on the cookie and toast it. Boom I think I just opened the cookie jar. You dip 'em in some onolicious hot chocolate, coffee, or tea while enjoying the company of some close friends and 'ohana on a cold night. Hell, any night that warrants a hot beverage and good company. I'm a former Big Island wahine who grew up eating these things from the time I could walk and talk till I hit college. The mochi donuts were really yummy, and there are options like the taro flavor (my favorite) or the bacon one (mmm) which aren't too too sugary. We also got a bag of extra crispy chocolate chip stone cookies, and we have to say those weren't our favorite because they had a biscotti texture that we didn't expect. But we'd be open to trying the soft cookies another time, or some of the pastries that were already sold out when we got there around 11:30am! read more

The home of the original stone cookies. They have been making stone cookies or the Japanese biscotti since 1936. It is still located on the old highway. They make other goodies but the original cookie is my favorite. It's great to dip in hot coffee, tea or cocoa because it softens the cookie. The cookie is hard as stone and not very sweet. This is why I call it the Japanese biscotti. read more

We always stop here for my Dad's favorite cookies. We make the drive to Mountain View for the variety of cookies they offer. We usually purchase the different varieties: original, soft, chocolate chip, cinammon coconut are our top choices. My kids and I just eat them as is, but my Dad loves to dip in coffee. FIVE STARS, natch! "Stone cookies" have achieved cult status for many of us, especially ex-Big Islanders. Admittedly, it's not for everyone, but, then again, what is? Stone cookies are an acquired taste. My classmate's family operated the bakery and for some strange reason, we'd sometimes get telephone calls for them. Wrong number! It didn't make sense as the numbers weren't even close. I used to work part-time at a Hilo gas station. The owner's brother-in-law lived in Mt. View and whenever he had the late shift on Saturdays, we'd call him in the morning to pick up stone cookies for us. They cost only $0.40/dozen back then (late '60s). Now, I find them in 11 oz. bags at KTA for between $6.00-7.00. My, my, how inflation has affected nostalgia. I usually eat them plain, straight out of the bag, as I'm a traditionalist. The regular ones are my favorites instead of the newer versions with chocolate chips. Chocolate chips? That's near-blasphemy. I tell those upon whom I present these "gems" as "omiyage" that they are good "dietetic" cookies - they're so hard that trying to eat one will tire out their jaws and therefore cut down on food consumption. Many will consume these cookies by dipping them in milk, hot chocolate, or coffee, softening them to a chewable consistency. Whatever floats your boat. I say, to each his own. Many places and products have fallen by the wayside in recent years: some of the Maui manju shops, saloon pilot and creme crackers from Hilo Macaroni. As much as I enjoy their replacements (mochi from Two Ladies, Kalakoa sweet bread from Punaluu Bakery, Big Island Candies), I hope that stone cookies continue on. We got some pastries here, but I don't think they were that exciting. It was only last week, but I couldn't tell you what they were or anything about them. Not memorable. My 4 stars are really for the Stone Cookies. I wasn't that in to them the first few bites, but I warmed up to it. The chocolate chip are the best. If you like sweet baked goods, don't miss this bakery. There isn't a huge selection since it is a small local place, but everything they make is really good. Their glazed donuts are so light and fluffy that they are closer to cronuts (croissant donuts). We also tried several kinds of danishes, ham and cheese croissants, and the stone cookies that they are known for. The stone cookies are hard like biscotti, and are sweet but not overly so, much like scones. We wound up splitting everything since it was all so good; and we went back the next day for a similar experience. read more

As their name suggests Stone cookies are just that but add delicious to it. I wouldn't eat them without dipping them in a hot drink but whatever floats your boat. My toddler loves eating them - not a bad alternative to a teething biscuit. Unfortunately they aren't THAT easy to find. KTA routinely runs out as does Longs. If you are lucky enough to be on the Hilo side of the Big Island they should be easier to find though. If all esle fails and you are in Kona, fear not you can pay the big bucks and buy them at the airport gift shop for a shameless $12 a bag. I have been ordering the hard rock stone cookies from Honolulu.... the service has always been quick and friendly. Minimum order of 4 packages because they mail in medium size USPS box. Not everybody likes the cookies because it is very hardy, down to earth and not too sweet. To me, it is the best cookie every. Chicken pot pie - turkey/cheese croissants- pastrami croissants - guava turnovers - are my favorites there. Enough variety to keep it interesting.
