I stopped in to pick up an assortment of mochi donuts as a gift. The place is very small so don't be surprised if there is a line outside. They seem to be very quick and efficient though, so it didn't take long. They had a large selection so I just asked for a couple of each, and they were carefully packed up for me. I have a new addiction, guilty pleasure, vice, whatever you wanna call it. The result of extra TKB and P90X workouts. Heck, I ran a few laps before writing this review. All for my visits to Mt. View Bakery. Forget the Stone Cookies, you can find those in the supermarkets. You need to come here for their donuts. At $.65 a pop...ahem...you need not adjust your computer screen. I repeat, $.65 cents a pop, you can walk out with a dozen homemade donuts for under...uh...you do the math. Let's just say, I bought 8 the other day for under $6!!! Cost is a huge plus for this joint, but hey you can get cheap donuts anywhere. The taste of these old-fashioned-glazed-melt-in-your-mouth donuts will make you come back for more. Not to mention the ham and cheese croissants, hot dogs in a blanket, and variety of turnovers and pinwheels ( including guava flavored). A small selection compared to larger bakeries, but juuust right. If there were more choices, I may be doing triple workouts daily and needing a cooler to haul my purchases. Word to the wise: BIG ISLAND LOCALS: Make it a pit stop on your way to town or volcano. Great place to pick up treats for the keiki for school birthdays or class parties. Just cut the donuts in half! I love cookies, but these don't float my boat. I've had them before, years ago, and recently got to taste them again. I knew I should've taken a picture of the single cookie that was gifted to us before breaking it up into pieces, as there are no pictures on here! I guess I must use words to describe it... The cookie is shaped like a rounded rectangle, about a half inch high, about 5 inches long, 4 inches wide, and golden brown. I'm not sure what makes it so solid, but it could be used as a deadly weapon. It is bitable with healthy teeth, anything else forget about it. It's semi-crunchy and crumbly. The sugar level is similar to the Danish butter cookies in the blue can, but without the buttery flavor, resulting in total subtleness, bordering on blandness. I have no idea where the love is in this, but to each his/her own. I hear some dip the cookie into hot coffee to soften it; that just might be the trick. Try it just to say you did. Apparently this place is famous for these stone cookies I never got around to trying, but, whatever according to my friends who live down the street and my mouth which was very happy, it's the fresh pastries that make this place so good. I have two butter rolls, one was plain and the other had cinnamon etc. OMFG. I don't want to know the calorie count but these things are DELICIOUS. From what I hear, they also made these sort of pigs in a blanket that sell out first thing in the morning. Last stop down Nostalgia lane for my parents in Hilo. Here we have the stone cookies. People always have mized reviews about them or even how to eat them. My family just eats them as a cookie, no dipping or anything. At the bakery, there are lots of different flavors to choose from. They have the original which is always good, a softer version, and extra crispy version, i think there was a raisin one, and my families favorite, the chocolate chip one. The price for the original is $4.75 which is a good deal. The chocolate chip one is $6 which is about the same prices that it cost at Longs when it goes on sale on Oahu. read more

I have to laugh at previous negative reviews of this bakery that seem to fall in the following 2 categories: 1) "the Stone Cookies are too hard !!!!" Morons, they explicitly named it "Stone Cookie" and still you are complaining that it's hard ??? 2) "we were unhappy because we got there late and they were sold out." Morons ! It's a tiny little local bakery on a side road up the mountain, when they sell out, they close and go surfing or fishing or whatever. You want the best selection, get there early. This is an old-school Hawaii bakery, with old-school pies and old-school pastries, with old-school prices to match. The pastries are soft and tender (sort of remind me of Entenmanns I grew up with) and probably made with lots of old-school shortening and trans fats (just guessing) and not a whole grain in sight. It's like a bakery time warp. Everything's tender and delicious but the donut leaped to the top of my favorites list as of today. The Taro Haupia Mochi Donut might be the best donut I've ever had. The flavor was delicious, not too sweet, with the perfect chewy texture. Also the Pastrami Croissant, and Musubi were fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend a stop here. read more

The mochi donuts are new to their menu and I think the flavors are different everyday. Super moist and delicious! For me, they aren't glazed too excessively so it was perfect. But my boyfriend said he had wished the whole top was glazed. To each their own, am I right? Nonetheless it was amazing! The butter horns were a "treat gift" to someone so I didn't taste it but I'm sure it was delicious as well. Definitely recommend the donuts though and visit them early because it seems they sell out on some things pretty quick read more
