This place needs to be stopped with all their kittens. I'm about to leave the store with ten kittens every time I come in here. I can hear the meowing in my dreams and want to stop by everyday to enjoy kitten time. This is an unassuming little place in St. Albert, but I like it! It's one of those pet stores that feels as though it's from the past because they still feel alive with pets. We don't get to St. A very often at all, but they have bomb prices in comparison to other places, so it's worth a stop in when we are in town. Case in point: the cat hammock in Petland was $54 and the cat hammock here was $23 (?!?!?!). That's an insane savings. We also got tongs for $11, and they're usually like $25 at Petland. Same brand of Exoterra Tongs too. Crazy. I also got four frozen rats for like $5 each or something? I was impressed by that price for petite rats. We're not feeding our new rescue snake live anymore and she is taking to frozen quite well, so I'm down for the savings and not having to feed live (my heart couldn't handle it). Staff is just OK. It tends to be young kids that don't really know what is going on, prices of things or information on products. They're not too interested in answering your questions so it's kind of like a fend for yourself situation. I know what I'm looking for though so it's all good. This is the best place to get meal worms. You can buy regular sized or super worms that are very gross and fat. They come in a clear plastic container filled with fresh dirt and a bunch of pinkish meal worms that are happily squirming around, doing the things that meal worms do. The prices of their worms are very reasonable, and there's many different sizes as well. I still find them disgusting though, and I often feel like they are going to someone get out of the container and start crawling all over me. I haven't been to Paradise Pet Centre for much else other than the worms, but this is a really nice store that is kept very clean and organized. The staff is really helpful and nice too. I used to have a fish, so sometimes I'd browse the fish merchandise, but it's pretty expensive. I found PJ's Pets and Petcetera to be cheaper. read more

I'm editing my previous review. I had an issue with purchasing fish from this store. I wrote a review as I was very displeased with the service I received from a supervisor. Within 24 the General Manager of the store contacted me directly and addressed my concerns in a very professional and respectful way. I am very impressed with how it was important to him to rectify this. I retract my previous complaint as I believe that Customer Service is very important to this store and I would recommend contacting him should you have any concerns. Thank you Paradise Pets. Paradise Pets has a Halloween contest where if you bring your pet into the store wearing a costume, they'll take a picture and get your info to enter you and your pet for store gift certificates. So, I dressed up my parents' dog and took her there. She was really excited about the whole experience. I followed her around the store and purchased a flying squirrel toy for her. She loves to play fetch. They're a family owned business that has been in St. Albert since 1977. The dog and I just checked out the store part but they also offer training, grooming and boarding in a separate part. It's an awesome pet store with lots of stuff for dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, birds, rodents, rabbits and even horses. They keep their fish tanks very clean - actually they were in the process when we got there, the dog was very interested. They sell some cute dog and cat costumes for Halloween. I think the dog was overwhelmed with all the smells! They encourage you to bring your pet shopping. read more

Doesn't have the "Oh, look at me, I'm squeaky clean" feel that Pet Smart does, which is nice! I think their cat section is a bit small, and the store is predominantly fish and dogs, but they do have some hard-to-find items, including Oxbow diets for small animals! They can even special-order certain items. If only they could special order Mazuri (which is impossible to get for anything other than ferrets in Edmonton and the entire surrounding area). The staff are friendly, at least one always saying hello when anyone walks into the door. Having worked closely with people since I was 16, that's definitely a key tool to making sure that people feel welcome and comfortable. It adds a nice touch! Not all are knowledgeable in what they carry or details about their products, but they do always seem to try and keep one person around that specializes in each department so someone in the store can help you, even if the first staff member you are able to ask for advice from doesn't. I would say my ONLY disappointment with this store is NONE of the diets they carry are really good for chinchillas nor degus. I do some animal rescue work, and have prior experience working at a zoo, so I would know. Degus are often diabetic, and naturally have a low tolerance for sugar. Chinchillas should also have a diet in which sugar is minimized. They have nearly identical dietary needs, which is why most degu owners feed them chinchilla pellets. All of the chinchilla pellets at Paradise Pet Centre contain molasses, which is a big no-no. However, they do carry an actual hard-to-find degu formula that has no sugar. However it's $15 a pop for a package the size of those Quaker oatmeal containers. Other than that, I definitely hold preference for these guys over Pet Smart. Pet Smart seems obsessed with employing kids that know absolutely nothing about animals. Paradise Pet Centre does charge a little more, but they do seem to value quality over quantity, and carry some things you won't find anywhere within reasonable driving distance of Edmonton. read more

I've been shopping at Paradise off and on for 20yrs, mostly for pond supplies or dog items. I now purchase all my dog food and other items here because they support rescue animals. This is very important to me and if my shopping here can help, I'm in. I also like their rewards program because it is a coupon that takes cash off right at the register and I collect on everything I buy as well as receiving the "buy x amount and receive one bag free" reward from the food company. I was there a while ago and was not happy with the customer service, I came in, with a little knowledge and research of a fish i wanted to get, and of course i needed the right equipment but was getting mixed info online so, I came in to learn and prepare, I was met with rudeness and belittlement, I would definitely not come back because of how I was treated. Today my daughter and I were in the market for some fish for her aquarium. We were in Edmonton and debated just running into Petsmart, however didn't- so we could support a local small business. She bought her fish and I bought a collar for my dog. When I got home the collar was too big. So I grabbed the receipt to go back and exchange it- to which I was saw on the bottom- no refunds or exchanges on sale items. I phoned to ask if they could make an exception as the tags were still on the collar and I was just there 30 minutes ago. I was told no- that I was stuck with a too large collar. It never ceases to amaze me that a small local business can have such disregard for customer service. I wasn't asking for a refund- just an exchange for a smaller size. So over a $25 collar- they have lost me as a customer. Moral of the story- don't buy anything from there if you at all concerned about sizing or if it is on sale. read more

At pet paradise you can find everything you could possibly need for cats and dogs. They've got a great selection of cat scratching posts and climbers. They don't have much in the way of fish, but they have a good supply of aquarium hardware, although no where near what's offered at Big Al's. Still, it's a unique place in some respects. You can can the best bog or drift wood for your fish tank. They've also renovated the fish room so it's quite aesthetically pleasing. Ther's also a waterfall and pond with coy right as you walk in and the vaulted up ceiling with skylights creates and fresh, open feel. It's a clean shop and the staff or friendly and helpful, especially the older guy who's always here who may be the manager or owner. read more

Clueless. My children bought a Beta fish from here. They sold us a half gallon tank and a fish and said the water needed to be changed once a week. We followed their advice and the fish died within days. The day it died we knew it was sick. We searched on the internet and every single resource we came across said the water in our little .5 gallon tank needed to be changed daily. I phoned the store, talked to the manager, and all she could say was "we've been taking care of Beta fish for years and we know what to do." When I asked her how to square the information I was getting from all the expert sites online with her possibly bad advice, she just said "we've been taking care of Beta fish for years..." Anyway, the people at Paradise pets are wrong. Beta fish are not low maintenance and they need daily care. In a small tank like they sold us, the water needs to be changed daily (see below). We knew this two days in because we could see the water getting ugly, and the fish getting stressed. But we followed their "expert" advice and the fish died. BEWARE. My husband and I drove out to Paradise Pets from Edmonton to specifically buy some fish and items for our tank. No one greeted us upon our arrival to the store, despite 5 associates standing at the front counter. We finally found someone to help us and it took far too long for them to grab our first set of fish. Again, no one came to us to say where our fish wer (apparently they had been taken to the front counter). We noticed the associates that were originally helping us were now helping someone else - despite us giving clear direction that we were waiting to get more fish. When my husband confronted the sales associates about it (two of them) they were down right rude. We ended up leaving all of our purchases and going back to Edmonton where we purchased everything from Big Al's and had a much better experience. We will not be bringing our buisness back to Paradise Pets, nor will we be recommending Paradise Pets to anyone. read more

I've heard wonderful things about Paradise Pet Centre, so I was looking very forward to going there to buy a fish. I had called a day earlier to ensure that my tank set up left enough time for the water to be ready for the fish. The woman I had spoke to on the phone was very helpful, but I did indicate I would be in the following day to purchase a betta fish specifically. I arrived at the store to be politely greeted, but when I went to the back where the fish are kept I found four female bettas on a dimly lit shelf. I was very underwhelmed and extremely disappointed. It was a big waste of my time [I live in Edmonton and made a special trip on my day off to go.] It would have been nice for the associate to inform me that their fish stock was extremely low. I had asked about a heater, which she indicated they were out of as well. Anyway, I left feeling really bummed. I had to hit up three other pet stores to eventually get a fish and the other tank supplies and wished I had perhaps just gone to Big Al's or something. read more
