The screen of my MacBook Air had developed two vertical bands of psychedelic color that obstructed my view, and as a Brooklyn denizen, I didn't want to make the trip to Manhattan to an Apple Store. So I searched online for a nearby option, and as he was clearly well regarded, I decide to go with him. As a non-techie, I am at the mercy of those who diagnose and repair computer problems. Mark is a miracle worker. My hard drive had a complete meltdown, and he went above and beyond what most techs would do to retrieve my files. Even extracting some documents one at a time when my computer couldn't transfer entire folders. He called me several times to make sure he had the correct file names: some of my files were embedded in shortcuts and couldn't be easily found. He managed to transfer all of my files and install a new hard drive in one day. (Previously, a hard drive transfer at Best Buy, with a healthy hard drive, took over a week.) Fast, friendly, professional and a great price. I cracked my LCD screen on an old macbook pro long past warranty, and looked around for the cheapest way to repair it. Most places quoted well over $500, and MRK was the clear winner at $179, significantly cheaper even than Chinatown shops. Ignore the working out of the apartment weirdness. (Irrelevant for most people, since he picks up and delivers, but I live close by so it was actually faster for me to go there.) This is the best deal you can get. Mark got the part quickly, was great to talk to, clearly knew a lot about the work, and was one of the few people to order the part but let me fix it myself. (His price for repair was also very cheap, but I like DIY.) He confirmed all my questions and concerns, and was very thorough in making sure that the screen fit my specifications and was available around my schedule. It doesn't really matter if we like it or not, it's all about the clock and the dollar bill. With that said, MRK is absolutely the best choice for computer repairs in Brooklyn. At MRK, you will get the best bang for your buck, and your computer will be good as new in the least possible time. The prices at MRK were literally half of what both Geek Squad and the other smaller businesses wanted to charge me. Seriously, all the other places wanted to take me for a ride, while MRK was the only store that offered me fair deal for their services. Furthermore, MRK fixed my computer in only two hours whereas all the other stores spoke in terms of days, and some, speculated roughly a week. So, if you want your computer up and running again in a timely manner, and at reasonable price, then MRK is certainly the place to take it. I checked out quite a few computer solutions and MRK was the only place where the staff was both diligent and honest. All the others tried to sell me the Brooklyn Bridge along with the latest software package. As for a more personal testimonial: I had spent the entire night working on a paper, only to wake up the next day to find my computer completely crippled by a virus. Error messages were popping up on the screen; my web browser and word processor refused to launch; and to top it off, I couldn't access the bloody paper I had spent so many nights slaving over. Needless to say, I was freaking out - majorly freaking out. Flustered, rattled, excitable, with feelings of deep despair and dread in addition to an already lively spectrum of emotions. In other words, I felt like I was in a car wreck, my wife left me, and my dog died all in a matter of three minutes. Anyone who has been in a similar situation can attest to the crisis experience one faces when they need to meet a deadline and their computer goes haywire. Luckily, the folks at MRK responded to the emergency with the precision of surgeon, and not to mention, as an added incentive, the bedside manner of a pediatrician. They calmed me down and told me they would take care of it, but most importantly, they kept their word. My review is a long time coming. I first went to MRK Computers at least two years ago, maybe even three, because my screen wasn't coming up when I turned my computer on. I have a 2011 Macbooki Pro. Mark, the owner and best guy ever, loooked at it on the spot, moved a wire or something, and voila! Everything works! Mark didn't even charge me anything! I left him a $5 or $10 tip (my tip amount also depends on how much money I have) becasue I was so grateful to have my machine working again (I'm a semi-professional writer and video editor so my laptop is one of my most important tools). Ever since, it doesn't matter where I'm living: Harlem, Bed Stuy, Bushwick, etc. Damn, my computer had a minor problem while I was in LA and I decided to wait until I was back in Brooklyn to take it to Mark, because people, most "computer guys and girls have no idea what they are talking about. Oh, and this is good, While working at a bar, my computer was knocked off an empty keg and fell to the ground with the keg falling on top of it. My computer came on but the screen rolled and I could get a picture. It was also cracked a little at the top. This happened on a Ssaturday night and the next day, Sunday I was feeling a little desperate to have it fixed or at least diagnoised (Sunday is the only day MRK is closed) so I made the poor decision to take it to a different guy. I was living in Harlem/Washington Heights at the time and this new guy charged me $200 (that I barely had-I mean I made food in this bar for christ's sake) and told me he replaced my screen. He said there was something wrong with my motherboard or wires or some other nonesense and returned my laptop to me with the screen still cracked and my harddrive now outside of my computer and connected through a series of complicated cords. It was absurd. The next day, Monday, I took this crazy contraption to Mark and he reinserted my harddrive, fixed the wire thing and my computer turned back on like magic. Mark also told me that the new guy I'd gone to did not fix my screen for x,y, and z reasons (I am not a computer person, as I believe I've demonstarted in this emailo, which, is why people like Mark are my heros). I had paid the new guy via paypal and wrote him an email using Mark's language, accusing him of lying to me and charging me for work he did not do. The next day, I had a full refund from the new/shitty guy. Mark is the best in the business. You will not find a better person in business, and when it comes to computers, this is beyond invaluable. p.s. I had an excellent and exceptional experience with MRK Computer Services. I happened to pass them en route to a different computer place (I didn't know I had a Mac repair shop right around the corner from my apartment), and I'm glad I did. I had damaged my iMac in an attempt to upgrade it with a new solid-state drive. Marc was highly communicative, fast, and professional, and he didn't condescend. The machine's now working good as new. I've had many bad experiences with repair shops in my day -- once I took in a PC, told the owner I thought I had a crashed hard drive, he then proceeded to tell me a day later that I had a crashed hard drive, and demanded 50+ bucks for no reason. This was the opposite of that, it was fairly priced and as pleasant an experience as possible. It's really sad to realize that service like this is the EXCEPTION, not the norm.
