It's been months since Mr. Tea Cafe opened their doors along Ward Ave. & it has become my most frequented milk tea place of all the ones out there. Why you ask? Keep reading! Pros: 1) It's so conveniently located in town! It's right next to Greens & Vines on the corner of Ward Ave & Kapiolani Blvd, which means it's right in the area where I spend most of my time anyway! 2) The drinks are reasonably priced, starting at about $3.50 for a regular sized drink (12 oz, I think). 3) They have quite a few options between iced teas, milk teas, smoothies, and a few other concoctions. They also have a bunch of toppings ($0.50ea) that you can choose to improve your drink 4) You can be as specific as you want! You can choose your level of sweetness, how much ice they add, how many toppings you'd like, etc. They'll let you taste it before they seal the top as well. 5) Rewards program! If you buy 9 drinks, the 10th is free! Like Starbuck, it doesn't matter how cracked out you want your free drink to be, it'll still be FREE; so add as many toppings and mixes and whatevers that you want! I have seen a cup layered w/ every kind of topping before, so really, the sky's the limit. 6) Staff is very friendly! All the employees (even the owner) seem pretty young! Unlike some places where the young staff just brushes you off, the folks here all seem genuinely cheerful! Happy employees are a sign of a happy business, in my opinion. ^_^ Cons: The big downside is parking---SOOOO limited! The parking stalls that are available behind the restaurant in the building are few & shared with patrons of Greens & Vines. If it's nighttime, you can at least try to find parking on Kapiolani Blvd, but even then it's sometimes quite tough. For the health conscious: They have chia seeds, folks! Blew my mind when I found out they had it! My healthiest drink to date has been unsweetened iced tea (normally jasmine green or black) w/ light ice and chia seeds! I've also recently been switching it up w/ aloe instead of chia for the times I want something naturally sweet w/out the added sugar. read more

My standards of decent milk tea were pretty low...that is until I stumbled into Mr. Tea Cafe. My friend and I were in the neighborhood and decided to stop by after listening to our other friend rave about how awesome the place was. When we walked in, I could see what all the hype was about. There were MUSTACHES everywhere!! Besides the enticing logo, the layout/design of the place was simple and inviting. When we got to the register, there were these appetizing macaroons in the display case (apparently they're from La Tour Cafe!) so I ended up getting 3 of those and a regular black milk tea with boba (the tapioca balls). My friend got a roasted oolong milk tea with boba and coffee jelly and he let me try it; I was in love. To be fair, I'd been to other milk tea places on the island but Mr. Tea Cafe has the best boba by far. The texture is perfectly chewy and not too sweet - it marries well with the drinks! The menu was easy to read and they had interesting items such as the vermicelli (tapioca noodles) and aloe! The girl at the register suggested that I get their new kiwi smoothie with the aloe but I didn't have enough money on me so I'll definitely try that next visit. The owner George was in and it was slow so we asked him some questions about the place and he was really nice. Apparently they're still on their soft opening but are building up to their grand opening as they gradually expand the menu with new items. TL;DR: Decent spot for boba with fair prices, but quality was just okay this visit. Clean enough overall, though some detailing and upkeep could help the space feel more inviting. I stopped by Mr. Tea for a quick drink and went with a large winter melon milk tea (25% sugar, brown sugar boba) for about $7.75. The tea itself was fine: smooth, not overly sweet, and I appreciate that it's dairy-free by default. The boba, though, was a bit of a letdown this time. Usually they're pretty consistent here, but today they were sticking together and didn't have that chewy bounce I've come to expect. The shop was mostly empty when I came in, which made service straightforward. The staff were polite and got my drink out quickly, though there wasn't much energy or excitement behind the counter. Typically there are two people working, which seems enough for the pace of business. As for the ambiance, it looks like they finally have the AC running, which is a plus. It was always super hot in here. The space is fairly clean at a glance, but the tables and window areas could use some maintenance and more frequent attention. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, so there are options depending on what you prefer. Overall: Mr. Tea is usually reliable for boba in Honolulu, but this visit was just average. Still, for the price and convenience, I'd come back and hope for a better batch of boba next time. read more

Wow what's this mustache about? Oh it's Mr. Tea! I mustache you a question, but I'll shave it for later. The only question I have is when is this place not busy?? Parking is difficult if you drive a tundra like we do but if you have a cute little cooper it will be significantly easier. Nonetheless it is still worth a drive into town to grab our favorite milk teas from our favorite milk tea place. Besides the getting there, in, and out, the service is outstanding and the staff is always inputting helpful suggestions to trying new things on their menu or even offering their own personal favorites. I've tried the thai milk tea - which is not to be confused with chai - and it is rather sweet so I get it with zero percent and custard pudding. My husband enjoys bitter drinks and gets the matcha milk tea with azuki beans at half sweet. We have been told that they are opening a second location very soon so I guess when the time comes we will definitely check this sequel out as well. read more

Apparently milk tea is an Asian thing and I didn't realize that it was so popular in Hawaii until my friend brought me here. She was raving about how ignorant I was for not having ever tried a milk tea until my visit to Hawaii. The first thing she did was set me down at a table while she ordered me a milk tea with 'boba' and ice cream. Slowly, I took my first sip and tried my best to scrutinize the flavors in my mouth. The 'boba' is tapioca balls and it was particularly fun to chew and sweet. My friend watched my reactions very carefully but after I got used to the flavor, I couldn't stop drinking it! Needless to say, this was the place I lost my milk tea virginity but it was definitely worth trying and now I love it. I don't think we'll have time to try the other places but this was a really cute place with a couple of cute girls that were very friendly to my friend and I. read more

About two years ago I wrote about how extraordinary this place was and about how much I loved it. Two years later, I find myself writing the same thing but with a little more emphasis on what's changed for the better. First off, they have croissant sandwiches. Secondly, their menu has way more to choose from. Third, they have manga on their book shelves. Fourth, they also have games on their book shelves. Fifth, milk tea always tastes great and boba satisfies every time. One thing that's the same though is the parking which is located on the first floor and though there are only a couple stalls where customers are able to park we usually get lucky and come at just the right time where either the rush has just left or has yet to begun. I can't say enough good things about Mr. Tea Cafe! This place has become my daily destination for the best milk tea in town. I have my favorites, the oolong tea milk and peach puchong milk tea, which are perfect for me since i don't like overly sweet drinks. I've tried other boba spots, but this one is undoubtedly my favorite. This place is chill, making it the perfect spot to work or simply relax with your drink. They even offer books and board games for customers to enjoy while sipping on their tea. They also offer the convenience of online ordering, which is a lifesaver when you're in a hurry. It's unfortunate that they only have this one location, but I sincerely hope they remain a permanent fixture in the area. read more

The milk tea is strong here and has an authentic taste compared to some other milk tea places I have been to so far. They brew their teas and are very meticulous with how each and every milk tea is made. They have a shaking device to shake the drinks for them which is really cool and seems high tech. The thing I love about this place is the customer service and the upbeat attitude of the employees here. Lots of hype about this place and lots of good things. If you don't fancy milk tea they offer iced teas, lattes, smoothies, and macaroons. The establishment reflects a lot of what is offered in Taiwan and I believe the owner is Taiwanese as well. Family friendly place as kids will love playing the exciting 'exploding kittens' game provided by the establishment on their shelves while parents can relax and sit down while sipping on some cool beverages. My favorite item from here is the jasmine green peach tea with lychee jelly with only half the sweetness. read more

If you're on a diet, BEWARE! Milk tea is not the healthiest thing in the world, however it is very much one of the most delicious things in the world. I come here and order an austere black iced tea with no sugar and chia seeds but occasionally I will indulge in either their fruit teas or the roasted oolong. If I need that extra kick then I'll order an iced americano. I have no knowledge about their smoothies but next time I'll try the strawberry calpico one of the guys recommended as their popular sellers. read more

Best milk tea shop on the island. I used to be a frequent customer at Taste Tea, but after trying Mr. Tea Cafe, I just couldn't stop coming back. The milk tea is delicious and the interior is beautiful. The shop also stays open until 12 am and provides free wifi, making it a perfect place to get work done. The customer service is also absolutely terrific. The workers here are super friendly and very helpful. I definitely recommend this place to anybody looking for a tasty drink! read more

Mr. Tea Cafe has added a whole plethora of new flavors onto their menu and some items I have vowed to return to try (such as the interesting sounding potted milk teas). I am in love with Mr. Tea! The tea's great, add-in's are great (boba, custard, haupia) and customer service is good. Stamp cards are available. Buy 9 and get the 10th one free. I'm glad there are still businesses that appreciate loyalty. There's ample parking in the parking structure that has dedicated stalls for Mr. Tea and oh guess what, they sell pastries and sandwiches too! Very cute shop and nice decorations. They've a soft grand opening going on. Decor is easy and clean and reminds me of Korean design cafes. We attempted the black milk tea with boba, a matcha green tea with coffee jelly, as well as and salted caramel macaron and all flavors were spot on. The people serving us were fine so I'd definitely see again. read more

I went to Taiwan before. Lots of places in Hawaii make bubble drink like Taiwan. This place tastes nothing like Taiwan. It is trash. Much better options available in Hawaii elsewhere. Do not go. read more
