Wow this place was awesome the food was good got quick service was on point my bro in-law and wife had nachoes that was busting out of the side of the container and I had calamari and onion rings and my grand daughter had chicken and chips it was take out but hey that was fine ate it on the beach will hit then up when we come back again five stars read more

Had a fun stop here after a long walk to the pier. Bloody Mary hit the spot and my daughters drink made with toquilla was rather plain tasting but ok. We ordered Nachos with chicken and they had a ton of cheese - too much cheese it was good but needed more chips to grab up all the other toppings. We didn't finish them. Too much food for us so if you like huge portions give them a try! I can imagine oh a hot summer day this place would be rocking. This place is location, location, location! read more

Beautiful day and fun time, Would have been a 4 or 5 but I have a problem with a bartender that can't listen and help us when the bar gave our credit card to another customer. Instead of telling us we're wrong, maybe they should consider that they messed up and gave our card away, nice customer service. read more

This is the same menu/kitchen as Custom House next door. Not that Custom House is fancy, but Mr. Ricks seems to be an even more casual setting. The drinks and food were decent, but a little pricey for what you get. Nice outdoor seating and view. They had some nice live music that wasn't too loud or overpowering. The clam chowder in a bread bowl was pretty darn good. read more

This was our first time to Avila Beach. Such a cute place and the weather was amazing! We wanted to find a place to share a quick bite and enjoy the weather. This place was good but just ok. Nachos could have been warmer and there was a guy singing near the patio but you couldn't hear due to there music playing. read more

This was the first time we've ever come here. Got to give it to them, they had their Covid procedures down. Order and one window, pick up at another and find a seat. If you can't find one there was plenty of benches on on the promenade open. Wife and son had good burgers. Sons pizza was good but over priced. All the fries were perfect. We had some wings and they were great. I had the fish and chips. I like me some Estero Bay fried fish, and I'm going on record that for me, this is the best. I'll tell you why. They use a panko crusty hat give the moist fish a good texture. Fish was tasty and no oil present. Are through my order which was generous and wanted another order. I should have listened to my belly. I shall return. read more

Great service drinks came out fast and very good Katelyn and Grace very friendly and overall good time

The food sucked and they play homophobic music. The Bloody Mary also sucked. Don't go here.

I've been here 3x times now. First time with a review. I really want to leave more than 3 stars but in terms of the restaurant during lunch I can't give more. While the staff is great, its been 3 mediocre times re food and outside dining. Loved my margarita on the rocks. They obviously have a great location but the music is really loud for daytime. Not really a spot to escape it. The food is just, ok. I had a chicken quesadilla with so much raw garlic in it I couldn't finish it. Daughter had clam chowder, was barely warm and verrrrry thick, like too thick. Husband had patty melt and although it had good bread and seemed like it would be great it just wasn't. Everything was "ok" but with problems and with the cost of food it was disappointing. read more

way over priced...we needed a place where it was pet friendly so this was the first place we saw that looked pretty decent. Got kicked out cause our dog was barking and a couple complained. To me if your gonna eat at a "pet friendly restaurant" there's gonna be dogs barking and/or cats meowing deal with it or don't eat at a "pet friendly restaurant" just saying!!! read more

Did you ever hear the one about eight women and two drunk guys? Well, if you were at Mr. Ricks last Saturday you'd heard all about it. My Cousin had planned for our group to eat here because she'd heard that the Fish & Chips are delicious and cost friendly, but Ricks was closed for a wedding and did not open until after dark and by then we'd eaten and it was Party time for the bar. Mr. Ricks is a dive spot, with 80's music playing when we first arrived and then later a cover band played. Because it was so packed inside we opt'd to sit on the patio which was well lit , but I think they might consider ordering some heat lamps for the colder times of the evening, they have high tables and stools, and a walk up window to order food and beverages. There were many age groups at Mr Ricks, there was a bachelorette party going on at one table, I'd never seen a more forlorn bride-to-be in my life. There were college age kids drinking beer and hanging out, others were inside dancing to the music. My Cousin and I decided to get Pina Colada's as we wanted something tropical. the bartender warned us they did not have a blender, but we proceeded to go through with ordering, the drink had little to no alcohol to it, while it was a good "dessert" drink, there was no real bang for your buck, I kept waiting to feel a little buzz, and frankly nothing ever happened, so I wasn't pleased. Others ordered Whiskey Sours, those did pack a punch, but frankly wasn't my drink of choice. Despite the fact my youngest cousin arrived back at our table with two drunks that make Loyd and Harry of Dumb and Dumber look like geniuses, and then proceeded to pour half a drink down Hayley's Mom's back when he called her a Hot Mama, and who we easily convinced that we were all sister wives of the one male companion in our group who is 18 years our junior.... it turned out to be great night. :) So if you want a little excitement and mediocre drinks on your trip to Avila, stop by Mr Ricks and look for Dumb & Dumber, something tells me they will still be there. read more

First time to Avila Beach and prior to visiting we always look for the best local spot in the area to have drinks and food. Everyone said you got to visit the Custom House/Mr Ricks. Right at opening both spots had a line so you know the spot must be good. We sat outside to take in the whole beach experience and nice weather. To sit outside you have to order through Mr Ricks outdoor menu. The line is a little slower due to only having 2 bartenders taking drink orders and food orders. Menu selection is on point. Food is great with good portion. Drinks, the wife was impressed. Just be patient with the outside line. They are not slow, it's just a lot of people choose to go there. Good food/drinks take time. See you guys soon! read more

Great causal seafood restaurant with outdoor tables facing the ocean! You order at the counter and then your number is called. Very fast service. I like the fact that you can sit closer to the street in the sun or towards the back in the shade. My fish sandwich was the best I've ever tasted! A big piece of unbreaded fresh fish. read more

Worst margueritas we've had in 50 years. Bring your own and hang at the beach. If this review is doubted, order one. Good luck.

This place makes you feel like you are in paradise. The best place to come grab a drink and enjoy a nice sunny day by the beach. They even have live music. The 2 performers were amazing and took many requests. They played a wide variety of music and there was never a song that did not sound good. I wish I could come grab a drink here every afternoon and enjoy the amazing weather of SLO. People watching as people walk by on the boardwalk is always an added bonus too. I am giving it only 4 stars because I would not come here for food. It is typical bar food but not the place I would come for lunch or dinner. Highly recommend for a drink though. read more

Garlic fries were amazing but the shrimp cocktail was just bad. use to Marisco shrimp cocktails overall a decent place to grab lunch

To start out, the bartenders were the people taking orders so the line took extra long. At 4:00 in the afternoon, one drunk guy was holding up the whole line and complaining how drink were missing and the bartender was entertaining the situation and didn't make an effort to move the line along. Very unorganized. We sat down and food took forever to come out, food was decent, but not worth the wait and poor service. read more

One of the places where you can find seating on a busy Saturday at Avila Beach. The food and drinks are good. Though the inside seating does not give a view of the beach, the outer seating does. There's tv and music too. Since we were staying down the road doing the RV thing for the weekend, we were limited to Mr. Ricks for a cool beachy bar that served beer and played live music. The place itself is pretty cool and what you will typically find for a bar at the beach. Not too fancy and they have a pool table inside along with a stage. 4-stars easy for the beer/bartenders/and live music. Where this place really lacks is in the food. As other reviewers have discovered, the kitchen is shared among the neighboring restaurants. They serve pizza from the pizza place around the corner and the place right next door does the burgers and sandwiches. I ordered the cheeseburger medium. When I got the thing I could just look at the 1/2 lb burger and knew that the patty came out of the freezer. A thin flat disk with melted and slightly charred cheese from the grill was nicely placed in what was a decent bun with fresh lettuce and tomato. As bar food goes, it was barely ok. The beef had no flavor, it was well done, so it wasn't juicy either. The fries were only ok as well. If I were in a real dive bar with a buzz it would be great. The fact that it came from the 'fancy' restaurant next door only leads me to conclude that I'll be grilling my own burgers the next time I visit Avila. read more

Effin YEAH gente!!!! this is THE place to get great burgers that bring you back to the days of the open flame cook-out. tons of great flavor that reminded me of my dad who believed that flavoring meat on the grill depended mainly on the quality of the beer you use. we came in during lunch time and were treated like royalty. (of course they have a great selection of wines.) very misleading from the outside (is this place the size of a hallway??) there are large pool tables and a huge bar. i'm told this place is known for the great reggae played on the weekends. yes, yes, a thousand times yes. read more

Just what I would expect from a college, beach town: a ton of young, college kids in bikinis/boardshorts and flip flops trying to get their groove on with their liquid courage. This place actually has a pretty cool setup. There are seats in front of the bar, outside, with a beautiful view of the beach. Inside, there is a long bar with a healthy dance floor. The stage upfront is big enough to fit a dj booth. For special events, they use the back booth with the Ms. Pac Man table for bottle service. If I were back in college, young and lived in SLO, looking for a cool place to hang out and drink, I would probably come here. It seems to be a pretty popular watering hole. read more

We ordered the Fish & Chip, Calamari & Chip, Louie Crab Salad, Clam Chowder and Fish Tacos. Clam Chowder was too creamy and thick where we were not able to taste the clams as much as we would like. The Calamari & Chips was decent but didn't have a strong squid taste we were expecting. Louie Crab Salad did not have enough crab in our opinion for the cost. The fish tacos was bland and had to add cocktail sauce and salsa to give it some flavor. Fish & Chips was the best out of everything that we ordered. The fish was evenly battered and tasted fresh. Overall a good restaurant to pass by if you need a quick bite! read more

We have been at Mr. Rick's for the Super Bowl three out of the last four years (and many other times in between). We have never had a bad experience. It's always a good time. Today we had our first experience with less than great food. I took my plate to the bartender and pointed out the raw batter on my Calamari. He apologized and quickly came back with a new plate of perfectly cooked Calamari. Glad it was handled quickly and with no problems. Not disappointed. This is a cool place to get a drink right before or after playing on the pier/beach. The crowd is "older." There are signs right outside that specify you must be 21+ to enter. I came here to karaoke, only to find they no longer do it. Down but not defeated, I decided on a nightcap, a bit of writing, and bed instead. Turns out, that was actually really good idea. Sitting down with my trusty laptop, I ordered a Pear Royale and went to work. Apparently, this place has creativity in the air, because I've never got more done in such a short amount of time. And it wasn't just filler drivel - it was good! Coincidence, maybe, but that doesn't change the fact that they mix up a damn good drink here. The music's good, too. I'm an out-of-towner who taking time to write this review to the owner of Mr. Ricks...When you only have so many minutes in your weekend getaway, you may think twice about going here. My sister (who is a local) said the wait-in-line is always like this. There are six to ten people standing in line waiting to place an order at the bar with only one employee on the other side taking orders. Looks like you may want to reconsider your hiring strategies because it's not working. I won't be waiting in your long line to patronize your establishment next trip when the employee is working double-time and still can't make headway on the line. Not fair to your patrons and not fair to your staff! read more

Chowder has always been good, fish and chips were delicious. The single line for drinks, food and Togo orders is a very bad idea! We drove 2 hours to only order 1 drink for each of our party. The line is about 20 mins long. Once your order is called you pick it up. There's no servers, so if you need water, silverware, extra ketchup be prepared to wait in a long line. read more

This place is horrible, inedible. If there's was less than 1star that would be my review. It is frozen microwaveable crap they are charging you a lot of moneylenders to eat. It is for when you are too drunk to care what you eat! Avila Market is 5 stars better. They should be ashamed! read more

I've always had a blast when I visit this locals pierside bar in the past. Today I'm sad to say was quite the opposite! In spite of the fact that the place was NOT busy, the only guy working didnt even greet me until I approached him. No table service today I guess! As I carried my drink back to my high top table with this joint's remarkable views I found my table to be tipsy! It was rocking like crazy on the uneven pavement where it had been centrally positioned on the patio. Drink = spilled...lovely! No napkins either. So I made the choice to stay and enjoy the afternoon in spite of the rough start. Well, I put in my order only to have the bartender return 5 minutes later, insincere apology in hand...he forgot WHAT I'd ordered AND to even punch it in! WELL, 15 minutes later some of my favorite nachos on the Central Coast arrived however I decided to take them to go in hopes of actually enjoying myself ELSEWHERE! Stopping at this place was a mistake I will NOT be making any time again soon! read more
