This was the first time we've ever come here. Got to give it to them, they had their Covid procedures down. Order and one window, pick up at another and find a seat. If you can't find one there was plenty of benches on on the promenade open. Wife and son had good burgers. Sons pizza was good but over priced. All the fries were perfect. We had some wings and they were great. I had the fish and chips. I like me some Estero Bay fried fish, and I'm going on record that for me, this is the best. I'll tell you why. I've been here 3x times now. First time with a review. I really want to leave more than 3 stars but in terms of the restaurant during lunch I can't give more. While the staff is great, its been 3 mediocre times re food and outside dining. Loved my margarita on the rocks. They obviously have a great location but the music is really loud for daytime. Not really a spot to escape it. The food is just, ok. I had a chicken quesadilla with so much raw garlic in it I couldn't finish it. Did you ever hear the one about eight women and two drunk guys? Well, if you were at Mr. Ricks last Saturday you'd heard all about it. My Cousin had planned for our group to eat here because she'd heard that the Fish & Chips are delicious and cost friendly, but Ricks was closed for a wedding and did not open until after dark and by then we'd eaten and it was Party time for the bar. Mr. Ricks is a dive spot, with 80's music playing when we first arrived and then later a cover band played. Because it was so packed inside we opt'd to sit on the patio which was well lit , but I think they might consider ordering some heat lamps for the colder times of the evening, they have high tables and stools, and a walk up window to order food and beverages. There were many age groups at Mr Ricks, there was a bachelorette party going on at one table, I'd never seen a more forlorn bride-to-be in my life. There were college age kids drinking beer and hanging out, others were inside dancing to the music. My Cousin and I decided to get Pina Colada's as we wanted something tropical. the bartender warned us they did not have a blender, but we proceeded to go through with ordering, the drink had little to no alcohol to it, while it was a good "dessert" drink, there was no real bang for your buck, I kept waiting to feel a little buzz, and frankly nothing ever happened, so I wasn't pleased. Others ordered Whiskey Sours, those did pack a punch, but frankly wasn't my drink of choice. Despite the fact my youngest cousin arrived back at our table with two drunks that make Loyd and Harry of Dumb and Dumber look like geniuses, and then proceeded to pour half a drink down Hayley's Mom's back when he called her a Hot Mama, and who we easily convinced that we were all sister wives of the one male companion in our group who is 18 years our junior.... it turned out to be great night. :) So if you want a little excitement and mediocre drinks on your trip to Avila, stop by Mr Ricks and look for Dumb & Dumber, something tells me they will still be there. read more

First time to Avila Beach and prior to visiting we always look for the best local spot in the area to have drinks and food. Everyone said you got to visit the Custom House/Mr Ricks. Right at opening both spots had a line so you know the spot must be good. We sat outside to take in the whole beach experience and nice weather. To sit outside you have to order through Mr Ricks outdoor menu. The line is a little slower due to only having 2 bartenders taking drink orders and food orders. Menu selection is on point. Food is great with good portion. Drinks, the wife was impressed. Just be patient with the outside line. They are not slow, it's just a lot of people choose to go there. Good food/drinks take time. Great causal seafood restaurant with outdoor tables facing the ocean! You order at the counter and then your number is called. Very fast service. This place makes you feel like you are in paradise. The best place to come grab a drink and enjoy a nice sunny day by the beach. They even have live music. The 2 performers were amazing and took many requests. They played a wide variety of music and there was never a song that did not sound good. I wish I could come grab a drink here every afternoon and enjoy the amazing weather of SLO. People watching as people walk by on the boardwalk is always an added bonus too. I am giving it only 4 stars because I would not come here for food. It is typical bar food but not the place I would come for lunch or dinner. Highly recommend for a drink though. read more

My sister (who is a local) said the wait-in-line is always like this. There are six to ten people standing in line waiting to place an order at the bar with only one employee on the other side taking orders. Looks like you may want to reconsider your hiring strategies because it's not working. The Calamari & Chips was decent but didn't have a strong squid taste we were expecting. Louie Crab Salad did not have enough crab in our opinion for the cost. The fish tacos was bland and had to add cocktail sauce and salsa to give it some flavor. Fish & Chips was the best out of everything that we ordered. The fish was evenly battered and tasted fresh. Since we were staying down the road doing the RV thing for the weekend, we were limited to Mr. Ricks for a cool beachy bar that served beer and played live music. The place itself is pretty cool and what you will typically find for a bar at the beach. Not too fancy and they have a pool table inside along with a stage. 4-stars easy for the beer/bartenders/and live music. Where this place really lacks is in the food. As other reviewers have discovered, the kitchen is shared among the neighboring restaurants. They serve pizza from the pizza place around the corner and the place right next door does the burgers and sandwiches. I ordered the cheeseburger medium. When I got the thing I could just look at the 1/2 lb burger and knew that the patty came out of the freezer. A thin flat disk with melted and slightly charred cheese from the grill was nicely placed in what was a decent bun with fresh lettuce and tomato. As bar food goes, it was barely ok. The beef had no flavor, it was well done, so it wasn't juicy either. The fries were only ok as well. If I were in a real dive bar with a buzz it would be great. The fact that it came from the 'fancy' restaurant next door only leads me to conclude that I'll be grilling my own burgers the next time I visit Avila. read more

Just what I would expect from a college, beach town: a ton of young, college kids in bikinis/boardshorts and flip flops trying to get their groove on with their liquid courage. This place actually has a pretty cool setup. There are seats in front of the bar, outside, with a beautiful view of the beach. Inside, there is a long bar with a healthy dance floor. The stage upfront is big enough to fit a dj booth. For special events, they use the back booth with the Ms. Pac Man table for bottle service. If I were back in college, young and lived in SLO, looking for a cool place to hang out and drink, I would probably come here. It seems to be a pretty popular watering hole. read more

Rude, lazy bartenders...maybe 20 people total in the bar. Had to ask for service both days. Bartenders acted annoyed when they have to serve us. We are a couple in our 50's, not some rude punks. Nachos are on the menu but asked if they Had chips and salsa but was told no on the 1st day. Came back the 2nd day and asked for chips and salsa and was told that not only do they have chips and salsa but they also have chips and guacamole. Bartender literally told me the other bartenders must have been too lazy to look. Obviously it's stands to reason that if you have nachos you have chips and salsa! Had to clean our own tables too! We have been at Mr. Rick's for the Super Bowl three out of the last four years (and many other times in between). We have never had a bad experience. It's always a good time. Today we had our first experience with less than great food. I took my plate to the bartender and pointed out the raw batter on my Calamari. He apologized and quickly came back with a new plate of perfectly cooked Calamari. Glad it was handled quickly and with no problems. Not disappointed.
