Great location right on the front boardwalk at Avila. They have a little patio out front which is nice when the weather is good. I saw one of the football playoffs games there and they had a big screen projector set up so that was nice for the fans. The food comes from Custom House but they just have bar food type appes. The crowd at night is a little older so it depends on what scene you are looking for. read more

Came here on a Monday, coincidentally it was just in time before Happy Hour ended, got a nice spot right inside the door, had a great view of the ocean and outdoors, plus some cool sports venues on the tvs, excellent mix of modern music from edm to pop to rock, drinks and food was great priced (due to happy hour), the service was most excellent; I ordered 4 drinks and in 10 seconds I had 4 drinks in front of me, the server gave excellent drink recommendations and food recommends (I wanted some buffalo chicken and some garlic fries which he combo'd for me), and the very last thing that I always complain about with local drink serving places, is the condition of the bathrooms; they are usually a mess and quite disgusting to use, and this place had CLEAN bathrooms with actual seat covers and fully functioning closing and locking stalls (you'd be surprised how many places don't have these features). Absolutely terrible place. Terrible drinks, very watered down and food wasn't cooked all the way just awful. They wouldn't let my daughter in with her dmv paper and expired id (she is 22years old) and chased us down the street to make sure we didn't come back. I NEVER thought i would be writing a negative review about one of my favorite drinking spots in the world. I have been a patron of Mr.Ricks for many years. I have had nothing but great experiences. Up until last Wednesday evening. My girlfriend and i walked through a pretty full patio area to an empty bar. A "bartender" was washing glasses as he acknowledged us and said hello. We sat at an empty bar and was ready to order. A gentleman walked in behind us and stood at the bar. The bartender dried his hands and proceeded to take his simple order of grey goose and tonic. I was alright with that. A couple walked in and our "bartender" now turned his attention to a couple of margaritas. Good thing he had to only push a lever for the soft serve ice cream like concoction to be served. During his "pour" he made eye contact with me. At this point i was convinced we would have our drinks shortly. Wrong! Our "bartender"of an empty bar went and checked his phone or mowed his lawn or rearranged his sock drawer. I'm not sure what the "bartender " was doing, but i am sure he wasn't taking our order. I grabbed my girlfriend by the hand and said lets go. I have never been so blatantly ignored in a bar in my life. I was half assed expecting an apology or some kind of response from Thor the guy behind the bar. He wasn't a bartender. Like I said at the beginning, i have nothing but great times and great service from Ashley, Ricky , Calvin and others. I'm sorry Thor didn't read the same employee handbook as they did. Maybe i need to give Mr.Ricks a break for a while. read more

Just came back from there. Was there at 9:45. They told us they would be open until 12:30 at least. The door was deadbolted and they said when my wife called to ask why "oh, we are definitely closed." Problem is, there were lots of people at the bar! Nice. Get ready. Warning this really happened ...I very much wish this did not Now I know this is a laid back beach town and "its all good" is a lifestyle most live by around here. But, that being said a few of us came in to Mr. "R"s very recently for a beverage and snack. We were the only ones there at the time. We watched the one and only bartender, working at the time, stand there and eat right out of the cocktail condiment food tray then served drinks without hand washing. We foolishly over looked all the fore mentioned above and ordered 2 cups chowder. Took over 15 minutes to get the slopped around chowder. While the unskilled, unprofessional bartender was giving us the chowder he gives me a food crusted dirty spoon! After waiting a (timed) five minutes to get a new spoon and after tracking down napkins myself we were over it. To top it off I had to get his attention away from the condiments he was snacking on in order to get a bill....he just yells me the total across the bar. I come to find out that he overcharged me $2.50. Built in tip? Now I know for a fact that if Mr. "Rs" can do much better than this. read more

Well what a disappointment on the service end of things. Cool drink menu. I had a Afternoon Delight but it was like the ice was already melted. My husband said his draft coors light was cold. The menu looks good tho we didn't eat. Here's the HUGE problem. You have a 40 foot bar and as I look up and down there are empty drinks and a sluggish bartender who could not possibly move in slower motion. He keeps turning his back and chatting in the corner with other staff and walking so slow it was almost comical. I wanted to say DUDE!! What is wrong with you....you are losing tips and money!. One guy next to me left. And another guy had to switch places and wave him down TO PAY HIS BILL. we sat and watched both bartenders walk up and down without any enthusiasm for making sure patrons drinks were full and ppl waiting were served. No interaction or conversation was initiated with any customers. You are losing SO much money!! We owned a bar for 8 years and this is an untapped gold mine. Omg get new bartenders!!! read more

Saturday, March 5, 2011 was a memorable evening at this wonderful place in Avila. Yeah, the drinks were pricey, but that being said, the band tonight, Saint Anne' Place from Lompoc was abso-friggen-lutely fantastic!! There was a wedding party there (congratulations!) who seemingly enjoyed themselves and one young woman (Gina) who requested Foxy Lady, and she was, and she got her wish. The band dutifully obliged. Were it not for a couple of cro-magnon pool players who seemed to actually ooze a level of hostility toward the music, toward me (for dancing and having a good time?), and were it not for an IDIOT in grey sweatpants and shirt seemingly 'hitting on me?' or mocking my dancing AND un-welcomingly hitting on a young female friend who traveled up with us,..... and were it not for a friggen DEAD crowd,...no, seriously folks, the majority of these folks had the lights on, but nobody was home, ..........it would have been MORE fun. However, Mr Rick's is in a fantastic location. The floor layout is well thought out and comfortable, and were it not for the goons playing pool, oozing negativity and totally ignoring their women (no dancing, no applause of appreciation EVER for the band working their Ass off) we all 'could' of had a much for enjoyable experience. Perhaps because it is located where it is, and the people there are already on "disconnect" from ...whatever LA or somewhere and it is the ONLY PLACE with the lights on in town then,........... it does NOT lend itself to activity and warmth and friendliness, but the band, again, was WELL WELL worth the drive to this otherwise sleepy town. read more

deserves absolutely no stars. couldn't understand a valid out of state drivers license. showed the server an old ca license and when we were annoyed he cussed at us and told us to leave. you lost 12 hungry and thirsty customers because your server had a bad attitude and wouldn't take five seconds to understand. we won't be returning. rude and terrible service. read more

I seriously wish I would have read the reviews here first. I went to Mr. Rick's because I have local musician friends who play music there. I wanted to show my support and was happily surprised when they told me Rick's served food. When I arrived, I was even happier to find out the food was from the Custom House. My happiness soon faded, and eventually became non existent.... BECAUSE NOBODY WOULD WAIT ON US!! It wasn't even super busy. Not all the tables were full and there weren't a lot of patrons at the bar either. I ordered beverages at the bar, asked about ordering food and was told to pick a spot to sit and someone would be right with me....My daughter and I waited A FREAKIN HOUR admidst lots of flies and at a dirty table (dishes had been removed by staff) that never got wiped down, and a waiter/waitress/ cocktail person never ever came back. I went to the bar to get another round of drinks, asked AGAIN about ordering food, was told somebody would be right with me, and well, that never happened. My daughter and I left and said something to the bouncer on the patio and he just looked at us like we were nuts for telling him we'd never go back. Friends or not, we'll support our musician buddies at other locations, not this one. read more

awful experience. I visited this place with my boyfriend because we had heard good things about it. We arrived and ordered food and drinks. After waiting a solid hour for our pizza and watching the bar tender walk around with it and finally set it down we asked if we would be receiving our food anytime soon. He then proceeded to give us the cold pizza we had been waiting for so we refused to take it and asked for a new one. After being told it would only take 5 min we watched another server take our new pizza to a different table and after waiting another 20 min we finally decided to leave. AWFUL SERVICE.
