Dancers of all sizes and shapes are welcome and are all treated in the same respectful way. As the mom of a pre-teenage girl whose body image is still in development, this is a crucial component for me. Secondly, the instructors are personable, approachable, and highly talented, and interested the dancers' development. The instructor who manages the jazz, tap, and musical theater programs provides the choreography for the productions, and the results are a classic, skilled and enthusiastic display of talent. She does not have to rely solely on trendy gimmicks or inappropriate dances to design fantastic pieces, yet the productions and recital dancers stay current with what progressive dancers do. Finally, the owner is flexible, knowledgeable, and professional, and makes sure each dancer is getting individual attention when it is necessary. For any parent looking for a dance school, I would stop by the studio and talk to him. He will let you try a class or two for free to see if your kiddo likes it, and there is so much going on there you are bound to find a place.

Weight and controlling weight was frequently discussed and my child was 8 years old. When our child made a friend, the teacher whispered to the other child who then ignored our child. There is clearly a prejudice against children who are neurodivergent or have learning disabilities. We attempted to have a conversation with the owner about the bullying teacher and each time we were sent back to communication with the problematic teacher. The owner blatantly ignored any and all messages we sent to her. When we pulled our child, we went to another school and our child jumped forward in technique by years after only a couple of lessons. And we were told that the techniques our child learned would lead to injuries. I would avoid this place like the plague. There are much, much better places for youth to learn dance.

All that to say I was super intimidated to take the plunge now, in my late 30s. I started with a Saturday afternoon line dancing workshop. I was immediately put at ease by the friendliness and the diversity of ages, sizes, and shapes of people that I found taking the class with me. After my wonderful experience at the workshop, I signed up for beginning modern jazz. Tracey Durbin is an amazing teacher! I was up-front with her about my lack of experience and nervousness. The vibes were great, the playlist was awesome, and the workout was even better! I do lots of barre and yoga, so I figured this would be in a similar vein, but I was so wrong. Not so fast! They said they don't have a complementary anything but can sell me a twenty-four hour day pass for twenty dollars! I thought that was exorbitant and turned around and left. I find this mercenary. I would have paid ten dollars for twenty-four hours but twenty is too much. I will check out other gyms in town because of this.
