I've only taken intermediate classes, so I can't speak for more basic or more advanced instruction. My one gripe is that the Ballet School does not allow regular walk-ins. They will let you try out your first class for free, but from then on, they require dancers to purchase a minimum of 9 classes. I assume this is to encourage retention, but really, the policy discourages me from attending class at all just because I can't commit to one class per week. Bummer.

If your kid loves tap dance, this is where you go in the Triangle area to learn how to tap. We drive 30 minutes from Durham to get here. The instructors for the most part have all been students of Gene Medler, the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble (tap company) meets here, and the NC Rhythm Tap Festival is held at the dance studio every year. The studio has one room dedicated to tap dance and it is flooded with light! As far as jazz and modern instruction goes- t he teachers are very gifted instructors and while the classes are "fun" I know that my kids are learning technical skills that translate over to other dance forms (like tap). The recitals are held on Memorial Day weekend but are split between two days so parents aren't "stuck" in a very, very long performance (which was my first experience as a dance mom - lol - at a different studio). I appreciate that recitals are tasteful and choreography is truly moving (last year's advanced modern, jazz and tap performances were very artistic versus "showy"). Additionally, more advanced dancers are involved in the choreography of their end of year recital which I imagine is very meaningful to those dancers. The location of the studio is great. I often times drop my kids off and run errands or sit at a cafe or take a yoga class or go rock climbing. Additionally, while I've never needed to use it, the studio has a small playground in the back of the building. As a parent that is new to dance (in other words, I did not dance as a kid or ever as an adult) there are a lot of questions I don't even know I'm supposed to be asking, but my experience is that the studio's administrator is very good at her job. I get all the emails I need in order to know how to maneuver my family through the dance options, payment schedules, recitals, etc. Also, at the end of every year, dancers get a sort of "report card" with praise and future dance style and level recommendations. My older kid really loved reading how much her teachers enjoyed having her in class!

Which you know I get it, you are trying to get business. My mom politely declined several times. I'm not sure if Paul misses social cues or is just not used to women saying no but he then got completely inappropriate. He asked her if she was declining because she had body issues then proceeded to tell her she must not love herself all because she wouldn't sign up for his stupid dance classes. Really? She's almost 70. This is a pathetic sales tactic, how dare you make women feel bad about themselves for saying no to you. If you did this to my mom I'm sure it's being done to other women once you can't make money off them. Do better.

Despite his admirable and well-intentioned outlook, I couldn't wait to dance, swing, and work my way around that pole! I originally learned about Vertical Tease Durham on Groupon, my curiosity roused I went to their website and decided to try the Intro to Pole but with the Pay as you go Rate for $10 a session in the 11AM Saturday morning slot. I don't know how strippers do it - working that pole is hard work, and not to mention super fun! Clad in yoga pants, my friend and I giggled like two mischievous school girls, I think there was even a "weeee" squeal after our first Firemans swing. Besides being a ton of fun, this pole dancing class was a pretty good workout as told by my sore delts, lats, and obliques the next day. I can't wait to work that pole again! I'm going to rent out the studio for a private party for one of my girlfriends birthday! Weeeee! Sorry Chris Rock. Having now been to two classes, I can say that pole dancing is definitely their forte. Kendra, the manager (and possibly owner), is fun and enthusiastic. Her constant encouragement was helpful for newbies like myself. "It doesn't matter how hard you fall as long as you get up sexy," may be my new motto. The instruction was great, and the workout was pretty good too (although I may be investing in kneepads). Five dollar Fridays rotate the style of lesson, giving you a chance to try some new things without spending a lot of money. After such a great lesson with Kendra, however, I was disappointed by the belly dancing class I took. The instructor seemed inexperienced, saying things like, "do the... what's it called..." and "let me see if I remember the next step." I've had better workouts practicing on my own, and since I didn't get a lot of feedback from the instructor on my technique, I'm inclined to keep it that way. Over all, I encourage everyone to check out the pole dancing classes, but if you're interested in another style of work out, maybe look somewhere else. PS. Give yourself plenty of time to get there; it's hard to find (on a frontage road to 15-501 and over Pomegranate Kitchen).

Get ready to sweat!…read more My friends and I stopped in for a class on a Saturday Morning as part of my bachelorette festivities. The dance studio is clean and inviting. The music was on point. So in my mind, I envisoned myself twirling around a pole gracefully ala Jesse Spano (Elizabeth Berkley- but she'll always be Jesse from Saved By the Bell to me) from Showgirls. However, I am apparently not graceful, limber or fit! Seriously- this class was a real workout, and the "pole play" is not as easy as it looks. Even the "floor work" was challenging, but sexy! My friends and I were all sore the next day. I could feel the burn in my quads, biceps, abs and rump. Although, I will admit it was one of the funnest workouts I've ever done. Amanda was our instructor and was ultra talented and full or personality. I'd love to return for their beginner's classes. *Insert body roll*
