All that to say I was super intimidated to take the plunge now, in my late 30s. I started with a Saturday afternoon line dancing workshop. I was immediately put at ease by the friendliness and the diversity of ages, sizes, and shapes of people that I found taking the class with me. The classes and productions are inclusive of any dancer that is interested in participating, even those who don't take classes at the studio. Dancers of all sizes and shapes are welcome and are all treated in the same respectful way. As the mom of a pre-teenage girl whose body image is still in development, this is a crucial component for me. Secondly, the instructors are personable, approachable, and highly talented, and interested the dancers' development. The instructor who manages the jazz, tap, and musical theater programs provides the choreography for the productions, and the results are a classic, skilled and enthusiastic display of talent. She does not have to rely solely on trendy gimmicks or inappropriate dances to design fantastic pieces, yet the productions and recital dancers stay current with what progressive dancers do. Finally, the owner is flexible, knowledgeable, and professional, and makes sure each dancer is getting individual attention when it is necessary. For any parent looking for a dance school, I would stop by the studio and talk to him. He will let you try a class or two for free to see if your kiddo likes it, and there is so much going on there you are bound to find a place.

Weight and controlling weight was frequently discussed and my child was 8 years old. When our child made a friend, the teacher whispered to the other child who then ignored our child. There is clearly a prejudice against children who are neurodivergent or have learning disabilities. We attempted to have a conversation with the owner about the bullying teacher and each time we were sent back to communication with the problematic teacher. The owner blatantly ignored any and all messages we sent to her. When we pulled our child, we went to another school and our child jumped forward in technique by years after only a couple of lessons. And we were told that the techniques our child learned would lead to injuries. I would avoid this place like the plague. There are much, much better places for youth to learn dance.

My mom attended workouts here, but she also went out of her way to support this business professionally. Through her marketing work within the shopping district, she helped them with marketing videos, events, and other promotional efforts. Unfortunately, she later lost her job and shortly afterward had to undergo emergency surgery. During an already incredibly difficult time, she called AKT Brier Creek to cancel her membership and explained her circumstances. She was told that she HAD to physically come into the studio to cancel and that they would not allow her to do it over the phone. My mom lives an HOUR away from this location and, after emergency surgery, was in no position to make a two-hour round trip just to cancel a gym membership. She also wasn't going to be physically able to make that drive anytime soon. Instead of offering her a reasonable alternative or showing even a little compassion, they continued attempting to charge her card and ultimately sent the account to collections. When I contacted the studio myself and asked about their cancellation policy, I couldn't even get a clear answer. Instead of transparency or accountability, I was met with defensiveness. This is exactly the kind of business practice people deserve to know about before signing a contract. If someone loses their job, undergoes emergency surgery, lives an hour away, and CALLS to explain that they physically cannot come in, there should be some reasonable way to cancel a membership without eventually being sent to collections. Policies are one thing. Refusing to work with someone facing legitimate extenuating circumstances is another. My mom supported this business when she was in a position to do so. When she needed basic understanding in return, this is how she was treated. If you're considering joining AKT Brier Creek, I strongly recommend getting every detail of their cancellation policy in writing before signing anything. At the end of the day, this experience made it feel like collecting $$$ mattered more than treating a person with basic decency.

Despite his admirable and well-intentioned outlook, I couldn't wait to dance, swing, and work my way around that pole! I originally learned about Vertical Tease Durham on Groupon, my curiosity roused I went to their website and decided to try the Intro to Pole but with the Pay as you go Rate for $10 a session in the 11AM Saturday morning slot. I don't know how strippers do it - working that pole is hard work, and not to mention super fun! Clad in yoga pants, my friend and I giggled like two mischievous school girls, I think there was even a "weeee" squeal after our first Firemans swing. Besides being a ton of fun, this pole dancing class was a pretty good workout as told by my sore delts, lats, and obliques the next day. I can't wait to work that pole again! I'm going to rent out the studio for a private party for one of my girlfriends birthday! Weeeee! Sorry Chris Rock. Having now been to two classes, I can say that pole dancing is definitely their forte. Kendra, the manager (and possibly owner), is fun and enthusiastic. Her constant encouragement was helpful for newbies like myself. "It doesn't matter how hard you fall as long as you get up sexy," may be my new motto. The instruction was great, and the workout was pretty good too (although I may be investing in kneepads). Five dollar Fridays rotate the style of lesson, giving you a chance to try some new things without spending a lot of money. After such a great lesson with Kendra, however, I was disappointed by the belly dancing class I took. The instructor seemed inexperienced, saying things like, "do the... what's it called..." and "let me see if I remember the next step." I've had better workouts practicing on my own, and since I didn't get a lot of feedback from the instructor on my technique, I'm inclined to keep it that way. Over all, I encourage everyone to check out the pole dancing classes, but if you're interested in another style of work out, maybe look somewhere else. PS. Give yourself plenty of time to get there; it's hard to find (on a frontage road to 15-501 and over Pomegranate Kitchen).
