Spectacular Setting & Five-Star Service--with Some Upkeep Needed If soaking in a natural hot spring while staring straight at Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains sounds like heaven, Mountain Village Resort is pretty darn close. We experienced the hot springs twice during our family visit to Stanley, and the setting is absolutely spectacular. There are three pools--two private pools, Bluebird and Sandhill Crane, plus the original Osprey pool, which is communal. The private experience is especially wonderful: you pick up a key at the front desk, unlock your pool, open the large garage-style door and suddenly the Sawtooths are your backdrop. Gorgeous! Our first reservation was Sandhill Crane at 2 p.m. on Sunday, and unfortunately it wasn't the best experience. By that point in the day, the water was considerably cooler than we wanted and visibly needed attention. There was residue from previous bathers on the surface, the pool felt slimy, and we couldn't see the gravel bottom. We ended up moving over to Osprey, which was much hotter and felt wonderful, although you give up the privacy. Lesson learned: book earlier! We returned Tuesday for an 11 a.m. reservation at Bluebird, and the difference was remarkable. The water was clean, wonderfully hot, and we could clearly see the gravel bottom. With the garage door open, soaking in that beautiful mineral water while looking across the valley toward the mountains was truly one of the highlights of our Idaho trip. The biggest standout, however, was the staff. My 86-year-old mother was with us, and the pools require a fairly substantial walk from the resort over uneven terrain. Brandon on Sunday and Sarah on Tuesday graciously transported us in the resort van. That kindness made it possible for Mom to enjoy the experience with us, and we were incredibly grateful. Five-star hospitality from both of them. There is room for improvement. At Bluebird, the wooden steps entering the pool were quite slick, and the handrail did not feel securely anchored. With wet surfaces and guests of varying ages and mobility, that really should be addressed. Sandhill Crane could also use more attention to water temperature and cleanliness between reservations. So, not perfect--but when everything came together at Bluebird, WOW. Natural hot water, fresh mountain air, privacy and that magnificent Sawtooth view? Pretty magical. Go early, book a private pool, and give yourself time to simply soak it all in. Life is too short. Travel well. Soak well. Get out there and find your next adventure! read more

Although we didn't stay at the hotel we did reserve a soaking tub for 7am and it was amazing!! The tub was very clean and a good hot temperature, the little shed the tub was in was also very nice and clean. AND THE VIEWS! Absolutely jaw dropping. I will most definitely be back here! read more

This inn surrounded in the mountains is in a beautiful spot. We stayed in a room with three queens and a fold out couch and is advertised to sleep 8 people. While there is room for 8, the room did not have enough toilet paper when we first came. We went to the front desk and they provided one roll. With this many people, I hoped the staff would have given us more. But the staff were helpful with a requested late checkout and getting us an additional room at the last minute. The ac/heat works well along with the fridge. We didn't use the microwave or TV. The shower head was broken in the single bathroom in this room. Overall it's nothing bad or good. We got what we needed and had an enjoyable stay. read more

So we are visiting Stanley for a family vacation. We tried to plan all our meals but the cook time on something was longer than we thought. The whole family (11 people) decided to go to Mountain Village Resort for dinner. We walked in and of course were told it would take a bit because of having to put tables together. We decided to sit on the deck which was open. We ate a variety of items from taco salad, to chili to chicken friend steak to pasta. I had the Killer pasta with chicken which was very tasty. The deck has a covering but to me, it was still hot outside. Cold waters were served right away and food came out pretty quick. Stanley is a cute city and the Mountain Village Resort is a great place to eat. If I come back to go fishing here, I will definitely be back to eat at this restaurant! read more

Nothing to rave about with this hotel other than the access to their hot spring. We rented a room for the night just to get out of town for a little adventure. Prices aren't the worse, but you get what you pay for. Basic room with no air flow other than a window, but it was incredibly smoky so we didn't want to open the window. So the room ended up feeling super stuffy and stagnate. We ended up getting a time reservation for the free hot spring option too for sunset which was pleasant other than the smoke. Doesn't seem like the reservations matters as a bunch of people kept showing up. read more

The chicken fried steak was great, the batter was the best I've ever had and the steak was nice and soft. The veggies were also cooked perfectly. But we disliked the gravy. The chilli was good but not the best. We also stayed at the resort for the night and the room was very spacious and affordable. I got a room with 2 beds just for a break from dispersed camping. The front desk ladies are unhelpful but nice. Lol. They gave no direction or clarification of anything among check in. The room itself isn't horrible, soft beds, decent shower, microwave, mini fridge. The carpet is old and freaks me out to walk on it barefoot, and the tv continuously clicks. The walls between rooms are very thin, and I could hear the neighbor snoring all night. However, the bed is comfortable and I can't find another place in Stanley that is walkable to all the touristy things. Great service all around!! Really loved how we were treated. I love coming up to Stanley and this was the first time we stayed at the mountain village resort. The only thing I have to complain about is the back breaking beds. They are no joke silent killers, luckily if you signed up to reserve time at the hot springs in the morning the wonderful view and hot water will mend you up nice. I'm surprised by a lot of the reviews on yelp about this place. My husband and I did an overnight trip at Mountain Village resort. We had a great time there. We stayed in a 2 queen room. The room was spacious and clean. The mattress are a firm memory foam. I have a herniated disc in my back and had no back pain in the morning. Which is not typical with hotel beds for me. The hot tub soak was amazing. You really can't get the same experience anywhere else. The front desk staff was friendly and we had no issues. There are a few things people need to realize. This is a room facing the parking lot hotel. You can hear people in the parking lot. It's not over the top but you can hear people. It's a hotel and I always hear other people. So this isn't an issue for me but I guess it is for other people. If you have mobility issues, this may not be the best spot. The stair case upstairs is made out of real logs. It looks very pretty but the pitch of the stairs is off. My husband and I both felt a little awkward going up and down the stairs. The hot tubs are also a 10 minute walk from the hotel. It's not a bad walk but it isn't level. I would be worried if I had an elderly person with me or if someone had a knee or foot problem. We made a lot of memories and would come back from another trip when we can! read more

The Good: The resort was very quaint and clean and Stanley is a beautiful town. The food at the restaurant is pretty tasty and much of the staff seems very nice. The Bad: The cook at the restaurant destroyed $50 worth of (what was supposed to be Medium) Prime Rib by sending it out so rare the mashed potatoes were soaked in blood (he also seems confused about what asparagus is). Several other tables complained about the severely under cooked meat as well. Some of the staff also seem to have disdain for having to serve tourists (even though it's their life blood). The Resort also has an inane policy that will allow you to book a room in advance, but not a hot spring appointment. That's first come first serve, so people arriving on Friday book all the openings and the people coming in later are out of luck. That's just bad management. The Ugly: The beds are so bad it feels like sleeping on a lawn chair in a bag full of Doritos. Springs poking through the mattress. Boxsprings so old and noisy that when you move it wakes up everyone if you get up to use the restroom. The walls are so thin you could hear a gnat fart in the next room.We had a family with 4-5 young children next to us, which was so loud it ruined the mood of our romantic weekend getaway. By the time they went to sleep the Cirque du Soleil party started in the room above us and went until dawn. Needless to say, between the noise and the garbage beds, we got no rest at all. Overall: It's a beautiful place to visit, but the Resort needs to invest in better beds and insulation, and maybe rethink it's reservation policies. The restaurant serves decent food, but nothing earth shakingly good. $100 on a bad dinner (anyone can have a bad night), and $40 on an average breakfast won't have us coming back anytime soon. Pretty disappointed by this place. Although we weren't guests we went to the front desk to book a time to use the hot spring. The guy told us it's first come first serve and to come back in the morning at 8am when they opened and we would most definitely get a spot. We did exactly this and the woman at the front this time was unkind and said we couldn't soak and was uninterested in even trying to make this work for us. She also said they opened at 7am, so the guy the day before completely lied to us. I think they need to get all their employees on the same page with rules and hours. Very dissatisfied with the staff and service this company has to offer.. we walked in yesterday and we were pretty much guaranteed a spot by the male owner (since they do not take reservations) the next day. He was even kind enough to show us the hot spring and said in his words "I can guarantee there's not going to be anyone here, come in at 8am tomorrow and we'll be able to get you in." Well, the next day approaches and we arrive at 8am and were also told by Bree (who was very rude) the wrong hours of operation. She said they opened at 7am and they only prioritize their guests that stay with them (in my opinion is a horrible operation of business) and the next available time they had was after our checkout time/ after we were supposed to leave. We went there for our wedding anniversary. It was on week day and snow falling so this place was quite and we were able to enjoy hot springs multiple times! Need to walk / short hike to the hot spring but you will soon forget about that walk as soon as you jump in to the hot spring. I came here pre-pandemic during the spring. It was part of a road trip and my first time in Idaho. This part of the state is COLD in the spring! The accomodation here is a motel style situation. The rooms are a warm refuge from the cold, but they definitely need to be updated. There is a mini fridge and a microwave but no in-suite kitchen. Parking is normally available right in front of your room although there are a lot of trucks with tows so they do take up space. The accommodations themselves are nothing special and dark and shabby -- very 90s motel style. What makes this place worth a stay is the little shed with a hot spring. The pool has reservable time slots although you might be sharing with another party if your group doesn't reach its capacity. The shed is freezing and there was only one working light when I was there. It requires a trek in the snow and the change rooms will be icy and wet. Expect for your eyelashes and hair to freeze while you are in the spring, as the steam condenses. The view is nice from within the shed although they definitely need more signage indicating the way, particularly at night. read more

Ate lunch at the restaurant (it's decent) and went to the hot springs as a one hour rental (we didn't stay there). Cost like $35 for 4 of us. It is a short walk from the parking along the river. We had the place to ourselves and while it was 27 degrees outside, it was perfect in the water. My wife even decided to go in the rotenburo (outside pool) by the river but didn't last long. Inside the hut is where it's at. Def recommend, especially if you can get the place to yourselves. read more

I didn't mind the 12" TV from the 90's since I didn't go there to watch tv. What I did mind was the absolutely worst mattress I've ever slept on. It had to be 20 years old, no cushion, sunken middle and painful springs. The place was nearly vacant but they still crammed us all together so when the people above us woke up at 5:30 am (complete with their car alarm), everyone else was awake. The door lock was nearly impossible to open. The private hot springs is 2nd to none and absolutely breathtaking. We at at the restaurant and the ribs were cooked to perfection but they could lighten up on the pepper dry rub, as that's all I could taste. This is a very cool older lodge in Stanley. Stanley is a very nice older small mountain community and this lodge fits in perfect with its character. Our room was a bit dated but clean. Staff was pleasant and helpful. We were staying here one night as part of a long motorcycle journey. We enjoyed it and hope to come back. The food from the restaurant was very good and the service was equally up for the task. I would recommend this place to anybody traveling to or near Stanley. The view is gorgeous of the Sawtooth mountains and the area is just perfect. We were thankful to be there. read more

Had a southwest chicken salad one night and a ribeye the next....both solid meals. Will come back here whenever I am in Stanley. Note: the hot spring is 5 stars as well. The motel?...not so much...worth it for the opportunity to soak but it is a Motel 6 level room if that...terrible beds, no wifi, tv sucked, etc. Also, I stayed 2 nights but they would only let me soak once per their policy (1 soak per visit?). Kinda lame...just think if you stayed here 5 nights and could only soak in the springs once. Don't understand that policy at all. Luckily there are good soakers for free along the river to the east. No, it isn't always raining or snowing or sleeting in Stanley. But whenever I find myself checking into a $99/night hotel room here, at the Mountain Village Resort, inevitably it is. Generally this is because the MVR is my dependable, Plan B overnight stop when the Sawtooth NRA campgrounds are either closed or so battered by rain, snow, and wind that the prospect of sleeping outside is ... less than optimal. Fortunately, they know this here. They live in Stanley, after all. You get a lot of snow days when you live above 6,000 feet in the mountains of Idaho, and having a warm bed, a hot shower, a lockable door, and a dry roof over one's head goes a long way to keeping one sane. So, too, do the amenities here that defy the norm: a private natural hot springs soaking area within easy dipping distance to the beautiful, if frigid, Salmon River; a $5 wooden token good for a drink (or discount) at the attached Stanley Club Saloon, where you can enjoy a bowl of beef sirloin chili (highly recommended) with a glass of Idaho or Washington wine (or craft beer). The saloon, along with the reception area, offers free wifi, while the rooms themselves do not. I tend to set up my laptop in the saloon in the afternoon, after checking in, order a glass of wine (last time it was a generous pour of 2016 CMS Sauvignon Blanc), and decide how best to leave Stanley early in the morning for my next road trip destination. Each morning, you will also find freshly brewed, strong dark coffee at the reception desk, so fill up your travel mug before you leave! Even if you are arriving on short notice, it's best to call ahead of time to book your room, or reserve it online. Although it may not look it during non-peak times of the year, Stanley's hotel rooms can fill up fast, and the MVR is the closest you'll get to a one-stop destination, complete with car repair services, gas station, an outdoor gear and clothing store, a small grocery store, a music venue, a full service restaurant, and the saloon/bar area which offers food as well as drinks. The hot springs is open to guests in one-hour time blocks; you need to register at the check-in and sign a waiver before you can use the self-service facility, which has two changing rooms next to the tub. The octagonal-shaped tub is around 4 feet deep and protected in a wooden roofed shed that has large barn doors on one end that open towards the Sawtooth Mountains and is the height of rustic elegance when it comes to such things: a soft, sandy bottom, freshly circulating hot water, a metal ladder for easy entry and access, and the chance to dunk yourself in the Salmon River (especially fun when it's full of snowmelt) and then rush back to the warm waters inside. Between the wines for purchase at the saloon, the soaking tub, the soft pillows, and the hot showers, it's hard to find fault with the "luxuries" that MVR has to offer. No, it's not Mar-a-Lago, or a AAA diamond-rated hotel. It's much better than all of that! Snow or sunshine, the Mountain Village Resort has a special place in my heart. It has saved me from cold nights and cramped mornings and given me the time and peace of mind to continue the journey. I am already looking forward to my next visit! read more

We got the Nachos, Western Burger, and Churro Ice Cream bowl for take out. The burger was good, the fries were great, and the Nachos and Churro Ice Cream were UNBELIEVABLE. The Nachos were perfectly loaded and well balanced with fresh lime juice. The Churro bowl didn't even make it home. Our order was hand delivered to our car not even 10 minutes after we ordered, and the employee made sure the Churro bowl was carefully handled for a beautiful presentation. Stanley feels a bit like a ghost town in the winter and the Mountain Village Restaurant was one of two places open on New Year's Eve. We ventured over and the place was pretty empty, only a few other patrons, but had a cozy fire and a welcoming environment. Our server was great and really personable. Drinks were cheap so naturally I was bound to love this place. The food was delectable, a small menu but had what we needed. Oh lawd the blue cornbread is tasty, steak and chili hit the spot. Place was overcrowded with loud parties all night for both nights we stayed--overflowing from the campground which created no parking for actual hotel guests. People staying in the neighboring camp area partied all night and rooms were hot with scotch tape covering holes in the screens so that leaving the windows open for cool air created a miserable two nights of sleep. When I asked about where I was supposed to park that night the person working could care less. read more

Motel was clean, staff was very nice and helpful. We had our dog with us so we got a pet friendly room. It was clean and well kept. There is also a pet area. IF you are going to Stanley, Idaho make sure you bring your own groceries because you are over 100 miles to a grocery store. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THESE RACISTS! I went to the restaurant with my husband (happens to be native and black) and they refused us service. Upon arriving the chef came out giving us a dirty look and said "let them know it will be 30 minutes before they can order" we thought that was strange but sat down anyways. The waitress was just as rude, asked us if we wanted drinks while we waited so we ordered a few margaritas. She came back telling us it was now 45 minutes before we could even PLACE a food order. We said fine as we were not in a rush, then she came back for the third time telling us it would now be 2hrs before we could place an order because the chef was too busy. There were not more than 10 people in the entire restaurant AND bar. She then asked if we still wanted our drinks. My husband said "why would we pay for drinks when your refusing to take our food orders, no thank you." The waitress walked away while calling him the N word and I kid you not a "dirty monkey" fast forward to the next night, our RV was In the shop so we reluctantly decided to stay the night at the hotel. online reservations said they had plenty of vacancy as did the sign out front. My husband gets there to check in and the manager tells him they have no availability and that we can't stay there. I spoke to the guests I saw checking in before us and they said they had no reservations and they checked in just fine. Real nice. I hope this place gets shut down. read more

Stopped here to order takeout on our way back to Boise. First off, about half of the staff was NOT wearing masks. The host/server was rude to us from the start. Our two pastas came out to $50, which seemed steep and was not aligned with the price on the menu. When we got the itemized receipt, AFTER our card had already been charged, we saw that the server had added "20% gratuity for groups of 6 or more." We were two people, and had ordered two dishes to go. The server disappeared/avoided us until our food came out. When we asked him about the charge, he said that they are adding 20% gratuity on all take-out orders. This isn't listed anywhere on their website, on their menus, or anywhere at the entrance or inside the restaurant where we placed our order. He didn't give us a heads up or even mention it. If we hadn't checked the receipt and asked about it, we wouldn't have known. Maybe he would've gotten a tip if he hadn't been rude to us throughout the entire transaction. We left wondering if he was racist and if he'd upcharged us because we're not white. Now, after reading the reviews that some other previous guests have left, that notion seems reinforced. I'm still unsure of whether all guests are being charged this 20% take-out fee, or if it was just us. To add insult to injury, the food was not good. Well, let's just say you get what you pay for--out dated and doesn't smell the best. Everyone is super friendly whether you go to the merc, the hotel, the gas station or the restaurant. The best part of it all is the lovely hot springs. What an incredible feature on property there! Two things happened at this resort that ruined our experience of this beautiful town: a complete disregard for security, and a violent, drunk, and incompetent staff. We checked into use the hot spring at the front desk, and our key didn't work. Tyler tried for about 5 minutes get the door to work, and we decided to go to the hot spring because we had a limited time slot. Tyler assured us it would be a quick fix and that the door would work when we returned. The hot spring was nice, very much what we expected from reading a few travel blogs. We lost track of time (there are no clocks on the wall in the spring I should note), and a visibly drunk staff member burst through the door. "Who are you?!" He slurred, demanding to know who we were before indicating who he was or what he was there for. Startled, we politely identified ourselves and asked for his name. "Doesn't matter!" He stammered in response. He was about 5'6" with unkept hair down to his shoulders and a goatee. We surmised it was time to leave, and we quickly gathered our things. "There's no need for an altercation!" He shouted. No one said anything about an altercation... No one said anything to him at all that would even remotely suggest it. "If you lived here as long as I had, you would have done the same thing" he inexplicably mumbled as we left. "No, I don't think I would have." I said. "Whatever, just get the f*** out!!" He yelled as we hurried back to the hotel. We found our door unlocked with a piece of paper Tyler had slid into the latch to keep it open. Our valuables were inside, and we had no indication they would be left unsecured by Tyler. We went to Tyler to complain about the door and, more importantly, the drunken man who accosted us at the hot spring. After saying "she could see both sides" of the encounter, she only offered "she would talk to him." In a customer service industry, any one of these two things would warrant a refund or at the very least an unqualified apology. They almost seemed happy to lose our business.
