For me this place was a disappointment after reading so many positive reviews. Honestly, it's a dive, which is fine, but I just want to call it as it is. I ordered an omelette for breakfast which was big and good, more than I could eat. Service was prompt, and my server was conscious of refilling my coffee. So there's nothing really wrong with this place other than it's kinda dumpy and I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again. It's also a gas station, so that's convenient. read more

This place was super cool in the 80-90's. The food got really bad in 2000. So we went for breakfast. Not a customer in sight. We were told breakfast was over so we had to order lunch. After getting coffee like 20 seconds she rudely asked us what we want. So I order soup that's written on the board. Um we didn't warm the soup up yet. Um ok then I will have a salad. Um we don't have that today. Ok why did you stop serving breakfast if freaking lunch isn't ready? Ok guess I will just have coffee. Because everything on the menu is breaded fried or served on bread. What a wonderful surprise! My husband and I completed a 20 mile day hike in the Sawtooth range and were famished once we reached our car. Navigation apps do not show Sourdough Lodge being part of a restaurant - and it really should! Passerby's need to know about this tiny diner located right off Highway 21 not too far from Stanley. We had no idea if it would be open. So you can imagine the size my heart swelled to when the neon OPEN sign was turned on. I was a little sketched out at first. The first thing you notice when you walk in are some very outdated freezers. And chipped metal superstore shelves. You know, like the ones at Walmart or Target. Anyway, turn to the left and you'll spot the dining area. There was only one table taken so we sat down right away. I hope I don't sound too mean - What I'm really trying to invoke is please don't let the old time ambiance steer you away! The menu was small, typical dinner food, making it easy to choose something. I ordered a patty melt with fries ($11.99). I don't think there was anything in the world that could have tasted better in that moment. I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the best patty melt I'd ever had. I'm beginning to grow more appreciation for these tiny, simple small town eateries. Sourdough Lodge completely blew my mind. 3.5 stars if I could. Kind of pricey for basic needs, though I didn't expect much considering that this is just a small passing town in the middle of a rural area. $125 for a suite that included a queen bed and bunk bed in separate rooms. The kitchen was very basic - had a pot, some mugs and utensils, but did not look super sanitary so I would recommend bringing your own supplies if you can. Wifi was very spotty and basically did not work all night. Bathroom was small but shower had hot water. Overall good space and had all your basic needs for a 2-star hotel, except the wifi could have been more reliable. There is a restaurant/convenience store attached to the check-in counter, which was nice to have. The people who run the business were nice too. Again, don't expect much in Lowman, ID but this a solid place to stay if you are road tripping in the area. Only 10 minutes from Kirkham Hot Springs which was my favorite destination from our visit to Stanley, ID. read more

This diner in the mountains is a good place to grab a bite. The wait staff are great- the cook is angry and mean. He does whip up a good breakfast. I wish I could help someone like this understand that life is so short to be angry and mean- especially to people that are vulnerable. Sourdough Lodge was incredible! I recently took my mom on a vacation with her dog, I was looking for comfortable and pet friendly accommodations with beautiful scenery. Sourdough Lodge was exactly that and more. Staff were helpful, it was easy to check in after hours and they left maps/instructions on how to get to the local hot springs. Meets simple needs extremely well! I booked a night so that I could go rafting with Payette Rafting Company and this place was really wonderful. The employees are really kind and have an easy-going approach which makes them personable, the owner is really friendly and obviously works very hard. The grounds a well-kept, my room was immaculate, dinner and breakfast were both incredible! They have a great stock of beer, canned cocktails and an actual liquor store. I recommend the Chicken Melt with Waffle fries for dinner and the breakfast sandwich on your way out, it beats any breakfast sandwich you've ever had--hands down! read more

Such a pleasant surprise! We wanted to book a pet friendly stay in Stanley, but got diverted to Sourdough due to no available rooms in Stanley. So we decided to be adventurous and stay in Lowman at Sourdough. What a fun experience! We stayed in Cabin C which was absolutely quintessentially rural mountain cabin meets all your needs accounted for. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and made you feel comfortable being there. My husband was hesitant at first dining at the cafe, but it was really our only option and it turned out to be fantastic service/food! We will definitely be back for future getaways from the city! Oh and the sourdough pancakes are a MUST TRY!! read more

We have stopped at the Sourdough multiple times. we have always loved it. this morning it was terrible. not sure if it is a new cook. my biscuits were heated up on the grill and burnt for biscuit's and gravy. my back on was dripping in burnt grease all though the bacon was not burnt. (they had previously burnt some bacon for a table next to us.) my husband ordered an omelette asked for there to be sausage to be added to it and the sausage was burnt as well. Stopped here for lunch with the family the other day. There aren't many choices in the area. What a pleasant surprise. I ordered a Rueben. It was terrific!!! Maybe one of the best I've ever had. Had a side of tater tots. Also terrific, nice and crispy. My son had a Philly cheesesteak, my wife had a chicken sandwich with bacon and cheese and my grandson had a huge plate of chicken tenders with tots. Everything was delicious. The young lady who waited on us couldn't have been any nicer. All in all, a very good experience. read more

We have been to the Sourdough several times. This last experience was not great. We had just got done with our rafting experience at Payette river company. Which was most awesome by the way. We wanted to take our grandkids over to sourdough for ice cream. Some of the serving were great while others were so small. I mean noticably small. They need to get the portions down a bit better. We stopped here for lunch after a morning of soaking in hot springs. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the meal was incredible! I ordered the Reuben and it was the best Reuben I've had in years. Really generous portions of delicious corned beef! Serendipity brought us to the Sourdough Lodge--that, and lack of planning. We had given up on finding overnight accommodations in Stanley, Ketchum, Challis, Sun Valley, & Hailey (all fully booked) and were heading to Boise when we were thrilled to see there wasn't a "no" in front of the lit "vacancy" sign. Yes, they had cabin B still available--we took it sight unseen. Our small log-sided cabin with a porch was tucked behind the restaurant/c-store. Its twin faced it with a small tree and a fire pit between. The hot tub gazebo and parking for a couple of vehicles was nearby. There were a few slots for RVs and a few motel rooms. There is another cabin back behind ours (along side the restaurant). There's a gas pump out front of the main building. Cabin B was perfect for us. It's set up with an open living room with futon and kitchenette that includes a breakfast bar with 4 barstools. There is a tv hung high in the corner and it gets about 6-10 stations decently. A small electric wall heater is the only heat source; a ceiling fan and screened windows are the only cooling sources. The main bedroom had a queen-sized bed tucked against 3 of the walls. It is very firm and the clean sheets, blanket, quilt, & 2 small pillows were a mix of patterns, colors, and textures. We snuggled into our cozy corners and slept great! There is another "bedroom" that is more like a walk-in closet with built-in bunk beds. It would be fine for sleeping--we used it to lay out our suitcases. The bathroom had tub/shower, sink over a cabinet, toilet, well-lit mirror, and exhaust fan. We had plenty of towels, bar soaps, and little bottles of toiletries. Only thing missing was a hair dryer. The kitchenette was stocked with dishes, Folgers ground coffee & filters, washing-up supplies, etc. There was an electric stove with exhaust hood, under-counter fridge, sink, & coffee maker. All was clean and comfortable. We were disappointed that our cabin was already booked for the next night, because we wanted to stay! They are dog-friendly, because we saw several staying with their families. The c-store was small but had pretty much anything a "camper" might want to cook, eat, or drink. Jiffy-Pop, wieners, & marshmallows--beer, etc. We ate a wonderful pizza for dinner (long time to bake in their convection oven, as they don't have a pizza oven)--absolutely worth the wait! Breakfast was reliably tasty, with sourdough pancakes a fluffy standout. Service was friendly and a little business-like. Nice folks! read more

We were looking for a spot to stay before a backpacking trip out of Grand Jean. The cabin we rented (cabin b) was just right for our family of 4. Clean, cool and beds very comfy. Staff was very friendly. Dinner and breakfast at the lodge were both yummy, reasonably priced and quick service. Wifi service was very spotty but overall we had a great stay and no complaints. read more

The people here are so kind and genuine. I was involved in a car accident a few miles away and ended up waiting here for 6-8 hours stranded. They responded really well to having a young girl crying the corner for hours on end and even gave me a meal on the house. I dont remember the name of the lady that helped me but I am eternally grateful to her. Also P.S, in my time here I witnessed a health inspection of sorts and they got 100%!! read more

On a recommendation, I drove 50 minutes on a Tuesday, to have the "greatest breakfast." When I arrived I was alone in the place for just a couple of minutes, still it felt a little off, like closed. On my way out I was 'greeted' by a surly woman whose cigarette break I had apparently interrupted. She followed me back in, and on the way, I asked if she worked there. She replied "Whaddya need?" Nice. I could see that the kitchen was not open, but still I asked, "Is the restaurant open?" Surly girl replied "I only have baskets" Whatever that meant?! Forget it. I told her I'd take a bottle of water and I left. Just saying, if you have a giant RESTAURANT sign atop your building..... BE FRIENDLY IF YOUR KITCHEN IS CLOSED. read more

I've stayed at this place a number of times as I'm coming from Boise and heading up into Stanley and beyond. Sometimes I'm coming to Boise from Missoula. I've been staying here off and on since 2009. You don't have many places to stay on the road between Stanley and Boise, but honestly I'd rather drive the extra hour or so it takes to get her then to stay in Stanley. Stanley's a cool town, but the accommodations there need a little updating. If you get a cabin at the Sourdough the lodging is much better than what you're going to find in the valley and the food, while your basic short-order style is good and reasonably priced (given what it most cost them to haul it into the the Lowman area). I've also stopped there once in late April/Early May and Jim Dovel (I believe that's the name of the guy who runs the place) was kind enough to give me free firewood so I could have an outdoor fire in the middle of a late April snow; that was really memorable. I'm a little sad to see some of the negative reviews here; that has never been my experience. I've had great experiences while the place was still run by the Dovel's; I'm not sure if it still is. They seem to be very decent folks who sometimes bring in young summer help from the surrounding communities; maybe some of the reviews about staff are related to those folks who haven't yet been trained up; I don't know. Anyway It's always been a nice oasis of civilization out there. I hope they stay in business! read more

The silverware was disgusting and the glasses had gunk/hard water stains. The owner was rude and the lodging accommodations were dirty. I will admit we did not eat there, but I want to talk about how wonderful we were treated at Sourdough Lodge. We had a flat tire on our trailer very close to this place of business. We tried to change it ourselves, but could not loosen the lug nuts. We have AAA, but there is no cell service in the area. When we arrived and asked if we could use the phone, we were shown their landline, and after explaining why we needed it, the wonderful lady at their register tried to find local help for us knowing the closest tow truck was over 1 hour away. She was kind, caring, and compassionate. We will definitely stop there in the future and hope others will too. Their food looked great, and they have a well stocked convenience store. read more

Great place to stop for a bite to eat on my way to/from Stanley. Better food, service, and prices than Stanley. About two hours from Boise. About one hour from Stanley. I've been there for breakfast and lunch recently, and dinner in the past. Good experiences each time. If they are really busy, then service might be a little slow, but that's to be expected. This isn't McDonalds. You can't staff-up for what you don't know. Breakfast ranges from $4 for a single large pancake, or $6 for a breakfast sandwich, or $7 for eggs/toast/hashbrowns to fancier meals at $11. Their pastries are good too. Jam is homemade. Lunch was tasty with a good variety of sandwiches, soup, salad, burgers, etc. They have a well-stocked store inside that sells food and other items that you may have forgotten to pack. The store prices are what you would expect from a place in the middle of nowhere. Prices too high for you? Then don't leave home without it! Otherwise, it's very convenient and good selection. Restrooms were clean. I've visited this place several times with groups of 7 people or so, and folks enjoyed it. I'm planning to visit regularly during hiking and backpacking trips. read more

Walked into the cafe and we were greeted with rudeness. Both of us weren't even all the way in the door when someone who we couldn't see from our vantage point in a firm loud voice told us they weren't serving any ice cream. Happens to be what we were coming for but we hadn't even got to the ice cream. We then asked if they had any dessert. After several loud (I'll call it a notch below yelling) of the worker saying "what" several times, and my wife repeating the request, we finally got an answer of a couple pieces of apple pie. With the continued negative vibes, we turned and headed out the door. I think we were still in so much shock of how we were treated I don't think we thanked the worker. I frequented the Sourdough Lodge five or six times while my family and I were staying at a Forest Service cabin nearby. The convenience store is well stocked with the essentials; the free wifi is plenty fast; the restrooms are very clean; and the restaurant food is EXCELLENT! I highly recommend this place for a meal if you are passing through between Boise and Stanley. I'd give it a 4.5 stars if I could. read more

I have stayed in the cabins, and rooms here, and ate a variety of things off the restaurant menu. The rooms are not fancy, but are always clean and we enjoy the extra space and front porch of room 1. The lodging is some of the lowest rates on the mountaintop, and I will always check here first. The staff was never overly friendly here , but consistent. The food is fairly priced. We were not a fan of the clam chowder. The burger was a bit wet from what we decided may have been the lettuce, but the home made buns are a treat. Our favorite item is the breakfast sandwich. The bun is toasty, and is the same home made bun they use for burgers. We like the crispiness of the sausage with the bun on the breakfast sandwich. We had a side of country gravy with ours, and it was not a great side of gravy. It was bland, and runny. I love the convenience of the store and lodging and restaurant and gas pumps all located here, and the store has a full beer , wine and liquor selection . Sourdough is bang for your buck in this beautiful location. read more

I stayed in Cabin C. Currently, the Sourdough Lodge is also housing a construction company trailer in their parking lot (very close to Cabin C) and 3 out of the 4 mornings, I was woken up by the workers walking around and talking. The cabin really needs improvements - it seems like the owner is not investing in any upkeep. There is not even a bed stand for the clock radio - it is simply placed on the window sill. The pull out couch was not comfortable, the cushions had holes and tears in them. They did not have sheets in the room for it and after we asked for them to be delivered, they never did. The shower stall (with tin sides - seemed like an afterthought to the bathroom) was about 3' wide, pretty small. I would strongly recommend that the owner spend a night in the room to experience his accommodations - I would be willing to bet things would change. At $99/night (I had to pay for all 4 nights at check in), it was not worth the money. If given a choice, I would not stay there again. Maybe since they have a monopoly on places to stay in Lowman, they really don't care about the quality of the rooms or that the construction site interferes with the guests ability to relax. read more
