I pull in, and within 10 minutes, they've already diagnosed the issue, showed me the problem (my fan broke...who knew the blades of a fan could break off!!) and let me know they could fix it. Unfortunately it was already 4pm and they couldn't get the part until morning. They called me at 9am the next day, and my car was already fixed! I was like wow, you guys are fast! I never write Yelp reviews, but I feel impelled to write one to tell the public that they are going to try to scam you. Especially people who don't know a thing or two about cars. Absolutely do not do any business with them. They charged me $286 for an alternator with another $120 in labor for a total of $430 (including tax). First off, fixing an alternator should not take 2 hours. I've seen it done in under an hour by my uncle. And my uncle doesn't do this for a living. More importantly, the alternator part they charged me was a Denso 210-0661. They said it was an original manufacturer. Denso is not original, and it was definitely not $286. I checked the model only after they put it in because I trusted them and I trusted the positive Yelp reviews. Turns out the alternator only costs $150 online. When I asked them if I could test the alternator voltage afterwards, you know what they said? They said, "trust me, it works. if it doesn't, your warranty will cover it" like they were hiding something. They also pretended like I couldn't check the battery health when I asked them to. Of course you can check the battery health. How else do you know that you absolutely have to replace your battery. I would highly recommend not going to them or else they'll take advantage of you. read more

AVOID AT ALL COST! These people have a habit of pushing you into doing unnecessary repair when you just want to get an estimate. I walked in just wanted them to check if the break pads needs to be replaced, long and behold, without even asking me, they took apart all my wheels and break parts gave me a "now what?" face, basically forcing me to change break pads right then and there. I had no choice but to oblige and end up spending $400 on four break pads, which another mechanic later told me was "crappy quality pads". If you ever go there, better make sure to tell them straight at the start that you just want an estimate and ask them to please not take your car apart first, cuz trust me, they will. read more

One day I was stuck in traffic on El Camino as I drove by the shop, and spotaneously decided to stop by to see if I could get my oil change instead. I have a Honda Accord 2006 and the previous places I went to would happily sell me synthetic oil as that would be more expensive, but Bowen told me it was unnecessary as my year model engine was not built to use the synthetic more efficiently. $25 dollars, no wait, and I was out in 25 minutes. They earned my trust and been going since. Once I had my brake pad and rotors changed there in under 2 hours. I had a thermal stat failure causing radiator to overhead and exploded yesterday. It was a real scare when it happened as I heard the boom and puffs of white smoke coming out. I took the car to Bowen and Jack's shop. There was green/white fluid splashed everywhere under the hood, the coolant tank had been completely depleted, and there was a broken piece of the radiator. I took the car in at 4pm and I received a call this morning at 10am that they had found out the root cause (the thermal stat), the parts that had been impacted (radiator and coolant refill and none of the others), and all had been done and cleaned up! Call it amazing. I felt assured, confident, and safe to know that I can always go to this shop in full confidence for all my future mechanical needs. And what luck I had that day when I got stuck in traffic and decided to make the stop! Tip: If you need some major work done that takes more than 30 minutes, Peets coffee on the south east corner of El Camino and Castro is 5 minute walk way and the baristas there make great coffee and really clean and bright place. Perfect to hangout while waiting for the car to be done. Seriously why would I ever go back to the dealers. read more

These folks are fantastic - honest, reliable, and very competent. I inherited an old Volvo lemon from my grandparents and wound up taking it in to Mountain View Auto Repair many times - each time, they would diagnose my car quickly and efficiently, and for free. Sometimes they would tell me they couldn't fix it - because many Volvo parts can only be worked on by Volvo - so I would then have to take my car into the dealership, where they would charge me $290 to re-diagnose the problem (!!!) before even agreeing to work on it. Sometimes the folks at Mountain View Auto Repair could fix it, and they always came in significantly lower than dealership prices to work on my car. I had called about the price and to check no appointment was necessary (it wasn't), showed up and the whole thing took about 20 min, probably less, I didn't note the time. They charged me about $5 more than they had quoted since my car took more oil than anticipated, but the guy was very apologetic about it... and I get the feeling would have taken the $5 off had I been upset about it. I thought $5 was fair, especially since I was aware other places also charge more for extra oil. I've been to this shop several times for repairs and maintenance, most recently for a smog check. During my last visit they pointed out a missing brake light and replaced it for $10. The service is always fast (I phone ahead) and the prices are competitive. On one visit they told me I had some nails in my rear tires and said it would be $15 to repair, but they only charged $5 because just one nail went through the tire.
